Principal’s Report

What’s happening with the BER? Yes, we are still waiting for the 3-6 toilets to be

completed …. Some good news, though, is that we are getting quotes to restore and

repaint our “Blue Building”. As a feature of our school, we want it to look as beautiful on

the outside as it does on the inside. Let the ladies in the Office know if you would like

some agapanthus for your garden- the garden at the back of the Blue Building will be

cleared to allow for air flow and to help reduce moisture build up.

Morning Assembly is an important communication time for students and

staff- they all need to be listening. We ask that the parents attending

Morning Assembly show respect and appreciation during this time by

being active listeners and not trying to talk to the teachers, children or each other.

This is our Values Owl. Our Values Owl is used as a tool for focus and reflection, for ‘looking over’ situations for a bird’s eye view of what Values are being used during teaching/learning. Reflection is thinking about and making sense of experience and possibilities. Teaching students to reflect ensures that they are learning from their experience, and making connections between their new understandings and their existing knowledge. “It’s about listening to people around us and showing respect and appreciation for them. It’s also about giving each person the opportunity to participate in their own way. It is about learning as a community.”

Our Canteen reopens tomorrow. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen. Each year our school participates in the Alstonville ANZAC March and competitions organised by the Alstonville RS Sub-Branch. This year, the children who have a relative/relatives who have given their life serving our country will be invited to lay a poppy on the Memorial in their honour. Can you please let us know if this relates to you and your family- just call, email or write a note to let us know. What a moving way to honour our heroes.

We are having terrible trouble with vandalism at the moment. A gang of youths is regularly seen on the grounds and they, or perpetrators like them, have been targeting the children’s work (burning, defacing and destroying), teacher’s cars and our buildings. It is distressing for everyone and important that we have a community response to this issue. All schools are covered by the

Enclosed Lands Act, which means that it is against the law to enter our grounds without my permission. If you see anyone, and in particular groups of young people, on our grounds please call the NSW DET School Security Hotline to make a report, and then the police. Retraction- Maroon Fundraiser

Last week’s newsletter advertised that we raised $495.00 (a typographical error made by me) for our Maroon Day

Fundraiser. I would like to correct this figure to $375.75 which is still a wonderful effort from our caring

community.

Boys Knock Out Cricket

After the weather patterns of the past couple of weeks, the rain stayed away at the Boys

Knockout Cricket. On Thursday the boy’s cricket team played Lismore Heights Public School

in the first round of the competition. The boys won the toss and elected to field. Lewis and

Kyle opened the bowling, both gaining early wickets. All of the boys had a chance to bowl.

Kyle displayed some fantastic bowling, gaining 3 wickets. Jordan was a handy bowler,

bowling out one batter and gaining four wickets from great catches. Wickets were gained by

Lewis, Kyle, Jordan and Lachlan. There were some brilliant catches taken by Jackson, Lewis, Kyle, Jordan and

Matthew. There were some great fielding displays and the boys made some strong throws at the stumps. Matthew

showed some great wicket keeping skills, keeping the ball alive at all times. The boys completed the 25 overs with

Lismore Heights gaining 18 runs. Lewis and Matthew started off the line up with some incredible batting. They

scored the runs and won the game in three overs. We continued to have fun with the other team, allowing all of

our team to have a bat and all of their team to have a go at bowling. The boys were very positive on the day and

worked together as a team. The next game will take place in the coming weeks. The boys will play Wyrallah Road

Public School. Well done boys on a fabulous game!

Thank you to all of the parents who came and supported the team on the day. The team appreciated the help from

the families who provided transport to and from the event.

There have been many sporting trials on over the last couple of weeks. Our students have done well, with many

being selected to go onto the next level. They have all commented how much fun they are having! It’s great to see

active students enjoying themselves.

Cricket Trials

Lewis McNally and Matt Job participated in the FNC Zone cricket trials at Brunswick Heads. Both

boys were then selected to go to the North Coast trials at Sawtell on Sunday and Monday.

All the best boys!

Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to the students who competed at the District Swimming Carnival in Ballina.

Seven students made it through to the next level, FNC Zone Carnival, which was held at

Murwillumbah last week. These included: Matt Job, Jasper Mulcahy, Olivia Kerry, Maddyson

Lloyd, Tom Donatsch and the Senior Boys Relay team (Matt, Jasper, Lewis McNally and Rhys

Redman-Challinor) Matt Job was our only competitor to make it through to the North Coast

Carnival which will be held at Banora Point next week. Good luck, Matt!

Tennis Trials

Kyle Yager and Scott Fleming competing at Alstonville on Monday in the District Tennis Trials. Kyle was

selected in the team, with Scott being reserve.

Well done, Kyle and Scott. Kyle now travels to Mullumbimby for the FNC Trials next week.

Leadership in Sport Program

Twelve of our Year 5/6 students have been selected to participate in the Leadership in Sport Program. This program

involves students from Years 5-8 from our local community. The student leaders learn basic skills in a variety of

sports through to the skills of refereeing. They then return to their schools and help teachers by organising

equipment, running tabloids and refereeing younger students.

Our students involved are: Sarah Alcorn, Molly Hughes, Emily Parmenter, Lewis McNally, Cooper Walls, Jasper

Mulcahy, Jordan McNally, Kyle Yager, Jarrod Sherlock, Olivia Kerry, Lauren Boss, and Casey Kershaw. Have a great

day on Monday!

CHANGE OF DETAILS NOTIFICATION

It is once again that time of year where we need our parents and carers to update their telephone contact

numbers and also to ensure that any emergency contact details we have for your children are current.

With the onset of the cooler weather we are asking that you check the expiry date of any asthma inhalers and

supply the school with a current asthma management plan.

If your child has developed any recent allergies or medical conditions that the school is unaware of please

update these details as well.

Thankyou,

Front Office

Coles Sports for Schools Update Well done Wollongbar! Together we raised a total of 44 790 points. Miss Allen and the PDHPE team had lots of fun doing some online shopping at the beginning of February 2011. It shouldn’t be too long until we receive our order and can start using the new equipment in the playground and during sport and gross motor activities.
