Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,
As president of your club, has your club accomplished the goals that were set out to accomplish
back in July and August of 2015? You still have time to meet those goals in April, May and
June! During my visits to the clubs in 14B, I could see that all the clubs were full of enthusiasm,
not only with their commitment to increase membership, but also with their fundraisers to
continue supporting the various organizations they have donated to over the years.
I received an email recently from our International 1st Vice President Robert E. Corlew. He has
issued a challenge to all District Governors (world-wide) to charter a new club by the end of this
Lion year. I feel confident that we can do it, maybe with another campus club that our 1st Vice District
Governor is hoping to pursue during his year. There has been talk for a couple years about approaching Robert Morris...
all we need is for our District membership Chairman to put together a “team” to make the necessary contacts. Let's see if
we can meet his challenge.
On May 6th the Lions of 14B and 14E along with the McKeesport Hospital Foundation are having an auction for diabetes.
All proceeds go into the Diabetes Relief Fund at the Foundation for individuals who cannot afford their medications. I am
asking that all the clubs in both districts to consider making a donation for this great cause. The Lions Diabetes Center
was founded in 1993 by the Lions of Region 2 and eventually expanded to include all the clubs in 14B. Later on, District
14E adopted the cause and now it’s a joint venture of the two districts. The Lions Magazine published by Lions
International has spotlighted the Diabetes Center on three different occasions.
April 29th is fast approaching for the Annual Spring Party (see attached flier on page 5 for details). Our guest speaker will
be PID Wayne Davis of Virginia. I’m hoping that we have a great crowd to welcome him to Pennsylvania. Please ask
your members to attend and to bring with them your club banner. It would be an awesome sight to see a “sea of banners!”
Also, please encourage any veterans from your club to attend.
Please make sure that your P101’s are sent into LCI so that 1st VDG Brandon can start working on the District Directory
for 2016-2017. If you don’t have a PU101 or cannot download one from the MyLCI website, see pages 24 and 25 of this
newsletter.
And as always, continue to believe that you can build your “Pride” by asking just one and continue to serve with
DIGNITY, HARMONY and HUMANITY.
Yours in Lionism,
DG Joe

FROM THE DESK OF 1ST
VICE DISTRICT
GOVERNOR BRANDON...
Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,
Communication is one of the key components in keeping an organization going.
If the left hand doesn’t know what the right is doing then there will be a problem. I feel
like there is a disconnect within the Lions Clubs not just in 14-B, but in International
overall. While I can’t solve problems on an international level I can give it the old college
try within this district. The clubs don’t know what the cabinet is doing and I have a pretty good
feeling that the cabinet doesn’t know what a lot of the clubs are truly up to either.
Tying into that, a goal of mine is to make the cabinet a little more transparent to people and vice versa.
I want to know what people are up to and I feel they should know what our plans are as well. In the next few
weeks I would like to create a YouTube channel that would inform everybody and keep them up to date on the
following: what goals I am trying to accomplish, where I will be, who I have spoken to, what is going on at the
cabinet level, and just general overall updates within the clubs.
Zone meetings occur regularly, and can be used as a good way to stay up to date on what is going on
within your zone and your closest neighbor clubs. If you have never attended a zone meeting, I highly
recommend it, if for no other reason than to meet some of your fellow Lions.
There doesn’t need to be such a disconnect within this organization. I honestly do not feel as if it is
intentional, but this is just what it has become. We all have the same goal, to serve. Some clubs just may have a
better handle on it than others. Some may host a fundraiser that would work really well for your club, but
without communication about the event, you would never know to give it a try.
On that note I would like to give everybody an assignment for this month. I want one representative
from each club to submit to me a list of fundraisers or community projects that your club hosts or participates in
and the dates that you do them. I plan to create a master list so everybody can see what goes on and when
throughout 14-B. This way fellow Lions from other clubs may want to attend your fundraiser or push their own
club to add a project they have seen somewhere else. When fellow Lions support one another and attend each
other’s events, we all win. The charities we support all win. Isn’t this what Lionism is all about? Email the lists
to [email protected]. The sooner I get your ideas in, the sooner they can be posted.
Yours in Lionism,
Lion Dr. Brandon Smith

In 1921, James Biggs, a photographer from Bristol, England, became blind
following an accident. Because he was feeling uncomfortable with the amount of
traffic around his home, he painted his walking stick white to be more easily
visible.
In 1930, Lion George A. Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club (Illinois)
introduced the idea of using the white cane with a red band as a means of
assisting the blind in independent mobility. The Peoria Lions approved the idea,
white canes were made and distributed, and the Peoria City Council adopted an
ordinance giving the bearers the right-of-way to cross the street. News of the
club’s activity spread quickly to other Lions clubs throughout the United States,
and their visually handicapped friends experimented with the white canes.
Overwhelming acceptance of the white cane idea by the blind and sighted alike quickly gave cane users a
unique method of identifying their special need for travel consideration among their sighted counterparts.
The president of the United States annually recognizes White Cane Day by the
Blind Americans Equality Day Proclamation on October 15th to acknowledge the
abilities of people who are blind and to promote equal opportunities as any other
American.
The mission of White Cane Day is to educate the world about blindness and how
the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving
back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by
blind people in a sighted world and to honor the many contributions being made
by the blind and visually impaired.
HISTORY OF THE WHITE CANE
District Governor Joe Donkin presenting West Mifflin Lion
Joe Parkinson with his 30 year Chevron and membership
letter of achievement. This was presented at the January
dinner meeting.
Good news! We received enough donations to
have 630,000 bags mailed out. International Paper
donated 500,000 bags for us in Western PA and an
additional 130,000 donated from local donors.
HELP! VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED!!
There should be close to a million pounds of food
collected. We could use help in a number of ways
from in a larger post offices, cooking hot dogs and
having water and soda for volunteers (a good way
to meet a large group of people for new member
recruitment); going with carriers to help collect
bags of food on their routes; or being at the food
pantry and/or at the post office unloading food
collected from homes. It can be all day or part of a
day anything you can do will be greatly
appreciated! For additional information, call Chuck
Jarrell, Food Drive Coordinator @ 412-818-1473.

I think that every Lions is familiar with such Lion’s projects as Beacon Lodge and Leader Dogs
for the Blind. However, there are other projects that our district supports. One of these projects
is the Western Pennsylvania Lions Hearing Foundation. Its mission is to provide assistance for
adults and children through the purchase of audiology devices that will improve the hearing of
those who are hearing impaired.
The foundation’s boards consist of two Lions Club members from each of the six districts in
Western Pennsylvania, plus members at large and a medical director. Lion Barb Rebovich and I
are the two board members from District 14B. PID Carl Battistone serves as an emeritus
member. We work hand in hand with the audiologists at UPMC Eye and Ear Institute.
Over the years the WPLHF has provided funds for Electro-larynx devices, cochlear implants and other specialized
audiology equipment. We also provided teaching grants in the field of otolaryngologists. The current mission of the
foundation is to purchase auditory devices especially hearing aids for adults and children with significant hearing
impairment who would benefit from this technology and have demonstrated a financial need.
Unfortunately, our only financial support is through contributions. Approximately 80 % of the hearing aids that are
distributed are to residents of Allegheny County. Therefore, support from the Lions Clubs in District 14B is vital in order
for this program to continue into the future.
Please consider making an annual donation, no matter how small it may be, and forward your check to WPLHF in care of
PDG Geoff Temple, 156 Dutch Lane, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. Every little bit helps. Thank you.

Lion Bobbie Billsborrow once again participated in
the St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser to raise
money for children's cancer research. This is Bobbie's
8th year participating, and she has raised $26,695.00
for children's cancer research over the years. Over the
course of the year, Bobbie sells candy bars and
popcorn, and collects donations for her fundraising
efforts. Bobbie is retired from the U.S. Navy, and also
spearheaded the military banner program in
McKeesport.

I recently completed a comprehensive history of our District which covers ninety-five years of
Lionism. It covers every Lions Club, Lioness Club and Leo Club that was part of 14B from the
Pittsburh Host Lions Club which was chartered February 25, 1920 up through the present day.
There are 128 pages which gives the history of 112 Clubs, including the nine Lioness Clubs and
the ten Leo Clubs, all of which made the District one of the most recognized in Pennsylvania.
Also included are the full District Cabinets with members names along with black and white
pictures of the Past District Governors going back to International Counsellor H. Turner
Frost’s year 1955-1956. (These are the only directories I had available from 1955 through
2015). A complete listing of all Past District Governors going back to 1920 showing the
membership and areas covered going from just one District (all of Pennsylvania) to the
eighteen Sub-Districts as of 2015. All annual State Conventions are listed going back to
1923, when they were held and where they were held – showing how many Clubs we had
and membership totals for each year.
This is a true historical recollection of how we got started and how we got to where we are
today. PDG’s W. Pryce Jenkins and Malcolm Lovejoy are to be recognized for the efforts they put
forth in accumulating the information for the first 70 years. It’s been a labor of love for me tho have been able to bring it up to date
through 2015. Copies will be available at a cost of $25 by reserving your copy by simply emailing me at [email protected].

Dr. James Withers an internal medicine physician from Operation Safety Net honored us with his presence on Tuesday,
February 9, 2016. The event was held at the Whitehall Public Library Community Room. He and his coordinator Chris
Roach talk with the homeless and find out who is new on the streets, working with them to help them get the services they
need. Operation Safety Net is part of the Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and Trinity Health sponsored by the Sisters of
Mercy. This organization touches the lives of hundreds of men and women living on the streets in Pittsburgh annually by
providing them with access to health care, hope and dignity. To read more about Dr. Withers and how to make a donation
