PROLOGUE
T
here isn't a man alive who hasn't
thought, "If I lose my hair, will
women still be attracted to me?"What does a woman consider important
in a man? This sort of question, common to
magazine polls, generates answers that are
hardly surprising. Women seek someone
with good listening skills, a sense of humor,a steady income and an acceptance of self.
An abundance of hair is not one of the usual
concerns. If you're a decent guy, women
aren't that worried if there is hair on your
head or not.
That's why I wrote this book - to allow
other guys a glimpse of what I've learned
over the years, while experiencing my "ups

and downs" of hair loss - the process that ledto my final stand. It has been a hard-won
victory, but one worth the time and grief. I'm
willing to share it with you. All you need to
do is invest a little time and open your mind.

Hair Loss and History
Hair loss has been an issue for
thousands of years. During the
Roman Empire, it was considered
a deformity. Julius Caesar (circa 50 BC)wore a laurel wreath crown to cover his
balding head. In the 1700s, wigs were worn
as a fashion statement. No doubt quite a few
men concealed a bald spot. In 1897, a
Boston-based company advertised a remedy
entitled Burnett's Cocaine for the Hair. It
was suppose to cure dandruff and grow new
hair simultaneously. An ad in the early
1900s, touts Dr. Scott 's Electric Hair Brush
Grows New Hair. Today, men are freezing
hair follicles for when there is a cure for
baldness in the future. The quest for hair has
1

been with us as long as we have walked the
earth and not much has changed over the
past several hundred years. Men still think
they're abnormal if they're losing their hair.
Best estimates are that 10,000,000 men
start balding each year. It's genetics, some-thing we have little control over. The psy-
chological impact is clear when given the
countless dollars forked out each year for
hair replacements, toupees, special sham-
poos, and so forth. Hair loss can be a devas-tating experience. In one case, a young man,
a professional model, seriously considered
committing suicide because he was starting
to go bald. It's a profound change that many
men face sometime during the course of
their lives.

From my perspective, there's really nocure for baldness. I believe we ' re only as
sick as our secrets and only as healthy as
what we're able to let go of .

Childhood
As a child, I was blessed with a
great head of hair. "You're lucky
to have curly hair, " was the usual
compliment. Women would enjoy running
their fingers through my thick locks - not a
bad deal for a five or six-year old kid. I have
to admit that my hair was my pride and joy
at a very young age. I had a strong attach
ment to it. As I grew older, I could never
fathom what life would be like without it. In
fact, any thought of not having it would spin
me into unreasonable fear - how could I live
without my wonderful headof
hair? Likemany others I went through good hair days
and bad ones. Nevertheless, I had hair and
that was what mattered.

School Days
Iguess it was in the sixth grade when I
started to really pay attention to other
kids' hair. It seemed like all my
friends had straight hair and mine was curly.
Every kid just wants to fit in and my hair
wouldn't allow me to do that. So I devised a
remedy - I would shower every morning and
then clamp a sailor's cap, flipped down, on
top of my curls. By the time my hair dried,
at noon, it was straight and I was ready to
lose the cap.
By junior high, I was blow drying my hair
justto
keep it straight. If my friends onlyknew! No doubt they did and were doing the
same thing, but no one broke the code of
silence about their morning hair routine. I
7

grew to detest days when it rained. Themoisture would foil my Herculean efforts
and my hair would return to a frizzy curl
which was worse than its normal curl on any
given day. To circumvent the curls, I did it
all; parting my hair on the side, then partingit down the middle in an effort to find the
best way to keep it straight. I was constant-
ly checking out my hair in the bathroom mir-
ror before lunch or between classes to make
sure it looked just right.

When I entered high school, I was theluckiest man on earth. Big curly hair was
hip and now others began to envy my curls.
A friend of mine even had his hair
permed so it would be curly. I understood
his feelings - every morning he had to look at his straight hair while everyone else's was
curly. Of course, his chemically induced
curls were a much easier solution than my
three-year junior high battle to keep my hair
straight.
My friend's need to fit in gave me insight
into just how big of a deal this hair thing
was. All the guys tuned right into his change
and I knew they thought it was funny. Now
that the wheel had turned, I was in vogue for
many years to come.

The Beginning
A
fter years of alternating between
loving and hating my hair, the
unthinkable began to happen.
Around the age of twenty-five, I began to
lose it. It was nothing too dramatic, just
some thinning; it didn't feel as thick as it
usually did. The vague feeling of anxiety
was short-lived and soon it turned to a gen
uine full-blown fear. Within a year of my
twenty-fifth birthday, my worst nightmare
was playing out in front of my eyes. The
cute kid with the thick curly hair was turning
into an "old" man with a bald spot.Everything told me balding was unac
ceptable. Society does not favor bald men;
at least that was the message blared on mag-
13
8/6/2019 Women Like It Both Ways

azine covers and billboards. Hair was good, bald was not. At the time, I don't believe I
knew any men who were bald. Sure, there
was a teacher back at school who had lost
some hair, but he was older and that is what
happens to older guys. It did not happen totwenty-six year old men.
I believe my hair loss would have been
much easier to handle if I'd had a friend or a
role model who was suffering from the same
affliction, but I didn't. I felt like I was the
only man in the world going through this
devastating loss. Society reinforced my
fears that without hair, I was nothing. I told
myself if I didn 't do something to stop this
process, I would never have another girl
friend and my life would be over.
It's hard to describe how a grown man
14

could be so consumed by the fear of a littlepatch of disappearing hair on the back of his
head. When I'm asked to explain it, the best
example I can give is to liken it to the sheer
panic some people have for public speaking.
Standing up and talking in front of a largegroup of strangers puts some people into
near hysterics. It conjures up all of one's
deepest fears, the fear of the unknown, and
the fear of not being accepted. But worst of
all, the fear of being laughed at by others.
Many days I woke up and my first thought
was, "Oh my God, I'm, losing my hair!"
Saving it became my all encompassing pur-
pose in life, my raison d'être.

Help
Camouflage was the first method I
employed to ensure the top por-
tion of the back of my head was
always covered. My friends dubbed this
"the twist" since I twisted my curls into a
kind of a knot to cover the emerging bald
spot. There was no brown hair spray on the
market at that time, so "the twist" was theonly means I had of covering up the truth. I
became convinced everyone was staring at
the back of my head, riveted on the bald
spot. The worst times were when I stood in
line at the supermarket, or was seated at astadium with countless people sitting behind
me. Enjoying the game was the last thing on
my mind; I bought a significant number of
17
8/6/2019 Women Like It Both Ways
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/women-like-it-both-ways 25/66
souvenir caps to artfully cover my bald spot.
It was the only solution. If I kept the spot
covered, I knew the people behind me
wouldn't be wondering how such a young
guy was going bald. Were they actually pay-
ing attention to my own personal nightmare?Probably not, especially after a couple of
innings and a few beers. Reality did not
intrude on my fears; I was sure they were

staring at me during the entire game, or atleast between innings.
Pool parties and days on the beach were
the greatest problem I had. I've spent a lot
of time, over the years, surfing and being in
the water, where you have absolutely nocontrol over your hair. My hair went where
it wanted to go and my bald patch could not
be effectively covered. It's hard to enjoy a
full day of surfing when your mind is con-
stantly on your hair.

The Search
Armed with disposable income, I
began to search for a means to
save my hair. Within walking
distance from my office, was a clinic thatclaimed they could stop my hair from falling
out. I went in for a consultation, liked what
they had to say, and within a week I started
the program. Although the process seemed
expensive, I thought it would work because
it cost so much.
The treatment began in a chair similar to
one you would find in a barbershop. A
woman would rub my scalp with something
they called hair rejuvenator. There were
three or four types of this formula and she
would alternate which one she used each
21

time I visited. She stimulated my scalp witha vibrator that was supposed to open the hair
roots to allow the formula to reach where it
was needed. The result would be hair
growth, or so they claimed.
I continued the treatments for sevenmonths. Enough time for me to realize that
for two visits per week, at $60 per treatment,
I had spent about $3,400 dollars. Added to
that cost was the special shampoo I used to
keep my hair strong between treatments.During that time, there was no change in my
hair. If anything, it thinned! Of course, they
encouraged me to continue the treatments
and no doubt, I would see results very soon.
It was my first lesson that "retaining my
hair" was going to be a lot harder than I had
imagined.

Back in the 1980s, Minoxidil was gainingin popularity. When it first came out on the
market, it was only available by prescription,
which required a visit to a physician. It was
reputed to stop hair loss and, in some cases,
grow new hair. The prescription set me back
about six hundred dollars for a six-month
supply. Unfortunately, I didn't have any real
improvement; therefore, I had found no rea
son to continue the medication. A week after
I stopped taking the prescription, I read how
it could cause high blood pressure. Given
that possibility coupled with having to go to
my doctor each month for the rest of my life,
the decision to abandon this miracle drugwas an easy one. Some paths in life become
easier to follow as decisions to be made
become clearer and more sensible.

The Search Gets Serious
Iswitched gears and started searching
for something permanent; something
that would last forever so I would
never have to look back. One day I found
my permanent solution in an ad on the sports
page - hair replacement was the answer to
all my problems. According to the adver
tisement, they would take the good hair from
the sides and back of my head and surgical
ly replace it where my hair was falling out.
The clinic was in Pennsylvania, some
thing I thought was a plus because no one
would know me there since I lived inCalifornia. I could fly there, come back to
work in a week or two and look great. I
can't tell you what a tremendous feeling it
25
8/6/2019 Women Like It Both Ways
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/women-like-it-both-ways 33/66
was to start a new process. The same euphoria surfaced; the hope that I had finally found
a solution to my problem.
I booked a flight and was on a plane with
in a month of finding the ad in the paper. As
I sat in the hotel, the night before I was to
have my surgery, I thought of how all my
dreams would come true - a permanent solu
tion to my daily nightmare. The next day I
drove to the clinic in my rental car. I could
not wait to get inside the building, but the
excitement I felt soon turned into anxiety.
Since they were going to perform surgery on
me that day, I expected a very professional
and pristine environment. The office wasnot very clean and the nurse who greeted me
had stains on her uniform. That pretty much
settled things for me. I sat through the pre-

liminary discussion about the procedure and
when it was over, I told the nurse it was not
fo r me and I left. I went back to the hotel
knowing I made the right choice. I can't
imagine what I would look like today if I
had gone through with the procedure. When
I arrived back in Los Angeles, I told a friend
the whole story and he couldn't understand
why I would do such a thing. He had no way
torelate to my sense
of insecurity about myhair loss. He had a full head of hair.
The trip did not diminish my resolve to
do something about my hair. I was still
determined to get my hair back. I decided I
needed something natural that didn't involvesurgery. Watching television late one night I
ran across another option. Within minutes, I
was on the phone to set an appointment.

After an hour consultation, I left a nonrefundable deposit of $250 for my very own
hairpiece. It would be fitted in two weeks.
When I returned for the fitting I brought
along all the exuberance and hope I had
packed for my trip to Pennsylvania. Theoffice was professional and clean and in my
mind, that was a good sign given the last
place I'd been. As I waited for my appoint
ment, I scanned the numerous pictures on
the wall, all showing other clients with full
heads of hair. I would soon be part of the
club.
My initial reaction to the hairpiece was a
surprise. It looked like it belonged to a rock
star. It was much too long but the lady
assisting me assured me she would shape it
to my desired look. I was still a little nerv-

ous. The woman braided my hair into ahorseshoe-like shape, starting at the right
front side along the hairline about an inch
and a half above my ear. She worked her
way around the back and below my bald spot
and then over to the left front, as she com
pleted the horseshoe. The braid was tiny, but
I could feel it stick out, as I put my hands on
my head. She proceeded to attach the hair
piece by sewing it to the braid with brown
thread, a process that took about twenty min
utes. Once that was completed she cut the
hair in a style I really did not find that
appealing. I could still feel the braid under
the hairpiece and wondered what someonewould think if they ran their fingers through
my hair. Let's get honest here, we all know
who I was doing the hair thing for, right?
29

Why else would I be going through thiswhole ordeal if God hadn't made women?
The stylist had nearly completed the cre
ation of her masterpiece when I noted there
was a three-inch section at the front of the
hairpiece that was not connected to anything. "What should I do with 'that' part if
I was going sur fing or if the wind was blow-
ing?" I asked. Without a moment's hesita
tion, she pulled out a jar of what appeared to
be rubber cement. She twisted open the lid
and began to vigorously apply some goop to
my scalp and forehead. Before I knew it, she
was pressing on the new hair so it would
adhere to my head.It s
truck meas
quiteinsane, gluing your hair to your head just so
you can go swimming! Not quite the picture
I had in mind on my way to the appointment.

She informedme
the new hairpiecewould need maintenance on a continual two
or three-week basis. As my hair grew, the
braid would loosen and I would need to have
it tightened up. I wasn't thrilled with this
news, nor was I tickled about the rubbercement part. There is just something odd
about sitting in my car at the beach, gluing
down my hair before surfing. I thought
about it briefly, and then declined the hair
piece. She disassembled her work of "art"and I went on my "not-so-merry" way. On
the journey home, I began to realize there
might not be a solution for this problem. It
was a very scary realization.

Never Say Die
Iwas proof that the old adage, "hope
springs eternal", was alive and well.
Not long after the encounter with the
hairpiece from hell, my friend Mark, asked if
I'd be interested in going to Europe with him
for a year; we'd tour on bicycles the entire
time. It sounded like a great experience and
I agreed to it immediately, but that night I
began to wonder just how I was going to
keep my hair from falling out during that
twelve-month sabbatical. The answer came
in the form of a new shampoo called the
Helsinki Formula. Once again, I found thissupposedly amazing elixir, for hair regener
ation, via the ads on late night television. I
bought six-month's supply and stuffed my
33
8/6/2019 Women Like It Both Ways
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/women-like-it-both-ways 41/66
already heavily laden bike bags with the newmiracle formula. Imagine, riding a bicycle
sixty miles a day, several days in a row, with
an extra twenty pounds of shampoo; the sole
purpose of which was to keep your hair from
falling out. Nevertheless, I wasn't finishedwith my efforts quite yet. I'd heard that
excessive sweat could increase baldness. I
was sure that riding outside in the heat and
wind would make my hair weaken and fall
out faster. Rather ingeniously, I took a stan-
dard cycling cap and cut the top out of it to
keep my head from sweating. Then I put
tape on the sides of the front bill to prevent
my hair from blowing around. Luckily my
friend Mark had a good sense of humor
about all this and would just laugh at my
antics to save my hair. The trip lasted for six
34

months, but after about three months, I sentthe shampoo home. It wasn't doing a thing
and it was still too heavy to tote around
Europe. Perhaps I would give it another try
upon my return home.
Time did not diminish my need to dosomething about my hair. By age thirty, I
was thinking the unthinkable once again,
some sort of medical procedure. This time I
considered hair plugs, a rather curious way
of moving hair from one part of the head to
another. The procedure involves taking a
screwdriver-size plug of hair and transplant
ing it to the bald spot. The process was
expensive and time consuming, but none of
that bothered me. I was desperate now!
Fate intervened before I could take this
step. One day I found myself on a sales call
35

talking with a new client who obviously hadhair plugs in place. Once business was con-
cluded, I asked him about the procedure. He
shook his head immediately and said he was
not going to complete the process as it was
36

very painful. Mind you, he currently hadabout twenty very prominent plugs on the
front of his head that were absolutely impos-
sible to miss. There was no way you could
not see them; it was the first thing you
noticed about the guy.
He went on to explain that he'd never
felt such pain as he had after multiple sur-
geries. Once the anesthesia wore off he was
in serious pain. Some of the plugs did not
take, thus being a total loss. He was blunt
and to the point. He told me that if I started
the process there was no turning back, or I
would end up looking like him. I felt really
sorry for the guy and thanked him for hissound advice. I honestly believe he was sent
to keep me from making a bad decision.

Trying the Unthinkable
A
ll avenues were exhausted. I'd
spent countless years and stacks
of cash searching for the cure to
my problem. I finally admitted my hair wasgone for good. Once I allowed this reality to
encompass me, I thought of the motivational
tapes I'd listened to over the years. They all
had a common theme: "Do what you fear the
most and you will conquer your fear." I
feared going bald, feared it more than any-
thing else in this world. I acknowledged that
fear and decided to overcome it. One night,
before I went out on the town with myfriend, Larry, I shaved off all my remaining
hair. All of it! Yes, you read that right! I
shaved my head before going out on a Friday
39

night! There was no bald spot now, only mygleaming bare head.
Larry was a bit shocked, to say the least,
but he understood what I was trying to
accomplish. I was even more nervous than
before. Luckily the lights in the club weredim. After about an hour or so, and a couple
of drinks to fortify myself, I finally worked
up the courage to ask someone to dance.
Before I had the chance, a nice looking
woman asked me!!!
To be honest, I wasn't feeling very attrac-
tive that night. I was dying to go home
because I was sure I was one funny looking
guy. Of course I was the only bald guy in the
club. After two dances and a bit of small
talk, this lady and I left the dance floor. We
made it only about three feet when she

pinned me up against a wall and started kiss-ing me. I was stunned. When I asked her
why she was obviously so moved to kiss me,
she said she'd never kissed a bald guy before
and had always wanted to do so. Who was I
to deny her what she always wanted?

I was on the top of the world! She hadn'tfound me funny looking. She' d found me
sexy! Sexy enough to demand a kiss! I
returned the next evening. "Hey, can you
blame me?" Two other girls remembered
me from the night before. Suddenly I wasdifferent than all the rest of the men and in a
positive way. The guy who had spent all that
time trying to hide his bald spot was sudden-

There is Hope
Y
es, this book is about losing my
hair and all the trials I went
through to try to save it. But
there is a great deal more here as well, if
you're willing to confront yourself and be
honest. Ask yourself some hard questions
like: why hold onto what little hair you have
left? Why put on a hairpiece every day?
Why spend anywhere from $7,000 to
$20,000 dollars on hair restoration? Why
comb your hair from one side of your head
to the other in a futile attempt to cover the
obvious? The "why"is
simple - societydemands we have hair, but nature tells us
otherwise. There are both men and women
out there today shaving their heads and stat-

ing, both by example and by their words, that they will "not" be manipulated by
advertising that tells them they "have" to
have hair to fit into the mainstream. I can
tell you right now the hair care industry, a
billion dollar enterprise, does not want youto shave your head and take them out of the
shampoo, conditioner and hair restoration
business. Day and night, on the television,
you'll find ads for hair restoration. Twenty-
four hours a day, the message is sent. You'renobody without hair.
I suggest otherwise. I'm hoping you will
take a long hard look at just how easy it is to
trim your hair short and then shave it off all
in one night. Think about this for a minute, you didn't come into this world with the idea
of keeping your hair forever. The companies

that make money off you taught this attitudeto you, as they originally did to me. Then
the magazines and movies reinforced the
message - if you want to be a leading man,
hair is a requirement. Yet, I know things are
changing. What about you? Have you takenthe next step toward letting go of this learned
behavior and made the step toward being
who you really are? Only you can answer
that question.
I believe the answer is very simple.Shave your head!

"Because I grew up with two bald
grandpas, I always thought baldness was a special crown that
God gave men for working hard
and loving their families. I guess I
still believe that. It's a blessing,
not a curse."

Why Not?
Ihave been shaving my head for the
past twelve years and I've heard
every excuse a person could possibly
think of concerning why it will not work for
them. Some of the more common ones are:
- My wife won't let me.
- I'm too pale.
- Women won't like it.
- I have scars on my head.
- I don't have a nicely shaped head.
- I just can't do it.
All potentially valid reasons, but until
you try it, you'll never know.

day.

feeling.

Fear
S
ome motivational speakers define
fear as, false expectations appear-
ing real. I've spoken with hun-
dreds of men all over the world and I've
never heard anyone tell me they're afraid,
but they are. They think women will not be
attracted to them. That's the crux of it all,
that women will not find us attractive.Perhaps you are thinking, "What if I do this
and I don't look good?" If it doesn't work
for you, let it grow back! What have you
lost? If you try a medical procedure and
don't like it, you're stuck with it for the restof your life. Do you honestly believe you're
invisible that way? Over the years, I've
heard more comments about the toupee

some fellow is wearing, or his comical
efforts to comb his remaining hair over to
cover some bald area. Trust me, you're not
getting away with anything. People are talk-
ing about you and they may indeed be laugh-
ing.It is my hope you can dispel your fears.
Shave your head and give baldness a chance.
You could be part of a new male revolution
that accepts reality and says, "Don't save it,
shave it!" You can change the way societyviews you as a bald man. Set the standard
for a change, make your look, the look oth-
ers want to have. With millions of men
going bald each year, the numbers are in our
favor. All you have to do is lose your fear
and give it a shot.

Things to Look Forward To
ot having hair frees up a lot of
time, believe it or not. Hair
appointments are a thing of the
past unless you want to have your head
waxed and I only recommend that if you are
trying to get a date with your hair stylist.
There is no need for shampoo or condition
er. Youget ready to go out much faster, especially on the days you're not shaving. I usu
ally shave every other day. It only takes a
few extra minutes and I only use a razor and
a bar of soap. Your scalp is much tougher
than your face so shaving cream isn't needed. Think of all the time you've spent trying
to get your hair just right only to have it rain.
No more hair anxiety - it's always perfect.

Let the other guys spend all that time in frontof the mirror. You have better things to do
(like finding more of those attractive ladies
who LOVE bald guys) . When you're not
thinking about how your hair looks all the
time, it frees your mind for far more important thoughts. If you can give the "hair
committee" in your head a break, your
thoughts may turn toward endeavors that are
much more productive.
Other unexpected benefits abound. If you
are plagued with skin problems, they may
disappear as well. I have a hereditary case of
eczema, which would eventually flake into a
type of dandruff. I haven't had the problem
since I started shaving my head. You will
have a hairstyle that is always "in". It is its
own style. Bald men have been around for-

ever and always will be, even if the hair careindustry manages to create a solution that's
inexpensive with no side effects. From my
perspective, even if that solution is found, I
will still keep my head shaved and love it.
Have no doubt, it is a life-changing experience. Throughout your life you have cer
tain memorable moments, events you can
remember with crystal clarity. Shaving your
head is one of those moments. This is free
dom and you give it to yourself.

Thank You
If you've made it this far in the book
and are seriously contemplating the
move toward a bare head, then you're
confronting your fears and releasing thosechains that bind you. I wrote this book for
you. At the time I was facing this same
issue, as you are now, there were no books
available and no one to help me cope with
this loss. If someone gave you this book,
take the hint. Obviously he or she cares
enough about you to want to help. You can
choose to be unencumbered by hair woes,
and go back to feeling like yourself again.Take the final step, shave it off and begin
your new life!

"Having known Christopher since high school during his
'big hair' days, and now as my friend I call 'Ghandi', it was
fascinating to read what he went through to get to where he
is today. I t's a great reminder to us all that the most
important thing is what's in our heart, not on our head. I
guess we need to accept the fact that sometimes in the game
of life there are no comebacks in relation to your hair ."

find out he was better off without it.
