LEAD LIKE A WOMAN

A popular advertisement tried to answer the question

“What does it mean to do something like a

woman?” by asking subjects to demonstrate running,

fighting, and throwing “like a woman.” The individuals put

on a weak performance, but when women were given the

same instructions, they ran, threw, and fought as hard

as they could. Then the advertisement asked, “When did

doing something ‘like a woman’ become an insult?”

LEAD LIKE A WOMAN

S tudies have shown that close to 52

percent of professional jobs are held by

women. However, women are substantially

underrepresented in leadership roles. Only

14.6 percent of executive

officers, 8.1 percent of

top earners, and 4.6

percent of Fortune 500

CEOs are women. At this

rate, it’s estimated that

women won’t achieve lead-

ership equivalence until 2085.

When women adopt leadership roles, they

provide a unique set of skills, ideas, and

female leaders? The best way is by creating a

supportive environment that actively

empowers women to lead by: life experiences

that can potentially broaden the entire

company’s strategies, and bottom line. On

average, Fortune 500 companies with more

female represented on

their board of Directors

achieved a significantly

higher financial perfor-

mance than those with

fewer female representa-

tions. So how can busi-

nesses, especially those

led by women recruit and nurture talent?

Encourage mentorship and collaboration

Encourage everyone to speak up

Create an atmosphere that nurtures family life

WITH THE PRESIDENT

I 'm extremely excited that Women of Colors has started our newsletter publication to

be distributed quarterly. We will share current events, educational tips, and what

WOC is doing to make a difference in the community. For over 23 years, we have

sustained and have grown stronger to have several youth programs at the Learn to Earn Acade-

my. We hope that you recognize by now that WOC members and volunteers care deeply about

the community. If you are looking for a place to meet new people, get involved, and to share

your ideas, consider Women of Colors. You are welcome to attend our meetings which are held

the first Thursday of each month at Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church located at 612 Millard

Street downtown. For more information about us, view our website womenofcolors.org or con-

tact us by calling (989) 737-9286 or (989) 399-2887 Ext. 5.

SOCIETY PROBLEMS ARE BETTER SOLVED THROUGH COMMUNITY EFFORTS

WOC COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT

TECHNOLOGY

Ever thought about just how dirty your phone

is? No really, think about it. Now that you're

fully grossed out, check out the PhoneSoap

Charger ($60). It's a small case that charges

and sanitizes your

phone all at once.

Win!

Did you know that kids who spend time outdoors do better in school?

Studies show that kids who spend more time

outdoors show improved tension span, less

anxiety, better overall fitness and higher

overall test scores. Yes, all that from playing

OUTSIDE!

This is just one more reason why WOC is

taking the kids outdoors this summer. What

better place for a child to grow and create

lifelong memories than in a community

garden.

Gardening with children not only provides

the benefits of exercise and fresh food, it

also fosters communication, builds strong

relationships, and offers opportunities

towards common goals.

This community garden project will be done

in collaboration with SVRC, with the help of

Lowe’s Home Improvement Store, Abeles

Greenhouse and community members.
