All of these projects with the exception of the fence and landscaping were covered by reserves.  e fence repair of $1,340 came out of the 2015 maintenance budget and the shortage of less than $1,000 for the landscaping came from the greenbelt budget which Karen speculates will require less maintenance due to the recent heavy rains.  e pool furniture was a 2016 expenditure that was moved forward due to severe wear to some of the older pieces.  e option of replacing individual units piecemeal was considered but it was felt that it would be better to replace all of it now than having unmatched pieces for a year and then replacing all of it, even the newer pieces, in 2016. e reserve study is available on woodglen.org under the financial statements section if you would like to look at it.  is study is an imperfect attempt to inventory association assets and predict when each will need to be replaced and at what cost so that funds can be set aside to cover them when the time arises.  It is not meant to be cast in stone.  If an item was estimated to wear out two years from now but is on its last legs today, and some item is scheduled to be replaced this year that is holding out better President's Letter than expected, the board can decide to move these expenses around.  is doesn’t destroy the plan any more than taking an alternate route due to obstacles destroys a road map. We are still able to evaluate where we are and how we are doing. e pool furniture cost more than the reserve study allocated and the board had initially approved, as did the landscaping and sprinkler system upgrades.  e parking lot resurfacing, however, was less than reserves anticipated.  A majority of the board approved shifting funds around with the end result being we anticipate meeting our projected contribution and staying beneath the projected expenditures. I have made it a cornerstone of my administration to communicate with the membership openly and honestly. For the nearly twenty years of Wood Glen’s history applications for greenhouses have been uniformly declined. e rationale was that our CC&Rs require that outbuildings have siding and roof materials similar to the main dwelling. However, other structures such as pergolas that did not meet this requirement were allowed. e modifications committee has recognized that form must follow function and recently approved a steel and glass greenhouse for a homeowner. I requested that the committee, in accordance with the requirements of Article IV, Section 3, create guidelines as to what is acceptable and what is unacceptable quality for greenhouses to anticipate future requests. As the homeowner himself stated at the April board meeting, he’d comply with any standards we require if we’d just let him know what they are. He also recognized that there are greenhouse variants that he would not want next door to him, such as those

FRONT DOORSMany of our homes in Wood Glen have hard-wood doors

with cut-glass inserts. These need periodic maintenance in the form of sanding, staining and the application of spar-urethane. When properly cared for these doors are stunningly beautiful. Steel doors need periodic painting due to oxidation.

LAWNS Water restrictions are in effect but you still have an

obligation to maintain a green and healthy lawn. Each homeowner is required to have an operational sprinkler system in their front yards which require periodic maintenance to operate efficiently. Please check your sprinkler heads and ensure they are not broken or pointing in a direction that wastes water. There are hints online on watering schedules to minimize water usage and maximize effect. If you start seeing brown patches, you need to make some adjustments.

BUSHES AND TREES Some bushes in the neighborhood have never been

trimmed. Once they get too large they cannot be trimmed back into a bush. However, removing the lower branches and shaping the canopies make a surprisingly attractive ornamental. If you have one of these monsters, please give it a little TLC. We also have numerous trees with branches hanging down into the sidewalk. The clearance must be 8 feet in these locations. Trees CAN be trimmed in the summer months as long as the equipment is sterilized and the wounds immediately treated. Please fix these nuisance areas or you will receive a notice.

GARAGES Yes, I’m sounding like a broken record. Please make any

and all efforts to clear your garages and utilize them for parking as required by the CC&Rs.

I think most homeowners would consider it a benefit to be able to ask and learn ahead of time what is required prior to doing legwork for a desired improvement. The question isn’t whether or not you can have a particular improvement, but what standards are required to preserve property values and maintain a consistent character throughout the community. If you disagree, please e-mail me and we can discuss it. If you convince me I’m wrong I’m going to paint my garage door to be a replica of the Jamaican flag. After all, that’s not explicitly prohibited in the CC&Rs.

between the sidewalk and the house and not in the area between the curb and sidewalk. Have your agent place your sign in the proper location or move it yourself if necessary. Courtesy letters will start going out in July.

SpeedingThe speed limit is 30 miles per hour in residential areas. Please

do not exceed this. It would be tragic for a child to be injured or worse because of a little impatience on your part.

Modifications Committee Submissions -- I cannot over-emphasize the importance of submitting requests to the modification’s committee and getting approval prior to beginning work on improvements. No one likes to be put in the position of having to decline an improvement after you’ve spent thousands of dollars

Street parkingCars on the street pose a safety hazard for children and street

parking should only be done if absolutely necessary. The order of preference for parking is the garage first, the driveway second and lastly the street. At no time should any vehicle parked on the driveway block the sidewalk.

APRIL 2015 BOARD UPDATEThe Wood Glen board of directors held its April meeting at

my home on Becca Teal on the 21st. The landscaping committee presented plans for refreshing the front of the amenity center. This was approved along with a motion to allow Karen Fischer to utilize funds from her greenbelt budget to cover the excess of approximately $900 above the $5,100 set aside in the reserve account. Also approved was the expenditure for the new pool furniture.

The board also discussed strategies to deal with the vandalism occurring at the amenity center. Already this year we have incurred nearly $3,000 in damages. The total for 2014 was just under $3,000. This is a costly trend. The board approved $2,300 from maintenance funds to weld permanent hinges on the tennis court gate. The current hinges are basically clamps and don’t allow for a secure closure of the locking mechanism to the effect that a firm tug will open the gate. It is hoped this will solve that problem. We’ve also taken the motion sensors off of the lights at the amenity center with the result being that the lights will remain on all night

in hopes that it will deter kids from hanging out there.We have a security camera system that was installed around

2012 and a third proposal was to add two more cameras to the amenity center and reposition the four existing ones. The understanding was that our current DVR had 8 ports and could accept more cameras but after further investigation it turns out it has only four so that plan has been scrubbed for now. Repositioning the cameras is still a low cost option we’re considering. The current placement leaves several large gaps in coverage.

There are street light fixtures in the amenity center parking lot that have not been working. Several attempts to correct this have failed and we are seeking warranty service to get these working with no further expense to the association.

Also discussed was the possibility of having motion sensors placed on the tennis court lights. This option will be explored but is not approved at this time.

Four-lined plant bugs are brightly colored.  Nymphs (immatures) are red while older nymphs start to have wing pads with yellow and black stripes.  Adults have fully developed wings that are yellow and black striped.  Adults look similar to, and may be mistaken for, striped cucumber beetles.

These insects have piercing-sucking mouthparts which they use to suck out plant juices.  The plant bugs suck out chlorophyll and leave a "window" between the upper and lower epidermis of the leaf. Damage appears as white, dark or translucent spots of foliage and is sometimes mistaken for fungal damage.  Feeding may also cause curling and browning.  Fortunately, damage is mostly cosmetic, but if you are trying to eat the foliage of the damaged plant it may become a problem.

The insects feed on a wide variety of hosts, including  fruits and vegetables, annuals and perennials and woody plants.  When disturbed, the insects are fairly good at hiding.  They either crawl to the underside of the leaves or drop to the ground to hide among foliage.

If you feel the need to manage these insects, try insecticidal soap.  If that doesn't work, you can try azadirachtin (neem- concentrate, not oil; it's getting too hot to use oil formulations) or pyrethrins.  If that doesn't work then try a residual contact product.
