a more efficient business model Windsor Energy is a privately-held, independent oil and gas company headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. With the company’s fast growth, it was no longer practical to use customized Excel spreadsheets to perform engineering calculations and data transmission. Not only was this manual database method becoming too cumbersome, it also started to limit the operational effectiveness as too much time was spent on creating reports and moving data from one place to another. The company was ready to test an automated alternative for data capture and delivery and, if successful, move towards a proven, more efficient business model.

a tested solutionWindsor initially conducted a pilot using the Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) production operations software platform, Avocet Volumes Manager (AVM), as the main technology tool. The routes for testing the automated data capture and transmission comprised more than 100 wells.

This project included the following activities:

■■ convert historical data from legacy system and spreadsheets■■ configure two routes, 27 stops, and organization hierarchy■■ develop custom reports:

■■ Daily and Monthly Downtime by Category■■ Monthly Gauge and Production Report■■ Weekly Production by Battery and Completion

■■ configure two allocation networks■■ customize AVM software to handle type curve data by field■■ set up approximately 15 users and five roles (lease operator, field superintendent,

production accountant, data technician, and administrator) with display/security and read/write access privileges

■■ customize training to the needs of lease operators, production accountant, and administrators■■ create a Quick User Guide tailored to Windsor configuration and

operational workflows.

A further enhancement was the synchronization of disconnected data capture, so that lease operators could enter data in locations with slow Internet connections and transmit to the master database via a secure FTP, ensuring continuous connectivity.

The overall SIS-offered solution is termed Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), which is defined as “software deployed as a hosted service and accessed over the Internet.”

A fundamental shift in the software industry and driven by its economic advantages, the SaaS solution provides

■■ ownership by an external provider (SIS), where the customer is not required to manage the infrastructure

■■ economy of scale, which reduces costs for the customer who pays for services through a per-well subscription that expands and con-tracts with client activity.

100 wells and growingAfter the successful pilot, the PDMS/SaaS solution was implemented in conjunction with Schlumberger ePrime* in the College Station Financial Center. In fact, more wells are being added all the time to expand the hosted, Web-enabled services beyond the first 100 test wells. However, Windsor wanted to also evaluate SIS engineering tools for production surveillance, advanced analysis, and forecasting. A one-month trial of OFM software was arranged and, after proving its capabilities in just one week, was adopted as the new standard for the company’s well and reservoir analysis, following which OFM was dynamically linked to AVM. This resulted in faster and more accurate decisions based on the availability of the most up-to-date information for immediate analysis and action.

As a result of this project, Windsor engineers not only work more efficiently, they have more time to spend on performing high-quality production analysis of wells and reservoirs. Data management tasks are left up to the new, Web-based PDMS that automatically displays the lat-est field data. Furthermore, reports that once took hours to run can now be generated within seconds.

The next phase of the project is to roll out this technology solution to the remaining Windsor assets. Additional optional services will include

■■ ePrime upstream accounting services, to include interfacing of AVM software into the ePrime integrated accounting system

■■ production studies through Schlumberger Data Consulting Services (DCS).
