Dr. Seuss’s first book was And to Think that I Saw it onMulberry Street and was published in 1937. He continued to writemany more books in his long career. He would go on to write 44children books. He uses rhymes and riddles to interest his readerswho are mostly children. He did a lot more than write short storiesfor kids. He also wrote poems and was an artist and cartoonist.

What is Dr. Seuss Day? Dr. Seuss Day is when peopleacross the world make a special effort to read to children. Dr.Seuss epitomized his love for children and their learning. “You arenever too old, too wacky, too wild to pick up a book and read to achild.” Hopefully you have all read The Cat in The Hat or GreenEggs and Ham. If not, you should check them out.

March 2 at the Badger School, the National HonorSociety students are sponsoring activities for Dr. Seuss Day.There is a Penny War to raise funds for the Badger School Library. If you like green eggs and ham, they will be served for breakfastthat day. You would be surprised to know that most of thestudents like green eggs and ham! We will also have cake at theend of the day to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. It should be a funday! “Be awesome! Be a book nut!”-Dr. Seuss

Give Me Some 3.14!By: Torie Frericks

Bring on the pie! Whoops, I mean pi as in 3.14. March 14 is theday when math is celebrated! The number 3.14 is the longest runningdecimal in the world, having infinite digits and never repeating. Thisnumber is well-known, but Pi Day is not known by a lot of people. Comeon, people, who doesn’t love some pi?

Why do we celebrate Pi Day anyway? Pi is such an amazingnumber that it deserves its own day. It is celebrated on March 14

because the calendar reads 3/14. Pi Day started in1988 when Larry Shaw created the holiday. It was firstcelebrated at the San Francisco Exploratorium, whichcontinues to hold Pi Day celebrations today. On PiDay, you can eat Eskimo pie ice cream, eat pie, playmath games, make a beaded necklace with a differentcolored bead representing a different number, and so

much more! At 1:59:26 on this day, special Pi Day events are held acrossthe country. This is because if you put the date with this specific time, itreads 3.1415926, which is pi to the seventh decimal place.

On March 14, invite some friends over, eat some pie, and seewhich person has pi memorized to the most decimal places. Pi Day iscertainly a day to celebrate because pi is the most incredible number inhistory. 3.1415926!

Go tohttp://www.amazon.com and search Windproof Umbrella Lynx to get the Windproof Umbrella for only $29.99.

What Day is This?By: Catherine Restuchi

The leprechauns are back! That’s rights it’s St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. Have you ever wonderedwho St. Patrick was, why we celebrate him, or why we wear green that day?

St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in A.D. 387. When he was sixteen, he was captured and taken toIreland. During his six years in Ireland as a captive, he became deeply religious. When he returned to England, hebecame a priest. He claimed he had a vision in which the people of Ireland appealed to him to come and walkamong them, so he returned to Ireland. The reason we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is because it is said to be theday he died.

Did you know Ireland’s national color is actually royal blue? Green is the color of Irish Catholics. Supposedly, St. Patrick usedthe shamrock to teach the Irish about the Holy Trinity. This is why the color green and the shamrock shape came to symbolize IrishChristianity, although St. Patrick himself is traditionally associated with the color blue.

In the city of Chicago, they dye the river green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. This tradition began when the parade organizerSteve Bailey, head of a plumbers’ union, noticed how dye used to trace possible sources of river pollution had stained a colleaguesoveralls a brilliant green. Bailey then thought why not use the dye to turn the whole river green.

In Nebraska, the world’s largest shamrock is painted on the road in the town of O’Neill, which is the Irish capital of Nebraska.Every year they install a huge blarney stone at the corner of the shamrock and hold many festivities, including a public reading of“Green Eggs and Ham.” So go out, have some fun, and share in the luck of the Irish!

March for Womenby: Kasey Pries

Women’s time to shine! March is NationalWomen’s History Month. It’s a celebration of women whohave contributed to our history, culture, and society. The2012 theme is “Women’s Education – Women’sEmpowerment.” Education is important for everyone, especially girls and women. Investing in a girl’s education isone of the most effective ways to reduce poverty. Educationhelps girls and women know their rights and gain theconfidence to claim them. The 1994 InternationalConference on Population of Development Programme ofAction quoted, “Education is one of the most importantmeans of empowering women with the knowledge, skills andself-confidence necessary to participate fully in thedevelopment process.”

Last year was the International Women’s Day 100th

anniversary. It was first celebrated on March 8, 1911, inEurope. In 1980 it became “Women’s History Week.” Ofcourse it didn’t stay as a week for long. Congress declaredMarch as National Women’s History Month in 1987 and isnow being celebrated nation wide.

One of the most influential women has beenEleanor Roosevelt, former first lady and humanitarian.Susan B. Anthony fought for the right to vote and alsofought in the war. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat ona Montgomery bus, better known as the Montgomery BusBoycott. Helen Keller was both blind and deaf but with thehelp of her teacher Anne Sullivan she learned tocommunicate and even wrote books and starred in a silentfilm. Amelia Earhart was the first woman to receive the U.S.Distinguished Flying Cross for being the first women to flysolo across the Atlantic Ocean. Oprah Winfrey, an Americanmedia proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer andphilanthropist, has influenced people all over the world.

Women have changed our country. Whetherwomen have fought for the right to vote, the right to fight inthe war, the right to fly an airplane, all women contribute tohistory. Take a moment and really thank all the women inyour life and what they have done for you. One day youcould make a difference in our history, culture, or society.
