EARWIGSEarwigs, while mostly a nuisance, may scare homeowners with the
sight of their enlarged pincers on the abdomen. Their name comes from a wives’ tale that they would enter the ear while a person was sleeping and tunnel into the brain. Earwigs are somewhat flattened, brown to black in color with large forcep-like pincers coming off the tip of the abdomen. Adults have a pair of shortened, leathery forewings that cover the membranous hindwings.
Earwigs feed on other insects that are alive or dead. They will also feed on decaying organic matter, lichen, moss, fungi or greasy foods.
When earwigs are found indoors, they are moving in from outside as an accidental invader. The insects can be removed with a vacuum or broom. If large numbers are found indoors, you may need to treat with a residual insecticide outdoors. It may also help your management program to utilize some of the following:• Replace old weather stripping around doors & windows• Seal pipe penetrations and cracks & crevices with sealant• Keep grass & foliage trimmed around the structure• Eliminate damp areas in crawl spaces or around the foundation• Reduce lighting around doors & windows or use yellow bulbs that
are less attractive to insects

Wood GlenTaking a Ride Through
Our Neighborhood300 Years Ago!
Over the past two issues we have reviewed the history of this area based on the recollections of the previous owners, Leroy and Ruth Lange. Now we’ll go back even farther in time before the arrival of the pioneers and cattle drives.
In its days as a wilderness, Wood Glenn was home to Native Americans, especially the Comanches, Tonkawas, Lipan Apaches, and Tawakonis. It may have been the Tonkawa tribe that left behind piles of flint that once dotted this neighborhood. Arrowheads were patiently crafted beneath the shade of Oak trees which still offer respite from the heat. Indian Mounds were also evidence of the presence of these earlier inhabitants. These dirt piles were roughly 10 feet square and about three feet in height. Other artifacts left behind by these tribes were common in the woods before they were covered over with asphalt and concrete.
Critters that naturally roamed these parts were rabbits, armadillos, raccoons, coyotes, and skunks. Wild turkeys and deer were introduced to the area in 1950. Doves and quail were plentiful. You can still spot some of these wild animals today, but most have been crowded out of their habitat. The wild hogs are a more recent addition, appearing in the woods only about 15 years ago. So these pesky beasts were not native to this neck of the woods.
When Leroy Lange’s parents bought 400 acres from the Merrill and Johnson families in 1938 they started raising cattle. Some years later they built a house where Leroy and Ruth still live today. Horses were a necessary means of getting around the ranch, but in 1980 they became seriously involved in raising some fine-looking Quarter Horses for show, and moved here from Austin in 1987. Their remodeled house displays many trophies and pictures of these prize horses.
So these woods have seen a variety of animals and people.If these trees could talk, they could tell us many
interesting tales from across the years.
In view of this historical overview, I feel that is somewhat arrogant of me to claim where I live as “my land.” It is God’s land, a product of the Creator’s handiwork. I am only passing through, one of many who have inhabited this space, doing my small part in appreciating its past and caring for my corner of it as its latest resident. I hope you also feel a little more connected now to this particular land, and have a little more appreciation for its interesting history.
THE HUNGER GAMESby Suzanne Collins
Remember the compelling and cult-following TV show, Lost? To me, The Hunger Games is the literary equivalent in that the writers creatively demonstrated survival and unity when faced with extremely harsh circumstances. The difference is that while Lost was the result of a plane crash on a strange island where anything could happen, The Hunger Games is ruled by the Capitol where young adults fight to the death as a form of entertainment for the government.
Set in the not so distant future, North America as we know it has been completely reorganized into separate districts (12 of them) all closely controlled by the militant, big brother, harsh “Capitol.” These districts were formed when the Earth had become so violated environmentally and morally that war broke out. As a reminder to all of the segregated districts that rebellion is not tolerated, there is a yearly “Hunger Game” where a male and female from each district aged 12-18 is chosen at random to fight each other to the death. There can only be one victor and everythingis televised, complete with sponsors.
It is in district 12 that the heroine, Katniss Everdeen lives with her mother (a healer) and her younger sister. Her father was killed in a mining accident but left his oldest daughter with the gifts and talents of hunting, which is her family’s key to survival.
When Katniss’ sister is chosen as one of the “tributes” to fight in the hunger games, Katniss volunteers in her place. Her male counterpart, Peeta, is also chosen.
Their experience at the Capitol and the whole tradition around the hunger games is so intriguing and fascinating as are the people they encounter. However, it is the way the hunger games are so carefully and technologically orchestrated and Katniss’ amazing ingenuity and will to live and survive that kept me reading and enjoying the brutal, yet thoroughly entertaining book. At the time I am writing this review, I am already on the final book of the trilogy!
This book has it all -- a love triangle, a heroine, an underdog, fighting, mystery, science fiction--it is a reader’s big Kit Kat bar!
