What is Discovery?

The Discovery Series is offered through the Linden Avenue Home & School Association. Our

goal is to bring a variety of after-school learning opportunities to our children. All classes

are open to all Glen Ridge residents grades Pre-K through 2. Preference will be given to

Linden students and their siblings in instances where enrollment is limited.

What time should my child come to their Fall Discovery Classes?

Students Dismissed at 3:00 - Students should enter the building with a parent or

caregiver at 3:25 for their 3:30 classes. Discovery teachers will pick students up at

the main lobby at 3:30. Students will be dismissed at 4:15 out of the main lobby doors

after classes have ended.

Aftercare Students – Students registered to attend Aftercare at Linden Avenue

School will be escorted to the gym and will be picked up by their Discovery teacher.

Students attending aftercare will be dismissed to an aftercare staff member at the

end of their class.

If you need Aftercare services for your child, please contact Raven Chaney at RChaney@glenridge.org. Please inform aftercare staff that your child(ren) will be

attending Discovery classes (please indicate specific days and classes) so this

information can be noted on their daily attendance sheets to ensure that students get

to their class at the correct day and time. Please note that there will be a specific

question on the Discovery Registration to indicate if your will be attending Aftercare

so that the Discovery team has this information for their records too. If this is not

noted at the time of registration, the Discovery Team will assume your child is

being dropped off by a parent or caregiver.

At a Glance: Discovery Drop-off and Pick-Up

Escort your child to the main lobby of Linden Avenue School at 3:25 (5 minutes before

Discovery classes are scheduled to begin). Students will be met in the lobby by their

Discovery teacher and walked to their Discovery classroom. At 4:15, the conclusion of each

of the classes, Discovery teachers will dismiss their students at the front door.

The front doors will not be opened until that time. Prompt pick-up is required.

Please bring your child to the front lobby of the

school at 3:25 (5 minutes before the class) and wait

for the Discovery teacher to escort your child to the

assigned classroom.

Discovery teachers will dismiss students at the

front door at the conclusion

of their classes at 4:15 PM.

The front doors will not be opened until that time.

Discovery teachers will escort Aftercare students back to an Aftercare staff member at the

conclusion of their Discovery class.

How long are classes?

All classes are 45 minutes and run from 3:30 to 4:15.

What if there is a cancellation or school closes early?

Discovery is in session when school is in session. If school is cancelled or there is an

unscheduled early closing, Discovery classes will not be held. If a class is cancelled, a

make-up class will be scheduled and you will be notified by the Discovery teacher or the

Discovery co-chairs. The Discovery program is only obligated to make up one class per

session. Additional classes cancelled due to emergency closings are not required to be made

up. The Linden Avenue School Discovery webpage will post updated information on

rescheduled class dates. Discovery’s Policy Related to Student Participation and Behavior:

Discovery classes should be thoroughly enjoyable to all involved. If any behavior or

participation concerns do arise during the course of the class, parents will be contacted to

review the issue(s). We always ask that you discuss the matter with your child to help us

improve and change the behavior so that all students and teachers enjoy their Discovery

experience. If an issue persists, student involvement in the class may be reviewed. Please

know in advance that our adherence to this policy is in the best interest of all participants.

PLEASE REMEMBER:

1. Be on time for drop-off and pick-up.

2. Do not leave your child unattended on the playground or the school lobby.

3. You are responsible for your child until the Discovery class begins.

4. Please help us keep the hallways clean. Give your child a snack prior to entering the

building. Food and drinks are not allowed in the classrooms.

5. The Discovery teachers are responsible for your child during the class. In case of

emergency, Discovery teachers are instructed to call 911 immediately. Please note

that there is no school nurse on duty during Discovery classes.

6. Please encourage your child to use the bathroom prior to attending their Discovery

Class.

Special Allergy / Medical Condition Alert Notice:

If your child has any life-threatening allergies or medical conditions, please e-mail the

Discovery Coordinators and speak to the Discovery teacher about any precautions that should

be taken or medication your child might need to have available (such as asthma inhaler or epi-

pen). This also must be noted on the WUFOO registration.

Monday Discovery Classes

Yoga Grades: K, 1, 2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Laugh, play, balance and breathe! Join Miss Sheri, Founder of Little Hands Connected and Certified

Yoga Instructor to explore the world of Children’s Yoga. Through fun interactive games, children will

learn poses, body awareness, connecting movement with breath, relaxation and positive thinking. Get

ready for balloons, dancing, freeze yoga and more as we find the perfect balance between being

active & silly and calm & connected! Bring your mat and a smile!*

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Sheri Peake is a Linden mom and certified Yoga Instructor.

Chef it Up: Holiday Appetizers Grades: PK, K, 1, 2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

We will make some fun holiday appetizers in each weekly class. Classes will be made age appropriate

for all levels of cooking. On the menu over the course of your program we will be making Mini Italian

Wreaths (mozzarella, cherry tomatoes & fresh basil drizzled with olive oil); Sugared Fruit Trees;

Antipasto Cups and much, much more!

This class is limited to 18 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Teachers from Chef It Up

Toyology Grades: PK, K, 1, 2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30-4:15 Cost: $145.00

Turn recycled items into exciting hands-on science projects that young learners can build themselves

- using while learning basic principles of gravity, inertia, balance, and energy. Have fun creating

Surface Tension Speed Boats, Optical Illusion Friction Flipper, Ping Pong Poppers and much, much

more. This class incorporates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts.

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Jen Lange, Teacher at Rock Paper Scissors and Montclair State Gifted &

Talented Summer Program.

Unicorn Tails and Dragon Scales-Bringing Mythical Creatures to Life Grades: PK, K, 1, 2 7 Weeks Times: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Join us for a great adventure of the imagination, as we travel around the world to meet and celebrate

many fantastic creatures that evolved from the traditions, folklore, and legends of various cultures!

Graceful unicorns, fierce dragons, the mysterious Yeti of snowy mountains, the fiery Phoenix bird,

and the shadowy Loch Ness Monster of Scotland, are some of the fabulous beasts we will discover on

our journey. Each week, we will explore the magical powers of a new creature, and create a different

kind of puppet that expresses its unique characteristics. The variety of puppets will include hand

puppets, stick puppets, and finger puppets - all which can inspire additional imaginative play at home!

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Amy German, a former Forest Avenue Instructional Aide and art educator, has

taught a wide range of school and family programs at many New York City museums, including

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Staten Island Children's

Museum.

Tuesday Discovery Classes

LEGO Club Grades: PK,K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Are you a LEGO enthusiast who could spend hours and hours every day engrossed with creative

building? This class is for you! Let your imagination run wild with thousands of LEGOS! Build

engineer-designed projects such as boats, bridges, mazes and motorized cars, and use special pieces

to create your own unique design! Explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO building

systems. This is an ideal way to get your young builder thinking and creating while using fundamentals

of math, science and engineering!

Each class is limited to 14 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Helene Maia, First Grade Teacher, Linden Avenue School

STEM Labs II (Participation in STEM Labs 1 ins not a pre-requisite)

Grades: PK,K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Students will be challenged to think analytically, assess new situations, and solve real-world problems.

Learn by doing, measuring, and designing, and then reflect upon it. Students will design their own

Parachutes, Ziplines, Marble Runs and much much, more. This class incorporates STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts.

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Jen Lange, Teacher at Rock Paper Scissors and Montclair State Gifted &

Talented Summer Program.

Go Noodle … Get Ready to Dance and Move! Grades: PK,K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

A fun indoor lunch recess activity is now being offered at Discovery. GO NOODLE is a fun and

upbeat exercise through dance program. Come join the fun as we dance to our favorites to beat

the winter blues. We will rock it out to songs such as Happy, What Makes You Beautiful and Pop

See Ko. Each song is kid friendly and tested and the dance moves are shown on the easy to follow

along video. No previous dance lessons are required, just a smile and a song in your heart!

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Jodie Schnack, Kindergarten Teacher, Linden Avenue School

Linden Artists Grades: PK,K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

In this crafty class each week we will create a new piece of art that the students will be able to

take home! Students will get to paint with acrylic and watercolors and explore different painting

techniques!

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. (Please note that this class will not be held on Feb. 10th. The class will be rescheduled at the end of the Winter Session.)

Wednesday Discovery Classes

Minecraft Fun Grades: K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Attention all Minecrafters! Come join us on a 7 week adventure of Minecraft activities. We will

venture through the world of Minecraft through games, puzzles, crafts, and story maps! Girls and

boys should come and join in the fun!

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Helene Maia, First Grade Teacher, Linden Avenue School

Beginner Hip-Hop Grades: PK,K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Learn cool choreography for "Uptown Funk" with Bruno Mars complete with hat tricks. Performance

will be held the last day of class. Required attire: sneakers and a smile!

This class is limited to 14 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Leslie Tierney, a dance instructor who has been teaching Glen Ridge Students dance

for over 15 years.

Do It Yourself Jewelry Grades: K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Create beautiful things out of the simplest objects. We’ll recycle old things, turn trash into treasure

and even learn some science along the way. Who says you can’t be beautiful AND smart!

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Theresa Messineo, Second Grade Teacher, Linden Avenue School

Kids Sports! Grades: PK,K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

BRR! The coldness is here! Have your child stay warm and active in Kidsports. This discovery class will

help your child build self-esteem, confidence, and become stronger. Every two weeks your child will

engage in a new sport!

Thursday Discovery Classes

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Grades: PK,K, 1, 2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Are you a Harry Potter fan? If you are, come join the fun! In this class make wands, play Quidditch

with your classmates, get sorted into one of the four houses and make a scarf from the house you are

in! Learn to make "spells" and fall in love with the Harry Potter series!

This class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Vicky Garcia, Instructional Aide, Linden Avenue School

Little Dragons I & II

Grades: PK,K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

Learn the basics of Tae Kwon Do, one of the most popular forms of martial arts, from one of our

most popular instructors! This class is perfect for students who have no previous experience with

this form of martial arts, or for those who don’t feel ready for the next level but would like to

continue their studies.

ACTING OUT! Grades: K,1,2 7 Weeks Time: 3:30 to 4:15 Cost: $145.00

In this class students will play creative theatre games~ which help develop quick thinking, imagination,

role-play, focus and confidence! Each week we will play games within a weekly theme like; In Outer

Space, Jungle Boogie, Candy Land, At the Beach, Princess& Pirates and many more. Students will also

learn how to introduce themselves in front of a group and share a little about themselves in a fun

supportive environment.

Each class is limited to 12 students and registration will be taken in the order received. Instructor: Heather Ballantyne, a Linden Mom, is a professional actor and has been teaching

and coaching kids in acting, comedy improv and auditioning for over 5 years. Through theatre

games she believes children can be creative and express themselves in a supportive environment
