WHAT WAS WOMEN AND MARRIAGE LIKE IN THE

1920S ?

• There were women who were called flappers and everyone wanted to be like her.

• Kids were raised and educated differently in their families.

• Divorce and family rules and requirements were different.

WHO WERE FLAPPERS?

• Young western women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was considered appropriate

behavior.

• Teenagers and young women spent their time having fun instead of settling down to raise children.

• They wanted to spend the time they had enjoying all that life had to offer.

• Postwar prosperity allowed for leisure time and the means to spend that time drinking, dancing, and hanging out with free thinkers.

WHAT WERE KIDS LIKE IN THE 1920S ?

• Children used to be considered small adults.

• Married couples were much more likely to be openly affectionate with each other. But as the economy strengthened and more and more middle-class fathers gained respectable careers, they began

to psychologically draw apart from their families.

• Women and men married for mostly love and affection in the 1920’s and had children.

• Children’s grammar and education was greatly improved in the 1920’s. Previously, they stayed at home with their mothers to

assist with work.

How was marriage/divorce different in the 1920s ?

• Women had more power due to the voting rights and many decided to do work outside, but nonetheless, some decided to stay with the whole “stay at home” route.

• Divorces were becoming more common but not yet considered a major social problem

• Marriage made a woman a legal non-entity for the purposes of owning property or businesses, signing contracts, or any other acts of personal business.
