MOSTLY WOMEN WERE OBSERVED IN

HELL-WHY?

We have no in te ntion to accuse women when we say that

they will be in a majority in Hell. These ar e no t ou r words, bu t

the words of Allah's Messenger JilJ. He had seen Hell with his

eyes an d ha d observed that· m os tly women were fuel o f the fire

of Hell. He was asked, "0 Messenger of Allah, wh y were more

women (than men) observed in Hell?" He said, " It is that you

curse people (often) an d you ar e ungratefu l to your husbands.

Though he ma y be kind to you always yet if he happens to be

unkind once, you tell him that you have never obse rved good

in him." o

da y,' Allah's Messenger Ji1J spoke words of adv ic(• an d

admonition to a group of women. He told the m of those things

that could take them to Hell. He also disclosed to them th e

things which ma y deliever the m from Hell. fi e sa id to them,

"0 women! Give charity often. 1have seen more of you in Hell.

Surely, you ar e given to curse an d sho w ingrati tude to your

husbands. l havt• no t seen anyonl' more deficient in intelligence

and more d eficient in re ligion than you ye t you t'an foo l an

in te l l igent and wi se man ." They askt•d, "How is o ur

in telligent'e a nd religion dl'fkicnt?'' H e sa id to them, "I s no t

detrimental to a woman is her habit of cu •sing other people

an d he r refusa l to be satisfied with lwr lot in life. Women are

inclined o f t t to have tall ambitions, to complain much an d

they have a blind sense of honour . They will take false oaths

an d they ar e a trial for men an d are mischievous.•

I f a ma n obeys his wife then that often turns ou t to be

harmful to hi m b e c a u ~ e in that case he be actu.tllv

pursuing his lust though s he is wife. Rather, ma n mu ; t

obey his mother as long as that does not result in disobcdiencl:'

to Allah.•

However , this ~ o e s no t imply that there ar e no wise

women in the world with worthwhile v i c e to give. There

certainly are women· wh o can profer sound advice, but we ar e

concerned he re with those women wh o ar e d isobedjent to

Allah an d to His Messenger * a nd they ar e found in a very

large number in t h i - ~ age. We cannot say that the woman of

today wh o kee ps up with fashion has worthwhile advice to

profer, for, sh e is detrimental to her own self an d hl•r society.

Th e man wh o does no t mind if his wife aborns hcrsf'lf an d

goes ou t without veil is a cuckold. Such a ma n is his wife's

obedient slave and, in fact, he obeys th <..• devil whom his wife

also obeys. Of course, there are pt'l)p ll' in ou r time wh o ar e

deeply religious an!l wh o follow the tedchings of the Prophet

.ij, to their·best. In fact, we have alread y written a book ab out

women who have bee n given glad tidings of Paradise - of

whom we read in th e Holy Qur'an an d in the Prophet's ~saying.

ME N WHO WERE GIVEN TWINCS OF HELL

The Qur'an speaks of the people of Hell as it does of the

people of Paradise. Th e Prophet *- gave glad tidings of

Paradise to his sahabah ~ by name and to those who were

present on cer.tain occasions, like th e Battle of Badr an d th e

bay'ah ridwan

an d both me n and women are included inthese glad tidings. Th e Qur'an gives tid ings of both Paradise

an d Hell specifica lly as well as in relation to deeds. However,

on e wh o associates anything with Allah is forbidden entry into

Paradise. Allah says: · ·

An d give tidings of a painful chastisement to those who

disbelieve. (9:3)

And, He also says:

(I t sh all be said:) Assemble those who did evil, an d their

companions, and what they used to worship be sides Allah,

then lead them to the path of Hell. 137:22-23)

There ar e more such verses in Allah's Book. The Ahadith

also tell us of Paradise an d Hell. Thus, a chief of the Makkan

idolaters, Ubayy ib n Khalaf, o u ~ h t a decayed bone an d

scratching it , he a.sked, "You· claim that your Lord will

·resurrect the dead, Tell me, wh o will revive this. (bone)" an d hebroke the bone inlo tiny pieces.

The Prophet .f.3 said, "Yes! Allah will give yo u death.

T hen he wil l give you life again and admi t you to

Hell. ' '0

And this verse was revealed:

And he strikes fo r Us a simili tude and forgets hi s own

creation. He says, "Who shall revive the bones when they

ar e decayed rotten?" Say, "H e shall revive them Who

originated them the first t ime. And He is th e Knower ofevery creation." (36:78-79) ·

These people who were given ti d.ings of Hell w e re

hard-hearted an d obstinate. They were deprived of the inner.

an d they disbelieved only ou t ot their mulish ' no give-in'attitude. They followed in the footstep o f the devil an d rejected

the call the Prophets t')W' ~ an d presisted on the path of

their forefathers wh ich su ited them. Take the example of Abu

Jahl. He was a ch ie f o f th e Makkan id olaters. H e di d no t

inwardly d eny the existence of th e Creator, bu t he could not

to le rat e th e Proph e t f8 wh o wa s of th e Banu Hashim. He

wanted a Prophet from another tribe. He"would say, "We do

not rejec t yo u bu t w e rejec t yo u r message. " Th e verse w as

revealed : '

. On ·e day, Abu Jahl said t.o hi s henchmen , " Indeed

Muhammad is tr.ue. He has never spoken a lie. Bu t if th eoffspring of Qusay ··ta ke away everything from hos ting the

pUgrims to th e nadwah ( the counselling) an d no w th e

prophethood then what remains for the Quraysh?" This wa s

ho w th ey d)sbelieved , bu t today people simply reject th e

existence of Go d an d th is kind of disbe lief is more se rious.

Hpwever, both kind s ar e fuel for fire.

WHATDID THE PROPHET. SEE IN HELL

In the nin.e books of Ahadith. there ar e about on e thousand

nine hundred an d forty Ahadith about Hell. They describe

Hell, some of its dw ellers an d the reasons why they ar e going

there. Each of them inspires fear in th e heart o f a Believer

whose hair will stand on end.

Th e.rrophet • found that most of its dwellers are women .

. He said to an assembly o'f women, "AcCustom yourselves to

give charity even i f yo u have to give your jeweller y because

you' outnumber men in Hell. You curse too mUPih an d show

· ingratitude to yo ur husband. And I ha ve no t se en anyone as

de ficient in re ligion an d in intelligence as women ye t they gain

an upparhand over men. Th e tes timony of tw o wo men is equal

to a man 's testimony, an d every woman expe rie nces a certain

pe riod of tim e - as Allah wills - during which she does not

prostrate before Allah." • ·

Sayy idina Ib n Abbas 4;i, re p o rt ed that during a so la r

ec lipse, the Prop het ft. offered salnll in which he stood for a

long time - as mu ch as it takes to recite al-Baqarah. The ruku '(bowing postu re) wa s also lengthy an d whe n he arose from it

he again stood long bu t this wa s sh orte r than the firs t standing.

He bowed again in ruku' bu t it was a shorter ruku' than the

first. Then he pr ostrated an d s tood up a standing shorter than

the former s tanding, an d went into ruku' for a long bowing

which wa s "shorter than the first bowing. Then he prostrated

and when he ha d finished the snlnll , the sun wa s v isibl e. He

said , "T he su n an d moo n ar e Allah 's s igns . They a re no t

eclipsed because of anybody' s birth or death . When you se e it,

remember Allah." Th e sahaba h ~ submitted . "O f Messenger

of Allah! We saw yo u take some thing in you r hand while yo uwere in the s tanding posture. Then yo u moved back. (Why di d

you do that?)." He said, " I had seen Paradise a nd tr ied to pick

a bunch of grapes (h·om there). I f 1 ha d taken it then yo u wo uld

have ea ten from it te ll the en d of th e wo rld . And I sa w Hell an d

I ha ve never seen a more dreadful sight. I sa w mostly women

a mong the inhabitants o f Hell." T he sa habah ~ asked, "O f

Me sse nger of Allah , why is that so?" He sa i d , " They a re

ungra tef ul. " They as ke d , "T hey a re so w ith thei r hu sb and .

They Jo no t recognise kindness an d favour . I f you are kind to a

woman for a period of time an d sh e faces an un pleasantness

with yo u an y ti me th e n sh e says, ' I hav e nev er seenyo

udisplay kindness. '•

Th e Prophet A did not se e th is in a dream . Ra the r, he

observed it with his eyes. However, he wa s ra ' uf an d ra him

e Mus tad rak Haki .,• The Ha dit h in Bukhari an d Muslim tells us that he said to women: Givt> c harity

often l>eca us" most of yo u fu e l for Hell-fire . You comp la in often an d ar e

unthankful to your husband.

where to ea rn a livelihood for them. He asked her about their

wellbeing. She said, "P raise belongs to Allah . We are well an d

co ntended." He asked her about thei r sustenance and sh e said ,

"Mea t". H e asked he r what they had to drink . Sh e said ,

"Water." Sayyidina Ibrahim ~ said, "May Allah bless yo ur

meat an d water for you! When your husband returns home,

co nv ey to hi m my salaam a nd advise him to retain th e

th res hold of his home's door."

Sa)'yidina ls ma ' il ~ returned home and asked h is wife if

anyone ha d come home for him. Sh e said, "A beautiful faced

ol d ma n ha d come. He asked about you an d ou r living. When Itold him about it, he sa id that l sh ould conv ey his greetings to

yo u and ad v ise yo u to retain the threshold of ou r door." He

d isc losed to he r that the man was his father an d she was the

th res hold of the doo r that the ha d advised him to re tain . A llah,

the Exa lted, blessed them w it h twelve nob le sons.0

Ther e. have always been grumbling wo me n. They do no t

express g ratit ude to the ir Lo rd but complain of pove rty an d

guarre l wi th their husband whose life they turn into Hell. Men

should divorce su ch wo men.

2. THE WOMAN WHO ADORNS HERSELF

ln the beginning of th e twent ieth century, a movem ent for

th e freedom of women was launched wi th the basic objective of

drivin g women towards aberrant ways. Th is was patron ised by

Jews and Christians who made known that their ambition wa s

to lea d ast ray the aliens wh o were ve ry devoted to thei r

religion so that they keep away from their religion an d feel sh y

to describe its sa l ien t fea tures . They boasted that they ha d

converted many to a th iesm.Ann a Mieljan proposed that Islam could be wiped ou t

we se ek refuge in Allah from su ch thou ght - in a sho rt time

by ad m itti ng Muslim g irls to m iss ionary sc hoo ls w it h in

Musli m coun tries. Sh e disclosed tha t th e missionary schools

~ a s i m Ami n an d his henchmen have also played a very

effective ro le ilt misguid ing women. He ha d written a book,

'The Modern Woman,' in 1900 an d by the time he died in 1901

h is efforts had ach ieved considerab le response. Two women -

Hadi Sha'radi an d S ~ z a n b a r a d i demontrated tramplin g of

their veil un de r their feet in 1923 before the delegates of an

in te rnational women's conference in Ro me. Th e war against

the ve il ha d crOssed the boundaries of Islamic co untries like

Tu rkey an d Iran where the c ruel Kamal Ataturk an d Raza Shah

Pehlav i compelled the Turk an d Iranian women to cast of f th e

veil. Turkey wa s once the centre of the ca liphate, bu t now it

Say to the believing men that they lower their gaze and guard

their private parts. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is

the mughassala/z whose husband calls he r bu t she pleads that

sh e has menses."0

shrieks at the time of distress.' Allah has cursed the woman

Sayyid ina Ibn Um ar • narrated that Allah's Messenger*

said, "I n th e last days, there will be women who will ride like

men . They will al ig ht at th e door of the mosque, though

dressed but nude. Their head s will be like th e hump re d

camels. Curse such women, for, they ar e accursed. If ther e wa s

an ummaft after you, then th ese women would have served

them just as the women of th e ummafz before yo u serve you."

4. WOMEN WHO KILL ANIMALS & Bll<DS

There ar e women wh o ar e c a r e l e s ~ in looking after pets.

They neither feed them nor allow them to look for their food

themselves.

The Prophet ~ has described a women who matched this

description.

Th e Prophet !l t said, "A woman was sent to H e ll because

of a cat. Sh e ha d bou nd a ca t and she di d no t 'feed he r nor

unbound her that sh e might fetch ow n food-of th e insects

(etc). As a result the cat died." 0

T hu s, it is th e responsibility of the woman who keeps petsto look after them . They ar e creatures about whom she will be

asked. I f on e has to keep pets· then one must ensur e that th ey

ar e fed reg u larly lest they come to harm. I f that cannot be d one

then the pets may be set free to mend for themselves.

5. POLYTHEIST AN D HYPOCRITE WOMAN

Polytheism is a grave si n. It causes the polytheist to go to

Hell forever. Allah has said that He wi ll never forgive

polytheism. Th e Prop het *- said , " If anyone dies while he ha d

bee n associatin g with Allah then he will go to Hell. T he

narrator of the Hadith Sayyidina Ibn Mas'ud • said, " I say

that if anyone dies while he does no t associate anything with

A llah then he will go to Paradise."• . ·

When Allah's Messenger 13 wa s asked about major sins,

he m e ntioned four grave sins. One of these was as c ribing

partners to A llah . He said, "They are: to associate any thing

his eyes have not seen, or' he ascribes to me that which I ha ve

not sa id .'' 0

He a lso said, " If anyone knowingly forges a lie against me

then he mu st look fo r a place for him in He ll."

that t hey cann o t ha ve th e i r ow n child e rn then th ey a dopt

slay no t the soul that Allah ha s forbidden, except by right,

~ u m i l i a t - except hi m who repents, an d believes, an d does

nghteous deeds... (25:68-70)

breasts. So, Jibr il ~ informed hi m that these women brought

to men those w ho were no t thei r (the me n's ) offspring. ( fhey

we re si ned by someone else.)

These indecen t people will be punished in the. Herea fte r

severely. However, those wh o repent from their sins and turn

to th e forgiving and Me rcifu l Lo r d a re safe fr o m th es e

meanings.

7. ARROGANT WOMAN

Whether a man is arrogant or a woman, both ar e equally

s pecimens of H e ll. Ar rog a nce is disliked by Allah and Hi s

Messenger !i\1., an d pe opl e also ha te it. An ar rogant person

imag ines that he is superior to everyone. The Prophet li\1. has

said warning his 11/1/lllalt, "If anyone has pride even as much as

a grain of mustar d seed then Allah will fling him in Hell faced own .'' 0

The P r o p t ~ also said, "He will not en ter Paradise wh o

has so much as a grain of pride in h im.'' 8

Arrogance is fou nd in words, deeds and characte r. l t is a

desp ised trait though it m igh t be an atom 's worth. Why should

a person be arrog ant? He is crea ted from a drop of semen an d

. ca rries im pu rities in his wh ole body. We know from Ahadith

that a prou d person will no t enter Pa radise. The p rou d will be

admitted to Hell. T hey may be men or women.

8. THE QUARRELSOME WOMAN

What man ut ters with his ton gue is either advantageous to

!t im a nd to o th e rs o r wi cke d and accountabl e. Except fo r

•· remembrance of Alla h, ev ery kin d of excesiv.e sp.eech is a waste

of t im e an d harmful. A llah's Messenger .13 ex plained it in on e

mistakes. And, if he m akes many mist akes then he w ill commit

many s ins. And , he wh o has many s ins against him is moreof Hell." 0

So m e ti m es i t is good to ta l k but si lence is safe.

However, rememb rance of Allah an d d e fe nce o f t ruth is

exempted (f rom th is axiom). Th e P rop het ~ sa id about it ,

" May A llah t)ave me rcy o n the perso n who when he s peaks

de r ives be nefit o r o bserves s il ence against ev i l ta lk an dbecomes secu re.' ' 0 .

It happen s that a negligent pe rso n ridi cul es a religiou s

practice o r is rud e to someone beCause of w hich he deserves to

go to Hell. Th e Prophet ~ sa id ab out th is thing, "Somet imes

one ut ters uninten tionally w ha t pleases Allah Who exa lts him

in ra nk because of th a t. (In th e s am e way ,) he utte rs, in a

moment of negligence, what disp leases A lla h because of which

he goes to Hell.' ' • ·

There is an ancient saying :

9. DISOBEDIENT WIFE

I f a woman obeys her husband, offers snlnlt five 'times a day,

keeps in Ramadan, observes what Allah has enjoil'led an d

forbidden then by AUah's will she ·will e nter Par adise

Allah has said:

Sadaqah keeps Allah 's punishm e nt away. I f a \YOm an is

A woman must not be the devil's help . She m devote

Sayyidina Anas ib n Maalik 4/i. na rrated : I heard Alla h ' s

Messenger 8 sa y - and no one will narrate this Hadi th to you

afte r me - " Withdrawal o f knowledge, prevelance of

ignorance, pred ominance of adultery, prepondernace of wine -

drinking, sc arci ty of m en an d a large num be r of women so that

there will be on: ma n to look after fifty women - a r e s ig ns of

the Last Ho ur. "

Men's perfection is because of various reasons: intelligence,re ligion , e tc. But, it is least found in women. At most, four

women have this perfection. According to one Hadith they are

the chief of all women. The Prophet 8 said:

NATURE OF HELL-FIRE

Allah 's punishment is for every stubborn disbeliever an d

po lytheist an d violator of Allah's commands an d every s inner.

The fire is wild an d it pierces hearts and turns childre n in to o ld

men.

Allah kindled the fire in H el l. It burned fo r a thousandyears till i t turned w hite . Aga in it wa.s kindled and it

burned fo r a th o usand ye a rs till i t became re d . It wa s

kind led th e third time an d al low ed to burn fo r a tho usan d

ye ars ti ll it became black. Its fierceness ca nn ot be mitigated

an d it s hea t is so seve r e that so much o n o pe ning as a

nee dl e' s hea d wo ul d des tr oy a ll cr eation o n ea rth . In fact, if

th e keepers of Hell were to be se en then all who se e the m

will pe rish .

0 yo u weak man! Ponder a whi le! I f th e s un 's hea t

bec omes a little severe, you are on th e point of de ath . You

pe rs pi re pr ofusely an d breathe heavily. Then, what d o yo uthink of the severity of the fire of Hell? Will yo u be ab le to

to lerat e it? Allah's Messenger • said about it:

This fire of yours is one-seventieth part of the fire of Hell . I f

it was not extinguished with water twice, th ere would not

have been benefit fo r anyone in it .

He also sa id, "Th e fire kindled by ma n is one-seventieth

part of H ell-fire." Someone said, "O f Messenger of Allah, By

Allah, the fire of the world woul d be e nough." He said , "The

fir e of Hell is above the fire of the world by sixty-nine pa rtsan d each of its portoin has that much heat: ••

A neck w ill protrude from H e ll-fi re, having two eyes with

w hich it will see. It w ill have a tongue with wh ich it will speak

and say. " I have been appo in ted for every s uch person wh o

ascribes partner with A llah .. " (to the end)Allah has said:

Sayyidina At>pullah ibn Abbas • asked Mujahid .iit J~ you know ho w large he ll is?" Mujahid sa id, "N o!" Ibn

Abbas 4Jc, sai d, " By Allah , yo u cannot fathom . Th e d ist ance

betwee n the ear-lobe of an inma te of Hell an d his s hou lde r will

be a distance of seventy years. Pus and blood wi ll flow from

that as though s treams."

Mujahid asked whether the re were ri ve rs in Hell an d

Sayy idina Ibn A bbas. s aid , "N o , there ar e no rivers b u t

va lleys. Do yo u know the extan t of th e bridge of Hell?"

Mu jahld ~ .iit J sa id , " No. " He said, "Sayyidah Aysha h~ .iit ~ J ha d asked Allah's Messe nger A abou t:

she asked, 'W here will the people be on that da y?' He sa id, 'Ontop of the bridge:•

FETTERS AND IRON RODS OF HELL

Allah has ·said:

Whe n th e fetters are o n their necks and the chai ns, they ar e

dragged, into the boili ng w at er . (40:n -n>

And He a lso said:

in a chain of seventy cubit s length. (69:32)

These th ings are for the inmates. The Prophet !lr. described

the m. A bow l was lying before him . He poi nted ou t to it. " I f a

st one like it is re leased from th e hea ven, i t w il l reac h ea rt h

before night though the d is tance from earth to heaven is five

hu ndred years. But if it is released from the top of the c hian of

Hell then it will take forty years to reach its botto m:· •

Sayyid ina Ubayy ibn Ka'b 4;i. said, " Each ri ng of this fetter

is like all the irons of the wo rld ." • ·

VA LLEYS, MOUNTAINS, R IVERS & DRINKS OF HELL

Th e Pl'ophet ~ s a i d :T her e is a m o u ntai n in H e ll , Sa' ud . I t is of fire. A

disbeliever w ill climb over it for seventy yea rs. Th en he will be

throw n d own.•

inmates accumulates. Some others sa y that it is one of th edoors of He ll.

Th e Qu r 'a n says:

Some scholars sa y that is a mountain in Hell in whose·

shade the inmates will try to ge t a na p . Th e smoke of Heil-fire

is very hot. 1t is described in the wo rds:

$ ~ I -1_; -INeither cool no r pleasant. (56:44)

As for ~ _ , . . ( p l a c e of destruction), Imam Mujahid said that

. it is a val ley in Hell while Ikrimah said that it is a s trea m of fire

in Hell at w hose banks ar e snakes like black mules. Whe n the

sn akes attack them, the inmates will try to save themselves byjumping in to the fire.

Sayyidina Anas ..;$b sa id that ~ _ , . . is a valley full of bloodan d pus.

On e of the rivers of Hell is named ~ . Sayyidah Ayshah~ i»'.rP was asked about the verse

So they shall soon e ncounter perdition. (19:59)

She said a t ~ wa s a river in Hell.

There is a prison In He ll called JU!I. Sayyid lna Abdullah

ibn Abbas'*' an d Ka'b '* ' said tha t JU!I is a place in Hell.

When it w ill be opened, al l the inmates of Hell wiU shr ie k

because of its heat.

The P r o p h ~ t 1ft, said that ther e is a wa lley on Hell called

The Prophet 1ft, also said, "O n the Day of Resurrection, the

Every little thing will rise above them an d th ey will be

adm itted into a prison in He ll called Bulas where they w ill be

given to d rin k the pu s and sweat of the inmates of Hel l.o

T here is a we ll in Hell ca lled .:>.rJI ..,-... It is for tt:ose reciters

of the Qur'an w ho recite it to be praised by me n an d perform

deeds to show off. The Prophet • said, 'Seek refuge form it."

The sahabah

..;$b asked, "O f Messenge r of Allah, w hat is

...,-..

.:>;-JI ?" He said, " I t is a va lley in Hell from which Hell itself

seeks refu ge seventy times every day. Allah has prepa red it for

the ostentatious schola rs.'' 0 ·

Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah • narrated that there ar e mills

in Hell which wi ll be dr iven by the ev il scholars. Some of those

who know them will recognise them an d ask them, "Why have

yo u been brought here? We use d to learn from you." They will

answe r, "Yes, we used to enjoin you w ith piety in the wo rld

bu t we did no t pu t that in practice ourse lves."

Allah has said about th em :

Do yo u enjoin virtue upon mankind, an d ye t yo u yourselves

forget it. (2;44)

Sayyidina Usamah ibn Zayd • narrated: I heard Allah 's

Messenger it. say, "A man will be brought on th e Da y of

Resurrec tion. His in testines would have emerged outside an d

he would be th rust into Hell. He will go round like a donkey

round a mill. Other inmates of Hell will ask him, "0 man, you

use<;! to enjOin piety on us an d forbid ev il. How are you here?"

He w ill say, "But, I d id no t pr actice what I preached, and I

perpetrated evil."

FUEL FOR FIRE

T he fire of Hell is fueled by tw o th ings:

1. Human beings an d

e Qu rtubie Tirmid hi. A version says that Hell seeks refuge from it a hu ndred times an d a nother

version. ' four hundred times.'

Allah has said:

the idols that we re worshi pped an d the stone of su lphur.

Allah says:

!Surely yo u and what yo u worship besides Allah s hall be

fu el of Hell.J (27:98)

Ibn Mubarak ~ kt .. _> reported that Sayyidina Abbas ibn

Abdul Muttalib . narra ted to Allah 's M e s s e n g e r ~ sa id,

"T hi s religion wil l re ign supreme ov e r al l religions till it

rea ches beyonq the oceans. Peo ple will advance horses in to the

oceans to propagate A llah 's rel igi on. A fte r that su ch peop le

wi ll come wh o wi ll recite the Qur 'an an d boast, "W ho can

recite better than us? Wh o can kn ow be tter than us?"

Then Allah's Messenger ~ sa id to the Saha bah 4;1., "D o

you se e a ny good in these people?" They sa id, "No". He said,

"They will be you r own people," meaning that they will be of

th is ummah. "And they will be fue l of He ll .''8

Imam Qurtubi explained the wo rd o J ~ ' J th at the s ton e

b u r ~ in He ll will be the stone of sulphur.

The reason wh y it will be used is that th e stone of sulphur · ·has five qu a lities:

(1) It is quickly comb ustible.

(2) It has a pu ngen t od our .

(3) It has a de nse smo ke.

(4) I t is sticky an d sticks on the body .

Some exegettes explain that the fire fuelled by stone is for

the disbelievers

VOTARIES OF TYRANTS WILL BE DOGS OF HELL

Th e votaries of ty rants ar e their workers an d the ev il scholars

who ar e their 'yes men' in everything they say- whether law ful

or un lawful. T he evil scho la rs ar e th e ones wh o enjoin piety

upon o thers bu t neglect to follow up in practice. They forbid ev il

bu t do not refrain from it. Th e workers of the ty ra nts follow in

the footsteps of these ev il scholars, as also the evil ora tors.

Ibn Mubarak re ported that Sayyidina Anas ibn Maalik •

narrated: Allah's M e e r ~ sa id , "On the night of th e

mi'raj I sa w people wh ose lips were being cu t by sc isso rs of

fire. When I aske d Jibril ~ about them, he sa id that they were

the ora to rs (who encou ra ged others to do good but neg lected

that) . An d they also recited the Book of Allah."

Ib n Mubarak 4# ~ also said that th e po lice w ho

further the w rongs of the tyrants are also the dogs of Hel l. (W e

beseech Allah to keep us safe fro m th is!)

·FOOD, DRINK & CLOTHING IN HELL

The inmates of Hell will ea t znqqum.

Therefore, there is no friend fo r him here today, nor any food

except foul vus, which none bu t the sinners <>at. (69-.36-37}

The wo rd .:;J-S- is th e pu s of th e inmates of Hell. The ir

clothes wi ll be of charcoal.

As fo r th ose who di sbeli t>ve, garments of fire shall be cut ou t

fo r them. (22:19)

Their garments of pitch. (14:50)

They will be given (n bitter, bad-smelling tree) to eat.

Th e inmates of H e ll will experience severe thirst an d

strong h unger. Th ey .-vi ii plead with th e in habitants o f

Paradi se that th ey sh o ul d le t them ha ve some of th e irsu stenance.

The words of the Qu r'an are:

of the Garde_n, "Pour on us some wate.r, or of what Allah has

provided yo u (in food)." They will reply, "Surely Allah has. forbidden both (water an d food) to the disbelievers . (7:50)

Bayhaqi has rej:>orted that Muhammad ibn Ka'b a l-Qura zi

sa id, "The inmates.of Hell will ma ke five su pplications. Allah

w ill reply to four of these bu t not to the fifth . Thereafte r, they

will make no call. Th e Qur'an says:

Ou r Lord, twice have You made us di e, an d twice have Yougiven us life. No w we confess ou r s ins. Is there a way out of(this)?" (40:11! ·

fo r th e ev ildoers there is no helper. (35:37)

THE LEAST PUNISHED IN HELL

Sayyidina N u'm an ibn Bashir n a r a t e d a Hadith that on

the Da y of Resurrrection the person who wil l receive the lea st

punishm en t will be made to wear sandals of fir e because of

w hich his brai n wo u ld begi n to boi l. •

HELL 'S COMPLAINT TO ALLAH

force an d its keepe r will s to p it. T he fire wi ll say, 'D o not co me

be tween me an d my sp ouse s e lse [wi ll s ur ro u nd a ll the peop le

a t once.' He ll wi ll be as ked who its s pouses a re, a nd it w ill say,

'Every a rrogant, ty rant.'0

Allah says:

thes e will be uncovered of the screen over them. Black smoke

will sp read about to a ll sides - to the right and left, to the for e

an d rear . Men and jinn will loo k at it and exclaim:

will be brought with sevent y th ousand reins, eac h will be

pulled by seventy thousand angels."• ·

Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Abbas • said about the kee pe r of

He lJ that the distance between his shoulder is a travel of on e

year. I f he will strike o nce with an iron rod then sevent y

thousand men will go d ow n to th e bottom of Hell."

CHAPTER THREE

WOMEN WHO RECEIVED TIDINGS OF HELL

TH E WIFE OF SAYYIDINA NUH

Allalt tlte Exalted, made the wife of Sayyidina Nli11 ~a11 examplefo r tlte disbelievers.

She was wife of a Messenger wh o preached to his people

fo r mi11e hundred and fifty years.

SAyy idina'NUh ~ i n v i t his people fo r nine hund red

an d fifty years to believe in the unity o(God. But they were

unmoved, except for a few people w ho believed during this

long period of time. Th e believers numbered about eighty - or,

according to so me, lesser than that. It is worth considering wh y

such a lengthy effort bore no res ult. Why did the people no t

accept their Prophet 's invitation? Every thinking inte ll igent

person is liable to ge t this question in to his mind.

On e of the several reasons wa s the mischievous attitud e of

his wife.

Th e Qur 'an speaks elaborately on th e refusal of th iswoman t o accept the invitation of he r husband an d her

bec<:>ming a hindrance in his mission.

Allah ha s struck a similitude for those wh o di sbelieve - th ewife of NUh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of

Ou r righteous servants, bu t they betroyed them, so that they

(their husband's availed t ~ e m no t hing whatsoever against

Allah: so it wa s said (to them), " Enter the Fire along with th e

entere rs." (66:10) ·

In hu man history, the wife of Sayy idina N uh wa s a ve ry

bad example among the wives of the preachers . In fact, she wa s

(monotheism ) an d - he r hu s ba nd ' s inv itatio n. S he betraved

him by incitng the peop le not to accept his inv itation. .

Wh y did s he re jec t h is cal l ? There is no answer to th is

Th is opin io n·is no t co rrec t. Schola rs of e xegesis an d his to ry

agree that gene rat ions that preceded Pr o ph et NU h ~ were

monotheists. Tabari has stated in 'T a rikh ' that on e hundred

cmd twenty s ix years se parated Sayyidina Aadam ~ aSayy idina NU h ~ - is also stated in Ahadith that before

Prophet NU h ~ , Sayy idina Aadam ~ - th e fa th er of

mankind- wa s a Prophet. Also, ·h is sons Sayyidina Shith ~an d Sayy idina Idris ~ w e Prop het-; an d Messengers having

been sent to their respective peoples. Th e exegettes ar e agreed

that Prophets were se n t to monotheist peoples, butSayy idina Nuh ~ was sent to ido laters. This is wh y h e is

called the firs t Messenger. Allah says:

An d certain ly We se nt NUh ~ to his people, so he tarr ie d

am on g th em a thousand years less f ift y ye a rs . T he n, th ede lug e se i ze d th e m wh il e they were ev il -doer s. So We

delievered h im and the in mates of th e Ark, and made it asign to the wo rlds . (29:14-15)

home is to drive away angels of mercy an d draw in the dev il.

Anyway, the peo ple of NU h ~ kep t the mod e ls in the ir

ho m es . Gradually, they forget the o rigin an d by th e next

generation th e re prese ntation s were ta ken a s gods . an dwo rshipped . T hey gave up wo rs hi p of Allah an d be lieved that

the ido ls gave them every thing.

Sayyidina NUh ~ to them fo r nine hundrea an d

appointed term. Surely th e term of Allah , when it comes , it

shal l no t b e deferred ; if yo u bu t knew. He said,"My Lord,

ha ve call e d my people night an d day, bu t my call in gincreases them .in naught bu t (their) feeli n g. An d su rel y

whenever I called them tha t You might fo rgive th em , they

pu t their fingers in th eir ears, and wrapped themselves with

thei r garments and persisted a nd showed vehement

arrogance. Then surely I ca ll ed them aloud; Then I spoke to

them publicly, an d I spoke to th e m secretly. So I said, "Seek

fo rgiveness of you r Lord; surely, He is ever Forgiv ing . He

will send down upon yo u rain in torrents, an d will help with

riches, an d sons, an d will assign to yo u gardens, an d will

assign to yo u rivers. What is th e matter with you that you

loo k no t fo r majesty in A llah, an d indeed He created yo u insta ges? H av e you not considered ho w A llah created s even

heavens on e above another, an d placed th e moon th erei n fo r

a light, an d placed the su n fo r a lamp? And Allah ha s caused

yo u to grow out of th e ea rth as a growth. then He sha ll return

yo u into it, an d bring yo u forth in a (new) bri nging fo rt h.

An d Allah has mad e for you the earth an expan se , that yo u

may traverse thereof th e open ways."

Niih sa id, "M y Lord, surely they disobeyed me and followed

hjm whose wea lt h and children have increased him in

naught bu t loss , an d th ey h av e devised a mighty devise. An d

th ey have said, 'D o no t leave your gods, no r leave Wadd, nor

Suwa, nor Yaghuth, no r Ya'uq, nor Nasr.' And indeed they

have le d many astray. Increase the evildoers in naught bu t

error!"

An d because of th e ir sins they were drowned, an d then

admitted into Fire, so th ey di d no t find fo r th emselves an yhe lper s besides Allah.

An d NUh sa id, "M y Lord, leave no t of the disbelievers an y

dw e i.Ier on th e earth. Surely, if You leave them, they will lea d

astray Your se rva nts, a nd will be.,;et no ne bu t m iscreant ,

ingrate ones. My Lord, forgive me and my parents an d hi m

wh o enters my house as a believer, an d th e believing me n

an d th e believing women. And Yo u in crease no t t he

Surpris ingly, Prop het Nuh 's $!1 wife - in spite of s tay ing

in th e house of a P ro phet - rejected m ono th eism a nd

pro ph e th ood. She ha d he r so n, Kin'an, too on he r s id e. H e

ope nly rejec ted his father.

Sayyidina NUh ~ fou r sons: Haam, $aam, Yafith an d

Kin' an. Except for th e last na med, a ll h is sons we re be lievers.

When he ha d pr eached for ni ne h undred and fi ft y long

years an d the peo ple showed no si gn of bel ief, Sayyidi na NU h~ wa s informed by revelation th at they were not dest ined to

be liev e . On ly those few that had believed wo u ld rem a in in the

fo ld s of Is lam . Allah o rdered him to make a boat.

Some scholars s ta te that the di mens ions of the ar k were:

1200 yards long an d 600 ya rd s broad . It was three - s toried.

T he animals, birds an d huma n beings occup ied each s torey.

Allah had commanded h im to take on it tw o pa irs of ev erykind. Allah sa id :

Th e ea rth a nd heaven received A llah's command to Jet out

water. Ea rth and the ea rthlings n1us t be drowned - only the

ar k of sa lva tioA must-sa il on it and be safe. Thus, wa ter poured

for th fro m heaven and ea r th a nd a ll the disobedient were

drowned . T he Believers were safe.

After th e d estruction of those people, a new ge neration

grew from the so ns of Sayyid ina Nuh ~ - Saam, Haam .and

Ya fith. Saam's descenda n ts ar e th e A rabs, Pe rs ians an d

Romans. The descendants of Yafith arc the Yajuj and Majuj, the

Tu rk s an d Saqa libah , and of Haam are th e Qubts (copts),

Berber an d the Ethiopians.0

for a hundred an d fifty dct y.s. When Allah comma nd e d th e

water to dr y, it stopped on Janel.

Allah said:

Some schola rs say that Judi is a ·mountain in the no rth of

Iraq . Th erea ft er, Is la m sp-read o n ear th . T he r e was no

disbeliever, rio r any .disobedient . All people were blessed wi th

faith and we re good worshippers. A ll disbelievers, including

Prophet Nlih's w i f ~ and son, pe rished.

Allah says:

Ou r righteous servants, ·bu t they betrayed them, so that they

(their husband's) availed them nothing whatsoever against

Allah so it w'as said (to them), "Enter the Fire along with th e

enterers." · ( 6 6 : ~ .: "•1Thes e word·s .do 'not.imply a be tr ay al on th e be d , but

be trayal of be lief. These women betrayed the ir hu sband to turn

the ir people g ~ i n them.

Thi s is th e story of th e w o m a n wh o disobeyed h e r

husba nd iQ o rder that sh e ma y have he r s ay . He used to

invite people to be lieve in on e G od an d to a band on th e

idols. He a lso urged them to shun the unnatura l act with

young boys .

Howe ve r, she ridiculed her husband in co-operation with

th e peo pl e . She called hi m insane. S urely, s he wa s an evi l .woman .

S he belonged to Sa du m wh o had degenrated in morals.

They ar e known to be the first people to commi t un natural

act with boys. They perpetrated ho mosexua li ty op enly and

felt no sh ame abou t it. Perhaps ou r co nte mp or a ries are like

these ancien t people, for, we can find people, toda y, wh o

boast about th e si n th ey co mmit without the least

com pu nction .

In addition to this sin, the people of Sayyidina Cu t ;'fill a lso

indulged in robbery. They snatched !l'erchandise of travellingtraders. They were a very bad people. They res ided in Sadum

near the border of Jord an an d Iraq.

THE PROPHET'S UPBRINGING

We have seen what kind of woman she was. Sayyid ina ·Lut~ h ad grow n up in different s urr o undings. H e ha d

s tre ngthened hi s monotheism under hi s uncle Sayy idina

Ibrahim ~ . He had also observed how his people had flung

. him into th e fire. After that, Sayyidina Lut ~ so ught

Sayyidina Ibrahim's ~ to migrate to preach to

peo pl e. He cast a n in s pec ting ey e an d found th e worst ofpeople in Sad um and Ammuriyah.

Allah says:

And Lut believed in hlm. An d he (Ibrahim) said, "S.urely lwill flee to my Lord. Surely he is th e Mighty, th e wise. (29:26)

Sa yy idina Lut ~ th e n married a woman of hi s

neighbourhood. It is said that she wa s Walihah. She bore him

two da ughters. Time flew. He invited the people to belief while

she called him insane. He foll owed in the footsteps of his uncle,

Sayyidina Ibrahim ~ an d invited people to piety and Allah

comm isioned him as a Prophet and Messenger. He ca lled them

l'O believe in one Allah and to shun i d o l o r s h i p He tried to

cure them of th e sexual diseases which ha d affect ed them,


homosexsuality -a nd highwaY. ro bbery.

He persisted in his miss io n, bu t th ey di d no t accept his

invitation. His wife paid him no ea r. Rather, s he th rea tened

him an d warned him.

Allah says;

And Lut, (rec all) when he sai d to hi s p eople, "S urely yo ucommit an indecency in which no one in th e w o rld s ha spreceded you. Do yo u come to males, an d cut the way, an d

comit vices in your assemblies?" (29:28-29)

The Qur'an reproduced their an swer.

However, Sayyidina Lu t not care about their th reats,

Their enmity and obstinacy did not deter him in the leas t and he

maintained to give his advice to them courageously.

created fo r you of your wives? Nay, you are a people

transgress in g li mits." (26:162-166>

Sayyidina Lut ~ continued to preach in spite of th ese

difficulties an d obstacles. I t is no t easy to trek th e path of Allah

an d invite the people.

IT IS NO T EASY TO BE A MUSLIM

People suppose that this path is laid with roses . Rather, it is

very difficult an d beset with hardship. However, ultimately,

Allah 's command prevails.

PROPHET LU T ,'5f3i9 FACED WIFE'S OPPOSITION

Prophet Lut's i@ l two daughters believed in him bu t his

wife re maine d a s taunch opponent . Sh e s ided with th e

opposing people in order that sh e build for herself a distinc t

personality . Sh e disliked obed ience to he r husband which an

orqinary woman is known for . Th e women of to da y are of the

same kind as her- regretably. ·

Th e exegettes have explained that when the angels came to

Prophet Lut ~ with the objective of punishing them, this

woman disclosed to the people that guests ha d arrived at Lut's~ house. Th e Qur'an de scribed this as a 'betrayal'.

Like his uncle, Sayyidina Ibriihim ~ . Sayyidina Lut ~wa s quick to hos t the guests an d honour them. It wa s the habit

of Prophet Ibrahim ~ t h a t he did not ea t till he ha d a guest

with him which is w hy he wa s called ,JI.<i,.:A}I (the father of

guests). Hi s nephew, Prophet Lut ~ had th e same trait; he

was always o n the look-out fc r guests.

On e da y, he wa s occupied on h is fields when the angels

Jibril ~ . Mika'i l ~ an d Is rafi l ifi!l came to him as beautiful

young me n an d requested hi m to take th em a s g u es ts

overnight. He too k them home and disclosed to them the ev i l -

ha bit of his people. "By Allah, I do no t know if there is anyone

worse than them on eacth."

H e too k them home afra id that f:tis peo pl e may not

s urround th ese young .me n . He told hi s w i f ~ no t to inform


an yone of his guests. She nodded but quietly slipped ou t of the,

house and disclosed to the peop le about the g uests. In other

words, she betrayed her husband .

That wa s a bitter moment when the people came to him

an d demanded that he hand over to the m his guests that they

ma y commi t evil wi th them. Indeed, they were th e worst

people in human history. The Qur 'irn says abou t th i sreg retabfe event.

An d inform them of th e guests of Ibrahim, (recall) when they

entered upon him, they said, "Peace!" He sa id, "S urel y we

ar e afraid of you." They said, "Be no t afraid surely we give

you glad tidings of a boy, possessi ng knowledge." He said,

" Do you give me glad tidings when old age ha s overtakenme? Of what do you then g ive me glad tidings?" Th ey said,

'W e give you glad tidings with truth so be no t yo u of th edespairing." He said, "A nd wh o de s pairs of th e mercy of

Allah except those wh o ar e astray?" He said, "What is your

business then, 0 Messengers?" They said, " We h av e been

sent to a guilty people, (all) except the household of Lut,

surely we ar e going to deliever them al l together, except his

wife, of whom we hav e decreed that sh e shall be among th e

lingerers." So when th e Messengers came to th e ho useholdof Lut, he sa id, "S urely yo u are a people unkow (to me)."They said, "Nay, we have come to yo u with that concerning

which th ey have been doubting, an d we have brought yo u

th e truth, an d s urely we are truthfu l. So t rave l with your

household in a part of th e night an d follow their backs. An d

le t no t anyone of you tu r n round but go wither yo u ar e

commanded."

An d We decreed for hi m that comm andment that th e roots of

those (guil ty people) shoul d be cut of f in the mo ring. An d

the p eo ple of the town came rej oldng. He sa id, "Surely th ese

are my guests so disgrace me not, an d fear Alah, and degrade

me not . " They sa i d, "D id we not forbid you from

(entertaining) th e people." He said, "These are my daughters,

if yo u would be doing." By your life (0 Prophet) they

wandered blindly in their intoxication. So the shout seized

They sai d, "O f Lull We are Messengers of your Lord. They

wi fe. Surely whatsoever b efalls them shall befall her. Surelytheir appointed t ime is th e m or ning. Is not th e morning

nigh?" n1:81)

FATE OF PROPHET LUT'S ~ WIFE

She always demanded this day. She wa s the one who ha d

in fo rmed th e people of th e g ues ts. As a result th ey tr ied to

commit wrong with the guests who were Allah's ange ls tha t

had come in the appearance of beautiful lads. Sayyidina L ut~ stood in the ir way wh ile his wife ha d incited them, not

kn ow i ng that th ey will face a telling punis hm ent . Fina lly,

A llah ordered that th ey should be punished to ex tinction.

Surely their appointed t im e is th e morning. (11:81)

When they ha d s urround ed his ho use th rea te ning ly,

Sayyidina Lu t ~ ha d w ishe d that they shou ld perish. But,

there is a time for everything. They were given time to repent.

This is ev idence of Allah 's mercy. But, they insisted on doing

evil. So, he took his daughters, Rita an d Azya an d his old wife

an d went out. There wa s an ea rthquake. Stones ra ine d from theheaven as happen ed later on w ith the owners of the e lepha nts.

Sayyidina Jibr il ~ ca rr ied th e i n h a b i t a ~ o on his two wings

an d took it up to the heaven where he threw it down wrong

side up. When Prophet Lut's ~ w hea rd the people shr ie k

an d turned back to see, she too wa s punished in the sa me way

as her peop le.

she used to harass the Prophet ~ an d back up her

disbelieving husband, the Prophet's uncle.

Initially, Allah commanded the Prophet i1t to give the call

to his relateves secretly.

So, he invited his closest relatives and siad, " I invite yo u to

accept tw o words which ar e light on the tongue but heavy in

Hist o ry 6peaks for that. But, his uncle Abu Lahab took fami ly

honour as a shiel d an d vigorously opposed th e Prophet ~ inspite of the very dose kin ship.

He said to th e othe r gues ts, " By Allah, this is ba d an d

sha me ful. Check his hand before other people check him." Abu

Talib said, " By Allah, as long as we are a live, we s hall defend

him. By Allah, they cannot come to you wi th thei r arm ies an d

supporters before we_are buried in th e g rave." Th e Prophet's~ a un t, Safiyah If.:&- .&ill ~ J said, try ing to pacify her brother,

Abu Lahab, "W ill yo u be pleased w it h the disgrace of your

nephew and of Islam? By Allah, scholars hav e been te lling us

that th er e will be a Prophet from th e proge n y of Abdu l

Muttalib. He could be the one." This cau sed Abu Lahab's rage

to increase. He said, "B y Allah, th is is w ron g an d doubt.ful

women shou ld restrict the ir speech within their bedroo ms. I f

a ll tribes of Qu rays h an d o ther Arabs stan<l up against us t h ~ ,by Allah, we sha ll be unab le to stand aga inst them."

Then he threatened the Prop het * ' saying, "I will stak e my

wealth an d chi ldren to throttle this call. His wife also abettea

him an d both husband an d wife become st aun ch enemies of

the P rophet !i\1. .When th e P r o ph e t . decided to invite th e Quraysh to

Islam, he went to Batha. He climbed a mountain an d ca lled out

t11e Quraysh. When they were assembled, he sa jd, "What do

you say - if I tell you t11at your enemy will attack you in th e

morn ing or ev ening, w ill yo u believe me?" They co nfirmed

tha t they would. He said, " I am warning you that I see a severe

chastisement. .. " Abu Lahab interrupted, "Did you sum mon us

for this reason. May you pe rish."O

At that, Allah revealed :

When sh e heard this, Um m Jamil picked up a stone and

looked ou t for the Prophet . that she might strike him. He wa s

sitting in Masjid ai-Haram. Ab u Bakr ..$>was with him. When he

sa w her, Abu Bakr 4;c exclaimed, " 0 Allah's Messenger, there

she is! I fear s he might see yo u." He said, "She cannot see me,"

an d he -recited th e Qur'an. Indeed , s he di d not see him . S he

asked Abu Bakr 4;i., "0 Abu Bakr, I have heard that your friend

has made fun of me." He said, " By A llah, he has not done that."

She turned a way, saying. "The Quraysh w ill know t11at I am a

chief's daughter." She recited in verse

This surah is evidence of th e Prophet's mission. It is a clearmiracle. Th e surah clearly says that bo th of them will go to

Hell, bu t neither of them could even preten d that they were

Muslims. Th e Ulnmn have stcssed this point.

UM M TAMIL'S OPPOSITION

After th e revelation of th is surah, Abu Lahab an d hi s wife

prevailed upon the ir sons U tbah and· Utaybah to divi>rce th e

Pro phet' s *" daughters. Wh ile Utbah divorced Sayy ida h

Ruqayah If.:&-..;., > he did not cause any other trouble to the

Prophet ~ , Utaybah, on th e other hand , wa s marrie d to ·

Sayyidah Umm Kulthu m ~ .l.t .r 'J bu t the marriage wa s not

consumated till then. He me t the Prophet Jil1. an d abused and

harassed him. He prayed against hi m, "0 Allah, le t one of your

dogs subdue him." Wh en Abu Lahab heard of this, he said to

his son," My son, I no more consider you sa fe."

Hibar ibn ai -Aswad narra ted : We w ished "o take up

lodgings in the cathedral of a monk during our journey . But, he

said to us , "O f Arabs, wh o brought yo u here? Lions roam

about here like sheep. Abu Lahab said, "Because of my old age,

it is my right to reside here." Th e monk said, "Yes, Abu Lahab,

you ca n stay here." Abu Lahab said to us, "Muhammad ha s

cursed my son. So, I fear for him. So, pile up your luggage one

on the other an d put my son's bedding on that. You sleeparound him on the floor." Wr:> di d as he sai d an d let Utaybah

sleep on the pile of our l u g g < ~ g e . We sk•pt around him. Abu

Lahab also slept on the floor with us. A lion c<1me in the night,

smelled each of us. No t finding his game among us, he jumped

ov e r the pile an d tore Utaybah to pieces, severing his head

from the body. Utaybah's last words were, "1 did sa y that

Muhammad is the most truthful of al l me n ." Th us, he died as

th e Prophet ! j . ha d prayed that he sh ou ld . Abu Lahab

confessed, "I knew he could no t avert Muhammad's curse."

This event, too, is evidence. of the Prophet's . ~ # > true mission.

But, Ab u Lahab maintained his·oposition and stubbornness.

Rather, he wa s as arrogant as before, though might an d power

belongs to Allah alone.

Books of sira/1 tel l us that Umm Jamil would lay down

thorns in the night on the Prophet's ~ path. He wo u ld walk

over them in the morning without showing displea sure. This

disconcern matle Um m Jamil more irritated.

Sh e was rude an d abusive. Sh e wo ul d sa y to people,

"Muhammad is a sorcerer." [We seek refuge in Allah.] She

made her husband follow the Prophet Jj . during days of Hajj

an d tell every visitor whom the Prophet Jilt. preached that he

wa s a liar." [May Allah pretect us from such thought]Accord ing to Imam Bu khari, th e Prophet ! j, could no t

stand up fo r tw o or three nights because of hi s illness. Sh e

came ne a r him a nd sa rd, " 0 Muhammad, 1 hope th a t yo u r

devil has forsaken ym ·. I do not se e hi m near you." Allah

revealed this verse:


By th e morning brigh tn ess, by th e night, w h en ·i t is st il l,

your Lord ha s not forsaken you, no r is H e disp leased. (93:1-JJ

Th e exegettes sa y that Um m Jamil w ill fare in Hell as it is

de..c;cribed in the Qur'an. She will carry on her back wood of

znqqu.111 an d a chain of fire will be round her neck.

Th e exegettes sa y that the words ~ .:r ~ ~ mean

that a rope of fire will be tied round he r neck in Hell. She will

be raised at the edge of Hell and then thrown inside. This will

be a continuous punishment on her. She will carry wood in

Hell an d throw at he r husband.

HER FATE IN THE WORLD

She faced a similar punishment in this life too. She used to

place pieces of wood an d thorns in the Prophet's *-path. One

day, while she wa s doing that, she sa t down awhile on a stone.

An angel came an d pulled th e rope wi th which sh e carried

wood (to place on the path) an d sh e was starngled to death.Immediately she wa s flung in the sp arkling Fire.

AJiah says:

an d hi s wife - the ca rrier of firewood; upon he r ned<. a rope

of pal m fibres. (111:4-5)

Th e cruel and the disbelievers get this return fo r the ir

deeds.

Ab u Lahab died in Makkah afte r the Battle of Badr.

Though he had not participated inthis

battle in person ye t hewa s much grieved at the defeat an d he died within seven days

of the Battle. He died of a contagious disease of the skin. His

sons left him unattended for many days after death. His body

burst open an d gave ou t a ba d smell. People rebuked them for

leaving thei r dead father unattended in the house which wa s

stinking with odour. Hi s sons were scared that the contagious

disease might effect them. When people rebuked them , they

o rdered o ne of their s laves, an d a ll of them together threw

wa ter on hi m from a distance. They the n ti e d hi m up an d

dragged him to a higher place in Makkah where ~ h e y dug a pi t

an d t ~ r e w him into it. Then they filled it up with stones from a

d istance. This wa s his punishment in this world an d he will

face a egrading chastisemen t in the Hereafter.

Abu Lahab was seventy years old when he died. .

shor.t, this woman too faced the same consequence as the

Creato r to obey the c reated. A husband should ~ obeyed:.only

if it does no involve disobedience to Allah - and in s uc h

obedience lies sa lvation from the Fire.

SALUMI AND HIRODIYA

Th e punishment against causing hardship to a Prophet is

consignment to Hell. Obviously, then, the punishmen t to onewh o kills a Prophet wo uld be much mo re s e v ~ Hirodiya an d

Salum i we re respectively mo the r and daughter and the worst

of women in history.

Sayy idina Eesa ~ was born without a father and hi s

materna l cousin Sayyidina Yahya ~ wa s also born about the

same time. His father, Sayyidina Za kriya ~ w a s very old and

his n o t h e r wa s barren. This happened is Palestine du ring the

reign of Ruman .

SAYYIDINA YAHYA ~Le t us fi rst read about this Prophe t ~ . T h e Qur 'an

mentions that his father, Sayyidina Zakariya ~ . d i d no t give

up hop e fo r a so n ev en in hi s ol d age. He observed that

Sayyidah Maryam r'j....JI ~ go t 'o ut of season ' frui t in Bayt

ul-Maqdis. So, he prayed to A llah:

Zakariya. (Recall) when h e calle d upon hi s Lor d , ca lling

lowly. He said, " My Lord! M y bon es ar e weakened wi thi n

me , an d my head is listenin g with hoariness, an d I have

never bee n unbles t in my p rayer t o You, My Lord ! An d I fear

my ki nsf o lk aft er I am gone, an d my wife is barren, so gran tme from Yourself a h ei r, w ho shall in heri t me an d in her it th eho u se ho ld of Ya'qub, an d make him, my Lord, acceptable (to

You)." (19:2-6)

Sayy idina Za kariya ~ wished to have o ffspring that his

son ma y take over his prophethood. Allah acepted his p r a y ~ r .When he wa s engaged in prayer on e da y, an angel brought to

hi m glad t idings of .a righteous son w ho w ill be a Prophet,

named Ya hya- no on e ha d that name till then.

He was taken unawares at t he su d den g la d tidings. He

exclai med tha t his wife was barren an d he wa s o ld.

Th e ctngel to ld him:

He sa id, "So it shall be! Your Lord says, 'That is easy fo r m e,an d indeed I created you aforet ime, when yo u were

nothing." (19:9)

Hi s wife became pregnan t. Sayyidina Eesa ~ was also

born during these days. Some say that the wi fe of Sayyidina

Za kariya ~ an d Sayy idah Maryam ~ became p regnant

almost simultaneous ly. ·

Sayyidi na Zakar iya ~ ta u gh t a nd t rained hi s son,

Sayyidina Yahya ~ a religious lines. Allah ha d promised

him th at H e wo uld ma ke his so n a ch ief an d a chaste and pious

man.

An d We gav e him wis do m while ye t a child, and tenderness

from Us, an d pu rity. And h e wa s G od -fearing; an d d ut ifu l to

hi s parents, and h e was not arrogant, reb ell io us. Peace b e ·

· up on him, the day he wa s born and the da y he d ies, and the

da y he will be raised up alive. (19:12-15)

He wa s an adh ere nt to Islamic wa y o f life an d comm and s

from ea'rly youth. He would preach to the chil dren of Is ra' il

and ad v ise them to shun osten tation a nd association. Sayy idina

Eesa ~ also began to preach abou t the same time,· an d he

helped hi m in the ta.sk. ln order to purify pe op le from s in, he

would g ive them a. bath in the River j orda n. Th e C hr istian ca ll

Th e Banu lsra ' il were going th rough ex tre me mi schief. Th eKing Herod An t ipas wa s madly in lov e with h is si ster -in-law

(brother's w ife) an d they ha d illicit re lationship. He wanted to

marry her , bu t that was disallowed in . th eir religion (as taught

by ·P rophet Musa ~ ) . He .sough t a ruling in h is favour from

Sayyidina Yahya ~ . bu t he told him tha t s he wa s not lawful

lo him : On hearing this, his beloved was en ra ged an d th ou ght

When he ma de advances, s he sh o u ld as k him for (Sayy idina)

Yahya's head . Salumi di d as her mother sa id to he r. While

dancing, she s tripped herse lf of he r garme nt s o ne by one, an d

ma de the king drink plent y w ine. When he sought to make

love to her, she asked for n d i n a Yah ya ~ to be killed , an dhe gave orders accordingly. Th e Pr ophet's hea d was b ro ught to

the king in a go lden tr ay . A miracle was di spl ayed . The head

spoke the same words, "She is no t law ful for you!" Th e king

an d his co urtiers were stu pe fied on hearing that.

When Sa yyidina Zakariy a learnt that his ~ wa s killed , he

cursed hi s murd e rers an d they died a t th e instant. Whe n

peop le le arnt o f th a t th ey s ei zed re v e n ge from Prophet

Zakariya ~ and slew him while he was in hi s chambe rs .

How eve r, these eve nts brought a s pa te of mis fortunes on Banu

lsr a' il. Allah ca used Bakht Nasr to o ppress them. H e played

havoc with them an d leve lled d own the ir ci ty an d te mple an darreste d e ve ry s urviving o ne o f th e m . Allah d estroys th e

tyrants in thi s way .

A llamah Ibn Kathir has written in nl-Bidayallll wa an-N i/myall:

Many reasons a re mentione d for killing Sayy idina Yahya ~ .Th e mo s t well-kno wn of them is that the king of Da mascu s

wanted to marry a woman w ho wa s closely re lated to him w hich

made he r unlawful for him . S ayy id ina Yahya ~ whim to do that. H ence, the w oma n de manded fro m the king that

the Prophet shou ld be killed . When the head of Sayyidina Yahya~ was brought in a tray, the woman loo ked at it and died at

the very moment. Some others say that the Queen was in lovewith Sayy idina Yahya ~ an d as ked him to m ee t her bu t he

fo undatio n of the mosque of Damascus was being laid , I sa w

to an o the r ve rsion, " It loo ked as though he was mudered at

that time." I t is said that his head was buried under the p illar

Ibn As akir has me ntio ned the reason for killing Sayy idina

Ya hya : i . ~ . H e said: A prince ha d divo rced his wife with three

mea ns of Allah's displeassure then shun it . Do not go nea rit . And when yo u learn that something draws one near

Allah, th e n make it a point to do it tha t will take yo u to

Paradise.

This book is also an inv itaion to the women who let thei r

g rown up daughters move about un ve iled on the plea that they

ar e yet 'children', not yet married . Whether a grow n-up gi rl is

mc1rried o r no t, she has to obseve the veil, none of he r bo dy

Men also have a great ha nd in training daughters and sons.

Paradise or Hell. H they encou rage her to obey Allah then they

will go to Paradise bu t if they le t he r pursue her desires then

will take them to Hell even if they ar e cons tant at snlnh,fasting, hajj <tnd righ teous deeds.

0 People! Do no t commi t op ress ion by a llowing women

false liberty an d eq uality that sh e ma y do w ha t s he likes. What

kind of equality you want? Allah says:

Me n are th e managers of th e affairs of women because Allah

has ma de th e on e to excel th e other, an d because of what they

expend of their riches (for them). (4:34)

Also:

An d th e male is no t like the female. ( 3 : . ~ 6 )Th e Prophet iJ. said, "0 women, give charity, for, I have

seen in Hell more women (than men)." T hey asked, "0

Messenger of Allah, wh y is that so?" He said, "Y ou have the

habit to curse other people and to disobey your husband." 8

In- his final will the Prophet £ltf. le ft instruct"ions for women

that m en should protect th em and not leave th em free topursue their desires.

But, today's ma n is disobedient to the Prophet's will. He

has giveri woman a free rein an d she does what she likes in the

na me of 'female liberty' an d equality. Thus, she is a partner of

home nudi ty, s in, indecency an d 'sex-worship'. Great people

like grad uates advocate equa l representation fo r women in

assemblies.

0 Muslim woman! Pay no need to these men. T hey will

take yo u to Hell. Listen to th e message in th e Qur 'an that

invites .you to Paradise. Li ste n to it an d co nd u ct yourself

according to it. Allah will grant yo u s uccess.

An d stay in you .r houses, an d disp la y no t yo ur adornmentlike th e displaying of th e (time of ) former paganism; an d

es tablish salalt an d pa y the za kah , an d obey Allah an d Hi s

M essenger. Allah only d esires to take away from yo u al l

abomination, 0 people of the ho u se hold (o f Muhammad),

an d to purify you with a thorough purifying.

An d re member that which is recited (by th e Prophet in) yo ur

ho use s of the revelations of Allah an d th e Wisdom. Surley

Allah is ever S ubtile, Aware. <33:33-34)

These instructions a re fo r the holy wives of the Prophet f3an d the believing wo men. The wives of the P r o p h e t ~ a re the

most superior women of this ummnh. Allah commands them

that they must stay home. They were disallowed to go out ofthe house unnecessarily. They were told to o bserve the ve il,

keep up snlah, pa y znka/1 an d obey Allah an d Hi s Messenger li!).

When they do that, Allah w ill purify them.

Every woman of th is ummnh is expected to follow thes e

guidelines. Let no o n e imagine that these a re orders

exclusively for the Prophet' s ~ w i v e s . Rather, every command

in th is verse applies to every Mus lim woman- the veil, s tay ing

in the ho me, snlnh, znknll, righteo us deeds, and so on . Every

woman must observe them.

W(> pray to Allah to forgive us an d to give us security. We

pray to Him to guide us, to give us prosperity an d to pro tect us

from Hell.

We pray to Him to cause this ou r deed - and other deeds -

to add to our good deeds in th e sca le on th e da y of
