Girls inc. of carpinteria is a member of Girls incorporated®, a nonprofi t organization that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. With local roots dating to 1864 and national status since 1945, Girls inc. has responded to the changing needs of girls through research-based programs and public education efforts that empower girls to understand, value, and assert their rights. We provide programs for girls 6 to 18 years old that focus on science, math, and technology; health and sexuality; economic and fi nancial literacy; sports skills; leadership and advocacy; and media literacy. to learn more, become a volunteer or offer support, please visit www.girlsinc-carp.org.

Dear Friends,The last few months have certainly been challenging, and

we are grateful for the first responders who continue to show up every single day to keep our children and families safe. The spirit of resilience is powerful among our community, and we are proud to see everyone coming together during this difficult time.

At Girls Inc., we encourage girls to break past obstacles and overcome complex challenges, providing them with the life skills, confidence, and role models necessary to fuel their resistance and achievement. They learn to find solutions. They learn to rise above. They learn to join forces and persevere. Creating positive change and breaking the cycle of limitations for girls and young women is what sets Girls Inc. apart from other organizations.

2017 was a year of milestones, expansion and significant progress for Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. Our inaugural cohort of Girls Inc.’s Eureka! Program graduated this spring and many are now attending SBCC, California State University Bakersfield, UCSB, University of San Francisco and University of San Diego. Seventy more girls, eagerly hoping to follow in their footsteps, are currently completing college applications and essays, researching summer externships, or preparing for their second summer at UCSB with Eureka!

Our new program in Santa Paula has been tremendously successful. The Santa Paula BOLD FUTURES Mentoring Project combines volunteer mentors, professional staff, and research-based programming to help girls ages 9-14 engage in school, build healthy relationships and reduce risky behaviors. Nearly 80 girls participated in 9,000+ hours of small group mentoring sessions and Girls Inc. programming.

A new partnership with UCSB’s South Coast Writing Project provided small group work and one-on-one support to junior and senior girls in the Eureka! program. The program guided our girls through the writing process, providing essay prompts and resources and encouraging them to tell their stories through compelling narratives.

At Girls Inc., we are committed to continually assessing our programs and adjusting them to meet the changing needs of our girls as they navigate toward adulthood. We are eager for all that’s ahead in 2018, as we continue to focus on serving more girls.

Our partners and supporters help make the Girls Inc. experience possible. Without each of you, Girls Inc. is unable to provide the life-changing experiences to help girls thrive. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who give of their time, talent, or treasure so girls can grow up strong, smart, and bold.

It takes all of us – working together – to ensure the success of our girls and our community.

Thank you for the role you play.

a crowd favorite is "long island relays," in which the girls race one another while carrying their entire team's sticks.

our girls have been enjoying the exciting opportunity to learn a new team sport: lacrosse. We are grateful to be working with cate school and their incredible student coaches, who have been teaching participants the basics, from scooping ground balls, to defensive moves, to “walking the dog.” in addition to teaching the fundamentals, the lacrosse program focuses on making connections, teamwork and overcoming obstacles. thank you to coach andrew Macdonnell along with student coaches Maddie erickson and Brie Walker for partnering with us to offer a fun, new way to challenge our girls!
