I just want to be a sheep.” I love this cute little children’s song—and children love it even more than this 64-year-old kid! (If you don’t know it, check out the video on YouTube.) But this Sunday’s scripture readings about sheep and shepherds caused me to reflect on the question, “Do I really want to be a sheep?” In the midst of our hectic and often challenging lives, being a wooly white sheep skipping through lush mountain meadows, munching on green grass and sipping from cool streams can sound pretty attractive. And yet when Jesus looked at the vast crowd and likened them to sheep, “his heart was moved with pity for them” (Mk 6:34). Do I really want to be a sheep? Sheep are natural followers—and without a shepherd, the whole flock will follow each other into the sharp brambles, off of a steep cliff or into a predator’s lair. Hence, Jesus pitied the vast crowd “who were like sheep without a shepherd” (Mk 6:34). Following a wayward, corrupt shepherd can be equally disastrous for the dull, unwary sheep, as revealed by the prophet Jeremiah: “Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture, says the Lord” (Jer 23:1). If we really want to be sheep, each of us must carefully choose a shepherd to follow—one who gives us repose in verdant pastures, who leads us beside restful waters, who refreshes our soul and guides us in right paths. Unlike sheep, each of us has been blessed with free will, and we choose our shepherd based on our perceptions of verdant pastures, restful waters, refreshment and right paths—of what makes us happy. As Fr. Andrzej wrote in last week’s bulletin, “Whether we have ‘much’ or ‘little,’ enough or are still missing something is a matter of perspective. A lot depends on our outlook on life and on what matters to us.” In other words, we choose our shepherd by what we value and what gives meaning to our lives. Consequently, the ultimate question we sheep must each answer is “What is the meaning of life?” Have you taken the time to reflect on the meaning of your life? Have you contemplated what or who gives purpose to your life? In the midst of our hectic and often challenging lives, you and I seldom address—and tend to avoid—the ultimate question that motivates and governs our choice of a shepherd. What is the meaning of life? This question is the first in the seven-week Discovering Christ course that will be offered at OLBH on Sunday evenings starting September 30 at 5:30PM. I invite you to prayerfully consider participating in this course in which you will have the opportunity to discuss the deeper questions of life in Christ: Why does Jesus matter? What does Jesus want us to know? Why do we need a Savior? Why is the Resurrection important? Who is the Holy Spirit? Why do we need the Church? If you really want to be a sheep, come join the flock and discover the Good Shepherd who gathers the remnant from all the lands, who offers peace to those far and near—who gives purpose and meaning to life. Keep the Faith! Deacon John

“I just want to be a sheep, bah, bah, bah, bah… I pray the Lord my soul to keep!

Why does God have rules? God has rules to protect us and help us. God also has rules to help us grow and become all that he wants us to be. Think of feeding a baby, the baby may not like the food,

but we know that he needs it to be healthy and to grow. Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. (Galatians 3:23-24)

HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND THE STURGIS RALLY Did you know that in the US the three largest human trafficking events in the nation are the Super Bowl, the US Open Golf Tournament and the Sturgis Rally? According to Becky Rasmussen with calltofreedom.org, South Dakota has more conviction of human trafficking than any other state. St. Josephine Bakhita is considered to be one of the Patron Saints for victims of slavery and human trafficking. Please consider praying for St. Josephine Bakhita’s intercession, particularly leading up to the Rally.
