Zen QuestionsZazen, Dogen, and

the Spirit of Creative InquiryTaigen Dan Leighton

Zen continuously questions. Thisdoes not necessarily involve findinganswers, but rather finding a space

in which to sustain questioning, being will-ing to remain present and upright in themiddle of questions. Being able to do thisenables us to live more flexibly, spaciously, and kindly with our not-knowing. Insightsand responses may appear, of course—sometimes more frequently as we settleinto the open spaciousness of meditation—but if the answers are worthy, they energizethe path of questioning.

This book begins by exploring “TheWorld of Zazen”—the essential physical

practice of sitting, the foundational practice of the Zen school—and presentsit as an attitude of sustained inquiry that offers us an entryway into truerepose and joy. Then Leighton draws deeply on his own experience as a Zenscholar, teacher, and translator, honoring the fact that most Zen teaching isnot discursive, but rather poetic and imaginative, and deeply exploring thepoetic mind of the ancient Japanese master Dogen, as well as the poetry ofRumi, Mary Oliver, Gary Snyder, and Bob Dylan. What’s more, Leightonuncovers surprising resonances between the writings of America’s FoundingFathers and Zen’s liberating ideals and considers the deep conflict betweenconsumerism and Zen and the Buddhist response to contemporary ecologi-cal and societal challenges.

Meditation onthe Nature of MindThe Dalai LamaKhöntön Peljor LhündrubJosé Ignacio Cabezón

Understanding of the mind’s natureis at the core of Buddhism, the keyto success in meditation and to the

profound insights at the heart of the Bud-dha’s path. The text at the center of thisbook, the “Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of theOral Tradition” by the Tibetan scholarKhöntön Peljor Lhündrub (1561–1637),combines both theory and practicalinstructions for meditating on the natureof mind. The work is easily accessible andnonsectarian in its approach, with liberalcitations from across the Indian andTibetan Buddhist spectrum. His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s broad-rangingoverview of this important text in the first part of this book insightfully dis-tills some of the most central themes of Buddhism.
