WONDROUS LOVE

arranged for band by

CHARLES KREEB Instrumentation and number of parts:

General Notes and “Grade”: Originally scored for an adult beginning ensemble (of mixed abilities), this arrangement of Wondrous Love is suitable for many types of ensembles. The rhythms and ranges are for groups of players who are nearing the end of their first method book or who have moved into their second. If you have a group with these minimum requirements, this piece should work well for you: Junior High School, Middle School, New Horizons, Community, or College Methods Course bands should find it within their reach (see performance notes below about altered parts). Its open-sounding chords, the opportunity to “feel” a piece in 2 vs. 4, striving for a beautiful legato sound, or the few instances of changing meter could all be stepping off points to teaching and greater musical understanding.

Performance Notes: ♦ The piece is a setting of the traditional folk melody, Wondrous Love. ♦ The piece can be conducted in 2 (3 for some measures) or 4 (6). Tempo indications are given for both performance styles.

A suggestion would be to learn the basics while working in 4 and then move toward a 2 feel. ♦ Some parts include alternate notes (an octave higher or lower) that are printed slightly smaller, and these notes should be

played if the primary notes are too difficult or tiring for a given player. Parts without alternate notes are subject to octave changes at the director’s discretion (try to retain the shape of the melodic line). These altered parts allow for the piece to be played with less frustration by groups of different ability levels—and especially by groups with mixed ability levels.

♦ Not everyone plays all of the time. Players should strive to come in with appropriate tone and dynamics even if their parts are later in the piece or relatively short.

♦ The Timpani part is optional.

A Word About Photocopying

A score and set of parts have been included that should cover the needs of most bands; however, it is recognized that not every band has perfect instrumentation or exactly the same number of players. Purchase of this set of music allows for the purchaser to perform limited photocopying or reproduction of those parts that are needed to fill out the set of music for his or her ensemble, or to preserve the originals in school or camp settings. Copying for resale, loan, etc.—that is, where one is copying the work for the avoidance of purchase—is forbidden and greatly reduces the ability of publishers and composers to be able to keep producing music. Thank you for purchasing music from Curving Walkway Publications.
