On one hand, there is AD “13. jul – Plantaže” with the capacity of about 140,000 hl of wine,by far the largest winery in the country and one of the largest in the region.On the other hand, there are small wineries with the capacity of up to 100,000 bottlesproduced per annum and a large number of small grape producers producing wine for theirown needs and for direct sale. According to the findings of the Sector analysis, the estimate isthat the number of family wineries in the country is above 500, producing less than 4,000 litresper annum.

A DUAL STRUCTURE EXISTS IN WINE PRODUCTION

ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SECTOR
According to MONSTAT data, family agricultural holdings cultivate 0.2 ha of vineyard per holding, on average. The agriculture census 2010 covered 2001 holding growing grape vine on the total area of 2535 ha.
Number of holdingsThe Central register of grapes and wine producers kept by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has 510 grapes and wine producers entered so far, of which number 54 family wineries produce wine.

IPA 2011 is funding a project Technical Support to Renewal of viticulture zoning of MontenegroProject started in April 2015 and will last for 24 monthsThe purposes of the project are:- to determine new viticulture regions with their
borders as the precondition for setting up the labeling of wine with geographical origin
- to determine European wine growing zones (A, B, C) which are very important for oenological practices and restrictions
- the possibility of expanding the areal cultivation of wine grapes in Montenegro

REGISTER OF GRAPES AND WINE PRODUCERS
Register of grapes and wine producers exist in manual format.
The Register keeps the records on the year of planting, varieties, planting density, yield and purposeof grapes, data on wine cellars.
The electronic register of vineyards will be set up. The Register will contribute to linking of all data in the sector and it will facilitate the system of control of all phases and tracing of all steps. This is one of priorities that will be continuously worked on and that will provide preconditions for eligibility for support under the CAP.
