WYC NEWS cont.

DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW we received a September 4, 1937 Winnipesaukee Times from Joel and Linda Edinburg that contained a great little article about ear-ly WYC sailboat racing. We were able to pull out the scrap book from that year and find several photos of the two boats mentioned in the article! Back in those early days, the club had an anchorage in Weirs Bay, near the old seaplane docks. Club members raced in a variety of boats, but they were working towards “standardization” even

then. In fact, in the same issue of the newspaper, there was an advertisement for the Moulton Sandpiper, “WINN. Y.C. Class boat” built in Lakeport by McDuff Machine Company, Inc. of 85 Gould Street in Lakeport. Remember, if you have an idea or

topic for a future Did You Know? Wheth-

er it’s an historical fact, WYC trivia, or

anything else, send an e-mail to

Winnipesaukee Yacht Club Invitation

45th Annual Cold Duck Race

October 9, 2016 The Winnipesaukee Yacht Club is pleased to invite all sailors to the 45th annual Cold Duck Race.

This year’s version will feature all of the great components that make the Cold Duck a late season favorite, including our famous Cold Duck Chili, Pusser’s Rum Punch, and that highly desirable “Duck Gear” we have all come to expect.

We are thrilled to announce that we once again have Pusser’s Rum sponsoring the event with great prizes and giveaways, and of course, great Rum! Because this is our 45th year, we will be adding a few twists with raffles and prizes that can’t be beat!

Mark your calendar for October 9 and let nothing stand in your way. We are looking for a record turnout, fun and games and another terrific sailboat race!

WYC NEWS cont.

For starters, thanks to Paul Good-win, Tom Range and Graham Philpot for diving and helping me consolidate the pre-positioned mooring blocks at the Club and taking it one step further at Bear Island by floating the blocks and replacing the 25+ year old small one’s with new,1000 lb. blocks. It was time!! Also, thanks to Adam Angle for pounding nails at the Yacht Yard Dock to make walking on it safer. And finally, thanks to Scott Nolan for replacing one of the posts on the main dock that was broken at the water line. Sadly, it is not too early to think about winterizing moorings. I plan to close the mooring field on November 1 after which no boats may be on a moor-ing consistent with our permit from the State. The lighted buoys will come out that day. Also, my annual reminder, please put your name on your winter spar, float or whatever so in the spring when we are putting out the lighted buoys or discovering mooring chains that are no longer where they are meant to be we can better tell where we are locat-ed.

Please remove your dinghy from the dinghy dock also by November 1 and the same goes for sunfish, rowing shells or row boats on the racks or along the edge of the boat ramp. Remember, if you store these on the edge of the field at the Club they must be 14’ or less and completely covered with a dark brown tarp. Thanks to Al Herte who makes all arrangements to have mooring supplies in the cellar so they are easily available to our members for use on the spot. It is really helpful and makes our mooring field safer for all of us and our neigh-bors. Finally, I took a moment to add up

how many different temporary mooring

or dock space assignments were made

this summer—14 by my count. Thanks

to all those who notified me so we could

share the wealth of the mooring field.

RACE COMMITTEE

Thanks to the Cameron/Shaw led team, the 2016 Lobster Feed was a rec-ord-breaking HUGE success. The rainy forecast proved inaccurate and every portion of the club (inside, deck, porch , dock and lawn) was filled with very hap-py folks cracking open awesome lobstas. Our thanks to the huge number of volun-teers that once again made this another event to remember. Thanks to Keith Wentworth's clean-up crew that did an-other amazing job of returning our facili-ty to pristine shape! The 2016 Oktoberfest sold out in record time. We are looking forward to great German cuisine, fine music and fel-lowship on October 22. Please notify Keith Wentworth if you are available to assist with cleanup. The Haul Out Ham and Bean Sup-per is scheduled for October 15th. Thanks to Peter and Alida Millham and their team for volunteering to manage this event again this year. A huge thank you to Dick Pender-gast for another successful season of Fri-day Nite Pub Nites. Thanks to Pam Shaw for stepping in to cover when Dick could not be there. And also thank you to the many MANY folks that generous-ly donated hor's doevres and pizza to share all summer!

We may schedule a few WYC Movie Nites this fall depending on weather and interest. Please stay tuned to email for timing. Please note the date of the 2017 WYC Annual Meeting, Saturday January 14, 2017 at the Gilford Community Church, catered by The Lyon's Den. Our speaker will be WYC member Graham Philpot, who will share some of his mem-orable (and numerous) off-shore racing adventures. Graham was a graduate of the LWSA sailing program, became an instructor in the program and has gone on to race competitively (and successful-ly) both on and off lake for many years. Thanks to a donation, we will have outdoor speakers under the eves on the upper deck for the 2017 season, allowing for background music outside without blasting the volume inside. Thank you to Sandy Storer who has volunteered to in-stall them in the spring. Once again, we wish to thank all the scores of volunteers that have made the 2016 WYC SOCIAL SEASON THE BEST YET. John, Tom, Dick and Keith

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE

WYC NEWS cont.

Our Commodores Cup afforded lake sailors with the only PHRF/Buoy racing opportunity of the season. For the 14 teams that competed in this year’s ver-sion, it was a terrific opportunity to hone their boat handling and racing rules skills on a variety of courses. We kicked off the event with our traditional single handed race on Friday

night. The sailors started in Sanders Bay and raced around the 70’s. The race started off with a nice westerly but it died with the sunset. Casey Nickerson nipped his son Guy to take home the rum bottle in the Racing Class, and Jay Norden held of all comers for his second consecutive win in the Cruising Class. We had ten boats on the line, and they all stayed close right up to the end.

Page 6: Winnipesaukee Yacht Club JIB SHEETwyc-nh.org/wb/media/jibsheet/Jib Sheets 2016/Oct 2016 Jib Sheet.pdfinterest. Please stay tuned to email for timing. Please note the date of the 2017

Saturday dawned with a light nor-therly, and Principal Race Officer Jeff Kirchoff elected to set a course for the first race in Sanders Bay. His assistants, John O’Brien, Lynda Nelson, Brenda Whitmore and Don Forsberg got a course set quickly and the first race started right at the scheduled time. During that race, the wind began a mas-sive shift, but the committee boat stayed anchored and the race commit-tee completely reset the entire course without missing a beat! Larry Routhier was at the help of his boat which served as Committee Boat and Ruth McLaughlin was our scorekeeper and general organizer. They got off four rac-es for all classes, and the Race Commit-tee work was as good as you will see anywhere, and we received many com-plements. One person even remarked that it was nice that we had hired a pro-fessional Race Committee! A big THANKS to our team!!!! You are the greatest! The two spinnaker classes com-peted on windward leeward courses, while the Cruiser/Racers compet-ed on Triangles. Jeff managed to bal-ance the number of legs perfectly so that there was not a lot of waiting be-tween races and race management was the height of efficiency. The J-80 Class had for boats but quickly broke out into a continuation of the Friday night match Between Casey Nickerson sailing Argo and Guy Nicker-son and the crew of Pressure. Guy won race 1, while Argo fell to third behind Bob Knowles and He’s Baack! Pressure tripped up in Race two and fell to se-cond while Argo took the bullet. He’s Back was third and Al Herte and the crew of Schatz were fourth. While the finishes were close, races three and four saw Pressure in first, Argo in Second, He’s Baack! in third and Schatz in fourth

to set the final standings. The big Cruiser/Racers also had a close battle on triangular courses. Jay Norden and his crew of Fays rock stars on Claddagh stepped out to win three of four races, but by a close margin over Bob Garland sailing his Haleakala. Clad-dagh stormed out of the gate with a first race win, followed by Haleakala and then Shadow. Perineal podium presence Bob Garland stormed back to win Race two, with Shadow falling into place in second and Norden and his team drop-ping to third. In Raced three, Garland would stumble with DSQ forcing him out of the tight competition. Claddagh won the race followed by Shadow and that would be the story for race four as well, giving the regatta to Norden. Three racers also competed in the Racing Class. Sara Laroux’s shorthand-ed Ninkasi had four straight wins to claim the title in this class. Three of those wins were actually first over the line! The only boat to nip Ninkasi and prevent the sweep was none other than Don Parsons and his crew on Anticipa-tion. Charlie Boucher on Air Express managed to keep the racing close but had spinnaker problems and fell into third. The real excitement came in the Cruising B class. It looked like it was go-ing to be a runaway train with Chris Stevens winning races one and two by a wide margin, actually finishing ahead of most of the Cruising A boats! Mean-while, Jerry Slagle finished second in Feats of Strength and, JP Czech in Czechmate was third. Slagle and Czech traded places in race two, and with those big wins by Stevens, it looked like the race was for second.

That’s when the real Feats of Strength Happened. Slagle roared back with a first and Stevens stumbled and fell to second. Czech fell to fourth and Chuck Moretti on Nantucket Bound slipped into third. Stevens rebounded and pulled out the final race over Slagle with Czech in third and Moretti in Fourth to seal his overall victory. The racers got to enjoy a fabulous lobster dinner thanks to Laura Cameron, Steve Nix and the entire Lobster feed crew. Racing was canceled on Sunday due to bad weather, so we were all hap-py to have gotten in four races on Sat-urday! The overall winner of the Commo-dores cup is decided by the largest mar-gin of victory in a class. This year, for the first time in recent memory, there was a tie. The numbers were so close that it was determined that the crown would be shared by Sara Laroux and Chris Stevens. Congratulations to both of them!

Results: J-80 Pressure Guy Nickerson 1-2-1-1 Argo III, Case Nickerson 3-1-2-2 He’s Baack, Bob Knowles 2-3-3-3 Schatz, Al Herte 4-4-4-4 Racing Ninkasi, Sara Laroux/Ed Philpot 1-1-1-1 Anticipation, Don Parsons 2-2-2-2 Air Express, Charlie Boucher 3-3-3-3 Cruising A Claddagh, Jay Norden 1-3-1-1 Shadow, Mike Curtin 3-2-2-2 Haleakala, BobGarland 2-1-4(DSQ)-3 Cruising B Szep Lani, Chris Stevens 1-1-2-1

Feats of Strength, Jerry Slagle 2-3-1-2 Czechmate, J.P.Czech 3-2-4-3 Nantucket Bound, C. Morretti 4-4-3-4 Don’t Forget the Cold Duck! October 9

We really want a record number of boats to come out and support our 45th Cold Duck! Don Roper promises to out-do himself again with a memorable Cold Duck to end our season on October 9. This is the 45th year and we are already working on making this one special. As part of our work so far, we are pleased to announce the return of Pusser’s Rum with a renewal of their sponsorship of the event. They are stepping up big with great prizes ad giveaways for all of the participants.

The lake level might make it diffi-

cult to get some of the big boats out of Fay’s, so we really need to get every available boat on the line if we are going to surpass that magical thirty boats!
