Happy New Year!

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? I recently read a Forbes Magazine article that said 40% of Americans do, but only 8% of us actually achieve what we’ve resolved to do. Yikes! You know, resolutions are just goals by a different name. With the help of advanced brain science, we can improve our chances of success by rethinking how we make goals (or resolutions.)

4-H strives to teach youth how to set and achieve goals because this is a life skill that can have a huge impact on their futures. What is a goal? A goal is what you want to do and learn. It’s like having a road map that helps you decide how to get to where you want to go.

To be successful, set goals that: Are specific (not too general or broad) Meet your needs and interests Emphasize what you want to learn Provide you an opportunity for achievement Can be accomplished in a reasonable amount of time with the resources

available to you Show progress over previous years

A goal has 3 parts: Action, Result, and Time.

The action is how you are going to do it.

The result is what you will do.

The time is when you plan to have it done.

Now is a GREAT time to set your 4-H project goals! Write down what you want to learn in your projects and share your goals with your project leaders. While you’re at it, go to: https://wood.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/4-h-record-bookportfolios/ and record your goals on the “Project Story” page for your portfolio. You’ll be glad you did!

With best wishes for achieving every goal,

Laura

Greetings New Families

WOOD COUNTY 4-H YOUTH CONNECTIONS JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2018

Welcome to 4-H! Thank you for choosing Wood County 4-H. We’re glad you’re here.

We know that new families can feel overwhelmed in the beginning. There seems to be an avalanche of

information, and at the same time, not enough information. We’re here to help you navigate your way into the

many opportunities that 4-H has to offer.

We’ve had many questions about Cloverbuds, Explorers, PALS and the Leaders’ Association recently. Below is

a brief description of these terms and who they include:

Cloverbuds are 4-H members in grades K-2. This is a special,

energetic age. They want to get their hands dirty, they want

to play, and they want to make new friends. Club leaders are

encouraged to consider these traits at club meetings to keep

these young members engaged. All Cloverbuds should be

signed up for the Cloverbuds project in 4-Honline. They are eligible to exhibit four items at the Central

Wisconsin State Junior Fair.

Explorers are 4-H members in third grade. All third grade 4-H members should sign up for the Exploring

Project in 4-Honline. We encourage youth at this age to start sampling many of the different project areas

offered, without committing to each one specifically. We also encourage them to start becoming involved

in their club’s business meetings. Explorers are able to exhibit six items at the fair, two of which can be

animals. Explorers who are also 8 years old are able to participate in 4-H shooting sports.

PALS (Promotion And Leadership Skills) is a group for youth in 7th grade and up that focuses on leadership

development. PALS members build friendships and develop leadership skills with youth from all across the

county as they plan and host special events such as the volleyball tournament and Kiss-A-Critter at the fair.

PALS have a voice in the 4-H Leaders’ Association and help shape the program’s future. All youth who are

of age are welcome to participate and should contact the UW-Extension office if they are interested. Club

leaders should watch for leadership potential in their members and encourage those youth to join PALS.

The next PALS meeting is on Monday, November 27th at 6:30 at the First Presbyterian Church in Arpin.

Wood County 4-H Leaders’ Association is an organization that provides leadership, direction, and financial

support to the county 4-H program. There is an Executive Committee of elected officers, and all active 4-H

leaders are welcome to attend the meetings. All members are representatives from local 4-H clubs and the

group meets six times a year.

Contact us at the Wood County UW-Extension office and let us know how we can help!

Want to be a 4-H Volunteer? Volunteers are the heart of 4-H. They bring their expertise and spirit to the program and share those gifts with

youth. We welcome new volunteers who would like “To make the best better.”

All prospective volunteers are required to complete VIP training (formerly youth protection). The next VIP

training will be held during Project Discovery Day on Saturday, February 10, 2018. Please RSVP to

[email protected] or 715-421-8439.

(this is being re-run from last month, as this is the first newsletter that

newly enrolled families receive.)

Project Discovery Day. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the first classes

Project Discovery Day is a great opportunity for Wood County youth to

sample some of the many projects that are available, and meet some

adults that may be able to help teach them. The day is dedicated to

helping youth explore new project areas and learn from experienced

leaders/older youth. This year, we are partnering with MSTC’s Marshfield

campus which opens up some fantastic opportunities.

Registration will be online. Watch your email and the Facebook page for information.

Project Discovery Day

First Time Impressions of Fall Forum Hi, my name is Brittany Bauer and it was my first time at Fall

Forum. The ride there was long and beautiful, and the

conference center was gorgeous. I was impressed as soon as

I got there. They had shown us directly where to go, and we

got to pick up shirts, name tags, a map, and a schedule. We

had plenty of free time for some of the activities they set up.

They had everything from making 4-H buttons, to learning

about worldwide 4-H conferences. It was amazing, you felt

welcome at every station, and it helped you meet new

people with some of the same interests as you. I was so

surprised when we met some people who had llamas, my biggest hobby, and we sat down and talked about them

for a long time. During our interactive sessions I learned so much about how to make my community better. One

of my sessions was called “Photobomb for Community Service” and the people who ran it talked about how they

improved their community by taking pictures of broken roads, busted houses, and a road to their town with no

welcome sign. They then took these and improved each of the areas by fixing roads, building nice houses, and

adding a welcome sign. Just by showing people how they could improve helped a lot. When we got to go eat, it

was awesome. They had amazing food and all the drinks you could think of. It was so cool to see all of the different

activities you could do with your club, and seeing different ways we could improve our community. I think

everyone should experience Fall Forum. Thank you for letting me tell you about fall forum.

Sincerely,

Brittany Bauer

New Resources for Club Officers Are you a newly elected officer for your club? Do you have questions about your

responsibilities? If so, we have great news! On the Wood County UW-Extension

website (https://wood.uwex.edu), there is a new tab called “Resources for Youth

Leaders”. Here you will find updated record books for both club treasurer and

club secretary. There is a great resource book for club historian, too. The

handbook for presidents will be posted soon as well, so check back!

The Wood County 4-H Leaders’ Association provides leadership, direction, and financial support to our county’s 4-H

programs. The success of this organization is dependent upon volunteers stepping up to serve. In November,

elections were held for President-Elect, Secretary, and Fall Forum Representative. Newly elected officers are:

President-Elect: Christine Jensen, Shady Lane

Secretary: Jodie Budtke, Webster

Fall Forum Representative: Jessica Lewer, Marawood County Line

Congratulations and thank you to our new executive board members! Many thanks to Cheri Dimick who will be

stepping out of her role as President.

Elaine Ward of Richfield was appointed to represent the 4-H Leaders’ Association on the Junior Fair Board. Thanks

for volunteering, Elaine!

OTHER TALENTS/PERFORMANCES

EXAMPLES

Puppetry: must provide your own stage. If a tape is used, the voices on the tape must be the voices of the

performers except in lip synch performance

Novelty: participants do not vocalize or actually play an instrument. Instead, they may dance, air jam, lip

sync, gymnastics, etc. Must provide own tape player.

DEMONSTRATION

Demonstrations can be a great deal of fun and a fantastic way to improve your presentation and

speaking skills. If your club has members do demonstrations at your meetings or do

demonstrations at school, it often doesn’t take much more effort to “spiff” that presentation up

for the Demonstration Contest.

Grade divisions and time limits are listed below. Please plan your total demonstration to stay

within the time limits. As that will be part of the judging criteria.

Grades K-2 (approximately 2-5 minutes) Grades 3-5 (2-5 minutes) Grades 6-8 (6-10 minutes) Grades

9+ (6-10 minutes)

An easel for posters and a table will be provided. Demonstrators must bring all their own supplies

for the demonstration. Live animals cannot be brought into the school. It is highly recommended

that you use stuffed animals or manipulate your demonstration to be done without using live

animals (Wisconsin State Fair does not allow live animal presentations). No fire or flammable

materials or weapons are allowed.

Subjects can range from project work to hobbies, or anything you can both show and tell.

Demonstrations may use posters to review materials needed and the steps taken to complete the

process.

Two 4-H demonstrators (age 12 or older) are eligible for WI State Fair participation in August. For

3rd graders (Exploring) this does not count against your 6 projects for the fair. Cloverbuds are

participation only.

MUSIC

1. A club may enter as many groups as needed.

2. Group Musicals will be judged in two separate categories: group vocal or group instrumental. Small

groups consist of 2-4 members and large groups are 5 or more members.

3. Solos: indicate on the entry if they will have an accompanist. Solos are to be 2-3 minutes for Grades

K-4 and 3-5 minutes for Grade 5 and older.
