Nothing Is HiddenThe Psychology of Zen KoansBarry Magid224 pages | $16.959781614290827 | eBook 9781614291022October 2013
“Sparkling and clear.”—mark epstein, mD, author of The Trauma of Everyday Life
in his latest offering, Barry magid usesthe language of modern psychology and
psychotherapy to illuminate one of Bud-dhism’s most powerful and often mysteri-ous technologies: the Zen koan. Nothing
Is Hidden explores many rich themes, including facing impermanence andthe inevitability of change, working skillfully with desire and attachment, and discovering when “surrender and submission” can be liberating andwhen they shade into emotional bypassing.
From his perspective as a Zen teacher, magid tells us that enlightenmentbrings no secret teachings—because from the very beginning, nothing is hidden.meanwhile, from his perspective of the psychotherapist, he points out just howeasily and how often unresolved conflicts lurk in the shadows cast by the lightof realization or enlightenment—to the detriment of us all. incisive and inspir-ing, this is a book that will resonate for all explorers of inner lands.
BaRRy maGiD, mD, is a psychoanalyst and member of the fac-ulty of the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies and the
board of the International Association for Relational Psycho-
analysis and Psychotherapy. He is a Dharma successor to the late
Charlotte Joko Beck and leads the Ordinary Mind Zendo. He lives
in New York City.
