HOUSING NEED
Housing Need
Site Boundary
• National Policy requires every council to identify enough suitable land to provide housing for 5 years. Councils are required by the government to significantly boost the supply of housing and to make planning decisions in the light of a presumption in favour of sustainable development. The 2014- 2019 dwelling target for Daventry is identified as 2912 by the Daventry District Housing Land Availability Report (2014). This equates to 582 dwellings a year.
• Daventry District Council currently has a shortage of housing to meet the present and future needs of the community within the area. Approval of this scheme will help towards addressing this housing shortfall.

The Northamptonshire Current Landscape Assessment (2006) provides a detailed assessment of the landscape character around the county of Northamptonshire. The site falls within the area designated as Undulating Hills and Valleys (area 13).
Characteristics of the Undulating Hills and Valleys character area include:
• Extensive undulating and productive rural landscape stretching across the west of the county;
• variations in the underlying geology influence local landform;• mixed farming predominates across the landscape although local
land use and field patterns are strongly influenced by changes in landform;
• numerous small deciduous woodlands, copses and shelterbelts punctuate the rural landscape;
• hedgerow trees, within the strong hedgerow network, contribute to the perception of a well treed landscape and combine with other landscape and landform features to create an intimate, human scale landscape and;
• strong historic character underlies this deeply rural landscape.
A more detailed character assessment for the local area has been carried out and sets out the Landscape Character Areas illustrated in the adjacent plan.

Woodford Road, Byfield05VISUAL CONTEXT
Visual AnalysisThe visual analysis has identified the following points:
• The site is well contained to the south and west due to the existing urban development adjacent to the site;
• Distant views are limited to the north and east due to the nature of the local topography with existing trees and hedgerows within the landscape;
• Main visual receptors are limited to vehicular users of the A361 to the north and Woodford Road to the south and east; pedestrian users of the Rights of Way to the west of the A361; residents within dwellings directly to the south and southwest of the site along Lovett Road and The Causeway.
• The site provides an opportunity to provide a softer transitional edge to the existing development to the north-east of Byfield with enhanced structural landscaping being provided to the northern and eastern boundaries.

The historic maps show the growth in Byfield over the past 140 years. In 1884 the village can be seen already established to the west of Church Lane. Up until the 1955 little growth is apparent within the village. The 1955 map shows the village expanding northwards of Woodford Road. Further expansion of this development can be seen in the 1984 along with additional development within the western side of the village. Relatively little development has occurred since 1984.
