The Y is a cause-driven organization focused on three key areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We believe a strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. We strengthen the foundations of community. We work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

When you participate at the Y, you become part of something bigger. You become part of a cause — a cause dedicated to building a better community and a better us.

Together, we are connecting people of every age and walk of life through programs that address critical needs, such as school readiness, water safety, healthy living and safe spaces after school. Every day, the Y's presence is seen and felt by more than 7,000 people in neighborhoods across Anaheim, Cypress, Stanton and La Palma.

From everyone on the YMCA staff, we thank you for being an important part of our impact.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYWorking with our community to give back.

Gabriela Guzman, Parent Volunteer“I liked the experience a lot! It was great to see all volunteers work together to build this park in one day. My mother and I got to create memories of assembling equipment and planting trees for my son and others to enjoy. It just reopened not too long ago and it’s a great feeling to see that the park is full of families and children enjoying their time there.”

In September, Willow Park in Anaheim was transformed into a kid-designed play space in less than eight hours with the help of close to 300 volunteers from the City of Anaheim, Anaheim Family YMCA, Disney and KaBOOM!. With this new addition to the neighborhood, 400 kids now have more opportunities to get the balanced and active play they need to thrive.

The Y is for Social Responsibility. BUILDING CONFIDENCE

According to the U.S. Department of Education, — All young people should be prepared to think deeply and to think well so that they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow. But, right now, not enough of our youth have access to quality STEM learning opportunities and too few students see these subjects as possible careers. In response, the Y is creating opportunities for youth to explore STEM and develop decision-making, problem-solving and analytical skills.

Staff from Anaheim Achieves received training on the Science Action Club curriculum from the California Academy of Sciences. They are excited to be teaching "Cloud Quest" to over 1200 5th - 8th grade students here in Anaheim.

Caitlin Jelensky, 4th year Y&G Participant

"Y&G is such an amazing program! Not only have I made life-long friendships and learned so much, but I have also personally grown from this program. When I first started Y&G, I was a very shy freshman who only talked to the people that I knew and wouldn’t open up to others. However, over time, I began to open up more and now I am comfortable talking in front of a group of people that I don’t know. It is such a fun and exciting way to learn about government because you are able to act out those roles and experience how everything really operates.

Being a part of Y&G and the Supreme Court program has been such a great experience! I would recommend it to anyone!"

Jamie Ang Lee, YMCA Art Teacher at Stanton Central Park

“My art experience began in Ryman Arts, a high school program for students who like art and wish to hone in on it. I am a current student at California State University of Fullerton, majoring in Illustration. Teaching Art to youth has helped me grow as a person. My ongoing journey helps me give back to the community in so many ways. My trip to Mexico for an art workshop in a low income community, working as a Teaching Assistant at Ryman Arts, and working with the art classes at Anaheim Family YMCA has taught me patience and my love for helping other aspiring artists. It is an amazing and humbling experience to see the potential and talents of these students. I am glad to learn that I can teach others and help them grow as artists and individuals.”

CONNECTING AS A FAMILY

Ricardo Palacios, Camp Miehana volunteer, who attended with his niece, Alyssa Vasquez,13 and nephew, Isaiah Robertson, 7

"As a family, we deepened our appreciation for one another, and learned how to incorporate the YMCA Four Pillars of Character: respect, honesty, responsibility and caring into our daily lives. Both campers and volunteers are able to utilize the rag and leather goal-setting programs to develop skills and take-on challenges to improve ourselves and our character each and every year."

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

AFTER SCHOOL FOOD PROGRAM

HEAL: Healthy Eating Active Living

Improving people's health and well-being.

The After School Food Program provides children with nutrition so they can be healthy, succeed in school and are not at risk of going hungry.

The after school food program was created to fill the late afternoon hunger gap by providing healthy meals for students in the Anaheim Achieves after school program. Data revealed that 85% of the students in the Anaheim Elementary City School District are provided with a free or reduced price lunch, and 7% self-report insufficient food at home to meet their basic needs.

Thanks to our partnership with the Anaheim Elementary School District and Anaheim Union High School District, we are ensuring that over 2,200 children in our after school programs have access to healthy meals during out-of-school time, when they need them most.

The Anaheim Achieves youth, in partner with Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) had the opportunity to collaborate in the Safe Routes to School project. Safe Routes to School is a movement to create safe, convenient and fun opportunities for students to walk and bicycle to and from school (Safe Routes to School National Partnership). Walking to/from school is one of the easiest ways to increase daily physical activity, and along with healthy eating, maintain a healthy weight.

Youth in our Anaheim Achieves program are able to develop their leadership, see measurable outcomes and have the opportunity to present to key stakeholders in the community.

PROVIDING CHILDREN WITH NUTRITION TO SUCCEED AND BE HEALTHY

CREATING SAFE OPPORTUNITIES
