WOW! Can you believe that Thunder Roads Magazine of Tennessee is 16 years old this month!? Toni and Brain did an amazing thing 16 years ago when they decided to go out on a limb and start up a bike magazine and we are so grateful and thankful for their many years of hard work and dedication. Thunder Roads Magazine is now in 22 States and going strong! Although we have only been the owners/publishers for a short 8 months, we are so proud of this magazine and hope that it’s only getting better with time, like fine wine. THANKS to our loyal ADVERTISERS and READERS, this magazine has grown and will continue to grow with your support. Readers, PLEASE don’t forget the loyal advertisers that allow us to keep printing this magazine free to you and shop those advertisers that support us. Well we had beautiful riding weather for the Easyriders Bike Show but I can’t say the same today. As I write this letter, we have had 3 rounds of hazardous weather in a week, we have had sleet, snow, ice, more snow and now it’s raining and cold, even with all the rain our neighborhood streets are still treacherous due to so much ice that was under the snow. We broke some weather related records with temps well below normal and moisture above normal, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “welcome to Tennessee, where the weather is always subject to change!” I would like to give a big shout out to Easyriders, the show was awesome!! We had a great time and were crazy busy all day and did not have time to leave our booth for a minute, well except for when I left and went to the Tommy Flanagan “Chibs” meet and greet with Mechele. I could have stayed and listen to him talk all day, loved the accent, but had to get back to work/play. Thank you COOPER CHILTON for covering the show for us and for taking some awesome pics, also for the beautiful centerfold, without Coop there would not be an article or pics. Also, thank you Mechele and Rob for helping out in our booth, you both were lifesavers and thank you to EVERYONE that stopped by. We met so many amazing people and made some new friends, it was a GREAT day!! Don’t forget to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day for good luck, it is a day of four-leaved clovers, leprechauns, rainbows and pots o’ gold, the wearing of the green, and good luck. I will be sporting my green as my maiden name, McKinnon is Scottish/Irish, plus I don’t care to get pinched! I’m not sure why you get pinched if you don’t wear green, it’s kind of silly, I think it’s just an excuse to pinch someone, LOL :) Riding weather days will soon be here, you can look at our Events page and tell with all the rides, poker runs, rallies, cookouts and bike nights, YES Bike Nights, finally! The official first day of spring is March 20th, I say let’s plan a RIDE that day and celebrate riding season and Thunder Roads anniversary, what do you say? “Spiritual Filters”Spiritual filters are a lot like an oil filter that cleans the oil as it goes through an engine. We have a spiritual filter in our soul man where everything we’ve heard, seen or experienced is located. When we change oil we must change our oil filter or it’s just a waste of time. Same with our spiritual filter, when we come to Christ we must also change the filter, or what we see and hear will pass through our dirty filters. I have come to realize that some of my congregation still doesn’t get what I am trying to say, it’s because they are hearing through their dirty, clogged up spiritual filter. Things that clog up our spiritual filter could be our life experiences (before we met Christ) or it could be a legalistic religion we were once part of. Example; if you grew up in a Southern Baptist Church and visit a hard core Pentecostal church, your spiritual filter may explode; and you won’t receive all that you could have. There is a certain actress in a lot of movies that when I see her, it makes my skin crawl, and I don’t even know this woman and never met her, but she reminds me of someone I once knew. It’s a lot like “hoarders” who never throw anything away, you can’t even walk through their house for all the clutter. We have spiritual hoarders that retain everything they hear and never compare it to the Word of God for truth. Like “Grace and the Law” everybody wants God’s Grace but can’t let go of the Law. Jesus said in John 13:34 “A new commandment I give you.” Mat.22:40 “on these two commandments hang all the law and the Prophets.” Rom.8:14 “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law but under Grace.” Gal.3:13 “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law.” Your spiritual filter will influence your perception, that’s why so many Christian Religions talk about Grace but live under the Law. They live by a Law that was never intended for them. The Law was made for the Children of Israel (Jews) in the wilderness; it

was never intended for Gentiles. The Children of Israel wanted the Law so God gave it to them, the problem was that The Law tied God’s hands, He now could only respond to them by The Law. When you do good you get good, when you do bad you get bad. The Law was determined by what “You Do.” Grace is determined by what “God does.” Notice that before “The Law,” God brought them out of 400 years of slavery in Egypt, brought them out healthy and wealthy. God split the Red Sea and dried the ground, rained down bread from heaven, gave them water out of a rock, covered them with a cloud by day and a fire by night. None of which was determined by their goodness or badness, but by his Grace. After The Law was in place, every time they did something wrong, God would have to kill thousands of them, snakes bites, later the ground opened up and swallowed some more up. Religion has not changed much even from the days of Moses in the wilderness to this day, man still prefers The Law because man wants to be Holy by his own self-effort. Eph.2:8 “For by Grace are you saved through faith; and not of your selves: it is the gift of God” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

LEPRECHAUN’S STEAK & EGGS BENEDICT1 Piece a Person of Thick Bread; sour dough or I like raisin bread, a baquette, whatevs. Toast it up. 1 Minimum of a 16 oz. Strip Steak (if you marinadeit a half-hour out in mustard & Worcestershire sauce, it makes it a whole lot more tender and flavorful. 8 Large EggsQuality Margarine (I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter) or actual real Butter. Salt & Pepper to TasteBLENDER CHEESE SAUCE: 8 Egg Yolks4 Tbls. Lemon Juice Couple Dashes of Louisiana Hot SauceSalt & Pepper to Taste1 Cup of Unsalted Butter or Margarine; meltedIf you have a grill skillet use it to get the grill marks on the steak. Cook in a tab of margarine, on medi-um-high until good & caramelized (at least on front side). Once your steak is done the way you like it, put it on a plate and let it rest (resting allows all the juices to go back into the steak), while you make the rest of the recipe. In a separate large, non-stick skillet, put in a couple pats of margarine, let it melt down and skillet get hot and crack your eggs into it. Let cook till outer edges crisp up and flip. Remove not long after flipping. You want the yolks nice and creamy & runny. In blender, add all ingredients for 20 seconds, pour into the lid hole part, very slowly now, the melted butter just a little at a time or you’ll end up with scrambled eggs. Add your salt & pepper last. Cut your steak on the bias (opposite of the way the grain runs) and cut at a slant. Put your but-tered toast down, then layer 4 or 5 pieces of steak on the toast then drizzle the cheese sauce all over top. Garnish with some Parsley flakes. OMG! Break your eggs and let it all mix in together and dip your steak in it.....hot damn, this’ll make you pat your own backIt’s that damn good.

POT O’ GOLD LIL’ APPLE PIE CRESCENTS 1 Can of Sliced Apples w/ Sauce & Cinnamon1/2 Cup of Butter or Quality Margarine; melted1 Pkg. of Your Favoite Brand of Crescent Dinner Rolls 1 tsp. of Nutmeg 1 Tbls. of Light Brown Sugar In a small sauce pan, mix up and heat up, on low, all the ingredients apart from the Crescent Rolls. Heat up oven to 375 degrees. Crack open your can of rolls and smooth out on counter. Add a big Tablespoon of the warm (not hot) mixture to widest part of roll. Spread it all the way across. Slowly and carefully start wrapping. Fold one fold over mixture and gently push in each side to form like a little burrito. Continue to gently fold all the way till the pointed end. Lay out on a cookie sheet or round pan lined with alum. foil (but remember, the reflection makes them cook faster), but cook until golden brown and not a minute longer. Remove from oven and cover with alum. foil and tuck it in around bot-tom to keep hot while you make glaze. GLAZE: Mix together.......1 Cup of Confectioner’s Sugar2 tsps. of Lime Juice1 Tbls. of CinnamonMix until runny-thick consistency. Add a drop of water or two if need be. But dunk each crescent roll into the glaze mixture and let set up on a paper plate. These are exceptionally delicious with your hot coffee in the morning or with hot tea later in the day. Make up a BIG batch. They’re magically deliciious!

Easyriders Bike Show-NashvilleON FEBRUARY 7, EASYRIDERS MAGAZINE, brought their bike Show to the Hendersonville Expo Center. The event attracted local and national builders, top vendors, David Mann’s paintings, Purrfect Angelz, music, celebrities, and lots of attendees. In the lobby, welcoming the attendees was a display of military themed bikes, each representing one of the armed forces, provided by Rolling Thunder. Parking was at a premium, as lots (and fields) in the surrounding area soon filled up.Some of the better known builders and celebs were available for pictures and autographs. Paul Yaffe was at the Bagger Nation Display and John Shope was at Dirty Bird Concepts.

Michael Ballard of TV’s Full Throttle Saloon posed with Jessie James Dupree of the rock band, Jackyl. The appearance, of Tommy Flannagan (Chibs), of Sons of Anarchy, created long lines of fans seeking pictures and autographs. These appearances provided fans with seldom available opportunities to rub shoulders with some of the elite in the biker world.The husband and wife duo, Fahrenheit, accompanied by their band, alternated with the dancing of the Puurfect Angelz, to provide the stage entertainment. Besides being great entertainment, the shows’ seating provided much needed rest from the walking tour of the fabulous bikes on display. JOY Good-natured Joy is a 5 yrs old Puggle (Beagle/pug blend). She’s a gentle companion and loyal friend. Joy gets along with other dogs and people of all ages. She’s well mannered in the house and is house trained. She’s spayed, microchipped and current on vaccines. Adoption fee: $125

PIP Pip is one of those special dogs that you can’t forget. She’s good with kids and dogs, excellent on leash and has been through basic obedience. Pip is a 4 yr old Rat Terrier mix. Pip is an excellent house mate and is house trained. She’s spayed, microchipped and current on vaccines. Adoption fee: $125

TILLY & TOBY These two Retriever-Boxer blends were surrendered when their family could no longer afford them. We think they’ll be about 50 pounds when full grown – they are about 9 mos old now. Both pups walk well on leash, get along with other dogs, are crated trained, and will make excellent companions. They are gentle and affectionate with a touch of puppy goofiness. The pups are spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Adoption fee: $150 each or $200 for the pair

CLAIRE & JAIMIEThe mystery pups – we don’t really know for sure what breed mix they are. Our best guess is toy American Eskimo mix. They were abandoned at night in a box. Claire and Jaimie get along with other dogs, children and adults. We think they are about 4 months old and will be 15 or so pounds when grown. The pups are spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Adoption fee: $150 each or $200 for the pair

The Valentine’s After Hours Party & Bachelor/Bachelorette Charity Auction

If you are trying to raise money for a great charity like the Williamson County Animal Center, you’ve got to go big. If you are doing it around Valentine’s Day, why not make it about love…or something like it. That’s what the crew at Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs did, Betsy and LaVonda rounded up a group of Bachelors, and Bachelorettes, and auctioned off a date with each one, including dinner from a sponsoring restaurant, to the highest bidder. The party kicked off with food and drinks, vendors, and live music was provided by one of the Bachelorettes, singer songwriter Amanda Page Cornett. The biding started with dates with some lovely Bachelorettes on the auction block. The guys started the bidding a little slow, but went up quickly, and some lucky bidders walked away looking forward to their dates. Then it was time for the women to bid on the Bachelors. The ladies weren’t as bashful about bidding as the guys were, so the bidding was fast and furious, and they had fun doing

it. The bachelors ended up with great dates, but the real winners were the animals. At the end of the night, lots of money was raised for the Williamson County Animal Center, and that was what it was all about!


THUNDER ROADS TENNESSEE is proud to announce, this spring, we will be introducing a state-wide, summer long riding challenge

hitting great destinations and events across the state.

The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run! It’s a riding contest unlike any you have ever seen,

and features great prizes every month!

HOW IT WORKSEach month, Thunder Roads Tennessee will announce a list of Tennessee Thunder Run Ride Stops. These stops are selected based on recommendations of our readers, and confirmed by our editors. Some of the Ride Stops, will be designated Registration stops. Riders can stop by any registration stop and pick up a card, register it so we can contact winners and you are ready to go. You only have to give your contact info once when you register your card, then you can go to any ride stop location in the state and “check in” just by presenting your card at each location. Once a rider has “checked-in” at a stop – their card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also randomly select rider check-ins from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads Tennessee and our sponsors and will include some very exciting prizes. They may include riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and many others.This is a contest about riding. The beauty, and simplicity of the program is that anyone can win, with any check-in, but your

chances of winning increase the more you ride! The dedicated rider, crisscrossing the state has a greater chance of winning, but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the drawing for that Ride Stop, and also the state wide drawings each month, so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea, to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

STATE AND STOP PRIZESEvery month the Thunder Roads Tennessee staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop, and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of April.That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!


THE WINNERSIf your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads Tennessee will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in.• Some prize drawings are specific to only check-ins for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long.• ALL CHECK-INS remain in the system for end of the season prizes!• Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

BONUS CHECK-INS!The 2015 Tennessee Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads Tennessee as part of the Stop Listing.

IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE!1. Get your Thunder Roads Tennessee “Ride n’ Win” Ride Card.2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Tennessee Magazine, our website (ThunderRoadsTennessee.com), or our Facebook page3. Ride out to the listed stops and show them your card.4. And then you could win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Tennessee Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards. Thunder Roads Tennessee will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride, or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering their cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Tennessee Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. WAITING FOR RIDING

SEASON

Well dear readers it is that time of year again where we get cabin fever patiently waiting for the riding season to return. Yeah, I am aware that we can ride most of the year in Tennessee but let’s face it, it’s just not near as enjoyable as it is when the grass is green, trees have leaves, the sun bears down on our skin while we cruise the back roads taking in the views, sounds, and smells of the Volunteer State. Not to mention the important fact that when it is warmer the ladies don’t wear near as many clothes. :)

Working at S & G Custom Cycles brings me in contact with riders all over the US and several foreign countries. Throughout the year I get lots of photos sent to me in emails, posts of Facebook, and such, and I save some that catch my eye from either a unique bike, unusual pose, or a damn fine looking lady. Here are a few of my favs from 2014. Hope you like them and see ya on the road soon!!!!!!


Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee:

Is it just me or is there a lot of really troubling stuff in the news? Oil prices climbing, the Army paying for sex changes for traitors, beheading of Christians by ISIS and Jeff Gordon retiring after this NASCAR season. Well, maybe Jeff Gordon retiring isn’t all that bad. I personally prefer Little “E” even though I wish he wouldn’t stay out so late before a race.

I can’t make up my mind if the world is coming to an end or not. I’m sure the dinosaurs had similar misgivings before they decided to become fossils. I know I’m looking into bio-diesel, wearing a cup and taller collars just in case. I appreciate the articles in Thunder Roads on guns and aspects of personal protection. I’ve been looking into box magazine fed pistols and short rifles that will fit in a saddlebag, seat mounted holsters and foot boards made with a compartment for transporting a pistol. I was one of the first folks in the state to get a concealed carry permit when Tennessee passed a statewide law in 1994 to allow them. I had applied before that but prior to 1994 permits were approved by the chief of police and my application sat in his inbox for about 18 months. He was a die-hard liberal caving to an anti-gun mayor.

I am very supportive of the police. I have a brother who is a retired motorcycle officer. He is quick to let you know that police don’t prevent crime they just resolve crimes and attempt to control criminals. Their presence is a deterrent but they aren’t standing guard on your house, car or business. If a criminal wants to rob someone the victim is on their own for a period of time until the police learn about the robbery and arrive on the scene. If you want

a sense of what that’s like get a stop watch. Start the time when

you run through your front door. Run to the

bedroom open drawers, grab a few valuables and run back out the

front door. Hit the button when you pass through the doorway. TV’s and heavy

stuff slows you down but I’ll bet you can do it a lot faster than someone can call the

police and get a police car in your driveway.

Ladies, I don’t have to tell you about sexual assault. You

know how fast your boyfriend or husband can be. Do you think the police could arrive fast enough to intervene and stop an assault? I’ve never understood why women seem to be the last ones to support self-defense when they are most likely to become a victim.

So do the police keep you safe or do they go find the criminal after the crime? More often than not they go track down the criminal after the crime but they don’t have the manpower to solve every crime. Even the police need help and have to rely on luck, helpful tips and dumb criminals to solve many crimes. I’m very thankful we have them but you are most likely on your own until they arrive and after they leave.

In the 21 years I’ve had a carry permit I’ve never had to pull my weapon and fire to defend myself. One big reason is that I stay aware of who and what is happening around me. I keep a distance between me and potential trouble. I eyeball cars rolling slow by my house and nobody pulls into my driveway without the dogs going berserk. When I’m on the bike I keep a safety zone around me and watch for nut case drivers. We all know there are a few hostile idiots out there who are inclined to abuse motorcycle riders. Avoidance is the first course of action but you never know when you might have to shoot back in defense. Have you gone to the woods and practiced drawing and shooting while riding? Generally it is a left hand event. Shooting offhand is not optimal and if you think you might have to do it, I highly recommend practicing. We live in troubling times and the wise person stays prepared.

If you’re lucky and prepared you may rack up 21 years of unmolested life. I’m working on a personal record of 50 but that requires exercise and health. Not sure I can do it with all of the biker rallies and fun to be had later this year.

Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. An Evening with ChibsA s a special treat for a limited number of its customers, Boswell’s Harley-Davidson hosted a meet

and greet with “Chibs”, the night before the Nashville Easy Riders Magazine Bike Show. Tommy Flanagan, who portrayed Filip “Chibs” Tilford, President of TV’s Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, was on hand to pose for pictures and sign autographs for the guests. In addition, Flanagan led

a ride from the Ring of Fire dealership to the Hendersonville Expo Center, the next morning.Factoid: “Chibs” means scars in Scottish. Flanagan’s scars are real, received when he was mugged in his home country of Scotland! These scars, one on each side of his face, are also known as “Glasgow Grins”.Boswell’s provided the guests with bountiful tables of food and, of course, a full bar of adult beverages. Brian James and the Revival provided music, while the guests awaited “Chibs” arrival. It was a great event. The highlight, “Chibs’” , kept the guests waiting for two hours, but the faithful didn’t mind, once he showed up to fulfill the fan’s, mostly young ladies, dreams. He was hugged and kissed, and signed autographs, until the last guest was satisfied. Even Thunder Roads Magazine’s own, Denise High, endured the long lines and got her hug and autographed copy of the magazine. Flanagan and everyone else showed the most love for the Boswell’s shop dog, Misty Blue.On Saturday morning most of the fans endured the wait for Flanagan to arrive and lead them to the bike Show. Boswell’s wisely reserved a parking area for the bikes at the show. Parking at the Expo proved a challenge for most attendees, as the lot quickly filled. Later arrivals filled a corporate lot down the street, the shopping center’s lot and a grass field adjacent to Old Shackle Island Road. Also seen at the

dealership was Keifer Thompson, who with his wife, Shawna, forms the country duo, Thompson Square. Keifer was riding his bright gold and black custom bike. We also met Jerry Ripley, the Editor-in Chief, of Raw Bike Magazine, in town for the Easy Rider’s show. Flanagan resumed posing and signing autographs for long lines of fans at the bike show. I recently spent $6,500 on a young registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd but he just ate grass and wouldn’t even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyhow, I had the Vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day. The bull started to service the cows within two days… all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor’s cows! He’s like a machine! I don’t know what was in the pills the Vet gave him, but they kind of taste like peppermint. ____________________________________________________

Was in the Texas Rose Road House bar last night after riding my bike all day. waiting for a beer, when a butt-ugly, big ole’ heifer came up behind me, and slapped me on the ass. She hollered out, “Hey sexy, how bout’ givin’ me your number!I looked at her and said, “Have you got a pen?”She said, “I surely do, sweet cheeks.”I said, “Well, you better get back into it before the Farmer notices you’re missing.”My dental surgery is on Friday!

“My bike is a 2008 Harley Davidson StreetGlide (FLHX). Custom paint by Fine & Sons Body Shop in East Ridge, TN., pearl white and viking purple paint, 18” Twin Peaks Ape Hangers from LA Choppers, straight pipe exhaust from Samson, king tourpak off an Ultra Classic, wheels off an ElectraGlide, Kuryakyn driving lights, 300 purple LED undercarriage light kit, and riding on Metzler 888’s. I bought this motorcycle with 13,000 miles on it 5 days after a wreck in December of 2012 where I totaled a 2012 RoadGlide. It now has 57,000 miles on it. The bike was solid pearl white, that was until cockiness and over confidence caused me to lay it down on July 1st of 2014. A friend of mine, Dusty Fine came to the house the very next day and took it back to his shop. I told him that we’ve got 29 days to rebuild it. Every body panel was damaged or destroyed except for the rear fender. Fast forward 29 days, July 31st 2014. Dusty was still assembling the last little bit when I got to the shop around 5pm, at 6:30pm we pushed it out of the shop and I took it for a test run. 3,229 miles later after a stop for a few days in Sturgis, SD and still bandaged up from the wreck a month prior, I returned to Chattanooga with a flawless test run.

I am a very active member of the Freedom Riders MC and very active within the Chattanooga Motorcycling Community. I’ve lived in many different cities, in a few different states. The Chattanooga Motorcycling Community is the strongest one I’ve been a part of. Doesn’t matter what you ride, sport bike, cruiser, chopper, bagger, metric or domestic, we stand as one! I am very passionate about my clubs annual Make-A-Wish Poker Run. I often find myself asking the question “what if…?” What if forks weren’t called forks? What if no one had invented drinking straws? Who sat down and actually decided that toilet paper was a necessity, not just

a luxury? And what did their friends and family think and say when these inventors announced their fabulous plans to change the world one convenience item at a time? I’m sure that Martin Cooper’s wife probably thought to herself “What in the hell is he thinking??” when he shared his idea in 1973 to revolutionize the world with the modern day cell phone…but we all know how that turned out for him. So this thought process has lead me to the following question… Who in the hell sat down and looked at their bicycle, and with what I assume was complete and utter disappointment in its slow moving, two wheeled existence and said…”I can make that bitch fly!” Well that person just happened to be a Massachusetts born son of a carpenter, named Sylvester Howard Roper. Roper made his living as a machinist in Boston, but began inventing at an early age. By the age of twelve he had constructed a small stationary engine, and at only fourteen a locomotive engine. Roper continued to invent throughout his life, including guns, sewing machines, and finally steam powered carriages and bicycles.You may be saying to yourself, a steam powered bicycle is not a motorcycle, but I believe it is clearly a predecessor to our modern day two wheeled objects of affection. Riding on two wheels began with a primitive push bike on which the rider sat, but there were no pedals. The rider propelled himself forward by pushing his/her feet on the ground (a Flintstone’s bike if you will). Next came the high wheelers with a huge front wheel and a small rear wheel, and nearly impossible to ride. Finally came the “safety bicycle”. Quite the invention in and of itself considering it had wheels of equal size, as well as a set of pedals to drive the rear wheel through a chain linkage. The evolution of two wheel travel continued and it became a common means of personal transportation. Later it would come to be seen as a “racing” vehicle, so of course it wouldn’t be long until someone looked at the bicycle and knew that it had a higher purpose. An evolutionary need to be better, and by better of course I mean faster. I like to imagine that Roper arrived home after a long day to his little inventors shop out back, tired after a long day, and an even longer ride home on his bicycle. He sits down with a cold one and stares at his two wheeler…”stupid bike anyway. No worldly reason it should take me so long to get home each night. Keeps me from working on the things I love.” Then it hits him…the light bulb moment…”I’m gonna make this SOB fly!” Fast forward through hours and hours of painstaking disappointment and doubt to the design that actually works, and Ta-Daa! The first motorcycle is born.The year is 1869, and the world was about to change. History

states that when Roper began riding his two wheeled contraption it was not well received. It apparently spooked horses, and was loud, as well as emitting a noxious odor when he rode through town. Rumor has it, he was actually arrested once for riding it, but had

to be released when it was determined they could not find any laws he was actually breaking….and; the modern day biker was born.Interestingly, this first model anticipated many modern motorcycle features. Roper used one steam cylinder of 2 ¼” bore by

2 ½” stroke to either side of the frame behind the seat and connected piston rods to cranks on the rear wheel axle. A firebox and boiler were suspended on springs attached to the hickory wood frame between the wheels. Piston valves for the cylinders were operated by eccentrics adjacent to their cranks, and the water pump was operated by the left-cylinder crank. Exhaust steam was carried via tubing into a short chimney projecting up from behind the saddle. A coal fire heated the water stored in a reservoir that was constructed as a part of the seat and generated steam to run the engine. While this model utilized a twisting hand grip to serve as throttle control, and also had a cable that was attached to the handlebars to allow for breaking, it was still quite primitive in design. The operating temperature was nearly 300 degrees Fahrenheit between the rider’s legs, and the travel distance was extremely limited. A second model Roper designed later boasted a one gallon water reservoir and allowed for rides up to eight miles in length.June 1st, 1896 Roper would showcase this model at the Charles River bicycle racetrack in Boston. The idea was to test the motorcycles viability as a pace-making machine for bike races. Initially Roper covered a mile in 2 minutes and 12 seconds…that’s roughly 30 miles per hour. Elated by his results, 70 year old Roper apparently got that old feeling again, and decided he could definitely go faster. Flying around the 1/3 mile wooden track he lost control on the back stretch and was thrown from his bike into the surrounding sand. Sylvester Howard Roper was pronounced dead at the scene, but later it was determined it was not a result of the accident itself, but rather heart failure. I don’t know about you, but seems to me he must have died a happy man. Both of Roper’s steam powered motorbikes were purchased by museums…the original steam powered bike still residing at the Smithsonian. While Roper’s motorcycles never found commercial success, they surely provided a source of inspiration and direction for inventors in the gas-powered motorbike era. The semi-automatic AR-15 is the most popular rifle in the United States. There are several reasons for this. One is that following every major conflict that the U.S. has fought, the veterans of that conflict have sought to acquire firearms similar to those they used to fight with. Following World War I, there was a great move in the U.S. to adopt the bolt-action rifle. Prior to that time, the

lever-action rifle was the most common variety encountered in the fields and woods during hunt-ing seasons. Following World War II, there was significantly increased interest in semi-automatic rifles. And, following the Vietnam War and the conflicts in the Middle East it is only naturalto expect interest in the AR-15 rifle to grow as millions of veterans returned to civilian life.A second reason is the flexibility that the AR-platform offers. Unlike earlier guns, the AR rifles can be easily modified by the owner without having to resort to the use of a trained gunsmith to perform the work. Probably the greatest flexibility is a result of using an adjustable stock and the variety of sights that can be used on the gun. The adjustable stock means that it can be easily adapted to shooters of different sizes. In the past when non-adjustable stocks were the norm, each shooter basically had to have their own dedicated rifle or they had to adapt their shooting fundamentals (grip and stance) to enable them to use the unmodified gun. Obviously this does not contribute to good marksmanship like “fitting” the gun to the shooter would.In addition to the adjustable stock, the pistol grip and location of the other “controls” on the AR-15 make it very ergonomic for the user. Since they don’t have to concentrate on the controls, they can focus their attention on shooting. The .223/5.56mm cartridge also contributes to the popularity. The rifle is easy for just about anyone to shoot as it does not produce “punishing” recoil when fired. As a result, it is popular among shooters of smaller stature—women and children. But, you are not limited to the .223/5.56mm. You can change calibers easily with the AR-style rifle by simply replacing the “upper” assembly with one in the caliber of your choice—provided it will fit within the AR’s “form-factor”. You may or may not be able to use the same magazines for the new caliber’s ammunition as you can for the original caliber. Still another factor in the popularity of the AR-15 is probably related to politics. When gun control advocates say they want to ban something, that just serves to increase the popularity of that item as people rush to buy them while they still can. And, once they have them, owners have discov-ered that the AR-15 is a fun gun to shoot. Because there are so many of them in the hands of American citizens, it is only natural that they be considered for use in self-defense. Given that it was originally used as a military weapon, the utility for self-defense seems to be assumed. However, some configurations of the AR-15 are more suited to self-defense than others. Those in the carbine configuration with the collapsible butt-stock and shorter barrels seem most appropriate for self-defense as they are easier to maneuver in the narrow confines of hallways and rooms. The caliber is a proven man-stopper. The lack of recoil makes it easier to make accurate follow-up shots if needed. The light-weight bullets do not over penetrate and thus are of less concern in crowded urban environments.

LONG GUNS FOR SELF-DEFENSE: THE AR-15 (aka The Modern Sporting Rife)

Having a detachable magazine makes the AR-15 rifle easy to reload. Magazines come in 5, 10, 20, 30-round capacity, and some with even larger capacities. (Note, in Ohio you are limited to using nothing larger than a 30-round magazine for a total capacity in your firearm of 31 rounds of ammunition.) The 30-round magazine is the standard for the AR-15 platform.However, the AR-15 is not something that is easily adaptable for “concealed carry”. It is a little too large for that role, although it works well as a “home defense” firearm. So, should you consider the AR-platform to fulfill your self-defense needs? It certainly does if you are not concerned about “concealed carry” when you are out in public. With millions of Americans already having one, it should be an easy choice. Plus, it has one other advantage. Unlike most handguns, an AR-15 rifle is adaptable for multiple uses—hunting, predator control, etc., not just self-defense. Just another example of the gun’s flexibility.

US Court Rules Residency Requirements for Pistol Buys is UnconstitutionalFebruary, 11, 2015A federal district court in Texas ruled residency requirements for pistol purchases is unconsti-tutional, directly challenging Attorney General Eric Holder who has argued the federal ban on handguns outside of a person’s state of residence doesn’t violate the second amendment.In the case, federally licensed firearms dealer Frederic Russell Mance Jr. of Texas and gun buyers Tracey and Andrew Hanson sued Mr. Holder and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Director B. Todd Jones claiming the federal ban on the sale of handguns outside of one’s state stops the formation of a national handgun market.The Hansons, who live in Washington, visited Mr. Mance’s Texas store in June and were un-able to buy handguns because of the ban. The ban effectively “reduces competition, raises prices and limits consumer choices,” their joint lawsuit, which was filed in July, alleged.Mr. Holder and the Department of Justice aimed to dismiss the suit, claiming the plaintiffs had no standing, and were dealt no harm. Mr. Holder also argued, the Second Amendment is “silent” as to the ability to sell or buy handguns “in any particular forum” and that courts have “repeatedly declined” to rule that right is protected.“Here, the court’s inquiry can end at step one because the challenged laws do not impose any burden, let alone a substantial burden, on conduct historically protected by the Second Amendment,” Mr. Holder’s motion said.However, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, disagreed.“Court finds that defendants’ motion to dismiss should be and is hereby denied,” it said in a brief filed Wednesday. “Defendants argue Mance has suffered no injury…As stated above, Mance was unable to consummate the sale of handguns to the Hansons...the loss of sale is clearly an injury to Mance in his own right.”The court’s decision is “huge breaking news,” said Matthew Bergstrom, a managing attorney at Arsenal Attorneys, a second-amendment law firm, in an email. “So a Texan could now walk into a Virginia gun dealer and buy a pistol. Huge decision.”He added a stay and appeal from the Department of Justice is likely.

What goes better with cold weather than Chili, I know I love a good bowl of Chili on a cold night. You can eat my chili from a plate with a fork, it’s a little thick, not for everybody but I like it. I think most people think their Chili is pretty good, so our friends at Appleton H-D held their 10th Annual Chili cook off just see who makes the best this year. I didn’t try them all, but the 5 or 6 I did try were all good. I guess one of the ones I didn’t get to try was spectacular. Nate Contreras won best overall Chili, Most Unique name (Bambi’s Last Supper) and best Wild Game! They were out by the time I got to them, it must have been something special. After Nate and his crew collected all of the prizes, they had a Jalapeno eating contest, and Phillip Pierce was crowned “Hottie of the year”. If you think you make some good chili, bring it out next year, but if Nate comes back, it had better be great!

ANTI-PROFILING BILL INTRODUCED IN CALIFORNIA

Legislation aimed to curb anti-biker profiling has been introduced in California. Citing anecdotal evidence that Golden State motorcyclists tend to get pulled over unjustly, Assemblyman Ken Cooley (D-Rancho Cordova) authored a bi-partisan bill that would have police officers undergo training emphasizing that profiling of motorcycle riders is prohibited. The measure seeks “to ensure that anyone entering law enforcement in California knows the ground rules to apply the law fairly without regard for irrelevant factors of, ‘I’m on a bike’ or they’re dressed a certain way,” Cooley said, adding that “it is an important issue of people being secure in their persons and the administration of traffic laws.” Assembly Bill 334 would add Section 13519.17 to the Penal Code, relating to the profiling of motorcycle riders: “This bill would require the Commission on Peace Officer Standards And Training to ensure that the profiling of motorcycle riders is addressed in the course of basic law enforcement training and offered to law enforcement officers in conjunction with existing training regarding profiling,” according to the Legislative Counsel’s Digest. Assembly Bill 334 would also require law enforcement agencies to create policies barring discrimination against riders.

NEW MEXICO HELMET LAW OPPOSEDDespite the fact that helmet legislation has only recently been introduced in New Mexico, and not passed as yet by the state legislature nor signed into law, “I have received two complaints that in the last few days riders have been pulled over for no helmet use by city police in Albuquerque and have been given a verbal warning,” reports Annette Torrez, chairperson for the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) and member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) board of directors. “There is NO Mandatory helmet law in NM for any one over age 18, you can not be pulled over for the sole reason you are not wearing a helmet. This is profiling of motorcyclists,” added Torrez, who further suggests that; “The only way to address this is, if you get pulled over please get the officer name, badge number and car number and notify NMMRO (www.thenmmro.org).”

In the meantime, the national office of the U.S. Defenders (www.usdefender.net) has issued a nationwide CALL TO ACTION to oppose the two current helmet bills which were introduced into the 2015 legislature; Senate Bill 327 Requiring the use of helmets for all motorcycle operator and passengers, and Senate Bill 308 creating a distinctive motorcycle validation sticker ($692) allowing qualified operators and passengers to refrain from wearing a safety helmet. “We must unite and fight this or by this summer it could be mandatory for every biker to wear a helmet in New Mexico,” according to the US Defenders’ CTA, which goes on to state; “We were told that the Centers for Disease Control are following this bill in New Mexico as a pilot program if it passes for other states in the future.”

TEXAS LEGISLATION WOULD ALLOW RIDERS TO LANE SPLIT IF HELMETED

One of the latest proposals by some Texas lawmakers to help alleviate traffic congestion is to legalize lane splitting. Lane splitting (or lane sharing, or “filtering”) allows motorcyclists to pass vehicles by riding in-between lanes of traffic. State Senator Kirk Watson and State Representative Sergio Muñoz Jr. have both filed bills to legalize the practice. According to House Bill 813, introduced by Rep. Muñoz (D-Palmview), motorcycle riders would be allowed to ride between lanes of traffic moving in the same direction, if traffic is traveling 20 mph or slower, and if the motorcyclist is not traveling more than 5 mph faster than other traffic. Lane splitting would be prohibited in school zones and in areas where the posted speed limit is 20 mph or less. However, HB 813 would also require that riders and passengers must wear helmets. Senate Bill 442, introduced by Sen. Watson (D-Austin), does not include the helmet provision, but lane splitting would be restricted to controlled-access highways. “Filtering” is common in Europe and Asia to alleviate congestion in urban areas, but in the U.S., only California allows the maneuver.

INDIANA SCOOTER RIDERS FACE NEW REGULATIONS

Indiana officials are warning motor scooter drivers that starting January 1 they’ll need license plates on those bikes. Legislators have approved Indiana’s first license requirements for scooters, and under the new law drivers of scooters with engines of 50 cubic centimeters or less will need to buy license plates and pass a Bureau of Motor Vehicles test involving road signals and signs. Operators of scooters with larger engines will be required to follow motorcycle requirements, including holding a valid motorcycle license or learner’s permit. Evansville police officials told a legislative committee that scooters had often been involved in accidents and used in crimes such as robberies, but that the owners couldn’t be found because they lacked any registration. The new law doesn’t require insurance for drivers of the smaller scooters, and the registration will cost $26.35, plus a $10 excise tax. Law sponsor Representative Dave Wolkins (R-Winona Lake) said not requiring a driver’s license for scooter operators was important because he felt it was necessary that those with drunken driving convictions still have a way to get to work.

Introduced by Reps Karen Fann (R-Prescott) and Chad Campbell (D-Phoenix), HB-2345 would amend ARS 28-964 to

remove the restriction which specifies that a person cannot operate a motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle or motor driven cycle equipped with handlebars positioned so the operator’s hands are above their shoulders when the operator is sitting and their hands are on the handlebar grips. The bi-partisan measure would also eliminate the requirement for motorcycles to be equipped with handrails for passengers. In addition, Arizona bikers are fighting a similar “pay-to-play” bill as in New Mexico, as House Bill 2607 seeks to require use of a helmet for all motorcyclists unless the rider pays a fee for exemption (amount to be determined), or face a $500 fine for non-compliance.

U.S. MOTORCYCLE SALES CONTINUE UPWARD TREND

The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) reports motorcycle sales increased 3.8% for 2014. A total of 483,526 motorcycles were sold during the calendar year, an increase of 17,743 units over 2013. Off-Highway motorcycles registered the highest percentage year-over-year growth at 10.9%, with the On-Highway and Dual segments tallying 3.0 and 3.6% respectively. Scooter sales were the only two-wheeled segment to decline last year, down 3.5%. Meanwhile, ATV sales showed a steady 0.5% rate of growth. The 2014 motorcycle sales total marks the fourth consecutive year of modest growth since the market bottomed out in 2010 at 439,678 units sold. Annual motorcycles sales have since increased by 440,899 (2011), 452,386 (2012) and 465,783 (2013) to its current 483,526 total. This gradual recovery follows the dramatic decline of the motorcycle market during the recession, when annual motorcycle sales plummeted from 879,910 in 2008 to 520,502 in 2009.
