PROJECT FEATURE Hasiru Dala
In 2014, Wipro Cares partnered with Hasiru Dala and added solid waste management
to its Environment domain. The objective of this partnership is to enhance and upgrade
waste pickers' skills for innovation in waste management services and to increase waste
pickers' access to social and health security measures provided by state and other
institutions.
It is estimated that each day, 600 - 800 tons of waste are diverted from landfills by the
informal sector (waste pickers) in Bangalore, saving the city municipality a minimum of
13 - 15 lakhs per day. However there is a need to recognize the contribution of waste
pickers and improve their image in society by providing them with social security
benefits, education and skill up gradation. Hasiru Dala's mission is to create recognition
for the contribution of waste pickers in diverting waste from landfills, recycling resources
and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, thereby identifying them as 'green-workers'
and improving their image in society; to secure the benefits of social security, improved
working conditions and continued access to waste for waste pickers; and to provide
opportunities for the children of waste pickers to pursue further education.
