W.O. LIONS MTG. W.O. LIONS MTG. W.O. LIONS MTG.
Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,
October is a time to enjoy the best of autumn, apples and pumpkin pies, fresh
cider, the gorgeous display of fall foliage, the cool evenings and warm days, and
brisk walks through the park or in your neighborhood.
October is also a time to enjoy the fellowship of other Lions. The Glassport Lions
50th Annual Rigatoni Night will be held on Tuesday October 11th at the Queen of
the Rosary Parish, 530 Michigan Ave. Glassport 15045 is always a great event to
meet old and new friends in Lionism. If you have never been to the Rigatoni Night
come and enjoy an evening of Fun and Fellowship and celebrate with the
Glassport Lions 50 years of this event.
This event is a great way to recruit potential new members, or show a new member
that Lions are not all about work. The best part of Lionism is the friend that we
make for life not only in our own club, but throughout the District, State and the
International.
If your club is having an event coming up please get the information to the
Cauldron editor PDG Harold Fletcher by the 25th of the month so the Lions of the
District can come and support it.
Remember as Lions if we work together, we will achieve together, and (in
October) we can celebrate together at the Glassport Lions 50th Annual Rigatoni
Night.
Yours in Lionism,
DG Rich

FIRST VICE DISTRICT
GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE... PDG Geoff Temple
Fellow Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14B,
This month’s topic following my theme of it matters is membership or more
specifically club membership. The members are the backbone of a club and
without members the club would not exist. However, in our district, as is the
case throughout Lionism and especially Lionism in North America membership
has been steadily declining over the last several decades. There are several
reasons that have been given for this decline such as people are no longer
interested in joining organizations of any type, parents are more focused on the
raising of their children and don’t have the time, employers no longer encourage
their employees to be involved in their communities, and the list goes on and
on.
I truly believed that increasing club membership was a near impossible task
until I met PDG Ronnie Martin, a new club development consultant. PDG
Ronnie is a Lion volunteer from Texas who travels the country working with
districts by starting new clubs and increasing membership in existing clubs that
are struggling with membership. He came to Pittsburgh at the end of August
and held a workshop where he outlined his program for increasing membership.
The following morning Lions Dan Hupp, Barbara Rebovich, and I accompanied
him to the Borough of Bridgeville with a mission to start a new club. To be
honest I was bit skeptical.
Our first stop was the Police station where we talked to the chief. He gave us
about ten minutes of his time and sounded very interested. Our next stop was
the Borough Manager’s office. After a few minutes of telling her what the Lions
were and what we do she filled out an application and paid her initiation fee.
We made several other stops to local businesses and signed up a few more new
Lions. Since then Lion Dan has worked very hard on following up on the leads.
He is very close to having the required 20 new members to charter a club and
will most likely have the required amount by the time this article is published.
Lion Ronnie and a group went to the Bloomfield area later in the week where
they were able to recruit new members for the Bloomfield –Lawrenceville Lions
Club.
The take-away I got from this experience is that there are all kinds of people out
there who are interested in serving their communities. So we as Lions need to
get out there and tell our story. We have 100 years of success and there is no
reason why we can’t have another 100 years. If you need help with recruiting
ideas please contact GMT John Aiken
.
The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of
each individual… Vince Lombardi

SECOND VICE DISTRICT
GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE... Lion Kirby Marchand
Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,
Have you lost your enthusiasm for being a Lion? Do you rarely, or never attend
meetings? Have you quit, or cut back on helping out during fund-raisers or service
projects? Or, are you the chairman of a fund-raisers or service project and just find
that it is a chore to get the work done? Maybe you have been the secretary or
treasurer for years and are tired of the tedium! Don’t think that you are alone! It’s
a cliché, but I’ve been there, done that.
I’m sure that your reasons for becoming a Lion are still valid and deep in your
heart you wish that you still had that feeling of enthusiasm that you had when you
first became a Lion. Don’t let your lack of enthusiasm drive you from being an
active Lion.
What you need, is a change. You need to get more involved, not less. Get on a
different committee, not the same old one. Start a new fund-raiser or service
project. Tell your club that you want to do something different and this is the last
year that you will be the secretary or treasurer; Someone else will come forward.
they probably have wanted to do something different for a while, too, but thought
you would never give up the coveted job. Visit other Lions Clubs, especially while
on vacation. Try attending some District functions like the Fall Rally or Spring
Party, or maybe even a State or International Convention. Another good one is
Lions Appreciation Day at Beacon Lodge. One thing is for sure, you’ll make
friends with some of the best and nicest people you will ever meet!
Whatever you do, don’t let your current lack of enthusiasm drive you away from
being a Lion. That is the worst thing that you could do.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
PDG Thomas L. (Tom) Gregg, Chairperson 1130 Willowbrook Road Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania 15012-3202 [email protected] Dear District Governor, I am PDG Tom Gregg of District 14-E. I am the Host Committee Chairperson for the 2017 Pennsylvania Lions State Convention in May of 2017. In addition, I am treasurer of the Pennsylvania Counsellors Association, the Multiple District’s Past District Governors. As part of the Centennial Convention we are planning several service projects, based on the four pillars of service from Lions International, on Saturday afternoon. The main service project will be assembling high calorie food pouches for 30,000 individuals. The group we are working with is called Stop Hunger Now (www.stophungernow.org). This will make a huge impact on feeding many people worldwide. This project will be a joint project of the Pennsylvania Counsellors Association and the Host Committee. It is the intention, of the PA Counsellors Association (Pennsylvania) to continue this project, perhaps not at this scale, at a Council Meeting each year. The Past District Governor’s chairperson and liaison to our Host Committee is District Governor Larry Edwards of District 14-L. The total cost of the project $10,600. In order to hold this service project, we are asking for a donation of $15 US dollars from each of your clubs. That is per club and not per member. As this is a service project Activities funds may and should be used. If possible, we would appreciate it if the clubs would send the donation to your district and the district issue 1 check made out to Pennsylvania Counsellors Association. If a club wishes to make a larger donation, all excess funds over and above what is needed for the Convention Service Project, will be used to fund the ongoing project sponsored by the Past District Governors Association. Checks may be sent to me at the above address or you could give me the check at the November Council Meetings. A list of the clubs or individuals and the amounts they donated would be greatly appreciated. They will be recognized in the Convention Book. Where There’s A Need, There’s A Lion. We will be Celebrating Our Centennial By Making A Difference Everyday. Please help to feed the needy by encouraging your clubs to donate to this project. Please allow me to thank you and the Lions, Lioness and LEO’s of your district for their outstanding service to those in need. Yours in Lionism,
Thomas L. “Tom” Gregg, PDG 2017 Pennsylvania MD 14 State Convention Host Committee Chairperson

On Sunday September 11th, the Oakmont Lions partnered with the Oakmont Library to sponsor a “Touch the Truck” day on
the main street in Oakmont. Bulldozers, fire engines, an ambulance, dump trucks, a cement truck and even the street sweeper
attended and the children were given an opportunity to see the big rigs up close and even climb on and explore the vehicles.
The day was a huge success and proceeds from the event benefit the Oakmont Lions and the Oakmont Library. Shown in
the picture on the left are Alan Yeakley, Oakmont Lions President, Robin Almendinger-Oakmont Library; Deb Oray-

Recently, the Father of a former member of the Pittsburgh Hilltop Lions Club died. The member has been profoundly
handicapped since birth but able to attend meetings until a few years ago. He lives in Sewickley, PA. His Father lived in
Johnstown, PA and would be buried there. Paul had no means of paying for transportation and Access does not transport
across county lines, so his attendance at the Funeral seemed impossible. Private vehicles do not have the capacity to transport
the electric wheelchair that Paul uses so that means of travel was not an option. The Club voted for and passed unanimously
the disbursement of funds to pay for the rental of a handicapped van. Treasurer Joe Setticase drove the van, his wife Marlene
and Past President Kevin Gaughan also attended the funeral. Paul’s attendance at the funeral was assured and his final
respects paid to his Father. In this manner, the Lions showed once again their gift of compassion and generosity.

The Mon River Fleet Lions (MRF) held its monthly meeting
on August 19, 2016 at the Kane Regional Center in
McKeesport. Past International Director Cindy Gregg
addressed the group, commending the dynamic leadership and
the ambitious membership that have yielded unprecedented
growth and service to local communities. She also presented
Club President Michele Matuch with a Leadership Medal in
recognition of her stellar service to the MRF Lions Club and to
the communities served.
The occasion also marked the last meeting
for MRF Lion Brigadier General (Briggs),
a guide dog in training from the Gallant
Hearts Guide Dog Center in Mississippi.
Lion Briggs and his trainer Lion Caroline
Miller were sponsored for Club
membership a year ago by Lion Tom
Maglicco. Lion Miller spoke to the group
and recalled some of the highlights of his
tenure with our Club, especially our White
Cane Days where Briggs was a crowd
favorite. Briggs will return to Mississippi
for further training and will transfer his
Lion membership to a club there. Once
training is completed, Briggs will be
placed in a home where he can provide
needed assistance to a blind person.
Briggs will be missed.
On a brighter note, Lion Miller informed us that
Gallant Hearts has chosen TWO new puppies in
training and approved the names “Mon” and
“River.” We all look forward to them arriving in
the near future and adding to our Club’s outreach.
The meeting also included updates on future
fundraisers including a White Cane Day at Sam’s

River attending), a Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast
and Kids Corner at Renzie Park in McKeesport on
November 12, a Holiday Gift Card Framing raffle

Application Form
Purpose: Regional Lions Leadership Institute focuses on building the skills of Lions members for leadership
opportunities at the club and district level, including club president, zone chairperson, as well as other positions.
Thanks to partial funding through Lions Clubs International and the Lions of Pennsylvania we have been able to
keep the fee at $150.00 per participant. Your own district may also have leadership training monies available in
their budget that you can apply for to supplement this as well. Please contact your District Governor or District
Global Leadership Coordinator. Your fee includes training, accommodations and meals. As space is limited to
34 lions, each district can have only two participants, so get your applications in early.

Back in 1983, I had requested copies of the clubs that with their charter dates and the individual in District Operations at
Lions International was kind enough to send me copies of the index cards that were used when clubs were being formed. I
received 10 legal sized pages (printed on front and back), with each page containing copies of six clubs. Out of the sixty
clubs I have “cards” for, only 27 of those clubs are still in existence today. I had the opportunity to visit all 60 of those
clubs and how heart-breaking it is to reflect back on all those clubs that are no longer around. I’m passing some of them
on to you in this and future issues. I hope you enjoy looking at these cards over the next several months. PDG Harold Fletcher
