2nd Sunday of Lent
As we march through Lent, it can be easy to think it's
all about sacrifice. No chocolate, no alcohol, no meat on
Fridays. Yet here, only in the second week of Lent, we
have the story of
the transfigura-
tion. This reading
reminds us of the
"why" behind what
we do. We don't
fast from dessert to
lose weight. We
don't donate money
or serve others
because it's merely
a nice thing to do. Lent is about transformation!
Peter, James, and John trudged up the mountainside
behind Jesus. This must have been a difficult hike,
because when they reached the top, "Peter and his
companions had been overcome by sleep." Despite our
best efforts, perhaps we, too, can be asleep to the deep-
er meaning of the Lenten season. Jesus is transfigured
while they slumber, but eventually they become "fully
awake, [and] they saw his glory and the two men
standing with him."
This is no small thing! The disciples witness Jesus in
his divine splendor and see the miraculous apparitions
of Moses and Elijah. The entire mountain becomes a
spiritual breakthrough. "A cloud came and cast a shad-
ow over them, and they became frightened when they
entered the cloud." These symbols are present in the
Old Testament. They are present on Mount Sinai when
Moses prayed alone and received the 10 Command-
ments. Elijah had a similar experience when he prayed
alone before God. But here are ordinary men, former
fishermen, who have been drawn up into an adventure
beyond their wildest expectations. Jesus is the Christ,
the Messiah, the fulfillment of all that came before.
But Christianity is not the religion of the elite, where
only the select few are allowed to participate. We are
all invited into spiritual transformation. Lent is a
privileged time for this .

Lower Your Risk for High Blood Pressure - Avoid the Salt What is high blood pressure (also called hypertension)? Blood pressure is the force of your heart pumping. High blood pressure occurs when the force of blood against your artery walls is too high and leads to disease. A good goal to strive for is a blood pressure below: 130/80 for adults.
What are the complications of high blood pressure? Chronic high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart disease, kidney failure and other problems.
To lower your blood pressure there are several things you can do:
Have regular check-ups so you know what your blood pressure is.
Take medications if prescribed by your medical care provider.
Quit smoking/vaping and/or don't start.
Limit your alcohol intake.
Exercise regularly.
Lose excess weight.
Eat healthy and lower the sodium/salt in your diet.
A healthy diet means getting plenty of fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy products, lots of whole grain foods each day, and limiting red meat while including poultry, fish and nuts in your diet. You can follow a Mediterranean diet or the DASH diet (google these for more information). A healthy diet also requires you limit the amount of sodium chloride or salt in your diet.
All salt no matter its type is bad if used excessively. Table salt, sea salt and kosher salt all have the same amount of sodium chloride the only difference is added minerals or the shape. The important thing to remember is that a teaspoon of any salt has 2500mg of sodium and a person should consume no more that this in 24 hours. Sodium causes the body to retain fluid and this means there will be more fluid in the blood stream which can result in higher blood pressure.
How can we limit the amount of sodium/salt in our diet?
Read food labels -look at the serving size and amount of sodium it contains.
Drain and rinse canned vegetables, and other products that contain sodium.
Substitute salt in cooking with herbs and spices. Add small amounts of salt while cooking but do not season after serving with extra salt. Salt is an acquired taste and you can learn to enjoy food with less added salt.
Fast food and restaurant food is often very high in sodium -limit your intake.
Many bottled condiments are high in salt: soy sauce, salad dressings, pickles, relishes, etc.
Most favorite snack chips and snacks are high in salt. Packaged nuts may have added salt.
Quick meals (pizza, canned soup, bottled spaghetti sauce, frozen dinners, etc.) are often high in salt. Try to avoid canned or processed meats unless labeled low in sodium.
Some desserts may taste sweet but can have loads of salt, e.g. chocolate chip cookies or salted caramel ice cream.
Take care of your body—life is a series of choices. God has given you the ability to make choices - try to make wise choices for yourself and your family. Pray for the ability to make wise choices.
