Letter From The President

The leaves have fallen, and we enjoyed a beautiful and unseasonably warm November here in

Wisconsin! As we reflect back on 2016, this is always a nice time of year to take stock of what

we have to be thankful for. As music teachers, we have our students. They bring us weekly joy

through their achievements and musical growth, occasionally challenge us to adapt and adjust

as we work through their struggles, and constantly enrich us personally and professionally in so

many ways. Just last week I got an email from a student thanking me for all I do, and it made

my day. I keep a folder for emails like this, as well as a spot in my desk for hand-written cards

(yes, students still write these!), and they are a most welcome resource on days when I need a

little encouragement.

As musicians, we have music itself to be thankful for. Many of you will likely be performing

this month in additional holiday concerts, studio recitals, or church services, or perhaps playing

at Christmas parties or other musical soirees that spring up. I believe it is so important to stay

active as a performer, in whatever context that means for you, as it intimately connects us with

our craft and that which we teach daily. And what a joy it is to share music with others, right?

As members of WMTA, we most certainly have each other to be thankful for. You are part of a

truly remarkable organization of supportive colleagues, and we can learn from – and help –

each other in so many ways. The collective energy I witnessed through sessions, workshops,

meals, and casual conversations at our State Conference in La Crosse in October was wonder-

ful, uplifting, and sustaining, and a great example of what is possible when we come together.

We lost Leonard Cohen, a great singer/songwriter/poet/novelist, a few days before I wrote this,

and I’d like to share a quote of his: “Act the way you’d like to be and soon you’ll be the way

you act.” Great advice for us as teachers, musicians, and human beings. Take a minute to think

about what you’re thankful for, and pay it forward with a kind word or action in the coming

days, weeks, and month. Never forget the incredibly impact you can make on your students’

and fellow teachers’ lives!

Sincerely,

Nicholas Phillips, DMA, NCTM

WMTA Leadership

The new Find-A-Teacher database is now available to all WMTA members. This feature

allows each of you to control information that is posted and seen by the public. You can

also promote yourselves with new profile options such as choosing multiple areas of ex-

pertise, adding a description of your studio, your photos, contact information and links to

outside sites. The office is frequently contacted about recommendations for music teachers

in a specific area. In the future, we will be sending all requests to this page to help them

find the information they need.

To create a WMTA online teaching profile, click on the link below, then follow the in-

structions on the screen. The processes should only take a few minutes. Once complete,

you will be able to access and change all of the information at any time. For questions, feel

free to contact the central office by emailing [email protected].

Local Association Presidents

WMTA membership stands at 446 (down 14 from a year ago). Several members did not re-new citing that they are retiring or no longer teaching. Keep spreading the word of what WMTA has to offer the music teacher as we look for new members– Support in a group of like-minded colleagues Professional resource in a national staff who are there to answer questions Division and State leaders who work to promote educational and networking opportuni-

ties Local Associations (if you are fortunate to have one in your area) who provide programs

and student opportunities.

Karen Thickstun, MTNA Membership Committee Chair, in a recent communication reminded us to look for local music stores to make connections with. Work together with them on pro-jects and then invite local teachers who are not WMTA members. Let them see the activities we have and the value of membership. The 2016 WMTA Conference provided ample opportunity to network with members from around the state. A breakfast was held Saturday for the first time attendees and new WMTA members. Good connections were made between members – sharing ideas and concerns about our teaching and how WMTA can help. If you have never attended a State Confer-ence, make it your goal to come next year – you will be surprised to see what you have been missing! The following WMTA members were recognized for their membership milestones at the Friday night banquet: 10 Years 25 Years 40 Years Theresa Camilli Ann Applegate JoAnn Hobbs Emily Cutler Lily Brissman Muriel Merbach Linda Johnson Lynn Emmons Hildegard Petermann Anne Kubiatowicz Gail Heywood Linda Sparks Flora Lim Jessica Johnson Teresa Lindahl Jodell Krause 45 Years Georgine Micklos Nancy Lephart Anna Asch Denise Taylor Judy Mitchell Carmen Shaw Joan Neton Dorie Petersen Arlyss Troge We mark these anniversaries from the time they became a member of MTNA and recognize them in our WMTA no matter where they lived before. Thank you to all of you for your years of service! Arlyss Troge 2

Membership Report

Rita Schuman, NCTM, WMTA State Chair for District Auditions

Please note new email for Rita: [email protected]

All District Auditions information can be found on the WMTA website.

Please study and review this information now as you begin to make plans for your students.

www.wisconsinmusicteachers.com. Look under “student events” and then “district auditions”.

GENERAL REMINDERS:

Put the auditions date and entry deadline date for your district on your calendar now!

District Chairs have been instructed to enforce all deadlines!

Teachers that enter students in the auditions MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK ON

AUDITION DAY!

A reliable substitute may take the teacher’s place if this arranged with the District Chairperson in ad-

vance. If a teacher (or substitute) does not arrive to help on auditions day, the teacher will be charged

a $75 fee.

TEACHER PARTICIPATION INFORMATION:

“Ovation” is the online site for registering students for participation in WMTA District Auditions.

www.ovation.wmta.net

All teachers who used Ovation for the 2016 auditions still currently have access through the end of December 2016.

By January 1, 2017, these teachers will be “re-activated” if they renewed membership by paying WMTA dues before

the October 15, 2016 deadline. These members will then have Ovation access Jan. 1 – Dec. 31 of 2017.

Additional note for teachers who used Ovation in 2016: WMTA has recently switched to a different online server that

hosts the Ovation site. Because of this, when you log onto the site, you need to fully retype the web address: in

other words, if your computer seems to remember the address and “auto-fills” the search bar as you’re typing, continue

manually typing the address to completion. If you just hit return when the computer starts to auto-fill the address, it

may likely retrace its steps to the old server for Ovation and it will come up with a message saying “server not found”.

WMTA teachers who did not use Ovation in 2016 that wish to enter students in 2017 district auditions, and have paid

dues by October 15, 2016, should contact Rita Schuman to be activated in Ovation.

Current WMTA members that renewed and paid membership dues late (after October 15, 2016) must pay a $100 late

renewal fee (written to WMTA) in order to be activated and gain access to log in to Ovation for the 2017 season. This

payment can be sent to Rita Schuman at 557 20th Ave. South, Onalaska, WI, 54650. The teacher will be activated as

soon as this payment is received.

WMTA District Auditions News

USING OVATION AND REPERTOIRE DATABASE INFORMATION:

To save time during the registration process, look for all of your students’ pieces that may already be in the da-

tabase before you begin registering any students. If the piece is not in the database, you will need to “add com-

position”. Finding your students’ compositions in the database, (or adding new pieces if needed), BE-

FORE you register your students, will significantly speed up the registration process.

AGAIN, REMEMBER:

ALWAYS CHECK THE COMPOSITION DATABASE BEFORE ENTERING YOUR STUDENT’S

PIECES. THERE’S A VERY GOOD CHANCE THE PIECE OF MUSIC IS ALREADY IN THE DA-

TABASE!

To do this, when logged into Ovation, select “composition title finder” from the menu options. Select the com-

poser’s name, leave the “title search string” field blank, and then hit “search”. All titles by that composer that

are in the database will appear in a list.

When logged into Ovation, also take a few minutes to look at the “help” page. The “help” button is located

on the upper right hand side of your screen near the “menu” and “log out” buttons.

For specific questions about allowed repertoire or pieces in the database, contact:

Emily Schultz - Ovation Composition/Database Manager. [email protected]

Good News! For all of you who were wishing for answer keys to the practice exams, they are available on the website to assist you in preparing your students for the theory exams.

FEES AND FINALIZING YOUR STUDENT ENTRIES:

ENTRY FEES for 2017:

D2 and D2NM: $20.00

D3, state track and duets: $25.00

Students do not pay WMTA directly. Students need to pay their teacher. Each teacher collects all fees and writes one

check to WMTA for the total of all their student entries. There is not a way to pay online at this time.

After you have entered the audition information for each of your students in Ovation, send the “teacher fee summary”

report form (print from Ovation) and one check written to WMTA for the total of all their entry fees to the District

Chairperson before the entry deadline.

WMTA District Auditions Dates

No scheduling requests are allowed due to the nature of the competition with various instruments and age categories. Mail the Badger Teacher Fee Summary along with ONE check for all entries to Chairperson, Nancy Burman, 1304 Bass Lake Rd., Hudson, WI 54016. Due with a postmark of April 15! Note that entry fees are the same as last year: Badger entry fee is $25.00 per entry. DO check the Handbook for all rules that must be complied with. As we work with the keyboard competition on the same day, there will always be some adjust-ments. But we will plan on the ‘end of the day’ winners’ recital. The recital was very well re-ceived last year, and is wonderful to have available again for the V/I students. Nancy Jane Burman, NCTM, Badger Vocal/Instrumental Chairperson

2017 Badger Competitions

I was so excited to introduce Jo Ann Hobbs as our Foundation Fellow at the State Confer-ence in La Crosse, WI. Jo Ann was humbled by our recognition of her accomplishments in her music career and her contributions to MTNA over the years. I am also thrilled to report that we met the dollar amount needed to solidify her as our Fellow. I want to shout out a huge thank you to all the Local Associations that elected to participate and donate baskets and monetary donations. Fox Valley, Greater Milwaukee Chapter, Kenosha, Michibago, Oshkosh, Rock River, St. Croix Valley, Superior, and Stevens Point. The baskets were filled with great gift items and brought in wonderful donations. I also want to thank many members for their individual donations. If you are still considering a donation to the MTNA Foundation Fund, checks can be submitted directly to the National Office. Please follow the link listed here: http://www.mtnafoundation.org/fellow-program/ Mail to: MTNA Foundation Fund, 1 W. 4th St., Ste. 1550, Cincinnati, OH 45202 Kathleen Latzke-Daley

Congratulations to all of our newly certified teachers.! We recognized many new faces of teachers who have successfully completed their certifica-tion throughout the past year at our state conference in La Crosse. I also had the opportu-nity to present with Laura Swenson about the benefits of certification and the process to-wards completing the certification projects at the state conference. There were many great questions and comments about the process and several WMTA members who were looking towards becoming certified. As a friendly reminder, the state currently provides reimburse-ment to teachers who have successfully completed the NCTM process upon verification of completion. If you have questions about the process, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I am most happy to help you out or point you in the direction of someone else who can. As you put together your studio documents for the spring semester, consider using that as a time to begin putting together a NCTM teaching portfolio. Best wishes as we conclude this 2016 year and look towards the holidays. Submitted by Dr. Justin Krueger DMA, NCTM

Online Lessons, Learning with Technology Series

Part 3 of 4

With winter comes cold weather and lots of snow, followed by canceled lessons due to sickness and

poor road conditions, leading to numerous make-up lessons or students unprepared for upcoming per-

formances. Luckily, there is a very easy solution to this problem – online lessons. If you enjoy teach-

ing online, you could also use it to expand your teaching hours and roster by teaching students in dif-

ferent time zones or continuing to teach a student that has moved away.

How

As long as both you and your student have a working Internet connection, as well as a computer, tab-

let, or even smartphone with a built-in camera and microphone you can do online lessons. I’d suggest

staying away from smartphones, especially if this is going to be a long-term situation. You want to

make sure that both you and your student can see each other’s faces and hands. It’s also much easier if

you have a copy of the music they’re working on and you both have the measures numbered.

Platforms

Skype – Skype is a free app you can download to your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Skype is

probably a safer idea if you’ll be teaching internationally, as their video calls are free as long as both

you and your student have Skype.

FaceTime – this is an Apple service, so both you are your student have to be using Apple products to

use FaceTime. There are ways to get this app on PC or android, but it may not be worth the hassle.

International calls are free if you’re connected to wifi, but not if you’re using your carrier network.

Google Hangout – Google Hangout is another free app that you can download to your computer, tab-

let, or smartphone. However, you or your student (not both) need to have a Google account and that

person would have to start the video call. International calls have a small fee.

More Resources

Talkboard – Talkboard is my go-to app for teaching theory online. First, both you and your student

need to download the app, which is only available on Apple products. Then you create a ‘board’ and

invite your student to join. Then, both of you can write on the same board, just like a whiteboard in

your studio.

Internet Midi – This is an app for both Apple and PC products. It’s very useful, but only works if both

you and your student have midi instruments. This will actually transmit what your student is playing

directly into your instrument and vice versa. Timewarp Technologies and Zenph.com offer this for

around $70.

WMTA Conference—reviewing the past and looking to the future!

Thank you to all who attended the October conference in La Crosse. Survey results were very posi-

tive (35 responses). The conference received high ratings for lodging, event facilities, quality/variety

of sessions. Responses stated: “the facility was great and the workshops were much better than I ex-

pected them to be”. They also thought the Radisson was a very convenient place to hold a conference.

The workshop receiving the highest rating was Molly Gebrian’s presentation on Brain Research.

So, now that the 2016 conference is history, we set our sights on the 2017 confer-

ence—and our official location (drum roll please!) for 2017 is MADISON! Yes, we’re

going to the capital. (We have not held a conference in Madison for over 15 years.)

The official conference facility is the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, which is located on the

west side of Madison, near Middleton. The dates are October 20-21st -and the Badgers do have a

home football game that weekend. Room rate (standard/double) is $134.00 per night with compli-

mentary WIFI and breakfast buffet included.

Two things we’re looking for—a few members to serve on the 2017 conference committee and ses-

sion proposals! Any member (esp. from the Madison region) are invited to serve on the conference

committee. Responsibilities include reviewing proposals, getting advertising/sponsors, handling local

publicity, overseeing exhibitors (these are ‘shared’ responsibilities).

This year the session proposal form may be found on the WMTA website’s conference page (please

use the online form).

“SAVE THE DATE” for our 2017 conference—and make it a family weekend as there’s lots to do in

Madison.

FVMTA LOCAL ASSOCIATION NEWS Members of Fox Valley Music Teachers Association congratulate Marillyn Freeman, a FVMTA found-ing member in 1976, on her 40-year membership as well as her 50 years service at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Neenah, Wisconsin! In addition to being a FVKTA charter member, Marillyn served as President as well as many other po-sitions too numerous to list! Scores of area music teachers and students have benefitted from Marillyn’s dedication to the art of performing and teaching! Marillyn was recently honored by her congregation with a special surprise worship service highlight-ing her musical talents and contributions she shared for 5 decades with the congregation. During Freeman’s tenure at St. Paul, she played organ and piano for services and rehearsals, directed children and youth choirs, organized and directed church musicals, guided the church in purchasing a new Dobson organ, and introduced many new service formats to the church. A graduate from Appleton High School in 1953, Marillyn completed her degree in music performance from Lawrence College in 1957. Throughout her career she continued to teach piano and organ as well as advancing her own musical education. In 1995, she earned an Associate of the American Guild of Organists degree, and in 2000, an Associate in Ministry. Marillyn has been a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota since college, has held the position of treasurer of the North East Wisconsin American Guild of Organists for 50 years, and is active in the Nation Hymn Society. She has played almost every organ in the Fox Valley area including the Braumbaugh organ at Lawrence University for graduation convocations. In 2014, she was asked to play for the installation of the new Synod Bishop and continues to develop worship services and play for Synod assemblies. 1st VP-Conference, Gail Heywood, NCTM – Thank you to Reed Music Studios for tuning the Piano’s for Con-

ference this year and to Ben Smith for proving music during Friday Evening. A location for next year is still

being determined. Conference received $350 in donations and $900 in ads. We have seven paid exhibitors in

a total of 14 tables. All collegiate chapters were notified in August regarding Collegiate Poster Sessions, un-

fortunately there were no applications received. We have three students performing in Masterclass this year.

2nd VP-Membership, Arlyss Troge – Many of the members who are not renewing membership are retiring or no

longer actively teaching. WMTA will need to encourage the younger generations to join to keep our numbers

up.

Treasurer, Rachel Fritz – The current income is $11,342.34. Expenses are $8,657.01. Current year balance is

$2,685.33. The checking account holds $$17,773.37. The money market account has $10,798.65. The CD has

for the amount that is in the CD.

Reports of Program Chairs

Arts Awareness and Advocacy, Drew Donica – WMEA has their own advocacy group Drew reached out to.

Information for the organization can be found at WAME.WMEA.com. He will be attending their meeting to

network and learn from them.

Badger Collegiate Competition, Drea Wagner, NCTM – The 2017 Badger Collegiate Performance Competi-

tion will be held on March 11, 2017. They are still working on a location for next year, but it should be an-

nounced soon. More information, including rules and entry form, will be available on the WMTA website.

Badger Vocal/Instrumental, Nancy Burman, NCTM – Badger V/I will continue to be with the piano Badger

completion in 2017. It will be in Eau Claire on Saturday, May 20, 2017. As of the June Board Meeting, we

will not require students/parents to sign a release form for pictures, because we are not posting student pic-

tures on the website any longer. We will have new forms up on Ovation soon. The deadline for both will be

April 15, 2017.

Badger Keyboard, Kayme Henkel – The deadline for entries is April 15, 2017. Badger Northwest will be in Eau

Claire on Saturday, May 20, 2017. Badger Northeast and Duets will be in UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, May

20, 2017. Badger South will be in Wisconsin Conservatory of Music on Sunday, May 21, 2017. Clarifications

will be given to the judges to help put them on the same page as the teachers and students.

College Faculty Representative, Jessica Johnson, NCTM – We didn’t get any collegiate poster sessions or re-

ceive many student registrations for Conference this year. Jess has been brainstorming on a session at Confer-

ence that would be specific for them. Good communication to the faculty in the spring would be needed to do

this. We want to make sure we are providing information specifically for them. Another idea was to give col-

legiate teachers an idea of the topics we are looking for with the poster sessions.

District Auditions, Rita Schuman, NCTM – The new Ovation server was recently changed and everybody will

need to type “ovation.wmta.net” into their browser to reach the new site. Further resources are being made

High School Virtuoso Competition, Bethany Hartlaub – The WMTA 2016 HS Virtuoso Competition was held

on October 8, 2016 at UW-Stevens Point in concurrence with the MTNA competitions. Four pianist partici-

pated in the competition. The history of this competition was discussed and ideas were bounced around about

ways to better support the event. It was originally formed to counter the MTNA competition in the Fall as an

alternative event. It’s still currently being held in the Fall so it doesn’t compete with Badger. It also provides

a cash prize. An idea was given that this event could be held by invitation from the winners of the spring

Badger competitions. Moving forward, we will push the education and PR for next year and see if it makes a

difference, before determining the future for this event.

Independent Music Teachers Forum, Mickey Lytle, NCTM – No report. Not present.

Local Associations, Lisa Zwiefelhofer, NCTM – Based on the 2015-2016 year-end reports, the thirteen WMTA

Local Associations had 317 members. Ten local associations will be honoring their Members of the Year at

the Conference banquet. Member recruitment continues to be the biggest concern. New, customizable mem-

bership posters and trifold brochures will be available soon. Big congratulations go out to Michibago Music

Teachers Association for being names the 2016 MTNA Local Association of the year!

Standing Committees

Ovation, Nicholas Phillips, NCTM – The planned server transfer has taken place. While this change was valu-

able, the transfer had a number of technical issues that are still being ironed out. If members experience diffi-

culty reaching the site, they should type “ovation.wmta.net” into their browser to reach the new site. Many

people have worked and continue to support the desired changes and features our members have requested. A

detailed list of updates was reviewed.

Central Office, Katie Butler – The December newsletter deadline is November 15th.

Finance – Rachel Ftitz – The finance committee consists of Rachel Fritz, Nick Philips, Rita Schuman, and Cath-

erine Walby. Catherine Walby will be assembling a guide for members on this subject.

Nominating Committee, Catherine Walby, NCTM – The four elected officers are the President, two VP’s, and

treasurer each elected for three year terms. All other positions are appointed by the President and also serve

three years. We have a president elect in place for one year so we need the names in place by next July to be

voted on during next 2017 October conference. Catherine is looking for a couple more people to serve on the

nominating with her.

Old Business

Summer Study Grants, Nicholas Phillips, NCTM – At the past meeting, the board discussed making this pro-

gram more competitive. When they ask for the grant, they should tell us what they are requesting the money

for. More information and requirements may be necessary up front when the applications are received. The

applications may need to include examples and better requirements. Selections could be rated higher for col-

legiate members of WMTA.

New Business

WMTA Facebook Wall of Fame, Nicholas Phillips, NCTM – Because members can’t post photos, this site

hasn’t had good traction. Each state determines their own guidelines for posting photos on social media and

in publications. Paperwork or files with the photo consent form would need to be collected again. The Board

discussed how we have done this in the past and how we want to do it in the future. Drew Donica motioned

to do away with the Wall of Fame page. Motion seconded by Nancy Burman. Motion passed unanimously.

Central Office Lease, Nicholas Phillips, NCTM – This office space currently costs $170.00 per month. It was

separated along with WCDA, but that isn’t the case any longer. The benefit is that we have a physical mailing

address. In addition to the expense, we have had difficulties with regular mail service. Discussion was made

about the financial and logistical benefits. Rita Schuman moved that we stop using the lease at the office in

Waunakee and pick up mail with a post office box near the office manager. Seconded by Rachel Fritz. Ap-

proved by consensus. Storage space and moving issues will be determined later.

Website Chair Position, Nicholas Phillips, NCTM – The website position is now open. The board discussed

how the position is being used different today than it was being used when it was set up in the past. Catherine

Walby motions that the Website Chair positioned no longer receive a stipend and continued in a different

format. Kayme Henkel seconded. Motion passed unanimously.

Announcements – The next board meeting will be a teleconference on February 3rd at 10am. And next summer’s board

meeting will be June 2nd starting at 9:30am.

Adjournment. 10:42pm.

with the purposes of lowering the cost to members. Seconded by Dorie Peterson. There used to be multiple

savings accounts and all were rolled into a CD is 2007. The executive committee voted to pull some of those
