The sidewalk outside 39-19 49thStreet overflowed with neighborsand friends on Saturday, October26 at the fifth unveiling of a plaquemarking a Sunnyside Gardens homeas an Historic Place. The home be-longed to Acadamy Award nomi-nee, Lilia Skala, who earned re-nown playing Mother Superior in1963’s “Lilies of the Field.”

Rooftop Garden Among FirstInstalled In Queens

On November 4th, CM Van Bramer wasjoined by representatives from the Horticul-tural Society of New York, elected officialsand local students to unveil a new terracerooftop garden and greenspace at BryantHigh School in Astoria. Bryant High School,Council Member Van Bramer’s alma mater,is among the first public high school terracerooftop gardens in Queens. The garden,

On October29, 2013, the I.S. 125Qschool community was presented with aspecial award and named an “InsightSchool” by Pearson Education to honor“Strong leadership and hard work thathas enabled improvement in student out-comes”. Dr. Deborah Reeves and Dr.Stefanie Fischer of Pearson were re-ceived by Principal Mittler and her ad-ministrative team, along with students,teachers, parents, UFT District 24 Rep-resentative Rosemary Parker, CFN204Network Leader Diane Foley, as well asrepresentatives from State Assembly-woman Catherine Nolan’s office. Thosein attendance were first treated to a fewsongs presented by the I.S. 125 chorus,led by choral teacher, Michael Grimes.

In Septem-ber, Van Bramer also unveiled a newlyinstalled educational garden in Sunnyside atPS 150. The garden is currently one of fournew educational greenspaces available tostudents in Western Queens.

Dr. Reeves spoke and lauded 125 by saying “Out of the hundreds of schools thatI have visited, I.S. 125 is by far the best”. Dr.Fischer went on to add that“Throughout my 10 year relationship with I.S. 125, Ms. Mittler and her team alwayskeep the focus of ‘we will only do what is best for our students’”. Ms. Mittleraccepted the award and said to her students “While this award is being presentedto me, what really is important are our teachers, parents, school aids, paraprofes-sionals, cafeteria workers, nurse, all the members of our school community, and ofcourse, you. When you see this award hanging in our school, I want you to knowthat it belongs to all of us”.

As any involuntary immigrantknows, until you master the En-glish language you work in entrylevel jobs. Skala worked operatinga factory machine, bussing andwaiting on tables and selling vari-ous products, while auditioning forthe rare parts available to a maturewoman with a heavy accent.

Her persistence paid off. Overtime acting jobs became more fre-quent. Working without an agentin 1950 Skala landed the part of

Grand Duchess Sophie on Broad-way in “Call Me Madam,” whichstarred Ethel Merman. When theshow was made into a movie in1953, Lilia joined Merman repris-ing the roles. In the early 1960’sSkala pitched her talent to RalphNelson, whom she knew from tele-vision work, wondering if the nunsin the new movie he was makingcould have German accents. Hetook the bait. Skala basked in wide-spread critical and public praisewhen she was nominated for anAcademy Award for her work in“Lilies of the Field.” She was 64.

William Morris talent agencypicked her up and kept her busyfor the rest of her life. She ap-

peared on stage, in televisionand in many more films includ-ing “Ship of Fools,” “Charly,”“Heartland,” “Flashdance” and“House of Games.”

Over 600 March In LIC ParadeOn October 31st, CM Van Bramer marched with over 600 local parents and children in Long Island City’s

“Halloween Trick-Or-Treat” March. Council Member Van Bramer served as this year’s Grand Marshal forthe parade organized by Long Island City business owners. The annual march brings together hundreds ofLong Island City families dressed in Halloween costumes.

CM Van Bramer joined by Gianna Teoli-Cerbone, Sheila Lewandowski, Raquel Salas, Senator MichaelGianaris and local children.

Boy Scout Troop of the Sunnyside-Woodside area will be holding its winter food drive on January 29th,from 5:30 PM to 9:30 P.M. in front of Associated Supermarket, located on Greenpoint Avenue between44th and 45th Streets, C-Town Supermarket, located on Greenpoint Avenue between 41st and 42nd Streets,and Key Food Supermarket, located on 46th Street and Greenpoint Avenue all in Woodside/Sunnyside,Queens. The boys and their leaders will be collecting for several local food pantries right here in theneighborhood (at St. Teresa and St. Raphaels’ Churches), which provide foodstuffs for families in need.It is reported that local food pantries are in great need of re-supply as their stocks have declined and demandis greater than ever throughout the borough and the city in general. The boys will be collecting all non-perishable shelf stable items (e,g. canned fruit, vegetables, tuna, pasta, beans, peanut butter et. al.).Monetary donations will also be accepted and remitted direct to the pantries for their immediate use inacquiring additional items needed for distribution. For any who prefer to donate by check, please makethese out to either the “St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Teresa” or “St. Raphael’s Food Pantry” or to the“Food Bank of NYC” an organization, which supplies food to local food pantries and community-basedfood supply organizations. If mailing checks they may be sent to Boy Scout Troop 390 C/O Saint TeresaRC Church, 50-20 45th Street, Woodside, New York 11377. Donations can also be brought to the Scoutsmeeting on November 8th between 7:30 and 9:00 PM in the auditorium of St. Teresa’s RC Church locatedon 50th Avenue between 44th and 45th Street. The Scouts thank you in advance for your generosity in helpingthose neighbors in need have a better holiday and winter season.

Food For Thought AndDiscounted Dining In Sunnyside

The first ever Sunnyside RestaurantWeek has featured three-course dinnermenus for $25 and some two-course lunchmenus for $10. In addition, No LongerEmpty, a nonprofit that organizes experi-mental public art exhibits, has hostedConveying the Invisible, site-specific “artinterventions” addressing love, life, deathand rebirth at four restaurants. These pieceshave included live painting performances and video installations. Seen in top photoduring the kickoff event at Venturo Restaurant on Nov. 4 are Sunnyside Shines BIDExecutive Director Rachel Thieme (far right) and members of Flor de Toloache, thecity’s only all-female Mariachi band. The bottom photo depicts Carlo Steiner’sButterflies, which has been on display at Venturo. The fun ends today (Friday, Nov. 8).
