The Pastor Writes… Dear Friends, Not finding much on regular television that interests us, Gail and I recently began binge-watching a show called “Downton Abbey,” which is about the Crawleys, a British aristocratic family who finds their world changing dramatically during the second and third decades of the 20th century. War, social movements and protest, along with technological changes (like the “wireless” radio), were conspiring to move the earth under their feet. Adapting to the changes, or not, is a constant theme of the series. We find that the second and third decades of the 21st century are shaping up to be just as tumultuous as the 20th century. The last two sentences in the previous paragraph could be about our times, our circum-stances, except changing the nature of the technological changes from “wireless” radio to internet, Artificial Intelligence, smart phones, etc. What do we do in such times? Do we sit and comment negatively about everything new that comes down the pike? And never accept anything new? Do we blindly accept new things simply because they are new…and therefore better? I believe that we need a discerning spirit in times like these in order to live out our lives and our faith with integrity, so that we do not reflexively accept or reject anything new that comes along…just because it is new. As I am writing this, I am meditating upon the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10. Martha goes rushing around serving the meal for those gathered around Jesus and her sister Mary is not helping. She is sitting and listening at the feet of Jesus. When Martha complains about Mary not helping, Jesus says that Mary “has chosen the better part.” In my mind, what that means is that she is keeping her mind focused on Jesus, to keep her life centered on Jesus. Jesus is the proverbial “one thing” that is needful for living a life and faith with integrity, producing the fruit of God’s Spirit in our lives, experiencing the joy of God’s presence in our lives, even when the earth seems to be moving underneath our feet. In times like these…and all times, remember this: “turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will seem strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.” That will keep us centered. That will keep us choosing “the better part.” Peace,
Doug
P.S. If you have watched “Downton Abbey” all the way to the end…please don’t tell us how it ends!
Preparing for 2020
It is time for our committees and groups to begin the process for planning for the next year, 2020!
As the ministry groups meet prior to our August Council on Ministries meeting, work together to explore hopes and dreams for your groups' ser-vice in the coming year. Start with hopes and dreams, then goals, then cal-endar and then make your budget requests for the coming year. In all things, remember our mission, to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transfor-mation of the world.
All administrative groups need to do the same to report to the Finance Committee by mid=September for budget requests.
Help!!!!
We are looking for a volunteer to serve as Secretary at Administrative Board meetings. This would involve attending the meetings, writing down what is discussed. This allows Ad Board to effectively review and follow up, and helps the meetings to flow better. See Pastor Doug if you are interested.
We have a number of young adults who are around church life in one way or another. God is placing a call on the heart of someone (individual or team) who will coordinate young adult life here, take special inter-est, mentor, and have a big part in wrapping God’s loving arms around them so that they can continue to grow in discipleship. Is God calling you? Are you listening? If you wish to talk about it, call Pastor Doug, right now. Take a look at our softball team, you will find where some of those young adults are. By the way, our soft-ball team is not all young adults. Just so you know. We are seeking more and more ways to connect our young adults to the life of the church.
Welcome New Members!
On Sunday, August 4 (at 5 pm) we will hold a New Member Exploration Gath-ering in our Church Library. This informal time of conversation will be just right for those of you who have worshipped with us here at Windsor Hills UMC for a while, but who would like to learn more about being a member of Windsor Hills and a disciple of Jesus Christ. Please let Pastor Doug know if you are in-terested in attending.
On Pentecost Sunday, June 9, we welcomed several new members: Joe and Ann Gillen, Tommy and Kari Boothe (with their children Gunnar and Jaxon), and Joan Compton. We rejoice to share with them together in our walk of faith.
Several others have attended the New Member Exploration Gathering, but have not yet joined. If you are one of those persons, and are now ready to join, please talk to Pastor Doug.
We are blessed that the people of Windsor Hills continue to invite, welcome and embrace new friends in our walk of faith!

More About Joel Raney...
JOEL RANEY (b. 1956) started playing the piano sometime between learning to walk and learning to read. His taste for gospel music began in a rural Bap-tist church in Alabama, an influence that shows strongly in his work to this day. After completing his degree in choral conducting at the University of North Alabama, he went on to sharpen his keyboard skills, earning a masters degree in piano performance at The Juilliard School. Since 1999 he has taken the church music scene by storm, with over 200 titles in print, primarily with Hope Pub-lishing where he serves as Editor. His innovative style and inspired arranger's instincts put his numerous choral an-thems, musicals and cantatas, handbell compositions, piano solos, and instru-mental works at the top of sales charts year after year.

Children’s Ministries...
For some of us, August feels like summer time is over as our kids are
returning to school, and it’s time to get back into the routines of life.
I’m sure many of us have seen the Pinterest posts of lunches on the
first day of school vs. the last day. Those beautiful box lunches
are filled with cut out rocket-ship sandwiches, sweet notes, and healthy
snacks for the middle of the day. By the end of the year, the
lunchboxes are full of whatever is in the cabinet such as packets of
sugar, stalks of celery, bag of cheez-its, and maybe an apple. These
posts remind me of the seasons of life. Just like the New Year, the
start of school is a time to reflect, create new routines, and encourage
our children to put their best foot forward.
So often, we focus on creating routines for our children. I would say don’t forget about yourself. Try to carve out time for a devotion each morning before the kids wake or listen to worship music as you go for a morning walk/run. While we focus on our children and their spiritual formation, don’t forget to feed your desire for God. By modeling a life invested in God, you will be giving your children a wonderful gift.
After much thought and time spent looking over calendars, Children’s Council has decided to continue our Sunday Summer of Fun/Mission Work throughout August to allow our teachers a little more flexibility. We also would like to move our kids up to their next class on Blessing of the Backpack day in September. Please continue to bring your kids to the Fellowship Hall downstairs where activities will be planned.
Upcoming Events & Activities: While it may only be August, please make note we will begin working on the Christmas Musical shortly. If your child is interested in participating, please let Heather know.
August 17th: Outdoor Movie Night (Wonder Park) starts at 7:00 pm
September 8th: Blessing of Backpacks/Move-Up Day & Volunteer Appreciation Brunch
September 29th: Children’s Sabbath at 10:30 am (run by the children)
*December Events:
December 1st: Practice after service with lunch
December 7th: Dress Rehearsal & Christmas Party Downtown
December 8th: Christmas Musical at 10:30 am
December 24th: Family Service at 4:30 pm
Children’s Council has finished planning for the remainder of 2019 and through 2020. Be on the look-out for a new Calendar of Events!
Joyful Voices will resume in August, but will be focused on the Christmas Musical.
Blessings,
Heather

Youth Events...
Hey, Youth Families! I hope all is well with you!
August is here and I can’t believe how fast time has gone! The carefree days of
summer are almost over, and soon it’ll be time to get back to school.
We have really done some great activities this summer and I know God will
continue to bless us as we move throughout the year. With school starting
soon, we will begin a schedule of events to keep things consistent during the
school year and to help us better serve you, our church and the community.
Something to ponder: You know you’ll have to focus on many things this school
year, but are you focusing on the right things? Read Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to
number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” While we may not know
the exact number of days we have to live, we do know that we don’t have forever
to live on this earth. So keeping that in mind—that we have a small number of
days that make up our life—how do you feel about the way you spend your days?
Where does God fit into how you spend your days?
August Events:
August 3 Wet'n Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park
August 17 Outdoor Movie Night, 7 pm
August 25 Red Sox Game
Upcoming:
September 8 Youth Group meetings resume, 12-2 pm
September 15 Back to School Rally
September 28 Car Show
Things to keep in mind:
Students are encouraged to invite friends to come to all youth events!
On months when there is a 5th Sunday, the Youth will usher.
Youth meetings will not meet when we have WHAT events or holidays.
We are always looking for volunteers to help with youth meetings, providing and
serving meals, being guest speakers, etc. Please let me know if you are interested
in serving with the youth. Of course I always welcome feedback and ideas from
you! I want to hear what you need from me to help you grow in your faith.
If you have any questions or want more information about Youth Group, you can

What is Christian Stewardship?
I visit churches, working with Finance/Stewardship Committees and church leaders. I preach and
teach what I believe is an essential understanding of what it means to be a faithful and generous stew-
ard. Much of what I have learned I have gained from others, listening to and reading those who have
been on this journey longer than me. One of them is Herb Miller and here (he) writes, “Christian
stewardship is the faithful management of all that God gives so that God can use our gifts to trans-
form us spiritually and to extend Christ’s transforming love to others.”*
I love that! By giving we are transformed and our spiritual lives deepened. Nothing about money,
but yet money is included, as is time, talents, spiritual gifts, “all that God gives” to make our lives ful-
filling. Everything leads to and points to God! Or as we might say, “It’s not about us! Its about God!”
Do you know we are stewards of relationships, friendships, a valued commodity in this world that
requires care and cultivation?
The end result of a wholesome and healthy Christian stewardship is that God gets the glory and
God’s kingdom is enlarged, enriched, strengthened, and disciples are made.
Herb then goes further for disciples of Jesus: “Financial stewardship is treasure management that
helps us to escape the trap of selfishness by keeping ourselves spiritually focused on God.” Again, it is
a matter of spirituality, of focusing on God, so that we manage the financial treasurers we have to
avoid the traps set for consumers by the aggressive retail pitches and appeals. Wouldn’t that be a
blessing to the church and to the home!
Christians also value the stewardship of the earth and its natural resources. While others work to
save the earth - a worthy goal - the Christian values environmental stewardship because God created
the earth, world and universe. “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth…”
It is again, “the faithful management of all that God gives…” We do not worship creation, we wor-
ship the Creator and see the earth as a good gift from God. Humans were given “dominion” over all
the earth.
Clearly, we have not done well in either regard. We Christians have much to confess about how
we have “stewarded” the earth and our possessions. But God always welcomes starting again, starting
over, and you can make a new promise to God to be a better steward of your money, possessions,
blessings, relationships, and friendships. We all can practice earth-care.
Write down those two definitions by Herb Miller and post them where you can see them daily. Let
them sink in. And practice generosity. Always practice generosity!

6:30 PM TO 8 PM
Calling all people who can help on Wednesday, August 14 from 6:30 to 8 pm. We need hedge
trimmers and people to rake and carry cut branches. The parking lot edges need to be trimmed
badly. If we have many hands we can make much quicker work of this project.

Did you know that the donations in the offering plates
at the front of the church on communion Sundays
fund the Minister’s Discretionary Fund which is used
for people with emergency financial needs.
Another fund, the Helping Our Own Fund, is supported
by envelope donations, specifically marked for this
fund. This fund is used for church members only with
special financial needs.
The Helping Our Own
fund has been nearly
depleted. This is an
opportunity to give to
help those in need.
Altar Flowers
Would you consider giving flowers
one Sunday in memory of a loved
one? Or perhaps you would give
them in honor of someone, or a
special occasion? The flower
chart, located in the hallway in
front of the office, has openings.
The cost is $45. There are Altar
Flower forms in the breezeway
and around the church, or you
may call the church office for more
information.
