Clubwoman

From Vision to Reality − Make it Happen!

GFWC International President Rose Ditto (right) and GFWC President-elect Carlene Garner (left) are in front of the beautifully decorated Christmas tree at our historic GFWC home at 1734 N Street NW in Wash-ington, DC, during a tour of GFWC headquar-ters on November 13th. Shirley’s Scope:

From Vision To Reality — Make it Happen!

What’s Happening with your “Vision of Possibilities”?

Once again the holiday season is upon us, with report writing time quickly following. There’s a chilling thought!! Has your club’s vision

for the 2009 calendar year become a reality? Report time is a good reality check for clubs. Often we have accomplished much more than we realize. Please don’t forget to bundle and mail a copy of all your reports to the State President. They are needed for her report to GFWC.

Your President’s schedule has been very full since last Washington Clubwoman with the GFWC Board of Directors meeting August 27-30 in Kentucky, our State Board & Workshops meeting in Yakima Septem-ber 11-13, the Western States Region meeting in Boise September 24-27, and three District meetings in October. They were all very enjoyable and informative.

Several GFWC-WS members have recently returned from attending the GFWC 2010-2012 Orientation meeting in Washington, DC. It was a very exciting beginning of our work with President-elect Carlene Garner in her administration! Carlene will be the official GFWC guest at our State Convention in Bellevue, April 23-25, 2010. She will become the GFWC International President next June in Omaha, and now is the time to make hotel reservations to attend the International Convention.

It is such an honor and privilege to represent you at these meetings. We hope to find pictures to share with you in this issue to make up for a loss of words to describe the good times, good work and good friends we have in GFWC.

With all best wishes for you in the coming year,

Shirley Phipps, President GFWC-Washington State

Community Improvement Contest

Just a reminder that I am excited and hopeful and full of expectations…..

Over 20 clubs committed in Septem-ber 2008 that they would enter the Community Improvement Contest! Because every club completes some type of project, all you need to do is document this information and fol-low the suggested format recom-mended by GFWC in the manual, under the orange colored Special Projects.

The Action Plan is concise, contest rules are included and the one page cover sheet is easy to fill out. The project covers the period from March 1, 2008 to April 30, 2010, as this contest is for a two year time frame.

Not only are there cash awards for the top 3 winning clubs in Washing-ton, but also cash awards for the GFWC selected clubs!

Club entries are due on March 1, 2010 to:

Inspire and Involve and Inform

We all know how important membership is and that we all need to work on getting and maintaining our member-ship. Have you ever thought about your attitude at meetings or when talking with other women about what you are do-ing? When you are standing in line at the grocery store or vis-iting with a friend don’t complain about the meeting you have to attend. Be excited! State that you can’t wait to hear the ter-rific speaker at the meeting. Talk about how wonderful that project is that your club is working on to help the women’s shelter or other project that you might be working on. Invite them to help on the project. If you are collecting items for your project tell them what kinds of items you need. Sometimes you can get members by getting them involved with a pro-ject. Let them know what great friendships you have made.

What happens at meetings is so important. Make sure meet-ings run smoothly, that everyone feels welcome and that they can participate. Have something fun and or informative at meetings. Get everyone involved in a project. Let them know how they can help. When someone suggests a new project give them a chance to present their idea. Don’t say it will never work or we tried that and didn’t work. Be open to new ideas and don’t be afraid of change. Our world is rapidly changing around us and we must look at new ways of doing things. Ask your members what they would like to see the club do, what is working for them and what needs to be changed. Your attitude at meetings can chase away members (old or new). With the right attitude you will keep and gain members.

Don’t forget to keep members informed, Informed about club events, Informed about GFWC. Don’t assume that everyone knows. Make sure all officers and chairman know what is ex-pected of them. Use a membership book with lots of useful information.

I would like to hear you what you think the benefits of being a member of GFWC are. What are the things you like most about being a member? What has helped you?

Club presidents or membership chairmen please send me the names and addresses of your new members.

Nancy Burdick

GFWC-WS 3rd Vice President/Membership Chairman

GFWC Western States Region, September 25-27

The GFWC Western States Region met in Boise, ID. The WSR meeting included informational meetings, educa-tional workshops, and enjoying the company of mem-bers from ten of the WSR states. The following pic-tures were taken during the optional WSR tours on the 24th and 25th before the meeting.

GFWC Board of Directors Meeting, August 27-30

The GFWC International Board of Director’s meeting was in Lexington, KY.

Shirley, Nancy Jones, Bonnie Walden and Joann Wheeler planned an early arrival to allow time for sightseeing in a rented car. The original Ken-tucky bourbon balls candy shop, a distillery tour (for medicinal purposes!), Daniel Boone’s grave, the state capital building, the home of Mary Lin-coln Todd, and the Kentucky Horse Farm Park and lunch at a noted restaurant were all squeezed in before the opening evening meeting.

Friday morning included group meetings for Region Presidents, State Presidents, Directors of Junior Clubs and GFWC committee members, followed by financial reports and executive com-mittee recommendations. The officer, group and committee reports heard after lunch in-cluded Strategic Planning: Determining GFWC’s Strategic Issues for the Future. Luncheon and dinner speakers’ topics were “Living Stress-Free and Healthy” and “Tapping Into Your Inner Emotional Intelligence”.

Extensive training on using GFWC’s new xcata-lyst membership data base took place Saturday morning and afternoon. Saturday’s luncheon speaker was from the Kentucky Derby Museum and presented a fun “Kentucky Derby Hat His-tory and Fashion Show”. We also attended Sat-urday night’s optional “Kentucky Fun Night”, which none of us wanted to miss!

GFWC 2010 International Convention

June is just around the corner! That means it is Washington State’s time to shine as we host the Installa-tion Events in Omaha for the next GFWC International President, Carlene Garner. We hope you all have marked your calendars and are planning to attend. Because of the NCAA Baseball Championships being played in Omaha the week of June 13th, hotel rooms are going to be very tight in the city. Several hotels are already reporting “sold out” conditions for that week. The Convention begins with the State’s Night Banquet, June 11th, and will run through the post-convention Board meeting June 16th. You can come for all of the convention or just the installation. If you are only planning to attend the installation events, you should arrive by June 14th to help before and after the June 15th Installation and depart on the morn-ing of the 17th. These are the critical days for hotels.

Make your reservations early. If you change your mind it is easier to cancel a room than to have to find one. Once the GFWC room block is released on May 7, 2010, anything left will go fast. Because it is a GFWC election year we would expect a larger crowd so don’t wait. Plan now to reserve your space. Con-tact the Hilton Omaha at 1-800-445-8667 and reference “GFWC 2010 Annual International Conven-tion. If you reserve online, use the reference code “GFW.” The GFWC Convention rate is $169/night sin-gle, double, triple, or quad. The more the merrier!

Detailed information will be included in the early 2010 editions of the GFWC Clubwoman Magazine, including registration details, a preliminary agenda, and tour options. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. We need all the helping hands we can muster. It will truly be an evening to remember!

LEADS Candidate Application Due January 31

LEADS means Leadership Education and Development Seminar. It was started 8 years ago for the purpose of finding, training and encouraging clubwomen at the grassroots level to search and accept leadership opportu-nities at all levels. Last summer I was privileged to spend the day with 48 amazing women from all walks of life; from all over the country. This was truly an inspiring day, so full of information but also forming a bond be-tween each woman in the group. We still e-mail each other quite often and share experiences, ask for suggestions on projects that we have been asked to do or sometimes just share something that has happened. It has been a fantastic experience.

Now it’s your turn to have this experience. You will learn more about our organization, our history, ac-complishments and goals. To apply all you have to do is REGISTER. The information and registration forms are available online at: www.GFWC.org, in the GFWC Club Manual under Resources and Informa-tion and Forms. Again, deadline for submission to GFWC-WS is January 31, 2010. Mail your application to President Shirley Phipps.

It would be great if every club would submit one candidate. It takes very little effort and the rewards are GREAT!!!!! If you have any questions or would like help with the forms, please e-mail me and I would be happy to help you.

Once again I would like to thank everyone who supported me on this journey, I could not have done it without you. THANK YOU!

On August 15 and 16, Relay For Life took place at the Battle Ground High School track. The goal was to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

This year GFWC-Battle Ground had 2 teams for a total of 15 participants. Throughout the day and night, team members walked the track, participated in dif-ferent contests, and sold ap-propriate items. Prior to the event, GFWC-BG had held a "Twice Is Nice" Sale in order to raise funds for the Relay teams.

$800 was earned and shared equally between Relay For Life and the local Food Bank. At the conclusion of the 24 hour Relay For Life, GFWC-BG had contributed a total of $1324 to the American Cancer Society.

Making it Happen!

This summer the GFWC Springdale Women's Club decided to enter the Springdale Frontier Day's Parade. This is a first for the club since 2003. We came up with a theme and planned on a day to create our float. We met at Lela Taylor's to put the float together. We chose our own GFWC Federated Forest State Park for our theme. We had Lela's husband Jerry cut branches for us and then attached them to the float. We also put a bench on the float and surrounded it with trees; placed fake grass down; then foil and rocks for the creek that ran down the length of the float. We made our own signs for the float. Involved were Lela Taylor and husband Jerry, Carol Wickham, President Stefany Barkuloo, Vice President Lois McKinney and her son and his friend. We had our President Stefany Barkuloo ride on the float along with Vice-President Lois McKinney. It was enjoyed by all and we placed third in our division. We can't wait till next summer as the Springdale Women's Club will be entering again.

Helen Sutton Celebration of Life

On August 15th, 2009, forty GFWC members gathered at Fed-eration Forest to honor the memory of Helen Sutton. The weather was perfect, the kind Helen would have loved, cool but sunny. Our flag ceremony was expertly handled by the Camp Sheppard High Adventure staff. Songs were sung, prayers offered and memories of Helen shared. We were happy to greet old friends from the West Seattle Women’s Club as well as Helen’s niece and her husband. Kathie Jorgen-sen presented a plaque to Ranger Lewis from King County District in memory of Helen. The plaque reads “In Memory of Helen G. Sutton, Past President GFWC-Washington State 1953-1955 and Federation Forest Advocate.” This will be placed on a park bench within Federation Forest. Ranger Lewis tear-fully accepted the plaque and shared his memories of Helen. She will be missed but never forgotten.
