REMINDERS

How old our Burgee is?

The distinctive WYC Burgee was proposed at the July 9, 1937 meeting of

the WYC. According to the minutes of this meeting, this was the second regular

meeting of the WYC.

The Clubs Secretary/Treasurer Ed-

ward D. Tuttle recorded the motion and vote as follows:

“Mr. Robert Smith made a motion that the club adopt a burgee composed of

concentric triangles of blue red and white, the outer triangle being blue, the

next triangle being white and the center

triangle red. The motion was seconded

by Mr. Francis and was passed by a

unanimous vote.”

At the time that this vote was taken, the club was still not in its club-

house and meetings were held at various locations. The first meeting, on June 25,

1937, was held at Laconia City Hall. The minutes of the second meeting do not in-

dicate where the meeting was held.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

As the summer season approaches,

please remember that our Club’s Liquor Policy requires that alcoholic beverages

be secured at all times.

It states: “Members are personally responsible to ensure that their alcoholic beverages are secure and inaccessible to minors and any other unauthorized person at all times.” In the past we have had adult bev-erages left out of the liquor cabinet or

cooler or the cabinet or cooler left unlocked. It is the responsibility of every member to ensure that we are complying with our policy. Beverages left unse-cured will be disposed of. Please also remember that WYC re-cycles. Please place your recyclables in a recycling container and, when full, lend a hand and empty the containers into the recycling dumpster. Again, this is a club policy and it is up to all of us to make it work.

Welcome aboard to our newest WYC

MANY HANDS MAKE LITTLE WORK!

18 WYC civic minded members, pro-

posed members, family and friends helped with the 2016 WYC Spring Road-

side Cleanup.

Our crew made quick work of the

2.8 mile stretch of route 11, from the Gilford scenic overlook to the Alton town

line. We split the stretch into 3 equal segments working in teams of two,

cleaning opposite sides of the road meeting in the middle. The team at the

scenic overlook where the trash can be

overwhelming had double the members moving down the hill toward the team

working uphill from Ellacoya. Two driv-ers drove and picked up the participants

to/from their locations. The entire op-eration took about an hour due to the

terrific turnout.

Thanks to all that helped your en-

thusiasm and smiles were greatly appre-

ciated.

This is a thanks to all those who

have offered moorings or dock spaces for the J80 Team Race Weekend on June

3-5. I may also reserve the inside of the main dock for race or support boats de-

pending on other final arrangements which are unfolding as we speak. I will

let you know the final plan the week of the races.

Once again, the Annual Mooring

Check Party is set for June 11th starting at 8:00 AM. All those known to require

new chain have been contacted sepa-rately. I will post the guidelines for this

day on the bulletin board including the

names of those who must replace their chain based on the 4-year requirement.

Remember that those who need to re-place chain must have it on the boat and

ready to go including your presence at the boat, and you must remove the old

chain concurrently. If you cannot attend you must identify a representative and

tell the Harbormaster who it is.

Thanks to Ron Egan for replacing

planks in the dingy dock in front of the porch. Thanks to Anne LaVin and Dick

Pendergast for helping to install one mooring ball and a new light on one of

our perimeter buoys. We now have all new blinking lights on the perimeter of

the mooring field. Thanks to Bruce Gokey and Dave Richardson for helping

to locate what turned out to be a tipped over mooring block and also spot the re-

turn location for another mooring block that was dragged by the ice. Thanks to

Tom Range for diving to deal with these two blocks.

We are experiencing a decline in

shared dinghy availability, persistent use

of the launch, and an increase in those

who want their own dinghy, mainly to

access Bear Island. For these reasons

more dock space will be returned to din-

ghy storage beginning this season.

The procedure for amending the constitution is set out at Article XIV. It states:

ARTICLE XIV

AMENDMENTS

Section 1 ... This constitution shall only be amended as follows: Every amend-ment must be approved, by a two thirds majority vote in the affirmative at two suc-

cessive regular meetings. Each proposed amendment must be legibly written or printed and signed by at least two members proposing same, and sent to the Secre-

tary of the Club. Before said amendment can be considered at a regular meeting, it must have appeared in the Jib Sheet prior to each of the two voting meetings. No

amendment once rejected shall be reconsidered at any subsequent meeting within six months thereafter. (Amended 2000).

The officers and Trustees have received a request from Russ Thibeault and Ca-sey Nickerson for the following constitutional amendment. The proposed amend-

ment, legibly written and signed by two club members was sent to and received by the Secretary of the Club. This amendment is consistent with the Report of the Life

Membership Committee, and the recommendations of the Committee as set out in their report. The request for an amendment has been presented consistent with Arti-

cle XIV of the constitution.

The proposed amendment is as follows:

To amend the constitution, Article XVI, Section 2, first sentence to remove the number 90 from the first sentence and replace it with the number 66.67. All other

language in article XVI shall remain as is. The section, upon approval of the amend-ment, would read:

“Section 2... The election of life members shall be by 66.67 percent vote at

two successive regular meetings following notification in the Jib Sheet prior to the next regular meeting of the WYC. Life members are absolved of paying annual

dues.”

WINNIPESAUKEE GRANDMASTER’S TEAM RACE

WYC NEWS cont.

June 3-5, 2016 will be the weekend of the Winnipesaukee Grandmasters Team Race. We will have sixty sailors on the water, twelve umpires, five Race Committee people, two transfer boats, two mark boats and a number of spectator boats for Saturday and Sunday. Friday is a practice day and starts at 1PM. Many volunteers have made this happen. Hous-ing for all of umpires and most of the teams has been generous offered by many WYC mem-bers.

We still need three more volunteers for Friday night dinner and another three more volunteers for the Saturday night dinner at the LWSA. There are a couple of spots for owner’s rep to sail on the J/80’s. Need someone to help out as a First Aid person.

We have teams from New York Yacht Club, Storm Trysail Club, Annapolis YC (their club house burned to the ground last winter), St. Francis YC from San Francisco and a com-bined team from our lake and Ida Lewis YC in Newport, RI. Skippers must be 60 years of age and crew 50 years of age. Each boat will have an owner’s rep onboard. No age limit for the owners reps.

Friday, June 3-Practice 1:00pm—5:00pm. BYOB cocktails at WYC will start at 5:30pm. Grandmasters Dinner catered by Lyons Den will start at 6:30. This normally is the monthly meeting night which has been moved to June 10th. Saturday, June 4-Famous Rotary Muffins and coffee start at 8:15am Skippers meeting at 9:00am First start will be 10:00am Lunch will be from Jon’s RB, handed out around 11:30am Racing to continue in to mid to late afternoon. BYOB cocktails start at 5:30pm at the LWSA Sailing Center, large tent. Grandmasters Lobster dinner will start at 6:30pm. Sunday June 5 -Famous Rotary Muffins and coffee start at 8:15am. First start will be at 10:00am. Lunch will be from Jon’s RB, handed out around 11:30am Last Race will be finished by 2:00pm. Prize giving at 3:00pm. Teams away by 3:40pm.

The Grandmasters format has become very popular over the past ten years, with events all over the United States every year. This comes out of the Hinman Masters Team Race platform which started over twenty years ago. The older masters wanted to continue so the Grandmasters Team Race was organized.

To make this Team Race Regatta happen thirteen J/80’s were borrowed, five Zodiacs ribs, and two mark boats, RC and transfer boats along with spectator boats and a photo boat. Housing for sixty-two was graciously given by mostly WYC members. Seven mooring holders have offered their moorings along with a number of dock holders for the weekend. The club moved the June monthly meeting to the 10th. North Sails gave us twelve back stay flags and numbers for all the bows. Brewster Academy loaned us three of their ribs. We still need a few volunteers for the Friday night dinner and the Saturday night dinner at the LWSA Sailing center. WOW!!!
