Women Empowerment Cell of BMSIT&M

Vision: To empower women in all spheres of life enabling them to become agents of social and

economic change and inculcating ethical values for the betterment of self, family and

society.

Mission: To train women to acquire wide range of skills and knowledge. To develop and

increase their social, economic and intellectual capacities for peace, security and

prosperity of mankind.

An Inauguration followed by Talk on Role of Women in Changing the Society

Academic year 2013-14

A workshop on GIT software for girl students of BMSIT was organized on 31st Aug

2013. The training was imparted by Mr.Kaustav Das Modak, Partner and Lead

Developer at Code Binders Web Developemnt Services, LLP, Kolkata.

A two day workshop on “ reuse of plastic bottles “was conducted jointly by Women

Empowerment Cell along with EDA and BMSSA , on 21st and 22nd September 2013 to

bring an awareness on reuse of used plastic bottles among the educated unemployed

women from the villages situated around BMSIT. The event was formally inaugurated

by Chief Mentor, Dr. S. C. Sharma, Dr. S. Venkateshwaran Principal, BMSIT, and the

director of BMSSA, Mrs. Sapna Papu. Mr. Manjunath Bhutta , Architect and Product

Designer from BMSSA conducted the workshop. He stressed on waste management

and taught how to make Flower vases, stools, Flower pots, pen stands, wall hangings

etc from used plastic bottles. Around 20 women of Avalahalli and 20 students of

BMSIT benefitted from the workshop.

Workshop on reuse of plastic bottles

A “ Computer training Program” for women of Avalahalli was conducted from

7th November2013 to 5th December 2013.The Program was inaugurated by Dr.

Mariamma A Varghese,Ex-Vice-Chancellor of SNDT Women's University,

Mumbai, Senior EducationConsultant to NAAC. On this occasion, she delivered a

lecture on “Challenges for Women in Educational Leadership”. She was also

felicitated by the Centre for women Empowerment. Many ladies from Avalahalli

were benefitted from the program. They were taught basics, MS Word, MS

Excel, Power Point and also to use the internet. The staff of TCE, CS, IS and

MCA taught the trainees.

Inauguration of Computer Training Program

Academic year 2014-15

In collaboration with Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee, an awareness

program on“Women Safety in Workplace” was held on 6th September 2014.

The Program was steered by Ms. Florence David, INSA.

Self Defence Program on 24thApril 2015

A Self Defence Program for women was jointly organized by Women

Empowerment Cell and NSS unit of BMSIT on 24th April 2015. The program

started with an invocation song by Ms. Harshita, student of II sem Civil

Engineering department. Dr. R. V. Ranganath, Principal of BMSIT, welcomed

the gathering. He mentioned that in a country like ours, it is so pathetic that

because of few incidences, women have to learn to protect themselves now more

than ever. Prof. C S Mala, Chairperson Women Empowerment Cell of BMSIT,

briefed the audience about the various activities of the Cell. Some of the

outstanding activities like conducting free computer classes, workshops on reuse

of plastic bottles for rural women were highlighted. Dr. Ragini Narayan,

Educationist, Donor Trustee and Member Secretary, BMS Educational Trust,

Bengaluru called upon all the students to make the best of this opportunity

provided to them. Dr. Samitha Mithra, Chairperson, Women Empowerment Cell,

BMSCE, addressed the students on women safety.

The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. N Suresh, Chief Coordinator of NSS

unit of BMSIT. The self defence program was conducted by Sri S V Rajendra

from Karnataka Civil Defence Corps, Bengaluru and his team. The team

demonstrated many simple techniques and taught the students also. The program

was compered by Ms. Aparna, Asst. Prof in MCA department and member of the

cell.

Academic year 2016 – 17:

A Seminar on “Women Safety and challenges faced by women “on 24th

September 2016 was organized on 24th September 2016. Advocate Smt. Pramila

Nesargi was the speaker and she spoke about the social scenario regarding the

challenges faced by women and women safety measures .The seminar was

attended by the staff and students of all the departments

International Women’s day was celebrated on 10th March 2017 from 2.30pm to

4.15pm at TCE Seminar hall, BMSIT&M where all the women staff of

BMSIT&M gathered and actively took part in the events organized to socialize

the women staff of BMSIT&M. The session was chaired by Principal, Vice-

Principal and Heads of all the departments. Principal Dr. Mohan Babu G.N.

addressed the gathering on role played by women in daily life. This event gave a

platform for the women staff to exhibit their talent.

Academic year 2017 - 18:

A deliberation on “HEALTH, HYGIEN AND LEGAL ISSUES FOR WOMEN”

Women empowerment cell in collaboration with Internal Complaint

Committee of BMSIT&M conducted a deliberation on “Health Hygiene and Legal

Issues for Women” on 18th August 2017 at 1.00 pm. This program was arranged to

create awareness about issues of women. Around forty housekeeping staff, Ladies of

neighbour villages and faculty members of BMSIT&M attended the seminar.

The event started with an invocation song and followed by lighting of a lamp

by the dignitaries at main seminar hall. The welcome speech was delivered by dr. C S

Mala, Chief Coordinator, WEC. The key note address on women well being was

delivered by the Chief Guest Mrs. Satya. This was followed by a Presidential speech

by Dr. Annamma Abharam Vice Principal BMSIT&M.

The informative talk on “Health & Hygiene” was deliberated by Dr. Srinivas

from Vani Vilas hospital Bangalore. He discussed the problems faced by women right

from birth, childhood, marriage and pregnancy. He also created awareness among

them on various issues.

The talk on “Legal Issues” was discussed by Akhila vidyasandra. She

highlighted on various issues of women, which was very informative, interactive and

it enlightened the gathering with valuable information about the problems faced by

women. She also said that, when the women society of the country realize their full strengths

and be aware of their rights, then only women will have an equal status with men.

The event ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ambika R , Coordinator of

Internal Complaint Committee.

The staffs were welcomed with rose flower bouquet. Later various events

were conducted for ladies staff of all the departments. The events conducted were

balloon bursting, lemon in the spoon, musical chair and Tic Tac Toe.

Academic Year 2018-19

Women Empowerment Cell and National Service Scheme of BMSIT&M jointly

organized Women’s Day on 27th March 2019 to Commemorate International Women’s Day. A

talk was organized on this day on “Women’s Health Awareness”. Dr. Shyamala, from

Government Hospital, Yalahanka, Bengaluru spoke on Health Issues of Women, which covered

the women’s physical and mental health. Around 120 staff members, inclusive of teaching,

supporting, and House Keeping staff attended the program.

Dr. Shyamala from Govt. Hospital, Yalahanka, delivered a special talk focusing on self

examination for early detection of breast cancer, etc, with demonstration. She said that a good

food habit is the best key to control any health issues. She also gave some health tips. She also

touched upon menstrual cycles, menopause, hygiene, thyroid, cancer, vitamins and mineral

deficiencies.

The talk was followed by three games All the participants enjoyed the event. Prizes were

distributed for all the winners in the games.

As the program was on well-being of women health the participation was also there from

NSS coordinators. The Lunch was sponsored by NSS coordinator Dr. Suresh N, to all the

teaching, nonteaching and housekeeping women staff of BMSIT&M.

Dr. Annamma Abraham, Vice Principal, was present on the occasion. Dr. C. S. Mala,

Chief Coordinator WEC, addressed the gathering on the importance of women’s health.

The event was anchored by Prof. Chethana C, Dept.of CSE, welcomed by Prof.

Tejaswini, department of M E. Prof. Sowmyashree , Department of TCE, thanked the dignitaries

and all the participants.

Camus Talk on “Being Action Sheroes/ Heroes/ Theyroes # I Never Ask for It” is conducted

by Women Empowerment Cell, BMSIT&M on 6th March 2020, at 2:30 - 4:30 PM by an NEO

Blank Noise. The session started by welcoming the Chief Guest Jasmeen Patheja, Founder

Director Blank Noise by Dr. Usha B A, Chief coordinator, WEC Cell.

The session gave brief sight on street harassments and different activities conducted by Blank

Noise to strengthen the women. Also shared efforts of Action Sheroes / Heroes/ Theyroes in

confronting fear, building safe spaces and taking agency in ending sexual and gender based

violence.

Blank Noise was initiated in 2003 in a climate where street harassment was perceived as a non-

issue in India and globally. Over the 16 years, Blank Noise has mobilised thousands of citizens

across geographies to take agency in addressing sexual violence by becoming Action Sheroes,

Heroes, Theyroes. They are drawn by a shared desire to shift the climate of denial and silence

surrounding street harassment and sexual assault, and the wish to create safe spaces for survivors

of violence to speak, be heard and heal. The session was very informative and got positive

feedback form the participants.
