The Good Friday service is one of celebration. Odd as that may seem, we recognize on this night that Christ has completely identified with us in suffering, even to death. On Good Friday, we remember how wondrous it is to have a savior-intercessor who is able to sympathize with our weakness and suffer on our behalf, taking the world’s pain upon Himself. What do we have to offer our loving God in return but to remain present with Him and with all who suffer? Tonight, that is our only task, to simply remain present. We pray the Holy Spirit would open our hearts to the deep suffering of the world, that we might know what it means to stay with others in lament, to celebrate the wondrous love of God in our midst. PRELUDE Brahms WELCOME AND OPENING PRAYER God of grace, we come together on this somber day with heavy hearts. We are reluctant to hear this story of Jesus’ suffering, we would rather skip this and go straight to Easter, to hear the happy songs and rejoice at your victory over death. But that is not for today. Help us today to stay with Jesus, to feel with him as he is betrayed, rejected, to watch as he is condemned, tortured and killed because of his love for all humankind. Thank you for the gift of your son, which you freely gave, even though you knew how he would be received. Be with us now, in this hour of worship.
