There were lots of new faces asQuaint Restaurant at 46-10Skillman Avenue in Sunnysidewelcomed over 50 networkingguests on February 11 to comepromote themselves and their busi-nesses or organizations, a surpris-ing crowd in the mid-winterweather. The free business cardexchange was held by Friends ofBusiness in Sunnyside, withLowery Liquors generously pro-viding the wine. Quaint ownerTim Chen served five kinds ofdelicious hors d’oeuvres, the mostpopular, a smoky pear chutney onfresh, delicate corn chips. Of thosecrossing the threshold, thirty-ninewere new to the restaurant.

Invited expressly to get theword out about their businesses, attendees complied, including lo-cal hot web designer Josh Springerof Northside Web Services, painterBetty Ann Hogan, and SajjadKhalfan of Awards, Signs andEtching, photographer Rich Kleinof Sunnyside, Kathleen Hogartyof Servpro, and Thomas Dimisa ofIntercontinental Capital Group,Woodside on The Move’s Chris-tian Amez and a representativefrom Sunnyside Community Ser-vices. The Turkish Cultural Center

of Queens had two representativesexplaining their yearly FriendshipDinner and trip to Turkey. TDBank’s Michael Fonte greeted oldfriends and toured the restaurant.

Business booster Luke Adamssaid proudly, “Four past Chamberpresidents are here,” meaning him-self, Tony Lana, who is the volun-teer engine behind the pride ofSunnyside, the Sunnyside DrumCorps, Attorney Ira Greenberg, andMetLife’s financial whiz RebeccaBarker. Becky was also a previouspresident of Sunnyside Artists.Current president Manny Gomezand Luke Adams greeted guests atthe door, with Manny speakingSpanish with a few professionals.“We are just trying to bring peopletogether,” said Luke. “Why roam?Shop at home.”

Ellen Mandelbaum, interna-tionally known stained glass artist, sold a $500 piece on the spot toanother guest.

The exterior of Quaint is un-marked, except for a small gold“Q,” and a few said they did notknow there was a restaurant there, despite its Zagat recognition andpopularity. “I will come back, “said a mortgage broker, “Goodmenu. Interesting wine list.”

Michael Terry, Pres of CFP, and past pres of Maspeth Chamber ofCommerce, with Maribel Zulay Vargas and another reflexologist, two of four Spanish-speaking health care experts who attended.

There was extra excitement inthe air due to the presence ofMariePaule Vermersch, who cameto Queens from Belgium at age 18to introduce her family’s waffles tothe United States during the 1964World’s Fair. She happily discussedthe wonders of the transcendent fair, which is celebrating its 50th anni-versary this year, with attendeesand she offered some of the secretsof her doughy treat. To start the day approximately 250 se-niors were led by Sunnyside Kiwanis’s resi-dent troubadour extraordinaire and pianoman Marc Crawford Leavitt with the ac-companiment of several other Club mem-bers and community residents in almost two

Theprizes ranged from gift certificates to localrestaurants to the ever-popular CASH. Af-ter lunch, the day continued on with tunesspun by DJ Juan Ortega and, of course, dancing. In all it was a joyous celebration

for all the attendees, whether they werepartnered up, looking for love and awaitingCupid’s arrow, or just enjoying the com-pany of others in the spirit of friendship.

The Kiwanis Club and SCS wouldlike to thank all those who assisted inpreparing and facilitating the event and tothe local restaurants Dazies, New YorkStyle Eats and PJ Horgans for providinggift certificates to their establishments aspart of the raffle prizes.
