PRESIDENT'S LETTER“That’s how it starts” I’ve heard these four words numerous

times over the years from homeowners concerned about ongoing deed restriction violations -- street parking in particular. The phrase is a recognition that decline doesn’t happen all at once but starts in some seemingly small way and progresses slowly and gradually. Something below standard first occurs, then is allowed to remain, then becomes the norm from which further departure takes place. Churn adds to this as new homeowners move in and implicitly accept the current condition as normal. From there the process repeats.

In January I attended a fantastic program organized and hosted by the city of Round Rock called the Round Rock Neighborhood Conference. Most neighborhoods represented were dealing with thirty years or more of accumulated decline in non-deed restricted or non-mandatory associations. When you hear of programs to remove trash and debris that yield twenty tons or more of refuse you see where a neighborhood can go. Each of these neighborhoods was once shiny and new with enthusiastic and proud homeowners.

Fortunately, as a homeowner in Wood Glen you have knowingly or unknowingly agreed to limits on what you can do with your property. At nearly twenty years old, Wood Glen is doing well by comparison with other neighborhoods our age. But we have room for improvement. I don’t believe that every home should be a cookie-cutter copy of the one next to it but we should all exhibit the same high standard of maintenance and care. Not only does it make for a community visitors gush about but it attracts the type of buyers who will pay a premium – buyers most likely to voluntarily uphold that standard.

Preservation also requires an educated membership, a dedicated and informed Board and modifications committee, and third-party enforcement to make it all work. I’ll be working

towards education through this newsletter, posts on NextDoor.com and WoodGlen.org, as well as some resources for new homeowners.

As president I have the privilege of writing this letter each month. It is my only “power” – the power to inspire and persuade. I cannot pass edicts, I cannot appoint board or committee members, I cannot fire anyone, nor can I enforce stricter standards or create rules on my own. I have a board that must agree and support my ideas. The board is elected to represent the homeowners and your feedback is important and welcomed. However, we have certain obligations regardless of what the general opinion is, short of a vote to amend the CC&Rs.

Take care.News Items:

Mod-Com: The modification’s committee has 5 new members and held an orientation meeting on January 13th. Thank you to Julie Cowan for organizing and hosting this event and to Margaret Schell for conducting this session. The committee appears to be up and running with renewed energy.

Newsletter: The vision of Kelly Peel is for this newsletter to serve as a vehicle for neighborhood business owners to reach out to their neighbors in addition to strengthening community. Advertising dollars fund the layout, printing and mailing of this newsletter at no cost to the association. Please support our neighborhood by advertising in this newsletter!

Gunfire: There have been numerous reports of gunfire from the flood control plain area west of Creek Bend. A bullet has penetrated a garage in Behren’s Ranch and a ricocheted bullet has been found on the driveway of a home on Rio Brisas. If you see anyone parking a car along Creek Bend and heading west on foot, please call the RR police department to come investigate. We want this to stop for obvious reasons.

SILVERFISH

I recently noticed silverfish lurking in my house while handling holiday decorations, so I’m sure others may have the same problem. Silverfish can eat and stain books, fabrics, food and wallpaper, but are often considered being more of a nuisance than a pest. These insects have flattened carrot-shaped bodies with three long “tails” that come off the tip of the abdomen. The body is covered with fine scales that give them a silver sheen. Immatures look just like the adults, but are smaller in size.

Usually silverfish are not seen by homeowners because they are most active at night. They can commonly be found in attics, closets or near bookcases. They may also be found behind baseboards or around door and window casings. Silverfish feed on starchy foods like paper, flour, oats or glue.

Tips for managing silverfish:• Remove old books, papers & magazines• Store items in sealed, plastic bags or plastic containers with tight-

fitting lids• Clean closets on a regular basis- vacuum/ sweep floors and wipe

down any shelves• Reduce humidity with fans, air conditioning or dehumidifiers• Repair any water leaks• Inspect all items before bringing them into the house• Target treatments to where silverfish live- wall voids, closets, attics,

behind baseboards, etc.
