INSIDE THIS ISSUE SD COUNTY OFFICE OF ED MESSAGE
May 2010 Dear Senior Parents,
As the school year comes to a close, your children will soon be celebrating prom and graduation. These are milestones in a teen's high school career.
As the San Diego County Office of Education Friday Night Live Coordinator, I join you in wishing these events will become joyous memories for your teens and for your family.
Out of concern for drinking and driving, many parents might be inclined to rent a limousine ("party bus"), and hotel rooms. These scenarios have led to negative consequences.
As a service to students and their families, the San Diego County Friday Night Live Partnership has joined other Prevention Programs to provide resources for parents about this important topic.
Please see the “Live 2 Graduate” flyer, "What Parents Should Know Before Rent-ing a Limo" on page 4 of this newsletter. And for more information on the “Live 2 Graduate” campaign, log on to www.live2graduate.com. Eric Maserang San Diego County Office of Education Friday Night Live Coordinator

On Wednesday evening, May 26th, the
Grossmont Union High School District presented
A driver safety education class designed to keep new
drivers safe on the road. About 120 people showed up for
the informative, and sometimes riveting program.
To learn how you can attend with your new or future
licensed driver, age 15-19 years old, please contact the
California Highway Patrol at 619-220-5492.
SANTEE CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO ADOPT COUNTY’S NEW 10 PM CURFEW
In keeping with last month’s new law requiring minors (under 18) in the unincorporated areas of San Diego County
to be home between the hours of 10pm and 5am, the Santee City Council voted recently to make Santee’s curfew law consistent with the county’s. Santee Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris
May said the change will help eliminate confusion.
The change will need to be ratified at the next meeting, but the law is on track to take effect in mid-June.

Summer School There will be one session of summer school held from June 28 to July 16 from 7:30am to 12:30pm. Stu-dents who do not pass a class will not have the opportunity to retake the same class during the regular school year. They will need to attend summer school for make up. Check with your student’s counselor for more information.
Parent Portal We continue to be the #1 school in the district in parent portal use. Please contact the VP office or the Counseling office for your ID and Password to log on. Important information includes transcript and atten-dance.
Attendance and Behavior
As we move toward the end of the year, students may be tempted to relax in anticipation of summer. Please emphasize to your student that the academic year continues until finals are completed and that the expectations for student behavior remain consistent throughout the year. Students who have excessive tar-dies and truancies will be placed on LOP (Loss of Privilege) which will affect prom attendance and the date they receive their yearbook.
Programming and Registration
Selection of classes for the fall has been completed and we are building the master schedule for next year. Changes in classes cannot be considered once the schedule is built. If you have concerns over the courses you and your student have selected, contact your student’s counselor immediately. It is very important to note that most 9th and 10th grade students will be programmed periods 2 through 7.
If you have not returned your registration packet please do so as soon as possible. Your student will have the last selection of electives if the registration packet is not turned in. If you know that your 9th through 11th grade student will not be attending West Hills next fall, please contact the Counseling Secretary at 956-0439.
Dress Code
Please carefully read the dress code in the student handbook as the dress code is being revised for the fall and will be updated before the end of the school year. The dress code is subject to change at any time and changes will soon be reflected on the website document.
Star Testing
Star testing concluded on Friday, May 22. Thank you to all parents for adjusting to the schedule change and helping your students arrive to school on time. We are now resuming our regular schedule with Collabora-tion day each Monday

VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS NEWS
Congratulations to the students of Mr. Lorentz’s
advanced guitar and string orchestra
classes, who both earned superior ratings during their recent Carnival sail-tour. Students performed for cruise line guests aboard the Carnival Elation April 19th through 23rd.
WHHS student musicians attended a clinic with none other than Andy King, orchestra director at Purdue University. King adjudicated and worked with both the guitar and the string orchestra groups. King's own university groups have performed at Carnegie Hall and have also toured in Russia.
According to Mr. Lorentz, it was a wonderful experience for all.

Thank you WHHS PTSA volunteers! PTSA volunteers have put in literally hundreds of hours during the past month and I want to thank each of you for your contribution. Most recently was our Staff Appreciation Week. Through your generous donations, we were able to provide 5 days worth of treats for the 145+ staff members at WHHS, including a $5 gift card for each staff member, snacks, fruit or bagels each morning, and an Italian lunch on Wednesday. Thank you to Pat & Oscars for the free breadsticks and Einstein's for the free bagels for our staff. They were all very appreciative and the PTSA board was proud to be able to say that the love was from literally HUNDREDS of parents who brought in do-nations and baked goodies on their behalf. In addition to that week, volunteers have spent countless hours stuffing registration packets for next year, accepting registration packets for next year and then separating those packets back out so that we can be ready for the 2010-2011 school year. Volunteers helped with the Pride of the Pack picnic as well. Thank you to all - there will be more opportunities for those who would like to volunteer more in the future!
