This week’s readings: Fourth Sunday of Advent Nathan the prophet is the source for reminding us that God said he, “will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. As Christians, we believe this is a reference to Jesus being raised up. As wonderful as David may have been to God, this scripture points toward one who is even more in line with whom God has in mind, his son, Jesus.

We then shift to the familiar story of Mary responding to Gabriel. It is interesting that Gabriel means “God is my strength”, which appears to echo with Mary herself, who relies on God’s strength to make good his promise, even as improbable as it may seem. As we prepare for Christmas, whom do we rely on for our strength?

Next week’s readings: The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

As we celebrate the Holy Family we are sometimes at odds with our own experiences of family life. In today’s world the word “family” has been chopped up to mean many dif-ferent things. Many families are broken and unrecognizable. Many people are single for assorted reasons. Many people are separated from their family for reasons as varied as war, jobs, lifestyle, economics, illnesses or death. How do we celebrate God’s gift of family under such conditions? Each of us may respond differently, however, I suggest we look to whom Jesus said were his brothers and sisters and mother. Perhaps the Holy Family can help us all recognize our common Father, and to reach out to our brothers and sisters and mothers, and fathers.

Tech CornerPope Francis has declared the new liturgical year as the Year of St. Joseph. “All the faithful will thus have the opportunity to commit

themselves, with prayers and good works, to obtain with the help of Saint Joseph, head of the celestial Family of Nazareth, comfort and relief from the serious human and social tribulations that today grip the contemporary world,” the decree states. Pope Francis also added

indulgence opportunities to the decree. The decree explains four ways to obtain a plenary indulgence throughout this liturgical year.

School News from the Principal Dear Fatima Family,

Today is the fourth and last Sunday of Advent. The fourth candle of Advent is called the “Angel Candle” and symbolizes peace. The name comes from the fact that the angels announced that Jesus came to bring peace.

The color is purple and represents love through the Messiah.During this challenging time when we are faced with uncertainty, may God bless you with peace as you trust in

him. Peace, Ms. O’Connor

Ask the PastorHow is it that those politicians who openly support

abortions can receive Eucharist? The answer, while complex, boils down to two canon laws and how they are interpreted.

Can. 915 Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are

not to be admitted to holy communion.

Can. 916 A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition which includes the

resolution of confessing as soon as possible.

The first deals with a juridical act by a bishop or other ecclesial authority. If a person’s bishop, (a) which is determined by his or her domicile, (b) or the pope, or (c) a given bishop exercising authority in his

own diocese, regarding a grave public sin has formally stated that someone may not be admitted to Holy Communion.

The second deals with the conscience of a person. This is a determination of a person and his or her confessor regarding grave sin.

As you can see there are two distinct issues. The first, the 915 Canon, deals with a formal state of Excommunication, which is proclaimed and enforced by a bishop with competent authority. This would be similar to a secular judge in WV making the official declaration that someone guilty of DUI homicide loses

the right to possess a driver’s license or to drive a motor vehicle. The second, the 916 Canon, is like a person who knows he or she is an alcoholic making a choice to not possess a driver’s license or drive a vehicle. For example, I know of alcoholics who rather than tempt

themselves purposely have chosen to not get a driver’s license or own a motor vehicle.

A local priest, with certain exceptions, does not have jurisdiction or authority to refuse someone presenting themselves for Communion, unless the local bishop, or other bishop with competent authority, has declared such. It is important to remember that Excommunication is a ecclesial discipline calling someone to repent,

not a political issue, though I understand some want to make it a political issue.

Thank You from the Serving Hands! OLF Serving Hands would like to thank everyone who took their time to help with our much-needed Christmas Scarf Project. We delivered 447 beautiful, handmade items which included scarves, hats, headbands, cowls, gloves, dishcloths, prayer shawls and socks.

These lovingly handmade items were donated to Golden Girls, Ronald McDonald House, Harmony House, Branches, Spring Hill Elementary school, Project Hope, First Steps and ECCHO.

I am so humbled and grateful to the many people in our community for their gifts of time and talent. If anyone needs more yarn, please visit the yarn cabinet in the west end of the church.

Thank you, Janet Yost

Do you knit or crochet? We are proud to announce that we have been gifted with some beautiful new yarn. There is enough of some colors for prayer shawls and plenty for scarfs and hats. Please take whatever you need. We will replenish the yarn once it is depleted. Remember that the bottom drawer has the fancy yarns. If you have friends and neighbors that are interested in helping with our project, please feel free to take them some yarn. We are excited to start collecting new items for the new year.

"Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. "Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name

him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his

father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."

O God, eternal majesty, whose ineffable Word the immaculate Virgin received through the message of an Angel and so became the

dwelling-place of divinity, filled with the light of the Holy Spirit, grant, we pray, that by her example we may in humility hold fast to your will. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and

reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
