THE ROYAL BALLET (LIVE)presents

Bernstein CentenaryAuditorium

The Royal Ballet celebrates the centenary of Leonard Bernstein’s

birth with a programme from choreographers Wayne McGregor,

Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon.

Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in

America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. He was eclectic

in his sources – drawing on jazz and modernism, the traditions of

Jewish music and the Broadway musical – and many of his scores

are remarkably well suited to dance.

The programme includes two world premieres by Resident

Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher

Wheeldon, marking each artist’s first foray into Bernstein. At the

heart of the programme is the first revival of Artist in Residence

Liam Scarlett’s The Age of Anxiety, created in 2014 to Bernstein’s

soul-searching Second Symphony.

ROYAL OPERA (ENCORE)presents

CarmenAuditorium

Georges Bizet’s Carmen is one of the mostfamous operas in the entire art form with musicsuch as Habanera and the Toreador Songbecoming classics.

The opera’s heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence is given a fresh point ofview in Barrie Kosky’s highly physicalproduction. His Carmen is a far fromtraditional version, incorporating music writtenby Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlesslyfascinating central character.

ToscaAuditorium

From its strident opening chords Puccini’sTosca conjures up a world of politicalinstability and menace.

Jonathan Kent’s production captures thedangerous political turbulence of Rome in1800 as the Chief of Police, Scarpia ruthlesslypursues and tortures enemies of the state. His dark, demonic music contrasts with theexpansive melodies of the idealistic lovers,Tosca and Cavaradossi, who express theirpassion in sublime arias, including Vissi d’arteand E lucevan le stelle.
