About Early Modern English Witchcraft Early modern period: Highly religious society Estimated 10,000 people were executed (many more tried) between Over 90% were women Mostly village level conflicts Different types of evidence allowed Sources we are looking at today Pamphlets Small, black-letter printed pages meant to be passed around and read out loud Third person (court clerk) usually wrote down in an edited form what he heard in the testimonies Confession considered prime evidence Woodcut images usually included 8-10 minutes: Read your trial through Then, with your partner, discuss the differences between the stereotypes we pointed out earlier and what you found in the testimony. 4 person groups Create a 2-3 minute presentation that discusses the differences in stereotypes that you found.
