LAKE SUPERIOR
1 TOWN OF BARKSDALE
KIOSK LOCATION: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Bono Creek Launch
The Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway (WLSSB)
begins at the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge, an
important estuary, wetland area and bird migration route.
The Refuge was established in 1998 in an effort to restore
coaster brook trout, a native trout that spawns in Whittlesey
Creek and spends its adult life in Lake Superior. This is one
of 12 fresh water estuaries, known as the “String of Pearls,”
that exist along the Lake Superior shoreline in this area.
The refuge has been designated a Globally Important Bird
Area by the American Bird Conservancy and provides
environmental education opportunities via the Northern
Great Lakes Visitor Center. The six mile drive to Washburn
parallels the shoreline of the Chequamegon Bay and crosses
numerous streams that flow from the highlands above.
2 CITY OF WASHBURN
KIOSK LOCATION: Thompson’s West End Park
The historic City of Washburn is situated on the shore of
Lake Superior and is the county seat as well as home of
the Washburn Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet
National Forest. Washburn was a “boom town” from 1880
into the 1920’s where brownstone was quarried and shipped
all over the country. The county courthouse is one of three
brownstone buildings on the National Historic Register, along
with the Washburn Historical Museum and Cultural Center.
There is also a Historic District that includes the “DuPont
Row” houses, which were built by the DuPont Company for
employees who worked just south of town at the largest
dynamite plant in the world during World War I.
Visitors can enjoy a 1.5 mile walking trail along the Lake
Superior shoreline with scenic views and sand beaches
along the way with interpretive signage about the lumber
and tourism history. The walking trail follows the Historic
Maritime Trail where many artifacts from shipwrecks can be
viewed underwater. The city is punctuated by two beautiful
lakefront campgrounds – Thompson’s West End Park on one
end of town with a sand beach, artesian well and boat launch,
and Memorial Park on the east, offering views of and access
to the lake via a stairway.
Washburn has a strong arts community and is home to many
shops, galleries and restaurants as well as some pubs offering
live music and a performing arts theater.
3 TOWN OF BAYVIEW*
KIOSK LOCATION: Bayview Beach Park
Leaving Washburn and traveling the twelve miles north to
the City of Bayfield, the visitor drives through gently rolling
open fields with a mixed hardwood backdrop which gives
way to pine and cedar forests. Within the first mile out of
Washburn is the Houghton Falls State Natural Area where
you’ll encounter beautiful gorges, waterfalls and glens. Large
fields of lupine bloom along the Byway in late spring.
A bit further along Hwy 13 you’ll see another estuary where
the Onion and Sioux rivers merge into Lake Superior. This
is where the sand beaches along the Town of Bayview’s
1.5 mile shoreline give a clear view of Madeline Island, the
largest of the Apostle Islands.
Traveling north, scenic views start to become visible through
the wooded shoreline and are a reminder that the great lake
“Gitche Gumee” is still nearby.
4 TOWN OF BAYFIELD
KIOSK LOCATION: Salmo Trail
The Town of Bayfield is “L-shaped” so you’ll drive through
two separate sections. Entering the section north of Bayview,
the traveler is greeted by a magnificent vista of Lake
Superior and the Apostle Islands as the Byway climbs into
the hills of Bayfield and hugs the shore of Lake Superior.
Ski Hill Road leads to the Mt. Ashwabay Ski and Recreation
Area with both downhill and cross-country skiing in the
winter and mountain bike trails in the summer. It is also the
summer home of Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua where
both local and national acts perform under a 950-seat
canvas tent. The local “Blue Canvas Orchestra” shows offer
a glimpse into the history and culture of the area through
original songs and visual images that will leave an imprint on
your heart.
The rolling hills near the big lake offer a unique microclimate
which is conducive to growing fruit, so watch for signs
directing you to over a dozen orchards and fruit farms in the
area. Bayfield is the “Berry Capital of Wisconsin,” boasting
the state’s largest raspberry producer and the largest
organic blueberry crop. Bayfield also has the widest (and
best) variety of apples in Wisconsin!
Historic sites in this area include the Les Voigt State Fish
Hatchery (another locally quarried brownstone structure)
as well as the Salmo Trail with historic and environmental
interpretive signage along its route, leading to a sand beach.
The northern section of the Town of Bayfield (located
between Red Cliff and Cornucopia/Town of Bell) has the best
access for kayaks to the mainland sea caves at Meyers Beach,
which is part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and
Gaylord Nelson Wilderness Area. During the winter months
these caves are transformed into a winter wonderland, which
become accessible occasionally when the conditions allow a
hike across frozen Lake Superior. There is also a hiking trail
on the cliffs above the shoreline where you can view the
caves from above.
Parts of the County Forest in this area are actively logged
and managed as an important part of the local economy.
5 CITY OF BAYFIELD
KIOSK LOCATION: East Dock Park
Descending the hill into downtown Bayfield, a breathtaking
view of Lake Superior welcomes you. The smallest city in
Wisconsin, Bayfield has a population of just 487. It has been
named, not once but twice, as the “Best Little Town in the
Midwest” by the Chicago Tribune. It is home to the annual
Bayfield Apple Festival (starting the first Friday in October)
which is recognized as one of the best fall harvest festivals in
the nation.
The city’s historic district covers most of the downtown
area and features architecture ranging from quaint cottages
to magnificent Victorian homes. Guided and self-guided
walking tours give visitors the chance to hear colorful stories
from the past, sometimes told by costumed characters.
In addition to its well-preserved architecture, Bayfield is the
“Gateway to the Apostle Islands” and is known worldwide
as a premiere sailing and kayaking destination. The
headquarters of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is
located in a historic brownstone building. The visitor center
provides fascinating information about the islands and the
lighthouses, which together comprise the largest single
collection of lighthouses in the nation. Watch the video to
find out more about this special place.
The islands can be accessed via cruise boat, sailing or power
boat charter, kayak, or a ferry to Madeline Island, which is
the only island with year-round residents and the only one
of the 22 islands that is not a part of the National Lakeshore.
Downtown Bayfield is filled with many shops and galleries as
well as a Heritage Museum and a Maritime Museum. Pick up
some fresh or smoked fish from a commercial fishery for a
taste of Lake Superior or enjoy local flavors at one of the area
restaurants. If you’re brave, try the whitefish livers – they’re a
local specialty!
Walk the Brownstone Trail along an old railroad grade or
take the Gil Larson Nature Trail (part of the Big Ravine Trail
System) which starts by a historic apple shed, continues
under a beautiful old iron bridge and ends at a small waterfall.
Learn the history of Bayfield by taking the Waterfront Walk
along the shore with informational signage along the way.
6 RED CLIFF TRIBE
OF LAKE SUPERIOR CHIPPEWA
KIOSK LOCATION: Frog Bay Tribal National Park
Just north of Bayfield, Red Cliff is home to the Red Cliff Band
of Lake Superior Chippewa and offers visitors a variety of
unique sites and experiences, including Legendary Waters
Resort & Casino which includes many displays about the
history and culture of the native Anishinaabe people. There is
excellent RV camping and a marina which offers lockers and
shower facilities in the resort.
The marina provides a convenient gateway to the Apostle
Islands for boaters and kayakers. Scenic sandstone cliffs
characterize the shoreline along with large wetland sloughs
at the sandy mouths of pristine rivers and streams. Red Cliff
is also the home of the first Tribal National Park at Frog Bay.
A beautiful hiking trail, boardwalk and footbridges lead you
through primordial boreal forest to a beautiful sandy beach
offering a view of 5 of the Apostle Islands.
Another treasure is Point De Tour, a rustic campground near
the water’s edge on the northern-most tip of the peninsula
which is connected to miles of trails for hikers and bikers
to explore.
Red Cliff is also home to the only health clinic on the Byway.
A newly constructed 38,500 square foot community medical
clinic provides medical, pharmacy, optical and dental services
to members of the Tribe as well as the general public.
Experience traditional Chippewa culture during Red Cliff’s
annual Pow Wow or during Cultural Days. A number of
murals located in buildings throughout the reservation also
highlight the traditional Chippewa way of life. Red Cliff also
manages a fish hatchery, which is open for public tours.
7 TOWN OF RUSSELL
KIOSK LOCATION: Little Sand Bay Campground
Heading out of Red Cliff and around the tip of the peninsula,
the Byway passes through farm fields interspersed with
forested areas where logging has been and continues to be
an important part of the local economy. County Hwy. K takes
you to Little Sand Bay, where the Town of Russell operates a
campground and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has
visitor information and a historic fishery with tours available
seasonally. There is also a swimming beach, marina and kayak
launch at the site.
8 TOWN OF BELL (CORNUCOPIA)
KIOSK LOCATION: Bell Marina
Just past Meyers Beach Road (see “Town of Bayfield/northern
section”), the view opens up and the hills of northeast
Minnesota are visible in the distance. The Byway then makes
a steep descent into Cornucopia, Wisconsin’s northernmost
town. The harbor provides a protected port for commercial
fishing vessels and pleasure craft. Fill your water bottles at
the artesian well near the beach and take some time to visit
the Green Shed Museum which offers a peek at the last 100
years of life on the rugged South Shore of Lake Superior. You
will find boat charters, a fishery with fresh and smoked fish,
shops, galleries and even lodging at the marina.

Just across the street is the downtown area with a kayak
outfitter, restaurants, more lodging and a historic general
store that has a little bit of everything - just like in the “old
days,” but with a modern flair. Just off the Byway you can
visit two popular waterfalls: Siskiwit Falls and Lost Creek
Falls. West of Cornucopia you will find the Lost Creek Bog
State Natural Area. Lost Creek Bog forms an estuary at the
mouths of three small creeks (Lost Creek 1, 2, and 3) where
they empty into Lake Superior at Siskiwit Bay. Several rare
plants and animals have been observed here. Migratory
waterfowl and other water birds frequent the site.
9 TOWN OF CLOVER (HERBSTER)
KIOSK LOCATION: Intersection of Hwy. 13 and Bark Point Road
The Town of Clover operates a popular campground on
the shore of Lake Superior – right next to the sand beach.
Bark Bay Road leads to the pristine Bark Bay Slough State
Natural Area where you can kayak or canoe amidst the
wildlife and see rare species of flora and fauna. Herbster’s
annual spring Smelt Fry is held in a historic log gymnasium
built in the 1930’s and Herbster Days celebrates summer in
early August.
10 TOWN OF PORT WING*
KIOSK LOCATION: On Hwy. 13 near Johnson’s Store
The small community of Port Wing has two historic
churches and a restored saloon, all of which have been
converted into art galleries. Port Wing Heritage Hall
showcases the commercial fishing, logging and sandstone
mining history of the area. Quarry Point and Big Pete
Boreal State Natural Areas invite exploration as does Twin
Falls, which is an easy hike. Enjoy pristine public beaches
and walk on the pier; if you don’t catch your own, you
can buy some locally caught Lake Superior fish - fresh or
smoked - right in town. A highlight of a visit in the late
summer is the “Labor Day Fish Boil” and “Lions Club
Fall Festival.”
11 TOWN OF ORIENTA
KIOSK LOCATION: Scenic pull-out on Hwy. 13
Take advantage of the scenic pull-out (seasonal) that
provides access to great views including a 20-mile stretch
across Lake Superior to Knife River and Two Harbors
in Minnesota.
Four miles west of Port Wing just south of the Byway are
the Orienta Falls and the Iron River Brownstone Quarry.
Orienta Falls is located on the former site of the Lake
Superior Power Company Dam. Just below Orienta Falls is
the Iron River Brownstone Quarry which began operation
in 1893 and continued for many years. Both are situated
on nearly 1,000 acres of public land along the Iron River.
A second scenic pull-out (seasonal) just west of the Iron
River offers another vista of Lake Superior.
12 TOWN OF CLOVERLAND
KIOSK LOCATION: Town Hall
The Brule River Boreal Forest State Natural Area teems
with deer, eagles and the occasional fox, wolf or bear.
Signs point to the road leading to the mouth of the Brule
River. There is a large sand beach where the river meets
Lake Superior. This world-famous trout stream has been
a popular destination for U.S. Presidents and has come to
be known as the “River of Presidents.” West of the State
Natural Area is an area of productive farmland with many
dairy and beef farms along the way. Just south of the
Byway are many canoe landings and fishing spots along
with a State Campground.
