Wines Direct | 2 Proud recipients of the McKennas’ Guides award for the 17th consecutive year

We hope you enjoy browsing our Christmas brochure. Did we tell you it’s our 25th one? Time fl ies when you’re having fun they say, but even more so when you’re sharing that time with loved ones. So from our family to yours, have yourself a merry little Christmas and here’s to time well spent!

Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

Gareth Keogh & Gavin Keogh

Behind all its bright lights and lavish decorations, Christmas is essentially about sharing time. We were reminded of this when we contacted our winemakers to tell us how they spent their Christmas for this, our 25th, Christmas brochure. It seems that at this special time of year, whether they are down under in Australia or snowed under in Austria, even our most dedicated winemakers want to put work on hold and share time with their loved ones.

Put Your Feet UpWe know you will want to do the same so the aim of our Christmas service is to save you time. As the high streets begin to swarm with shoppers, you can put your feet up with our guaranteed 48 hour delivery to any address in Ireland. Of course it helps if we can save you a little bit of money along the way too and, with savings of over 20% and free delivery on selected cases or orders over €200, we’re doing exactly that.

Make it a GiftMake any of these exclusive cases the perfect gift by getting us to deliver direct to your friends or family. To make it even more personal, you can include our brand new, Martyn Turner designed Christmas card with your very own message handwritten inside. Whether it’s a one-liner or an epic poem, our team will loyally transcribe your Christmas greeting (although perhaps don’t make it too epic).

Create-Your-OwnAll our cases feature wines we think are at the peak of their power in terms of taste and value but we know many of you have your own personal favourites. If you don’t see a case you like, simply turn to page 28 where you can choose from our ‘Mix and Match’ list of over 70 wines. Combine any six or more of these selected wines and receive an automatic discount of 10%.

A Winemakers ChristmasEver wondered what they have for Christmas dinner in Austria? Or what it’s

like having Christmas in the sun down under? Take a journey around the

world with our winemakers and discover what the biggest meal of the year is

for them. From octopus in Portugal, to empanadas in Argentina, you might

find something inspiring for your own Christmas feast!

As the vineyards sleep quietly under a blanket of snow in the Kamptal Valley, winemaker Gunther Brandl and his family can afford a few days off together.

“Christmas is generally quiet and we only want to spend time with our family, not the vines,” Gunther said before explaining that they are not quite the typical Austrian family at Christmas. “We don’t have a traditional dinner in our house;

one year it’s salmon, another year it could be a cold meat dish. We do tend to have fondue on Christmas eve…and our Grüner Veltliner is set aside for schweinsbraten,

a roasted pork dish with dumplings and pickled cabbage.”

With harvest just around the corner (usually February/March) it is pretty busy down in Paddy Borthwick’s North Island vineyard. They do get some time off

though and Paddy, who grew up on a sheep farm, told us: “I often put sheep down in the vineyard over the Christmas break so they can eat the leaves undisturbed.”

So, is it lamb for Christmas dinner then? “No. We have a more traditional style dinner like you in Ireland; turkey with all the trimmings like bread sauce, potatoes,

veg etc. We often chill our Pinot Noir to have with the turkey and if you leave it to warm up, it goes perfectly with the pudding!”

Feliz Navidad de la Argentina!

This Christmas is a special one in the Balbo household. Winemaker Susana Balbo’s daughter Ana, is expecting a baby boy. “Santino will be the first

grandchild in our family so this means there will be lots of celebrations,” Ana told us proudly and we wish her all the best at this exciting time. In the country of mighty Malbec and even mightier steaks, what is on the Balbo’s

Christmas table? “There is always pork with apple puree,” Ana explained, “and vitel toné, a local favourite made of thin, cold slices of veal with a tuna, anchovy and mayonnaise sauce. Empanadas, of course, make an appearance too and

are amazing with chimichurri sauce.”

Happy Christmas from Australia!

Christmas in the remote regions of Western Australia strikes quite the contrast to our mid-winter celebrations. “Our traditional Christmas dinner is actually a lunch and is usually outside,” explained Rod Hallett, one half of the winemaking team along with his wife Sandy. He continued: “We sit down with our extended family and three daughters and there are usually

plenty of stories to be told. We have an array of cold meats, salads, and fresh seafood. Prawns are a favourite and, as it is often a hot summer’s day, we

wash them down with chilled sparkling wine. Sauvignon Blanc complements them perfectly too, particularly if they are in a garlic and butter sauce.”

The Hallett Family

Feliz Natal de Portugal! All is quiet on the Roquette’s terraced vineyards at Christmas time.

“Everyone is at home with family,” exclaimed Miguel Roquette. “We close the estate so that all the workers can enjoy this magic season with loved ones.” Miguel then went on to describe their festive spread: “We have our

dinner on Christmas Eve. Typical in this part of northern Portugal is roast cod and roast octopus (polvo no forno) with potatoes and vegetables. For

desserts, we would always have rabanadas which is traditional bread cooked in honey, cinnamon, sugar and Port.” And just what does a port maker

recommend with port? “A good table of cheese – cheddar, gouda or brie - and good company!” and good company!”

Dr. di Nieri works primarily with Sangiovese, the

famous grape of Chianti, on vineyards which are on average about 200m above

sea level. Grapes are grown in clay soil with various

minerals and trace elements which give complexity to the

finished product. It is aged for a few months in tonneaux (very large oak tanks) which

reduces the surface contact with the wood. This means oak is not the main player

but rather an assistant in the development of the wine’s

flavour and texture.

e main purpose of decanting a wine is to expose

it to oxygen so that it becomes more expressive.

e wine relaxes and releases more aromas and

Pascal Cuisset cuts a prominent figure in the vineyards of

Bergerac. Strongly built and prone to exuberant gestures,

he has the tough hands of a man who has spent a lifetime

working outdoors. We still remember the strength of his

grip the first time he shook our hands. Pascal’s three passions are wine, the tuba and rugby.

He is a colourful fixture at local events as leader of the local

brass band, so it’s no wonder his wines are so expressive. He loves working with the classic

Bordeaux varietals and his white is a wonderfully lively

blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, perfect for drinking

on its own.

Winemaker Irene Paiva is one of many pioneering women that

we’re fortunate to work with. She achieves charismatic wines with ease in the Lontue Valley, a premium region for much of Chile’s best known wines. The Korta estate benefits from the

Wairarapa gets its name from a Maori word meaning “glistening

waters” after the suitably shimmering lake that lies at the

heart of the region. This is where we discovered Paddy Borthwick, the rather rugged sheep farmer

who swapped the staff for the vine when he was in his 20s.

He left home to study oenology in Australia before becoming a

travelling winemaker working in some of the world’s finest wine

regions. In Burgundy he fell in love with Pinot Noir and he returned

home to put his study into practice. The results are award-winning.

TAHBILK 2014Nagambie Lakes, AustraliaViognier

A bold and aromatic white with a distinctive Rhône Valley feel. Heady aromas of honeysuckle and cinnamon spice entice and the palate rewards with a silky texture, exuberant apricot and balancing acidity. Exciting and refreshing.

PADDY BORTHWICK ‘PAPER ROAD’ 2014Wairarapa, New ZealandPinot Noir “Aroma of rose petals on the nose. On the palate, delicacy and harmony from strawberry and raspberry.” Ernie Whalley, The Sunday Times

ALKOOMI 2012Frankland River, AustrtaliaSauvignon Blanc “Estate-grown grapes are picked at varying levels of maturity to add complexity to a wine that sees no oak and is early bottled. As befi ts a wine with a preponderance of Semillon, grassy/lemony characters drive the bouquet and palate, which has considerable generosity and length.”James Halliday

CORIOLE REDSTONE 2012McLaren Vale, AustraliaShiraz

“A glorious McLaren Vale Shiraz with a great deal of Australian sunshine in the taste but with proper structure too. This is a poised red, not a wallowing monster and the oak is subtle, restrained and a seasoning rather than a theme.” Tom Doorley, Irish Daily Mail

Stéphane Dupuch has a warmth and friendliness that is sometimes missing amongst the Bordeaux wine glitterati. His exuberance and passion is transmitted into every bottle and the pride he has in his work is evidenced by the fact that he happily shares his winemaking techniques with wine lovers where ever he goes. His drive for quality is ceaseless. If he feels the harvest has not produced good enough quality grapes, he sells them to local cooperatives and refuses to use them for Château Sainte Marie wine.

For an introduction to the big, bold and luxurious side of the Rhône, look no further than Didier Charavin’s hand-crafted gems. Didier took over the reins of this small family winery from his dad in 1985. Up until that point, all the grapes were sold to the neighbouring co-operative in the village of Rasteau. Didier began to make his own wine and hired a mobile bottling unit so he could bottle it on-site himself. Thus Domaine Didier Charavin was born and he remains proudly independent to this day.

The cheeky Vincent stands out most prominently in the often overlooked region of Touraine. His willingness to limit yields and tend vines with meticulous care has been fundamental to his success. The results of practices like manual removal of weeds from the foot of each plant and strict avoidance of chemical herbicides and pesticides are readily apparent in his wines. They offer a great example of how the personality of a winemaker can find its way into your glass!

The Bret Brothers need little introduction to Burgundy fans. What has caught the wine world’s attention, aside from the quality of their wines, is the type of plots they choose and how they farm them. They only select parcels of old vines (+50 years) farmed by organic growers. The plots are small (less than one acre) and the brothers make wine from each plot separately. This means there are only 900 to 4000 bottles of each wine produced per year, making them ‘micro-cuvées’ and highly sought after ones at that.

aniseed and crushed black fruits.”Tomás Clancy, The Sunday Business Post

DOMAINE CHRISTIAN MOREAU 2014Chablis A/C, France

Chardonnay

“The family here makes this beautiful, typical Chablis from classical vineyards. A superb benchmark for Chablis’ rehabilitation.”

Tomás Clancy, The Sunday Business Post

CHATEAU HAUT-SEGOTTES 2008Saint Emilion Grand Cru A/C, France

“Plenty of substance and texture here, good depth and balance leads on to a long fi nish.”

Raymond Blake, Food and Wine Magazine

CHARPENTIER BRUT RESERVE NVChampagne A/C, France

Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir

“There is seductive champagne throughout the Charpentier range produced in the Marne Valley. Of the three supplied for our tasting,

this was the best. Complex and classy.” Ernie Whalley, The Sunday Times

DOMAINE THEULOT JUILLOT ‘LA CAILLOUTE’ 2013Mercurey 1er Cru A/C, France

Pinot Noir

“Sweet fruit on the nose, good intensity on the palate, some exotic

DOMAINE MASSON-BLONDELET ‘VILLA PAULAS’ 2014Pouilly Fume A/C, France

Sauvignon Blanc

“Garden perfume of elderfl owers and freshly bruised basil and mint leaves. A pretty and feminine Sauvignon Blanc with a citrus streaky

and typical pithy and crunchy green-apple character.”Liam Campbell, The Irish Independent

The Côtes d’Or in Burgundy may be the focal point of famous names and expensive Grand Crus but further south, the village of Mercurey in the Côte Chalonnaise has plenty to offer the astute Burgundy fan. This is where we meet Emile Juillot and Nathalie Theulot, the welcoming husband-and-wife team making fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at appealing prices. Their ‘La Cailloute’ is a Pinot Noir that comes from one of the few remaining monopoles in Burgundy, making it a deliciously rare find.

Picturesque Chablis village with its Romanesque towers and quiet, narrow streets is the home of Christian Moreau and his son Fabien. The domaine is one of the most renowned in the area and their grand cru vineyards look down on the village from the fabled southwest facing slopes above the town. They firmly believe in wines of provenance, that not only represent Chablis, but specific hillsides too. Since recovering the family vineyard they have attained international acclaim and their wines are hailed for their depth and quality.
