O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home.

Beneath the shadow of thy throne

thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone,

and our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame,

from everlasting thou art God, to endless the years the same.

A thousand ages in thy sight are like and evening gone;

WELCOME and INTRODUCTION

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

All. And also with you.

We have come together in the name of Christ, in sadness to commemorate the

darkness of the Great War and other wars and conflicts, in shame for our stubborn and

selfish hearts.

To honour the courage of those who gave themselves in time of war,

in hope to pray for peace throughout the world,

and in joy to proclaim the light and victory of Christ.

As we ask that God’s will may be done in this and every place, so we pray together

As Jesus Christ has taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

1 The kingdom of God is justice and joy; for Jesus restores

what sin would destroy. God's power and glory

in Jesus we know and here and hereafter

the kingdom shall grow.

2 The kingdom of God is mercy and grace;

the captives are freed, the sinners find place,

the outcast are welcomed God's banquet to share; and hope is awakened

in place of despair.

3 The kingdom of God is challenge and choice: believe the good news,

repent and rejoice! His love for us sinners

brought Christ to his cross: our crisis of judgement

for gain or for loss.

Four candles symbolising North, South, East and West are already lit before the service and carried from the four corners of the church during the hymn.

The four candles are gradually extinguished as a sign of the darkness and despair that followed the outbreak of war Silence is kept. THE TAIZE CHANT: Within our darkest night. In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father:

we confess that we have sinned

in thought, word and deed.

help us to amend what we are,

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

‘See, the home of God is among mortals.

He will dwell with them;

they will be his peoples,

and God himself will be with them;

he will wipe every tear from their eyes.

Death will be no more;

mourning and crying and pain will be no more,

for the first things have passed away.’

I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. “The sending out”

At the beginning of this service we had 4 candles to symbolise the 4 corners of the earth.

As we leave this Holy Place we are reminded that we too are to be the peace makers and

sharers of Christ light and Gospel of love, joy and peace for all people.

HYMN 514: We cannot measure how you heal

We cannot measure how you heal or answer every sufferer's prayer,

yet we believe your grace responds where faith and doubt unite to care.

Your hands, though bloodied on the cross survive to hold and heal and warn,

to carry all through death to life and cradle children yet unborn.

The pain that will not go away,

the guilt that clings from things long past, the fear of what the future holds are present as if meant to last.

But present too is love which tends the hurt we never hoped to find,

the private agonies inside the memories that haunt the mind.

So some have come who need your help,

and some have come to make amends, as hands which shaped and saved the world

are present in the touch of friends. Lord, let your Spirit meet us here to mend the body, mind and soul,

to disentangle peace from pain and make your broken people whole
