n February 25th, a beautiful Saturday morning, six mem-bers from Cal-Inland joined
GPX Region members for a visit to the new Porsche Experience Center in Carson, Ca. Once we arrived and en-tered the main lobby, we went to the reception desk and told them that we were with the group from GPX. We were then ushered into a room to sign in and get our badges that would allow us to participate in the ride-along. We had about 40 minutes to wait before our group was scheduled so we all took the opportunity to walk around the lobby and look at some amazing cars. In the lobby, there was a new Panamera with the restyled rear end. It does look much better than the first and I guess the haters will have to find something else to pick on. There was also a new 911R and that drew a lot of attention. A 959 sat close to the en-trance and a Type 804 Formula 1 car was just past the reception area. Also in the main lobby was my absolute fa-vorite Porsche of all time, a 1970 917K.

sports shop from the rest of the build-ing. We didn't have access but we could see some of the cars that were being maintained and restored. A 911 GT1 sat next to a couple of 962s and there was also a couple of race 911s visible. Down one side of the surgically clean room was a row of engine stands, each with something very inter-esting on them. I wonder if one would fit in my 914. Hmm.
There is a sandwich shop on the main floor called the Speedster Cafe. They sell mostly sandwiches, salads and drinks and a few of us quenched our thirsts while waiting for our turn on the track. Next to the Speedster Cafe is the Porsche Bou-tique. It has all manner of things for sale, all related to Porsche, naturally. Although I didn't go upstairs, there is a row of driving simulators where people can rent some time and the Restaurant 917 which offers fine dining with a great view of the driving facilities.
When our time came for the ride-along, I ended up in the back seat of a new Macan S. I was surprised at the amount of room back there and it was also quite comfortable, even for
me. Our driver took us to the track and stopped, asking if we wanted him to demonstrate launch control. After a resounding “yes” he stood on the brakes and floored the accelerator. One he released the brakes, the car just took off like a rocket. No wheel spin or fishtailing, it just went. We were able to get up to about 90 mph by the end of the straight. I was a bit con-cerned as I knew there was a right hand turn coming up. It wasn't as sharp as I thought and we went through it with no trouble. We did one complete lap around the course and it is amaz-ing how a vehicle this size and this tall takes the corners. I asked the driver how a person could get this job and his response was “This is a JOB?”
After the ride-along, we sat down to lunch that was provided by the Speedster Cafe as part of the package. After that, everyone had other plans for the day and went their own ways.
The CAI members who attend-ed were Ian and Camille Anderson, Eric and Sandra Burkhardt, John Quick and myself.
