Perspectives...Addressing LGBTQ Health Care Disparities in the Latino Population –

Promoting Clinical Excellence and Diversity within the Physician Workforce

Latinos in the United States face significant obstacles in accessing and navigating the American health care system, leading to poor outcomes in many acute and chronic diseases. Our heterogeneity, with wide variations in self-defined race, regional cultural norms and socioeconomic status,

has lead to minority subgroups within the Latino social structure that face additional discrimination due to their perceived race, immigration status and sexual orientation. For example, the national rate of HIV amongst African-American and Latino men is 25%, while that of African-American and

LMSA Midwest Volume IX, Issue II 9 audiences of high school, undergraduate and medical students. Workshops for high school students included a health care team panel with various health care professionals, a tour of the anatomy lab at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, and a motivating talk on how to get the most out of experiences in pre-medical education. Undergraduate students attended workshops that provided information on the application process to medical school, discussed osteopathic medicine and how to succeed in medical school. Medical student workshops spanned a variety of topics from clinically relevant matters such as the importance of shared language in primary care visits and cultural competency in transplantation to health care delivery and health policy including an update on the Affordable Care Act, sharing of experience doing orthopedic mission work in other countries, and a medical school’s experience of accepting DREAMer students. Finally, the conference incorporated hands-on suturing and endoscopy workshops. We are extremely thankful for the AGA and ASGE who hosted the two endoscopy workshops in which students learned how to perform an endoscopy using real endoscopes on pig stomachs!

In the afternoon, there was also an exhibitor fair with medical schools, residency programs, and hospitals reached out to students. The research symposium this year was a great success with submission of approximately twenty poster presentations. Dinner on Saturday was held at Reza’s Restaurant, a Mediterranean restaurant close in location to the conference site. Many attended the dinner and enjoyed networking, relaxing, and eating a great meal at the end of the day.

On Sunday, the community service event took place at St. Pius Church in the Pilsen

neighborhood of Chicago. A health fair and blood drive was held, where approximately 50 students volunteered. Community members who had recently attended mass or were at the church for other social events attended the health fair and received a health screening. In addition, a blood drive held by Heartland Blood Centers received a steady flow of donators throughout the day.

• April 25-27, 2014 – We will be co-hosting with the UT Houston Medical School the LMSA National Conference, which will bring over 400 Latino medical students from across the nation to the TMC and we will be hosting various workshops to better develop their skills.

University of Texas Medical School at Houston• Jan. 17, 2014 – LMSA chapter of UT Houston hosted a lunch lecture by Dr. Jorge

Romaguera, the Deputy Chairman of the Lymphoma/Myeloma Department at MD Anderson. Dr. Romaguera talked to the students about his background growing up and attending medical school in Puerto Rico. He talked about what students can expect in a field that has become so interdisciplinary and how to excel as Hispanic physicians.

• Feb. 1, 2014 – The LMSA chapter of UTHSC volunteered at the “Creating Change” National Conference that took place in Houston. The “Creating Change” is an important conference that helps raise awareness for LGBGT communities. Members of the UT Houston LMSA chapter

went as volunteers to monitor talks that ranged from healthcare to political issues.

Medical Students at the Houston Hispanic Forum

LMSA Southwest

by Joaquin Villegas, UT-HSC at Houston (MSII)

The medical students at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston woke up early on February 8th, 2014 to help set up a booth at the George R. Brown Convention Center. This booth was part of a local effort by the city of Houston, TX to help educate the rising Hispanic

community about the importance of achieving high educational goals. Amid the many booths for undergraduates schools and financial aid seminars, the Latino Medical

Student Association stood by and helped answer questions of many interested Hispanic pre-medical students that had questions about the application process or how to better prepare their applications for the upcoming application cycle.

Some of the students that wandered by the booth, especially those who were still in high school, were intimidated at first by the medical students in white coats. However, their fears soon dissipated once they realized we were part of their community and were even aware about the many challenges that are pervasive specifically for Hispanic students – such as high education costs or having to go far away from your family for school.

Overall, the event was a success in helping young Hispanic high school and undergraduate students realize that medicine is a highly rewarding field that is no longer out of reach for the Hispanic community.

Our regional conference “Hablamos Español: Understanding the Diversity behind one Language” was held Feb. 7th-9th at the UNC School of Medicine Friday Center, which was

a huge success. Friday events for high school students included a welcome and keynote address from Dr. Andrew Behnke of NC State as well as a student panel and presentations from local colleges and universities, and workshops including admissions test prep and financial aid continued on through Saturday. Saturday programming for premedical and medical students began with a very engaging keynote address from Dr. James H. Johnson and included workshops and panels throughout the day that included hands-on simulation labs as well as multiple Latino health issues including LGBTQ concerns, Latina women in medicine, geriatric populations, a poster competition, a residency, med school, and vendor expo, and other workshops.

The evening finished with a duke dinner gala with over 140 attendees from various Duke departments as well as students, faculty, and residents. A keynote address was given by Duke Dean Nancy Andrews (with a welcome in English and Spanish! Bless her!). Our conference culminated on Sunday with a community service project: a community screening health fair at Iglesia Episcopal El Buen Pastor in Durham; this also included an address from Dr. Rosemary Fernandez Stein. Overall more than 100 attendees came to the conference this year and feedback has been pouring in about what an educational and impactful experience it was for attendees.

Regional UpdatesWhat’s happening around the Southeast!• We also started a regional community service award called Manos Cariñosas, which is given each

year to an outstanding member of the Latino community who has demonstrated a long-standing service towards health equity, advocacy, and improvement and also is a member of the hosting institution for that year’s conference. Our first ever recipient was Rebecca Reyes, coordinator of the Latino Health Project at Duke University SOM, and she was presented with the award at our Duke dinner gala in February.

• Our 2015 regional conference will be taking place at San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Puerto Rico.

• We have our first ever MedDay event coming up at Miami Dade Honors College on Saturday

March 15th in conjunction with our premed organization, LMSA PLUS. It is geared toward premedical students in the Southeast Region, though anyone is welcome. It will

include various workshops and panels on medical school admissions, life as a medical student, test prep, and hands on workshops. If you would like attend or have any questions please e-mail our undergraduate representative, Maria Montero, at [email protected].

• Our annual regional scholarship winner this year, award of $500, is Oscar Alejandro Garcia from San Juan Bautista School of medicine in Puerto Rico. He is of Mexican descent and is currently an MS2 at SJB where he has already demonstrated a strong commitment to service through organizations including Fundación Infantil Ronald McDonald, volunteering as a mentor at Escuela República de Costa Rica High School in Caguas, PR, working to improve oral health, and being involved in many other organizations during his time as a medical student. He currently plans to apply to residency in Pediatrics and continue working with underserved Latino communities throughout his career.

• We are continuing to work with mentorship organizations to form a larger mentor network throughout the southeast region.

LMSA Westby TC Robbins and Rene Garcia - UCSD School of Medicine

On Saturday, November 9, 2013, UCSD medical students, pharmacy students, undergraduates, interpreters, physicians and pharmacists traveled over 50 miles to the farms outside of Fallbrook, CA to increase access to health services for one of the most underserved and

marginalized populations in San Diego county: migrant farmworkers.  The health fair was organized by the Border Health Project, a student-run organization at UCSD’s School of Medicine.

The Border Health Project was founded in 2006 under the principal that everyone deserves access to basic health services and resources.  Although the group had been inactive in recent years, second-year medical students Rene Garcia and TC Robbins collaborated with volunteer faculty member Dr. Miguel Casillas, original BHP founder Dr. Shirin Alonzo, pharmacist Dr. Eduardo Fricovksy, and staff members and health educators from Vista Community Clinic, to revive the project this fall.

Migrant workers living in San Diego face many challenges in accessing medical care, including lack of transportation, financial barriers, and fear of deportation.  On November 9, 58 workers and their family members attended the BHP health fair to be screened for high blood glucose, cholesterol, BMI and blood pressure.  The workers were then guided to health education tables to learn more from medical students about topics that were personally relevant to them, including hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, occupational health, and sexual health.

Patients who were identified as “high-risk” based on their screening values or acute problems were seen by volunteer doctors, and were then referred to Vista Community Clinic staff who made them appointments for the following week. The attendees were also given reusable bags with toothbrushes, toothpaste, condoms, mouthwash, deodorant, working gloves, socks, and first-aid kits, in addition to clothing from UCSD’s clothing drive.

Support for the Border Health Project is provided by the PACE Program Underserved Community Grant, PRIME-Health Equity, the UCSD Office of Student Affairs, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, community dentists, and many other donors.  If you are interested in learning more about BHP, please contact [email protected] or [email protected].
