2013-2014 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

CONGRESSWOMAN VISITS GIRLS INC.

Q&A WITH ALUMNAGRACIELA RODRIGUEZ

WOMEN OF INSPIRATION

A Message from Our Executive Director Dear Friends,Girls Inc. of Carpinteria honors the contributions of women everywhere because we

understand that their work improves the lives of families and communities,  setting  the stage for the next generation. Our continuum of programs opens doors to new ideas,

new dreams and new leadership opportunities for girls like Arianna. is young leader  battled illness, including a head injury, as a young girl.  Her mother

brought Arianna  to  Girls Inc. when she was in early primary school and shehas participated in nearly every program that we off er. Girls Inc. has helped her build  resilience,  develop  a support network, and  acquire  the skills  she needed to become an advocate for the Carpinteria community. Arianna, who has completed over 2,600 community service hours,  spent six years  success-

fully nurturing a diverse local coalition to ban smoking in the city of Carpinteria to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke and decrease tobacco-related

litter.  She  and her peers  researched, attended trainings, connected  with local businesses, educated community members, and spoke at City Council meetings. She

also helped write and produce a PSA  on the issue. e ban went into eff ect May 16, 2011. Arianna embodies our mission of being strong, smart, and bold, and demonstrates how with the right support, girls can achieve and change their communities for the better.

I never forget, in my role as the Executive Director of Girls Inc. Carpinteria, that we are preparing the next generation of leaders who will impact the world far beyond our local community.

Warmly,

Victoria Juarez, Executive DirectorVictoria Juarez

PROGRAMSPOTLIGHT:CREATIVE WRITING PROJECTIN VENTURA COUNTY

Girls Inc. has provided services for female minors in collaboration with Ventura County Probation since 1999. Most recently, Girls Inc. teamed up with the Women Law-yers of Ventura County to implement the Creative Writing Project. The goal is to give young, incarcerated girls a voice and also a tool to process the circumstances which led to their incarceration and share their life experiences. The Creative Writing Project seeks to empower girls at the Juvenile Justice Center by strengthening their ability to express themselves, write creatively and set goals for the future.

As part of the Creative Writing Project, the girls meet as a group once a month to read poetry or literature aloud, participate in various creative writing activities and then share their written work together in an open forum that is both accepting and encouraging of each girl’s work. The value of writing as a means of therapy, processing, and empowerment has been explored in other forums and is often used as a tool in working with incarcerated adults. The Creative Writing Project seeks to bring the benefi ts of creative writing to the girls at the Juvenile Jus-tice Center to give them a way to heal and grow through the written word.

Congresswoman Lois Capps visited Girls Inc. of Carpinteria this summer to speak to Girls Inc. members about her career in Congress and her roles and responsibilities in representing her dis-trict in Washington, D.C. e Congresswoman joined the girls in a media literacy activity de-signed to help young women navigate a world in which visual media misrepresents both women and men through digital editing.

At Girls Inc., we provide our girls with the proper tools to gain confi dence in their bodies and minds and resist gender stereotypes. is message is central to the Congresswoman’s Truth in Advertising Act of 2014, which she introduced in Washington, D.C. in March.

“Our youth are faced with unrealistic depic-tions of beauty every day, and research has high-lighted the negative consequences of that expo-sure. We need to promote realistic body images to our nation’s young men and women. Girls Inc. is helping girls identify this with the Media Lit-eracy Program, and the Truth in Advertising Act would elevate this conversation to help all young people.”

– Congresswoman Lois CappsWe’re proud to provide girls with opportunities

to meet female leaders from a variety of fi elds, in-spiring them to dream big, explore all possibilities and envision themselves in leadership positions in the future!

Congresswoman’s Visit to Girls Inc.Encourages Members to Dream Big

Graciela shared her story at this year’s Eve-ning in Bloom gala of how Girls Inc. changed her life and helped her achieve success.

ALUMNA PROFILE:Q: Tell us about your involvement with Girls Inc.A: I joined Girls Inc. when I was just six years old and I’ve been part of the family for 30 years now! Growing up, I participated in the en-richment, entrepreneurial, and teen programs, and eventually, began mentor-ing young girls in the Car-

GRACIELARODRIGUEZ

pinteria community. I’ve come full circle as a former mem-ber, then employee, and now a member of the Girls Inc. National Latina Advisory Board. Girls Inc. has given me so much, and I’m so grateful for every opportunity to give back.

Q: What challenges did you face during these years and how did you overcome them?A: As a young teenager, despite my successes, I was unhappy and had poor self-esteem. All I could worry about were my family issues. Like many girls, I also had struggles with body image. My life changed dramatically when I got involved in the Girls Inc. teen programs and received counseling. Girls

Inc. also challenged me to make something positive out of my struggle. I’ve gone on to share my story and publish an essay in several body image and educational books, and continue to use my experiences to empower young women overcoming adversity.

Q: How did Girls Inc. inspire you to become a leader?A: Girls Inc. helped me discover my potential and open my eyes to endless possibilities. I knew very early on that my calling was to work with kids, and after becoming the fi rst in my family to at-tend college, I went on to earn my teaching credential and mas-ter’s degree. I continue to share the lessons and encouragement I learned at Girls Inc. in my role as a teacher. I have the bless-ing to inspire young children every day to pursue their dreams and believe that anything is possible, like Girls Inc. did for me.

Q: What are one of the life lessons you learned at Girls Inc.?A: You cannot go through life without making mistakes. It’s what you learn from those mistakes and what you do with the knowledge that really counts. Girls Inc. empowered me to be the architect of my own destiny!

Welcome our newboard Members

Our annual fundraiser turned out to be an eve-ning of success, bringing together nearly 250 peo-ple at Westerlay Orchids, which for the second year served as a beautiful set-ting for our glamorous event.

We honored local fl ow-er growers Ed Van Wing-erden, owner of Ever-Bloom, and brother Win Van Wingerden, owner of Maximum Nursery. Both our honorees have deep roots in the com-munity and are longtime, passionate supporters of Girls Inc. of Carpinte-ria. We’re so grateful for their leadership and all that they do in our com-munity!

Girls Inc. alumna Gra-ciela Rodriguez spoke movingly about the role Girls Inc. of Carpinte-ria played in her journey from childhood hardship to successful local educa-tor, by opening her eyes to endless possibilities. Now a fi rst grade teach-er at Adelante Charter School, Graciela contin-ues to spread our vision and inspire youth to dis-cover their full potential.

A special thanks to our incredible event co-chairs, Donna Baird and Stefanie Herrington, as well as our board of trust-ees and the many com-munity members who made the event a success. And of course, we want to thank all of our terrifi c donors, event sponsors and attendees. Each year, our Women of Inspiration luncheon honors local women mentors and leaders in our community. This year, we were proud to recognize Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara, non-profit leader Cynder Sinclair, and Girls Inc. alumni Rebecca Costa Smith and Lindsey Connelly, founders of Destined for Grace.

The luncheon boasted record attendance, and guests were stunned by our inspirational speaker Alix Generous, a 21-year-old college student with Asperger’s who was misdiagnosed as a child with various mental illnesses and learning disabilities. She shared moving messages about how she embraced the challenges she faced growing up and found the right kind of help that en-abled her to flourish.

At her young age, Alix has spoken to the United Nations, deliv-ered a TED Talk and helped make a major scientific contribution in applying quorum sensing to alleviate the damage to coral reefs.

She’s currently working toward a degree in neuroscience and works to promote STEM while advocating on behalf of women, youth and mentally diverse individuals in science.

Alix’s story proves that we invest in our youth, we enable them to do big things – and in turn, the community is stronger for it. Someday, the young girls we’re serving in our programs are going to change the world!

A huge thanks to our incredible event co-chairs Nancy Kop-pelman, Nini Seaman and Sandra Tyler for all the time and hard work they put in to making this year’s luncheon our most suc-cessful yet!

We’ll be announcing details soon for the 2015 Women of Inspiration luncheon next spring, so stay tuned… We hope to see you there!
