VOICE

Winter 2017

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Children’s Home Network is celebrating 125 years of service to children and families who need us most, in the Tampa Bay region. It is only with the support of friends like you that we have been able to grow from our humble beginnings as an orphanage to a community-wide resource that impacts the lives of so many. Thank you for helping us continue the legacy of Children’s Home Network and our critical mission of improving lives and changing life stories.

Because of your generosity over the past year, Children’s Home Network was able to touch the lives of nearly 25,000 children and adults. But even with services to assist all of these people, there are so many that still need our help.

These children and families rely on Children’s Home Network and friends like you to help provide the crucial services that they need, and we believe every child and parent deserves. Please consider making a special gift in honor of our 125 year anniversary and continue to help children enjoy the support of a loving family and help families remain strong. Learn more about our mission and joining in our celebration on page 4.

New Look...Same Great Service The Children’s Home is now Children’s Home NetworkAs we welcome in the New Year and our 125th year of service, we are pleased to share some important news about our organization’s evolution.

As of January 27, 2016, we are changing our name to Children’s Home Network. The name change is a result of an extensive rebranding effort designed to mirror the success and transformation of our organization.

In addition to the new name, Children’s Home Network also has a refreshing new look. While we are sad to say goodbye to “Charlie” and the old logo, we’re even more excited to bring in the new. The new Children’s Home Network logo represents change, growth and a brighter tomorrow. The placement of the person as the center of the butterfly reflects our approach, which puts the needs of the individuals we serve first. Children’s Home Network is dedicated to improving lives and changing life stories. To meet today’s needs, we offer innovative programs and services that have a positive impact on children and their families. While our name has changed, Children’s Home Network will continue to provide the same level of excellence and professionalism you have come to know.

We have redesigned our new website, childrenshomenetwork.org, to be focused on those who are looking to obtain information about CHN and the services we provide, as well as though who want to get involved by volunteering, donating, or attending our events. Our phone numbers and street address will remain the same, but our social media has also changed. You can now find us on Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn at Children’s Home Network, and on Twitter and Instagram at ChildrenHomeNet.

As we further emerge into this exciting phase of growth, we would like to take the opportunity to thank our loyal donors, business associates, and lead agencies. Without your ongoing partnership, this exciting evolution of our organization would not be possible.

We are sure that the launch of CHN’s new brand will mark the beginning of a successful new chapter in the growth and impact of our work, and look forward to furthering our mission, in our communities and beyond.

Children’s Home Network story begins only 22 years after the end of the Civil War, in a small frontier village in Florida. When Miss Carrie Hammerly came from Leesburg, Virginia to visit relatives in 1887, she decided to stay and join the approximately 800 residents that lived in Tampa at the time. History tells us that Miss Hammerly began tending to orphaned and abandoned children in 1892. By expanding her home to meet the increasing community need she purchased a large house on Marion Street, thus beginning the legacy of Children’s Home Network. Little did Miss Hammerly know that she would spark an organization that now serves nearly 25,000 children and adults each year. The challenge of running the home led her to create a much more formal structure whereby she deeded the home to trustees and enlisted the help of some very influential Tampa ladies. These women formed the

governing board of directors, which would become the standard for non-profit organizations throughout the country. In 1920, a fire destroyed the home, opening the door to the next chapter of Children’s Home Network’s story. A new home was built by renowned architect, M. Leo Elliott, that was truly groundbreaking at the time. Still standing today at 3302 North Florida Avenue and on the National Registry of Historic Places. Children’s Home Network remained at that location until 1965, when ground was broken on a new 88 acre property provided by the City of Tampa, off of Old Memorial Highway, where we continue to provide residential services with our Kids Village Campus and Adolescents in Motherhood programs. In addition, we provide services at six other locations throughout central Florida.

The Florida Medical Clinic Foundation of Caring strives to support individuals, children and families in need and at risk in Hillsborough County. Children's Home Network's Adolescents in Maternity Program (AIM) has been a grateful recipient of their generous support this past year. The Florida Medical Clinic Foundation of Caring has made it possible for AIM to secure appropriate care and education for all of the new moms. Parenting classes, prenatal care, newborn education has all been supported by this grant.

The inagural Tampa Building to Make Lives Better Golf Tournament, hosted by Pulte Homes at Avila Golf & Country Club, raised $76,350 for Children’s Home Network—exceeding its original goal of $50,000.

Sean Strickler, Division President for Pulte Homes in the West Florida division, said the tournament was a sell out, with 100 players registered over two weeks before the tournament. The proceeds will help fund The Pulte Promise, a program aimed at providing supplemental academic and vocational learning for the boys and girls at the Home.

“The inaugural year of the Building to Make Lives Better Golf Tournament far exceeded our original goal,” says Children’s Home Network CEO Irene Rickus. “We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support Pulte Homes and their sponsors have given and look forward to working with them for years to come on this tournament and other endeavors.”

Adolescents in Motherhood (AIM) Program Spotlight: Maggie’s Story

Building to Make Lives Better (cont.)

Maggie was 5 months pregnant when she came to the Adolescents in Motherhood Maternity Program at Children’s Home Network in the summer of 2016. She and her siblings had been abandoned by their mother in their apartment where they continued to live for several months until all were placed in foster care. Immediately after she arrived at the program, Maggie attended her first prenatal medical appointment and was given childbirth education. She expressed much apprehension and fear due to her pregnancy and foster care status.

Becoming a new mom and being a teen in foster care is challenging, and coming from a harmful environment where there is a lack of a positive and loving role model requires additional support. Through the Maternity Program, Maggie participated in parenting classes and individual counseling in order to adjust to her new situation and the significant neglect by her mother.

Maggie was very receptive to all the program had to offer and participated wherever she could. In October, Maggie earned her GED and passed her driving test. In November, she delivered a healthy baby boy, William, who weighed 7lb 10oz.

Maggie and her son are well on their way to having the happy family that she has hoped for thanks to the support from the Adolescents in Motherhood program offered at Children’s Home Network, Healthy Families and donors who make the program possible.

Children’s Home Network in Tampa is a child and family-centered organization that is positioned to care for struggling families and children seeking the comfort of a loving family. Over the years, Children’s Home Network has helped more than 6,000 children realize their dream of a family, and it has cared for more than 25,000 children in the Tampa Bay community.

“All of us at Pulte Homes are proud and excited to be partnered with Children’s Home Network,” Strickler said. “The enormous effort on the part of generous donors and contributors to this event is moving, and we are pleased to join hands with the entire Tampa community to assist these very deserving at-risk children and families through this incredible charity,” Strickler continued.

At Avila Golf & Country Club, players in the Building To Make Lives Better Golf Tournament experienced the beautiful Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course and received gift bags courtesy of multiple donors, breakfast, lunch, and light refreshments and snacks throughout the tournament day.

Thank you for all of the generous donations we received this holiday season. Your generosity brought joy and happiness to not only the boys and girls at Children’s Home Network, but throughout the Tampa Bay area, and made it possible for us to fill all of our holiday wish lists.

You made Christmas memorable for our children and families! We had a wonderful holiday season at The Children’s Home, thanks to the help of our generous donors, volunteers and staff. Our children were over-joyed to find their Christmas wish lists had been fulfilled when they opened their presents. We were so blessed by an abundance of gifts this year that we were able to pro-vide children with gifts throughout our agency and still share the ex-cess with our community partners throughout Tampa Bay. On December 10, 2016 at the Annual Holiday Open House, the boys and girls shared the joy of the season with the crowd of more

than 375 guests. The children spent weeks preparing for this event and several of our event sponsors, including FIS Global, JP Morgan, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Wetherington Hamilton, P.A. decorated the cottages, helping to being the joy of the holidays to our main campus. Our guests were invited into the cottages for a reception complete with delicious food prepared and served courtesy of Ciccio Restaurant Group. As the children mingled with guests, they were reminded of the continuous love and support they receive year-round.

Thank You For Making the Season BrighterBecause of friends like you, the boys and girls at Children’s Home Network celebrated a Merry Christmas!

Fostering Families Spotlight: Children's Home Network Foster Families Treated to Christmas Party

During the month of December, Children's Home Network held Christmas parties to thank our foster families from Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Osceola Counties.

The events featured buffets of food and gifts for the more than 100 children and families in attendance in Osceola and 250 in attendance in Tampa Bay.

“We wanted to do something special for these families during the holidays and all of our expectations were ex-ceeded," states Adriana Cardona, foster care manager for Children's Home Network.

Santa Claus made a special appearance and handed out the presents to the children, which were donated by local businesses and community members. Every child received presents, adding some extra joy to these families during the holiday season.

“We just wanted to give back to them by giving them a night filled of joy, love and good food with family,” said Cardona.

“The community has come together in appreciation of our foster families who open the doors of their homes to our local children who would otherwise be without a home.”
