MENTAL ILLNESSES

The media can cause a variety of different mental illnesses that can seriously affect someone's life in both the short term and long term. People can develop depression, anxiety, anorexia, bulimia, etc. Depression: feelings of severe despondency and dejection.Anxiety: a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome.Anorexia: an emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat.Bulimia: an emotional disorder characterized by a distorted body image and an obsessive desire to lose weight, in which bouts of extreme overeating are followed by fasting or self-induced vomiting or purging.

Young girls are susceptible to mental illnesses influenced by the media because they are naive and vulnerable and they’re brought up surrounded by magazines, TV shows and films that show ‘perfect’ women.

SEXISM

The most common portrayal for women in the media is as sex objects to appeal to a male audience, this is seen in TV shows and films a lot. The majority of females in the media are over sexualised.
