FROM THE EMMAUS COMMUNITY LAY DIRECTOR

Romans 14:19 (The Voice) “Join us, and pursue a life that creates peace and builds up our brothers and sisters.”

Emmaus has been such a blessing in my life and I’m sure many of you would say the same. As I am writ-ing this, I am also thinking about preparing palanca for the ladies of E-174 and the men of E-175. As I think about palanca, I am reminded of my own walk and the many teams on which I have served. There is a sense of excitement for both the team and the pilgrims as they head to Meadowkirk. Don’t you wish you could do it all again? But I think the real question is do you still have that excitement for the other areas of your faith? Do you still have the ex-citement to serve both the Emmaus community and your local church? I am so excited for the women and men that will walk on E-174 and E-175. I am praying for the two teams that will lead these amazing weekends. But NCA Emmaus is not just the weekends, no matter how im-portant they may be. We hope you will continue to attend Ultreyas each month. The pilgrims would love to see your faces at Mananita and Closing. We always need palanca, but also need the prayer wheel filled, goodies sent to the mountain and place-mats for the dining hall. We are coming up on our November Ultreya when we will have our board elec-tions. We have a good slate of candidates for the board openings for 2016, but we can still use a few more if you are lead to take on this task. We are still looking for people to take over the positions of Board Secretary and Emmaus Treasurer. These two posi-tions are so important to the community and we are hoping to fill these positions in the near future. It’s hard to believe that the walks for 2015 are about to come to an end. Each year we welcome approxi-mately 120 new members to the NCA Emmaus fam-ily. How many of these new people have you gotten to know? I would like to challenge everyone to find someone they don’t know at the next Ultreya and in-

troduce themselves to them. Make our new pilgrims welcome and encourage them to become a vital and active member in our community. The only way the Emmaus will continue to grow and thrive is if our new pilgrims find the love for “passing it on” that we have already found. So instead of just speaking with old friends at the next Ultreya, make some new ones as well.

Dear Friends:Looking out from the perspective of the pulpit it has been a difficult week in our world. There are so many issues relevant to our Christian life on which people of good faith are bitterly divided, and this week was no different. Sometimes it seems like no matter what is said or done, there will be angry and belittling attacks from all sides. And on a frustrating yet far less serious note, the storms have caused many churches to cancel or postpone fall festivals planned to encounter and engage the people in their communities. I hope you are able to reschedule your events.

I want to take this opportunity to lift up one of the truly positive stories of our community. Last night I had the privilege to attend a celebration marking the 20th Anniversary of Rising Hope United Methodist Mission Church, a church serving a community of people who are homeless and disenfranchised along the Route One Corridor in the Fairfax County section of Alexandria. Rising Hope is primarily the vision of one person, Rev. Dr. Keary Kincannon, its founding Pastor. Keary, who walked on E-83, had served at Sojourners, an intentional faith community in Washington, DC, when he felt the call to start a church that would serve, in Keary’s words, “the last, the lost, the lonely and the left out.” Rev. Jim Wallis, the leader of Sojourners, shared last night that he asked Keary where he thought he was going to do that. Keary’s response was that he didn’t know, but God was calling him to do it, so he trusted God to figure it out.

In 1994 Kincannon was appointed to explore the religious needs and interests of the people along the Route One Corridor, a location with some of Northern Virginia’s greatest affluence and some of our most intractable poverty. In walking the streets, talking with residents, business owners and community leaders, it was recognized by all that this was a community in need of Rising Hope.Over the years Rising Hope has had four locations, all needed to accommodate the growth of the church in attendance and ministry. Rising Hope has been at its current location at 8220 Russell Road since 2005. Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ has always been at the center of the Rising Hope ministry with worship, Bible study, counseling and recovery circles, and a priority is equipping its people who live on the margins of society to find stability and the capacity to face life’s challenges. So in addition to worship and study, Rising Hope serves breakfast and lunch after worship, Tuesday – Friday, and every Sunday. They have a food pantry and a clothing closet. And from December 1st – March 31st, Rising Hope hosts a nightly hypothermia shelter completely staffed by volunteers.

There are many success stories at Rising Hope. People have traversed difficult paths at rock bottom and have received the help and encouragement needed to put them on an upward path in spirit and in life. People have moved on from their days at Rising Hope to be leaders of other congregations. We know that all stories do not end with success, but even there, Rising Hope has been a safe place for dispirited grieving people to gather together and to know comfort and the peace that passes all understanding.

The ministries of Rising Hope are possible only because people from many churches and community groups support Rising Hope financially and as volunteers. It was great to see people representing many faith traditions at last night’s celebration.

Our Emmaus community is spread across Northern Virginia, and there are a variety of ministries across this large community that help people who are poor, homeless, at risk and disenfranchised. These ministries are in need of our support, and their accomplishments are to be celebrated, for they reflect people serving the kingdom of God, here and now. And I am confident that these efforts are far more beautiful in the eyes of God than the manner with which we handle our disputes and differences.

It’s already October. May we bring a season of Thanksgiving to our communities with our gifts and our service to our churches and to the work of Christ in this world.

Blessings, Rev. Garey Eakes, SD

National Capital Area ChrysalisFrom Our Chrysalis, CLD

DeColores my beautiful brothers and sisters in Christ,I hope this Fourth Day Journal finds everyone well. My name is Jacob Mosser and I am the newly elected Chrysalis Lay Director. The new Chrysalis Board met on Labor Day to have a “Chrysalis Board retreat”. We enjoyed a wonderful meal together and then used the rest of the evening to talk about what it means to be on the Chrysalis Board, discussed our role as a Board and what our goals were for the fu-ture. We as a body stand to lead our youth and young adults in strengthening their faith in Jesus, connecting them to the overall body of Christ and empowering them to be leaders for the future of the Church. The Rectors for Chrysalis 91 have been chosen. Aaron Listopad, Megan Brobst, Katie DeVaughn and Stu Mentzel will be serving as the Rectors for the up-coming weekend. Please be in prayer for them as they begin to decide upon a Cadre and prepare to select a Team. If you are interested in teaming, I would encourage you to prayerfully consider it first and if you feel led, to then fill out an application on-line at our website www.NCAChrysalis.com, which will then give your information to the R’s. Also, it is never too early to start asking youth if they would like to attend this upcoming Chrysalis week-end which will be Janaury 15-18th, which is MLK weekend. Once again, we will be going back to the lovely 4H Center in Front Royal, VA. You can have the youth fill out the application online as well. Donna Morris is going to be our new registrar who will be handling the applications. Once you submit an application, you will be notified that it is in.We will be having a Chrysalis gathering called a Hoot on Saturday, November 14th from 7-9 PM at Christ Church. This event will be filled with games, fellowship and worship of our “rockin” awesome God. I encourage every youth, young adult and adult to come out for this wonderful fellowship gathering. Please talk with me or John Rowe if you have any questions. “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity”-1 Timothy 4:12Fly With Christ,

From the Emmaus Music Directors, MD’s

Some lyrics to "Holy Spirit" which the Billingsleys and C90 so beautifully lead as we circled the sanctu-ary at September Ultreya:

"Let us become more aware of your presence, let us experience the glory of your goodness. Holy Spirit, you are welcome here". Wow

He speaks to us, guides us, comforts us, lifts us through music. Praises.  October Ultreya, lead by the women of E-174, will rock with the theme song "Overcomer"!  Exciting to think how He will use them and that song to encourage and strengthen all.

Please bring your guitar and voice and play along anytime!  It would be a blessing. We love you! Con-tact us for further info:

NOMINATIONS COMMITEEThe Nomination Committee welcomes submission of names from those willing to serve on the 2016-2017 board.  We meet monthly, usually the first Monday at 7pm in Springfield, VA. It involves commitment and responsibility in representing the NCAE community in business, decisions, concerns, and planning.  It is also a huge blessing to serve in this capacity.   Please submit your name and a short (3-4 sen-tences) of why you desire to serve on the NCAE Board.  This statement will be shared with the board and in publications such as FDJ and Ultreya to the community.  The election will be at the November Ul-treya and your presence is requested. Thank you. Please advise us of your interest. Nancy Geeting, Rich Wunderlin and Mary Ann Krauss    You may use address - [email protected]

COMMUNITY PALANCAI am the Community Palanca Cha. I need volunteers to make placemats for me. We need 270 decorated placemats for each team that goes to the Mountain.

I will have blank placemats at the Ultreyas each month. You can create your own design, either free hand, trace from a coloring book, use markers, glitter and glue to create your designs. You can either do them yourselves or get your Sunday School classes to do them. The pilgrims really like them when they come from the children. There are two kinds needed: the ones that are decorated with cute pictures and words, and ones that specifically say “DeColores”. It does not matter what the picture is, it only needs to say “DeColores” somewhere on the placemat. If you wish to make a set for a specific weekend that is great but you need to mark the envelope this is for E-# and I will make sure it goes on that weekend.

You can do placemats for Chrysalis they need the same decorated and instead of saying DeColores they say FLY WITH CHRIST. If you want to do them for Chrysalis you can get them from me also, and re-turn them to me.

Or what about your cloth Palanca bags that you re-ceived on Friday. How many of you sew? You can go to your fabric store and pick up some material. Rainbow material works well, I guess because most people don’t want to use it as a dress. I will have the dimensions available for you if you’re interested at the Ultreya.

Do you remember your Joy Flag Parade? Joy flags are always needed. These can be made from paper or fabric, and can be as simple or intricate as you desire, as long as they say “Joy” somewhere on the flag. These should always be the pennant shape, too. You may also specify the joy flags for specific weekend also.

First stones are simple. Go outside, pick up a rock, and write “First” on it. Please write “F-I-R-S-T” and not “1-S-T on it. We have felt for the “I’m Lovable” flower pin that you received on Friday. Men get a pennant-shaped ribbon, and felt is available for both. Do you remember being showered with Warm Fuzzies on Sunday? If you love yarn, then this is the project for you. At the Ultreyas there will be the prayer wheel for you to sign up to pray and also, there will be a sheet passed that will have snacks for the weekend. You can sign at the Ultreyas. Food for the weekends needs to get to the Head Cha before Tuesday of the week that the team is going unless you are sponsoring someone and will be going to the mountain on Thursday.

Where do I get all of the material or instructions, you may ask. Well, you can pick up placemats, felt for flowers and banners, and yarn for warm fuzzes at the Ultreya each month. You can also pick up or re-turn items at the Ultreya. There is usually a table near the church’s entrance where items are placed. Or you can find me and hand items to me.

If you’re not available to attend the Ultreya, you can contact me. My email address is [email protected] and phone number is 703- 216-2469. And if you’re concerned about getting an item to me quickly, we can always keep in touch by phone and work out something. If you are willing to serve as Palanca Chairman for your church please fill out the information on the clipboard that I will have at each Ultreya in the front. Please list which items your group is interested in doing, so when I am running low on items I can contact the chairman.

If you are in a reunion group this is a good project that you could do. So, check with your group and see what items you all would love to do. If someone from your church has already signed up then you don’t need to. I am looking forward to working with you!

If you would like to get placemats please call Linda Smith 703-216-2469 and she will meet you to get them to you. Thank you

E174 – “Unsinkable Faith” Oct. 08 - 11, 2015A Message from the "R"

The theme of E-174 is UNSINKABLE FAITH – in-spired by the story of Peter stepping out of the boat, in the midst of stormy weather, keeping his eye on Jesus and being able to walk on water! What courage, what faith on the part of Peter! What love, what care on the part of God!!! Peter must have later danced with joy, knowing he had earned bragging rights for life with that one act!! And how he bragged about Jesus’ love for each of us…. he became the Rock on which Christianity stands.

Oh that we can do the same! To have faith that would allow us to boldly say to the storms in our lives – He will calm you or He will calm me – either way, I will be dancing and singing on the waves, with arms flung wide, pouring out His praise!

Our weekend verse is Psalms 30:11-12: He turned my mourning into dancing; He removed my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy; that my heart may not be silent, but sing His praises.

Our weekend theme song is Overcomer by Mandisa – a song that speaks to all this, as well as being one that makes whoever hears it, want to dance with joy and praise the Lord! … even in the midst of our storms!

The team has been called together by God for this weekend – just as each pilgrim who will answer yes to the call. And each one will be clothed with joy – no sackcloths here! I know that in the weeks and months leading to our time on the mountain – Octo-ber 8-11, 2015, each team member and pilgrim will have some

experience that will lead them to say – “this was a God wink! A moment when I knew that I was meant to be on E-174; a moment for me to demonstrate/ lean on/ cling to UNSINKABLE FAITH”.

I have already had many such moments – from the day I was called to be the R! So each day I wake up and praise Him for what He will do in my life that day. I have begun to expect God to show up in unex-pected places and inexplicable ways!! And He never disappoints! So my unsinkable faith grows stronger….

We covet your support and prayers for the team and the pilgrims and look forward to being witnesses of the great joy that will unfold on October, on the mountain – God’s dance party on the waves!

Blessings, Susan Verghese

Emmaus and Chrysalis Fun-raiser

The three month Audio-Visual Equipment Fund-Raiser was a success.  The goal was $4,500 to purchase (4) four A/V sets for the Emmaus and Chrysalis communities, and the total raised was $4,800.  The additional funds raised were used to purchase (4) Bluetooth speak-ers for the videos shown each weekend; and the bal-ance will be donated to the NCAE Sponsorship funds. Each kit consist of three primary components (1)84” screen self-contained screen and storage case, (2) 30-60” adjustable projector stand, and (3) a trunk with the projector, laptop table, cables, adapters,

Bluetooth speaker, and a “User’s Manual”.  The laminated User’s man-ual has images and instructions for every component in the A/V Set.

During the fund-raiser, an anonymous donation was made for $1,500 specif-ically ear-marked to purchase a com-mon software solution for the week-

ends and Ultreyas.  After conducting research and communicating with a majority of the Community Music Directors…the ProPresen-ter 6 (Pro6) software was pur-chased.  We now have (5) five li-censed seats for using this soft-ware; along with a Pro6-Cloud which allows the MDs to have a common storage space for shar-ing files, images, and videos as required. Having common software will further im-prove the quality of the music presentations in the fu-ture. The seats will be assigned and administered along with the A/V equipment, see below.

The equipment will be stored in a tempera-ture and humidity regulated environment.  When teaming is ready to start, contact Jim and Donna Morris for training on how the equipment is used, review of the man-ual, and to check-out the equipment needed for teaming and the weekends.

The NCA Em-maus website will also main-tain this information for fu-ture use, along with the ability to download the User’s Manual.

E-175 is “Let Faith and Grace Arise”.

Nov. 05 - 08, 2015A Message from the "R"

The 2015 Fall Men’s weekend in November is the next men’s weekend. Like all planned Emmaus weekends it will be a time to gather and faithfully serve the Pilgrims who respond to the opportunity to experience a National Capital Area Emmaus Week-end.

The weekend theme for E-175 is “Let Faith and Grace Arise”.

It is important to recognize and be aware that we have to ‘Let’ each team and pilgrim member come to realizations in their own way! They have to let them-selves be receptive and we have to let them digest and process internally based on their own experi-ences and reasoning. ‘Let’ as an action word – means we allow ourselves to be open to concepts and ideas, we are tolerant and understanding, we al-low things to occur at their own pace and we under-stand people will change or assimilated ideas differ-ently on their own accord.

‘Faith’ is something to be cultivated and to strive for. It is a culmination and demonstration of beliefs and trust in God and that plans for each of us, as a beloved child of God, do exist. Faith will be present for all experiencing the weekend as demonstrative Christian action that establishes, renews, or reinvigo-rates ‘Faith’. ‘Faith’ is a focal point for our lives with realization that the Holy Spirit is with us and helps us throughout our individual faith journey. Faith is the

confidence in what we hope for and assurance for what we cannot see!

A form of ‘Grace’ is Christian Action and Service dis-played all weekend. Grace concepts are addressed and discussed, and examples of grace hopefully res-onate with pilgrims (and team members) throughout the time on the mountain. We live and work with grace during the weekend and cultivate love and sin-cere caring for others by our Emmaus community actions serving God. These displays of grace for oth-ers are open for observation and hopefully apprecia-tion. We cultivate a better understanding of Grace and hope there are takeaways for the Pilgrims into their lives and interaction with family and churches.

‘Arise’ from a Christian perspective: the prophet Isa-iah called God’s people to step forward confidently and boldly, know that their Savior has come and won victory over sin.“Arise” was an integral command or direction of Jesus when he would heal people or ex-orcise demons – often the instruction was “arise” and go tell the town, the nation, all those you come across what God has done for you! So we hope and pray that pilgrims of E175 will ‘arise’ in their sur-roundings. That they tell their Church Families about Emmaus; use their talents and interests to advocate Christ’s teachings and work within their local churches, communities, and across their span of in-fluence to be active Christians. We can all learn that when we attempt to follow the command of Jesus he gives us the strength to arise!

The Dove and Cross together within the logo of the weekend has particular meaning. The Dove, as far back as Genesis, was a symbol of love and salvation by God. God, having cleansed the earth, repented and committed to nurture mankind and as a forgiving God to engage with one another in peace. God of-fered Jesus, his only Son, for the forgiveness of our sins and the cross represents that sacrifice. The combination of the Dove and the Cross on this week-end’s logo spans the entire bible: the Dove symbol-izes God’s love in the Old Testament and the Cross is a symbol of God’s love shown in the New Testa-ment.

For E175 we want it known that: we can come out of darkness once we know God’s loving light. Once we are aware and appreciate Jesus’s love and sacrifice (the Cross), we can be blessed with the fortitude of the perpetual presence of the Holy Spirit (the Dove). We can all share in a life bolstered by Christian val-ues and loving and authentic interactions with our Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Sincere Blessings – Tony Papp
