In this issue we bring you a low down on all the January shows – Top Drawer, Home, Craft, Handmade in Britain, ChristmasWorld, Giving & Living, Christmas & Gift, Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring and Wales Spring Fair. Phew, that’s enough trade shows to keep you busy buying for the year ahead!

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, it’s also time to stock up for the month of love. Turn to P37

for some inspiration. We explore the hand-made market on P21 and bring you a selection of ideas for gifts under £10 on P29. There’s also a selection of fashion accessories (P43), fair trade items (P49) and eco friendly gifts (P53) to inspire you.

This issue has been a particularly sentimental one to work on, as it will be my last one as Editor. I will be moving on to pastures new, but I’m happy to announce that the Gift Focus reigns will be handed over to Rachel Westall. You can contact Rachel on [email protected].

The giftware market has been a wonderful sector to work in. I’ve met some fabulous people, attended some great shows and really enjoyed my time at Gift Focus. It’s been interesting to follow the trends over the last three years. A visit to Top Drawer and Autumn Fair in September left me wanting to purchase everything woodland-related, from fox glasses to hedgehog cushions! I’ll still be keeping an eye on trends for 2015 and seeing what the next topics of interest will be.

All that’s left for me to say is have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year one and all!

Truly London scoops Best Online Gift Retailer at Online Retail AwardsThe online retail community gathered at The Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington last month for the Online Retail Awards.

Truly London, a specialist provider of luxury gift experiences that believes an experience makes the best kind of gift, was awarded Best Online Gift Retailer. From Michelin-starred dining and five-star spas to outdoor adventures and once-in-a-lifetime escapes, the Truly concierge team is there to help. The judges said the website “Does full justice to this impeccable service.”

The Letteroom, a one-of-a-kind online gift business, received a Commendation. Items on offer include products inspired by typography and the alphabet in various forms and languages. At theletteroom.com, the hassle is removed from finding that just-right gift.

PMC launches new website and appPersonalised Memento Company had a fantastic response to its new app and website launch at Autumn Fair earlier this month. It’s now even easier to sell personalised gifts; if you’re an independent retailer you can browse, add to basket and complete payment for a personalised gift all through the iPad app. What’s more, you can also now connect your website straight to its new affiliate website and include your company logo and branding for a seamless link to personalised gifts. Walking stick specialist Classic Canes launches new 60-page trade catalogueClassic Canes is celebrating its 32nd year in business with a new, 60-page trade catalogue. The brochure illustrates the 600+ range of walking sticks, seat sticks and umbrellas, from everyday designs to fine collectors’ canes.

The product photography is interspersed with the stylish and eye-catching lifestyle photography for which Classic Canes is well known. Charlotte Gillian, Managing Partner, explains, “For a supplier, producing a new trade catalogue is a big and usually expensive event. However, even in this age of digital communication it would be a brave marketing department that decided to dispense entirely with a printed catalogue. Far more of our customers order from the catalogue than as yet log onto our website. It seems the desire to sit down with a coffee, turn pages and make notes is not as passé as some web designers would maintain.”

To receive a copy of the catalogue, T: +44 (0)1460 75686 or visit www.classiccanes.co.uk.

Gift of the Year 2015 launchedThe Giftware Association launched the 2015 Gift of the Year competition at Autumn Fair in September. Talent spotters scouted the halls for suitable products to be presented to a panel of retailer judges that will include Anna Rigby, Head of Buying Home Accessories, Gifts and Seasonal for the John Lewis Partnership.

Many of this year’s successful Gift of the Year companies were exhibiting at the show and spoke enthusiastically about what winning had meant to them.

Half Moon Bay was a triple winner, claiming the Branded/Character and Hot Novelty Awards for its Cadbury Roses Puzzle and the Kitchen and Dining prize for the McDougall’s Flour Shaker. Ben Craddock, Marketing Manager for the company, says, “Gift of the Year has certainly helped to sell those products which won their categories and, in the case of the Cadbury Roses Puzzle, it boosted sales of our Jelly Babies puzzle too.” Half Moon Bay promoted its Gift of the Year successes in various ways, including the use of special stickers for the products, which Ben says has really helped retailers.

Julie Holmes, Managing Director of Wild-Olive – winner of the Bath, Body and Spa category with its Luxury Bath Melts – was enthusiastic about the publicity that the award had brought her company, and added, “Gift of the Year gave me a real lift six years ago when we were highly commended. Wild-Olive was then a brand new company and we needed feedback. It told us that we were doing something right.” The business was subsequently shortlisted another four times before winning.

Marina Bolin, Owner and Founder of Bolin Webb, admitted to being very emotional when her company won the Premium and Luxury category with the R1 Razor with Stand. “To win in our third year was a fantastic achievement. I’m passionate about this product, but to have somebody else confirming that it’s a good thing was lovely. Winning Gift of the Year is another confirmation of who we are.”

AppointmentWiddop Bingham has welcomed Dee Waterworth to the sales team as National Account Manager. She’s joined the six-strong National Account team and will play a major role in the continuing development of this particular sector of the market place.

Dee comes from a strong sales and product development background, having worked for Hallmark for 16 years.

Introducing Jarloc® – a new solution to candle theft Launched in September, Jarloc® is a brand new solution to prevent candle theft. Many retailers report theft of glass jar candles as a particular problem and losses can be as high as 30 per cent of turnover, impacting both stock availability and devouring profi t margins.

Until now, retailers have gone to great lengths to deter theft, including removing the lid of the jar, reducing stock holdings and applying security tags.

Jarloc® is the brainchild of Jeremy Davies, Managing Director of GCS (GB), provider of the HTA security advice line and retail security specialist. It’s a standalone, reusable security device specifi cally designed to protect glass jar candles from theft. The device fi ts snugly inside the top of the jar and locks into place, preventing access to the wick. The lid fi ts on top and the candle can be displayed as normal.

Jeremy says, “The problem of protecting glass jar candles from theft has been very diffi cult to solve. The shape of the jar doesn’t lend itself to the existing range of security tags available in the market. Signifi cant investment in product development and a new approach to an old problem was needed, ensuring effective protection for all retailers, not just those equipped with security tagging systems. Jarloc® provides retailers with the confi dence to improve product availability to the consumer through increased shelf stock holding, leading to increased sales while managing stock less effectively.”

For further information including demonstration videos, visit www.jarloc.com.

Beer Buddies is a one-of-a-kind British success story launched in Cornwall three years ago by Designer Seamus Morgan and fellow Director Richard House. The products are created and sculpted in Cornwall and are now sold worldwide.

The wall-mounted bottle openers are just as well suited for the outdoor/barbeque market as next to the fridge indoors, and they retail at £25.

Record breaking Home & Gift show This summer’s Home & Gift was a great success, with thousands of orders resulting in a record breaking stand re-book rate of more than 60 per cent, exceeding previous years across all five show sectors.

Buyers at this year’s event were kept busy with a reinvigorated social atmosphere and business-friendly environment. From the buzzing Buyer’s Festival to several new and exciting showcases dotted around the venue, there were plenty of new products to be discovered.

The 2014 show saw the launch of the all-new bira Retail Clinic. The British Independent Retailers Association provides a range of workshops and seminars, giving the retailers an opportunity to have a one-to-one talk to industry specialists. Covering everything from e-commerce and mobile marketing to branded carrier bags and changes to pension laws, the experts were prepared to answer all of the retailers’ questions to give their trading a well-deserved boost. bira also presented a seminar called 30 Ways to Improve your Business in 30 minutes, giving retailers an achievable, short list of ways to improve their business.

“This is the first year of a three-year investment into the show, and what you’ve seen is only the tip of the iceberg!” says Cleere Scamell, Show Director of Home & Gift. “We aim to innovate and reintroduce new content to stay ahead of the ever-changing retail sector, and this year’s record breaking re-book rate made it clear that our efforts paid off. The Buyer’s Festival was an astonishing success and gave exhibitors a new way to meet clients and potential buyers.” The Buyer’s Festival saw buskers, brass bands and blue tones introduced at this year’s event to create a one-of-a-kind festival atmosphere.

Home & Gift returns next year between 19th - 22nd July, 2015. You can register your interest for next year’s show at www.homeandgift.co.uk/register.

Stand bookings up for The London Stationery ShowThe London Stationery Show continues to go from strength to strength following this year’s successful event. In August, stand bookings for April’s exhibition were more than 30 per cent up on the same time last year, with confirmed new exhibitors including Parker, Paperblanks, Sambro International, Portico Design, Bong, Papermate, Quadrille Design, Penfold Card & Gift, Tallon, Two Little Boys, Tesa, Parax Paper and Olfa.

The 2015 show takes place on 28th - 29th April at the Business Design Centre, Islington and will again be part of National Stationery Week.

The Stationery Show is now in its fifth year, and is the leading UK exhibition for writing instruments and all things stationery. It makes stationery buying easy for retailers with the products of more than two hundred different suppliers from around the world all in one place.

“It’s a real plus for the industry to have something like the London Stationery Show. It’s great to have stationery all under one roof,” says Alexandra Miles, Stationery Buyer at Sainsburys. Clare Northwood, Buyer Stationery at John Lewis agrees, “I find the London Stationery Show relevant because it provides the opportunity for me to view true stationery suppliers under one roof. Many other exhibitions are more gift inspired and whilst useful for sourcing some ranges, they lack a stationery focus.”

Visit www.stationeryshow.co.uk to find out more.

More orders than expected at TendenceTendence closed its doors with increased exhibitor and visitor figures. Approximately 35,000 trade visitors from 88 countries took advantage of this important show during the four days of the event.

After Germany, the top 10 nations on the visitor side were Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, China, Poland, Great Britain and Spain. Like last year, one in five visitors came from outside Germany.

This year, however, the level of visitor satisfaction was even higher, rising by four per cent to 90 per cent.

“Despite the challenging market, we succeeded in maintaining the level of internationality, which is particularly important for export-oriented companies. Tendence has confirmed its position as Germany’s most international and biggest order platform in the second half of the year,” says Detlef Braun, member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt.

A total of 1,211 exhibitors from 51 countries (including the Ecostyle and Webchance events) presented their latest products for the coming spring and gave national and international retailers the chance to place follow-up orders for the Christmas business.

On the visitor side, double-digit rates of growth were recorded from, for example, Great Britain, Greece, Poland and Spain. The number of visitors from the major Asian consumer goods markets – China, India and Japan – was also up in comparison to 2013. New for the 2015 show are two additional events held alongside Tendence: the Hair and Beauty trade fair and the new Eat & Lifestyle consumer event. As usual, the next Ecostyle and Webchance will be held concurrently with Tendence. These events take place between 29th August - 1st September, 2015. Visit www.tendence.messefrankfurt.com to find out more.

IJL boasts increased attendanceInternational Jewellery London welcomed an increased amount of visitors to its new home at Olympia Grand in London. Exhibitors reported robust sales and visitor numbers were positive, with early forecasts showing four per cent up combined with a 15 per cent increase in attendance from the Diamond Club.

“Our new venue proved to be the perfect setting for IJL’s best show ever, with an increased number of senior key retailers and buyers attending, especially from Ireland and overseas,” says Sam Willoughby, Event Director. “It provided a really stylish backdrop for the superb line-up of leading UK and international jewellers and designers to present their collections, many of whom have already signed up for 2015. As a barometer for the industry, the feedback was incredibly positive and upbeat, confirming that IJL now rivals its European counterparts.”

The venue was the ideal Launchpad for many fresh collections and more than 150 new companies from around the world – together with a wealth of exciting new show features and highlights. These included the first ever Late Night Shopping evening and Breast Cancer Care charity auction, the inspirational seminar programme, the latest trend intelligence and glamorous runway shows.

Save the dates for the next IJL on 6th - 8th September, 2015. Visit www.jewellerylondon.com to find out more.

Strong edition of Autumn Fair Internationali2i Events Group delivered another successful Autumn Fair in September, with more than 29,000 visitors through the doors – a rise in footfall compared to the 2013 show as more visitors opted to attend on multiple days. Retailers from 84 countries turned out to see 60,000 new product launches from 1,400 suppliers across 12 different market sectors.

There were 400 companies exhibiting for the first time this year. The positivity reflected a strengthened British retail industry that’s benefitting from good tourist trade and a welcome bounce back in the furniture market amidst improved housing sales. UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the Government department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy, chose to launch its new e-Exporting Programme at the show. Another important development that took place at the show was the formalisation of an agreement between i2i Events Group and The Lighting Industry Association to put on The Light Show at Autumn Fair International 2015. Other industry associations and trade bodies reinforced their presence at the event, with the Cookshop & Housewares Association (CHA) and British Travelgoods & Accessories Association (BTAA) both holding industry awards during the show. The Giftware Association (GA) displayed the Gift of the Year Award winners on its stand while the British Jewellers Association (BJA) was present for the first time in seven years and had a product trail of its members for visitors to follow. The CHA and Brands of China also had their own product trails.

Autumn Fair International 2015 will take place between 6th - 9th September, 2015 at the NEC, Birmingham.

Visit www.autumnfair.com for more details.

Top Drawer Autumn and Home settle into their new homeThe autumn leg of Top Drawer and the brand new autumn Home show were a real treat for visitors. The snazzy tunnel entrance led buyers through to the big, bright hall where both Top Drawer and Home stood side by side.

The layout was easy to navigate, with colour-coded carpet and signage to differentiate each show. The two events have created the ultimate seasonal show for design-led homeware and giftware buyers.

Taking place at the newly refurbished Olympia in London and showcasing more than 800 exhibitors over two halls, organisers consider the event a resounding success. New initiatives included Retail Masterclasses – a re-branded seminar agenda, and a luxury Indigo VIP Lounge designed by British designer, Ella Doran.

The launch of Home’s autumn edition alongside Top Drawer successfully added a serious homewares offering to the Top Drawer mix. Home covered all the bases for buyers of design-led homeware, including kitchen and dining, interior accessories, furniture and lighting, with exclusive exhibitors including Alessi, LSA and Parlane, Garden Trading and PR Home. Positive buyer reactions have led to the highest exhibitor re-bookings on record, a sure indication that the autumn leg of Home will echo the success of the January edition, which has more than doubled in size in just three years.

First autumn leg of CHSI takes placeMore than 2,000 creative craft industry professionals attended the first Craft Hobby + Stitch International Autumn at ExCel London in September. There were more than 100 exhibitors to explore, alongside a choreographed catwalk, Business Advice Centre and a diverse seminar and workshop programme.

Troy Bennett, ICHF Show Director, says, “There’s no doubt that the industry wants and needs a second international trade show in the UK and we’re delighted to have established Craft Hobby + Stitch International Autumn this year. This show attracted new buyers and retailers with a strong international presence. The quality of visitors to the show was high and while we would always hope for greater numbers we’ve met our year one targets and made a positive start to build upon.”

He continues, “We will now fine-tune the show based on feedback from all areas of the industry and will take with us the energy and enthusiasm of exhibitors and visitors who are keen to make this show work. We’d like to commend the exhibitors who went to great efforts to create a beautiful and inspiring show and intend to capitalise on this launch event and make CHSI Autumn a permanent fixture in the craft industry calendar.”

Preparations are well underway for CHSI Spring – celebrating its 40th show in 2015. The long-established show, scheduled for 15th - 17th February, 2015 at the NEC, Birmingham, will be packed with the latest trends and launches from more than 250 exhibitors, as well as offering an extensive programme of workshops, seminars and educational features. Charlotte Gillan, Managing Partner of walking stick specialist Classic Canes, has noticed increasing demand for the family firm’s hand-made walking sticks. “We grow and manufacture many of our rustic, country sticks here in our Somerset woodland,” says Charlotte. “Nature grows each piece of wood differently, so each one has to be treated as an individual by the craftsman to bring out its characteristics. This leads to the variation and character that distinguishes thumb sticks, hiking staffs and knob sticks from mass-produced walking sticks. Buyers love the provenance and the story, and the public love being able to buy an original stick that’ll become a much-loved friend.” T: +44 (0)1460 75686www.classiccanes.co.uk

The inspiration for Lanka Kade’s hand-woven soft dolls began when the company’s directors, Sri Lankan and British respectively, discovered that the dolls available on the market weren’t reflective of today’s multi-cultural society. They made several attempts to work with weaving groups, including in the Eastern conflict zone of Sri Lanka. Sadly the quality of colour, weave and supply remained elusive. However, in 2010, they stumbled upon two highly skilled weavers off the beaten track. Both exceeded retirement age, but were committed to their craft and had the traditional skills Lanka Kade wanted. Since then the elderly duo have doubled their workforce and are responsible for weaving all of the fabric for Lanka Kade’s beautifully bright dolls and animals, all done remarkably using traditional handlooms. Trade minister in e-tailing talks with

Isabel Martinson

Trade and investment minister Lord Livingston

asked to meet GA Chief Executive Isabel

Martinson at Autumn Fair so that he could

better understand how online retailers operate

in the UK gift and home industry.

The government is launching a new initiative

to support e-tailers seeking to sell their

products to consumers in other countries.

“I explained how our market works and told

him about the sort of retailers who might

be interested in selling online to overseas

customers,” explains Isabel. “I did, however, point

out that the cost of sending product abroad

could, in some cases, be prohibitive.”

Boost in GA membership numbers

and subscribers

Nineteen companies signed up to join The

GA during Autumn Fair and the number of

subscribers grew by 158 as retailers looked

to receive industry information from the

association – as well as the trade show

voucher offers from GA supplier members

exhibiting at selected trade shows. “We’re

delighted that we’re now able to promote

these suppliers to an ever-growing list

of retailers: it benefits both sides of our

industry,” says Isabel.

Seminars show retailing hasn’t lost

its allure

Isabel held two well-attended seminars

at Autumn Fair for people setting up as

online and/or bricks and mortar retailers.

“They all showed tremendous enthusiasm,”

she says. “And it was apparent that those

entering the world of e-tailing are much

savvier than they once were. Those I talked

to were sophisticated in their approach;

they’d clearly done their market research

and were keen to wring out as much

information as possible from the seminars.”

Isabel also chaired two panel discussions at

the Birmingham show – one on retailers

using social media to drive traffic to

their websites or stores, and another on

customer loyalty schemes.

Additionally, Isabel and GA retailer

members met with representatives of

show organiser, i2i Events. “It’s always

key to listen to our members’ ideas

as it continues to improve the visitor

experience,” says Isabel.

Festive and Seasonal category for Gift of the Year – and a new judge too!A Festive and Seasonal category has been included for Gift of the Year 2015. It will be open to products that reflect Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Halloween, and will complement Occasions, which features products for individual events such as birthdays, christenings and weddings.Martin de la Fuente, Trading Manager of non-food for premium brand Ocado – voted Best Online Supermarket by Which? every year since 2010 – has joined the Gift of the Year judging panel.

Isabel says, “We’re delighted that Martin will be bringing his expertise to the competition. While Ocado may be best known for its food, it’s always looking for new product from the gift, home and stationery sectors, which are burgeoning markets for the retailer.”

Gift of the Year 2015 was launched at Autumn Fair and Isabel reports there was a rush of exhibitors signing up – and paying – to enter their products. The showcase of this year’s winning and highly commended products on The GA stand was also a big draw.

GA members to pitch to John LewisA GA Meet the Buyer event with John Lewis Partnership gift buyers in London on 11th November is so heavily oversubscribed that places are being allocated based firstly on the date that people expressed interest and then on a first-come-first-paid basis.Would-be participants – existing, past and hopeful JLP suppliers – are being asked about their readiness to supply John Lewis, with a view to pitching to them on the day. JLP is also looking forward to meeting start-up companies. Only paid-up members of The GA are being considered.

The John Lewis team will comprise Anna Rigby, Head of Buying Home Accessories, Gifts and Seasonal; Dan Cooper, Buyer Seasonal and Calendar Events; Katherine Mitchell, Buyer Gift Food; Sara Allbright, Buyer Home and Gift Collections, and Vicky Angell, Junior Buyer Outdoor Living.

Attending companies are being invited to send up to two representatives and will be offered the opportunity to meet up to two of the five participating JLP buyers. These 20-minute sessions will allow companies to pitch their products in structured 10 minute presentations, with 10 minutes for questions and discussions. Pitch guidelines will be provided by JLP via The GA ahead of the event.

In the introductory session, Anna Rigby will outline JLP’s approach to newness and innovation, its key drivers and how they operate with new suppliers. This will be geared towards those without experience of working with JLP but other participants are welcome to book into this session.

The maximum number of member companies that can attend is 26. However, if some suppliers only want to see one buyer and there are spaces in the programme, more giftware companies will be invited. There may also be space to accommodate additional inexperienced suppliers in the introductory session.

As a keen supporter of any method of transport that’s kind to the environment, Tom Hawes, owner of Tilnar Art, and his team were proud to witness and be part of the Tour de France celebrations in the UK.

Tom came up with a great idea for the event and a way of highlighting his products and brand – he placed giant metal giraffes along the route with big yellow signs supporting Chris Froome. The giraffes had come all the way from Africa to support the Kenyan-born British Defending Champion, and were broadcast on television during the event. Not only did they make Eurosport’s live and edited highlights package, they also made it onto the official Tour de France website. Tom backed this up with a strong Twitter presence which went viral, with the hashtags #Froomesbiggestfans and #GiraffesforFroome. Even Chris Froome himself favoured the tweets.

All of the team at Tilnar Art are great cycling fans, and Tom himself has taken part in a number of cycle events. Cycling is a great environmentally friendly way of travel and a brilliant way of exercising and keeping fit, while enjoying our beautiful countryside. “Being a fair trade, ethical and ecological company, we fully

support any form of transport that reduces our carbon footprints,” says Tom.

The company’s metal giraffes are hand-made by a group of artists from Zimbabwe, who are widely regarded as producing the highest quality metal sculptures available from Africa. “Our customers have all been impressed with the quality and finish of this beautiful range,” continues Tom.

All of the sculptures are marked with the artists’ logo and come with a colour product tag with pictures of the artists. The products are fair trade and your purchases of these sculptures help provide a stable income and good standard of living for the artists and their families. The reclaimed metal is heated and once hot and malleable is individually crafted to produce these fabulous sculptures that are then finished with a varnish. Many are displayed in gardens and the company recommends a yearly coat of boat varnish to maintain the piece’s excellent condition if placed outside. Each sculpture is individually made with its own one-of-a-kind markings and poses.

Fair trade fashion accessories label Earth Squared has been on track for a record breaking autumn 2014. Highlights of the season include its distinctive tweed ranges, which comprise new fabrics and some attractive bag designs, and the spot collection that features new handbag and purse combinations. The recently introduced Dog Tooth collection has also caught the imagination with its contemporary yet retro look – a must for those looking to use the season’s must-have fabric. There’s also the company’s line of scarves, and this autumn has seen phenomenal sales of its jersey scarves. Earth Squared is a fair trade accessories label that takes great pride in producing quality products at affordable prices, always striving to offer good margins whilst continuing to deliver great looking, fashionable and functional textile bags, purses and scarves with a huge variety of price points. Namaste is adding to its very successful aluminium selection with a range of new colours for autumn. The collection includes trinket dishes, boxes, photo frames, elephants and tea light holders as well as its usual offering of great tableware items. Ethical issues feature strongly with this range, which is not only fairly traded from a family business in India, but is also made entirely from recycled aluminium. The mining of bauxite ore is extremely damaging and the consequential electrolytic extraction of the aluminium vastly expensive in its use of energy. The re-use of the metal is estimated to save some 95 per cent of energy use and helps to stimulate the market for scrap, which is very useful in India. T: +44 (0)1756 700 900www.namaste-uk.com

After years spent witnessing the inequality and hardship of life in South Africa, Yvonne Bullen was inspired to create a trading platform that would directly uplift and empower individuals and communities that were struggling for survival in developing countries. Koseli’s product range has been transformed, updated and is constantly evolving to offer new and exciting gifts and fashion accessories for both children and adults. Fair trade gifts these days are often made by highly skilled artisans with superb quality, and this chess set from Shared Earth is a great example. Every piece is hand-carved by specialist craftsmen in Saharanpur, India – that town that suffered Hindu-Moslem riots recently. These and similar wooden items are beautiful, sturdy and long lasting. Shared Earth works with several artisans in Saharanpur, which, in contrast to today’s mass production world, is a dynamic centre for woodcarving. Products available include bookends, boxes, picture frames, coffee tables, coat hooks, letter racks, incense holders and many more. T: +44 (0)1904 632 896www.sharedearth.co.uk

New Overseas Traders is celebrating a 10-year partnership with a fair trade group in Delhi that helps street children and orphans. The organisation was started in 2004 by grown up street children who decided to make newspaper bags in order to provide an income for themselves and to offer food, shelter and education to street children in need. The adults in the group and surrounding village make newspaper bags. These can be used as carrier bags or gift bags made from recycled newspapers. In the beginning they collected old newspapers from houses using a bicycle. Now, due to the order volumes, they’re supplied with the unsold papers from various newspaper companies in Delhi. New Overseas Traders provides 85 per cent of the year-round income for the group and ordered more than 500,000 bags last year. T: +44 (0)1672 851 166www.newoverseastraders.co.uk

As a buyer, I’ve visited many countries around the world and one enduring image I’ll always remember is of a wizened old lady in her 80s, making dream catchers in a family compound in Bali.

At first I thought that was wrong – she shouldn’t be working at her age! I changed my mind when I learned more about the extended family system in Balinese villages. Cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents will share a compound with perhaps seven or eight huts. The younger adults will often be out in the fields or elsewhere working, and grandparents are very happy to sit in their chairs, keep an eye on the children and – if they can – contribute to the family income by making simple crafts like dream catchers. Simple for them, I should say – I haven’t a clue how I’d set about it!

What happens in Britain? Old people sit in their chairs, but they often have no sense of purpose and get extremely lonely – loneliness is a major social problem here today. So, when I see a customer buying a dream catcher in our shop, I often think of this social system we could learn much from, which cares for all its members, from young to old.

This is also because there’s no welfare state in Bali, nor is there one in most of the countries where handicrafts are made. The

welfare state, admirable in so many ways, has made many people assume it’s up to the state to provide; reliance on self has weakened, and the willingness of families to help one another in times of trouble is far less strong than it was a hundred years ago, or in countries where no welfare state exists.

Sometimes, however, disasters occur when families aren’t enough. In Kashmir recently there have been devastating floods that have left 250 dead and millions homeless. As yet not enough is being done to cut the emissions that cause climate change in the world, and extreme heavy rainfall events are increasing in India, whilst land, used as a sponge to drain off heavy rainfall, has been encroached upon with hotel and residential development. The result is disaster. Kashmir is the centre for papier mache production in India, gifts which are sold by many shops in Britain. Our supplier Raja Mugloo says, “It was like a tsunami and we didn’t even get any time to move. We’ve never witnessed such devastating floods. Our raw material supply Mehrajudin, entire property and goods is completely submerged

in water – the loss of lives and property has been severe. Our shop in Srinigar was completely submerged under 15ft of water and everything is gone. We’ve not been able to move anywhere as 80 per cent of the roads are damaged and still under water. We’re planning to distribute some clothes items, food and blankets and ask for your help. Please keep praying for us.” Can you imagine if your shop was completely destroyed, your home too, and you had no insurance cover?

Shared Earth is donating £1,000 to help the artisans rebuild their homes, buy new raw materials such as paints and so on. When did Yankee Candle begin? The Yankee Candle story began in 1969 when a young 17 year-old high school student named Mike Kittredge realised he didn’t have enough money to buy a gift for his mother. Ingenuity led to Mike melting his wax crayons to create a candle. Before Mike could give the present to his mother, a neighbour saw the candle and persuaded him to sell it to her. With the money, the entrepreneur purchased the materials to make two more candles – one for his mother and one to sell. This was how Yankee Candle was born.

What’s your career background? So far I’ve had a varied and insightful 30-year career working on other well-known brands consumers love. Prior to moving to Yankee Candle, I spent 10 years as President, International and General Manager UK for Weight Watchers. Before that I held a number of senior positions as well as managing brands and business units at Sara Lee Corp, Fisher Price Inc, Mattel and Hasbro Inc. – famous for Barbie, Disney toys, Hot Wheels, CBeebies, Action Man and Monopoly.

What made you decide to work for Yankee Candle? Working with leading brands that have a special connection with the consumer has always been a strong passion of mine, and the European market is home to some of the world’s best. Moving to Yankee Candle was a natural progression, giving me the opportunity to work with the world’s best-loved candle. Since its launch in the UK, we’ve seen the Yankee Candle brand go from strength to strength, so it’s great to now be part of this thriving brand, which already enjoys a huge fan base and yet has so much more potential.

How will you use your skills and experience to help the company? My international experience and many years

spent building brands across international markets with both similar and differing needs is definitely going to help! We have a strong team in place at Yankee Candle and by working together we can continue to lead the way by bringing constant innovation to our consumers and new approaches to benefit our customers and help them build their home fragrance offerings in store.

What has the brand got planned for the coming year? We at Yankee Candle are really excited to be launching innovative new fragrance collections for spring/summer 2015. For spring, the range will refresh and indulge consumers with the new Pure Essence collection. Taking inspiration from some of nature’s finest elements, the luxurious new scents of Aloe Water, Shea Butter and Cassis will awaken, relax and stimulate the senses.

For summer, the Café Culture collection embraces relaxation and rich aromas found

within a traditional European café ambience. Reminiscent of life’s luxuries, the new scents of Pain au Raisin, Tarte Tatin and Cappuccino Truffle create a decadent trio to tempt and entice consumers.

Both seasons will welcome new accessories and also a fantastic selection of gift sets for consumer gifting occasions in the first half of the year. Particularly exciting is a new collection of gifts with keepsake packaging; perfect for the Yankee Candle fan looking for collectables as well as a fresh way to entice new customers to the brand.

What trends do you predict for 2015 in the fragrance sector? Yankee Candle invests into researching the top trends for forthcoming seasons and all of the fragrances we’re launching next spring and summer have been created specifically for the international market. This is how Yankee Candle can be confident that Pure Essence and Café Culture will satisfy consumer’s needs.

What trade shows do Yankee Candle exhibit at and why? We’re proud to have a significant presence at key European trade shows in both spring and autumn. In the UK, Spring Fair, Birmingham in January and Home & Gift, Harrogate in September, are integral to the brand and product communication with Yankee Candle customers. In France, we exhibit at Maison & Objet in September, in Germany at Tendence in September and Ambiente in February, and in Italy HOMI Milano also in September.

The opportunities these shows present are invaluable in providing a platform to directly launch new collections and innovations to each

market and to spend time with key customers.

Are there any changes you’d like to make or products you wish to see in the brand’s portfolio? There will always be new product developments in the pipeline and with the international home fragrance market growing, Yankee Candle is looking forward to launching some exciting innovations in the near future. Constantly bringing new fragrances and concepts to the classic range, developing our flameless offering and new accessory design is key to our future success.

How do you see the business developing in the future? We see significant growth opportunities both in our home and European markets as we continue to innovate and build the range and expand our home fragrance offering to continually inspire our consumers. We’re seeing brand loyalty expand as we bring new consumers to the brand with fresh designs while staying focused on innovation.

Now in its eighth year, the annual winter event returns to Chelsea this November to showcase fine, contemporary work from 100 designer-makers. Handmade in Britain: The Contemporary Crafts and Design Fair begins the Christmas season at the historic and beautiful Chelsea Old Town Hall.

Showcasing makers who are renowned for their skill and exceptional quality of work, the show is a special opportunity to purchase and commission bespoke, hand-made pieces directly from the maker, just in time for the

Christmas season. The show is an inspiring alternative to the

high street and a one-of-a-kind opportunity to browse exceptional crafts, buy original and hand-made gifts or commission a bespoke piece of work.

On the luxury fashion and accessories side, renowned textile artist Carole Waller will present wearable art in rich, hand-painted silk garments, while Nottingham’s Yakshi Malhotra will showcase her collection of luxury knitwear and scarves. Taisir Gibreel’s vibrant scarf collection is based on original hand-drawings and celebrates colour, culture and diversity. Jane Hopkinson will be showing sculptural shapes, clean lines and striking tones with her hand-made leather handbags. Architectural influences are present in jewellery designer Sarah Herriot’s cutting edge, CAD-designed pieces with silver, gold and rubber. Beth Gilmour will be exhibiting her award-winning ranges featuring bi-coloured stones, shaded gold and signature intricate leaf patterns.

Among the home and gift ideas, Scotland’s Sian Patterson creates ceramics as functional

still life and will showcase a collection of work both familiar and distinctive, while Jonathan Rogers’ glasswork presents an exploration of texture, pattern and a layering of colour in pieces that are modern, understated and elegant. Daniel Latorre-Cruz will show hand-made paper lighting rendered from recycled paper and tree fibres, and Sarah Grove will exhibit her textile-inspired bowls, jugs and vases from her collection of buttoned, patchwork and quilted ceramics. Mark Hanvey from Northern Ireland will offer woodwork of a finely detailed and delicate nature in functional and conceptual forms. Goldborough offers stylish home textiles with a modern aesthetic created with environmentally sustainable materials.

Gift Focus readers put their insurance queries, concerns and questions to leading brokers T.H. March

insurance solutionsNeil McFarlane, Managing Director of T.H. March & Co Limited

I’m bringing in extra stock and some new lines in anticipation of a Christmas rush. Will this affect my insurance? Some policies incorporate an automatic clause that in effect extends your insurance cover to take account of times, such as in the run-up to Christmas when you’re carrying extra stock. But you must check with your insurer as this may not be the case with your particular policy. In addition, any change in the kind of products you normally stock should be notified to your insurer immediately to ensure that they’re still prepared to offer cover. They will take into consideration whether your new products pose an increased fire risk or perhaps an increased risk of theft. You may be required to step up security measures. If you’re in any doubt, as always, contact your broker or insurer for clarification.

Storage space in my premises is limited so I plan to store extra Christmas stock off the shop premises (at my home.) Will my business insurance cover this? No, and I suspect neither will your household insurance. Any changes you make to your usual arrangements should be discussed with your broker or insurer.

Security of the proposed storage will obviously be an important consideration as will the transportation of goods to and from your business premises. You should also make certain that you don’t leave goods unattended in your vehicle unless you’ve arranged cover specifically for that purpose.

My partner and I jointly own and manage a gift shop between us. However, after being run off our feet last Christmas we’ve decided to ease the load slightly this year and take on some temporary seasonal help. Do we need extra insurance? In a word, yes! If you take on an employee, even temporarily, you will need to have Employers’ Liability Insurance. This is a legal requirement under Employers’ Liability

(Compulsory Insurance) Regulations. If your temporary member of staff has not been given a contract, or if they’re part-time, this law still applies and you must arrange some cover.

It’s important that you always keep your Employers’ Liability certificates of cover on file – even when they’re no longer in date. This is because a claim could be made against you long after the temporary staff member has left your employ. The full impact of many kinds of injuries and illnesses can take a very long time to materialise so it could be months, even years later, that a claim is made. That being the case it’s vitally important that you have proof of cover.

Going forward, the Employers Liability Tracing Office – ELTO – has been established, which records details centrally of all Employers Liability cover in force. It records information by logging an employer’s Employers Reference Number or ERN, which is allocated and used by HMRC.

My town council has approached me and other traders in my street for permission to erect small Christmas trees and lights above our shop windows as part of the high street decorations. Who will be responsible for the insurance?Generally confirmation should be obtained from the council that it’s responsible for the decorations, their erection and any damage caused to or by them. It’s also sensible to

inform your broker or insurer, to ensure they’re happy with how the decorations are erected and secured.

I’ve been approached by a local charity that would like to hold a seasonal fundraising event at my premises. How would this affect my insurance? The words public liability and risk assessment spring to mind here. It’s likely that the charity will take care of this but you need to fully protect yourself from losses, breakages, accidents on your premises etc. Be involved in the planning process and ask for copies of the charity’s paperwork relating to the event at your premises.

Also, let your insurers or brokers know to establish that they’re happy with the event and how it’s being run. This will ensure that all information is known and your cover is not deemed prejudiced.

Having said that, there are many positives to running a charity event, including bringing in new customers to your business.

The spring/summer leg of Top Drawer kicks off at Olympia, London on 11th January, 2015. There are five edited product sectors at the show comprising more than 800 leaders in the UK and international design arena:

• Gift – the largest selection of the show; explore thousands of exciting, fun and original gift ideas, from classic and contemporary to directional and quirky. • Fashion Accessories – products that are in season, bold and original, from jewellery to scarves and all things fashion-based in between. • Stationery & Greetings – beautiful and luxurious stationery, gift-wrap, bespoke greeting cards and products where illustrative designs come to life.• Children’s – a treasure trove of kids’ products, from toys and games to clothes and accessories. • Wellbeing – a luxurious mix of candles, home scents, fragrances and bath and body items.

This January, the second edition of Craft will be reintroduced into the mix to create a beautifully curated super event presenting buyers with more than 1,000 leading UK and international brands, all hand-selected for their original designs, character and appeal.

Eco Trail with Oliver HeathFrom upcycling to fair trade, the Top Drawer Eco Trail recognises and rewards those brands that have an outstanding environmental impact. Renowned TV presenter and environmental

champion Oliver Heath will once again be vetting the Eco Trail to rightfully accredit those upstanding exhibitors.

Oliver’s stamp recognises products that are:• Produced ethically• Under fair trade schemes• Ideally made of sustainable materials• Biodegradable or reusable in some wayThe exhibitors whose products are selected will display the ‘Eco Trail certified by Oliver Heath’ sticker on their stand, making it easy for visitors to be green about their choice of product. You’ll also find the Eco flyer when you arrive at the show, providing a full list of the exhibitors involved.

Spotted by Charlotte AbrahamsThe Spotted area of the show is designed to create an entry point for a whole new generation of exhibitors and the curated design-based companies who have never been seen at a major UK trade fair.

“Everyone featured within the Spotted area is chosen for the quality and originality of the things they make,” says Charlotte, a design and interiors freelance writer and author.

“There’s such a wealth of talent out there but many small companies and individual designer-makers simply can’t afford to break in to the trade fair market. By removing these financial obstacles, Clarion Events is giving these exciting businesses the opportunity to introduce their work to an international audience – and giving that audience yet another reason not to miss Top Drawer.”

“Top Drawer is a nicely edited cross section of products. It’s great

visual inspiration, and being in London it’s an ideal convenient trade show. I would say the best

thing about Top Drawer is not only the location but also the layout.

Individual sectors make the show so easy to navigate so you can

instantly find the type of products you’re searching for.”

Take a trip to Home, the UK’s definitive homewares and accessories show

where the heart is

Home is now a firm fixture on the trade show calendar. Taking place alongside both Top Drawer and Craft, it’s the UK’s definitive retail and contract event for homewares, housewares and interior accessories.

Launched in 2012 by Clarion Events, Home features innovative, award-winning designers and the industry’s key brands all hand-picked and brought together in a central London location by a formidable group of experts from the UK’s leading home retailers, including Steamer Trading, John Lewis, Lakeland and Heals. It’s the ideal place to buy covetable, stylish homeware products to boost your business profits.

The show organisers know that consumers are making more considered purchases, investing more in products and brands for the home that offer timeless style, high quality and beautiful design. This ethos is integral to Home and defines the companies that Clarion selects to appear at the show. The product mix covers all aspects of the home, from interior accessories and kitchen and dining to soft furnishings, furniture and lighting. A section of the show, called Homegrown, is also dedicated to emerging British design talent.

The event has doubled in size and gained a 35 per cent growth in visitor numbers. The

growing popularity of Home was confirmed when it was announced that the show will run twice yearly from the September 2014 show. More than 90 per cent of exhibitors at the autumn show were committed to exhibiting at Home exclusively.

Home’s co-location with Top Drawer and Craft opens the season with the UK’s largest selection of design-led giftware, fashion accessories, homeware and interior accessories.

Craft returns for its second outing in January, alongside Top Drawer and Home

redefining hand-made

craft

The launch of Craft in 2014 was in response to increasing demand from retailers searching for high quality products with provenance; items that are truly original and objects with heart, soul and individuality.

The show fills a gap in the UK market for a high quality, juried trade event that enables 150 leading makers and artisans to meet a substantial audience of international retailers, galleries, museums, professional buyers and collectors within a dedicated trade event in the city of London.

Craft is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see the work of 100 contemporary designer-makers working across a wide range of disciplines. The diverse mix covered includes basketry, blacksmithing, book art, ceramics, enamelling, fashion accessories, furniture, glass, interiors, non-precious and precious jewellery, knitwear, leather, lettering, metal work, wood, millinery, mosaic, paper, printmaking, product design, sculptural, recycled, stone carving, textiles, traditional and more.

The 2015 event will relocate to a permanent home at London Olympia, alongside Top Drawer and Home, and will have its own specially designed area like last year.

The combination of three buying events offers visitors to the show an unrivalled offering of product that covers a range of industries at a key buying time. One ticket will give you entry to all three events.

Craft is run for Clarion Events by Piyush Suri, Founder and Director of Handmade in Britain, with close support from Ian Rudge, Development Director at Clarion Events and

Co-Founder of 100% Design and Tent London. Between them, Ian and Piyush have a wealth of contacts and experience within the world of craft and events.

Now in its 35th year, the Wales Spring Fair is Wales’ premier home and gift trade show. Situated in the Venue Cymru Arena in Llandudno, North Wales, the show has gained a worthy reputation for providing fresh ideas and innovative products to buyers from across Wales and the rest of the UK. The venue is in the centre of the North Wales coast, in the popular tourist destination of Llandudno.

The 2014 event saw a significant increase in buyer attendance, cementing the show’s place as Wales’ premier home and gift show. This has also been recognised by the exhibitors. In addition to nearly all of last year’s companies

rebooking their stands, a quarter of all exhibitors will be new to the Wales Spring Fair. This means there’ll be something fresh and exciting for the buyers, which travel from across Wales and the rest of the UK.

In response to buyer feedback, the show team has taken the opportunity to carefully source more design-led products, hand-selected for their commercial appeal, quality and price.

Many of last year’s exhibitors are set to return in 2015, including RBW Group, Pendragon Wales, Richard Lang, S Gregory and Manav plus many more.

Wales Spring Fair has seen a steady increase in all gifts and homeware ranges, attracting buyers from souvenir shops, traditional gift stores, specialised boutiques as well as garden centres, restaurants, cafes, museums and hotels.

Adrian LaTrobe, Event Manager of Wales Spring Fair, says: “Last year’s buyers specified a range of product areas that they’d like to see more of at the Wales Spring Fair. Two important ranges that kept being requested were hand-crafted products and food products, so this is where we’ve concentrated our focus.”

The mission to attract more of these key exhibitors has been a success, with a host of

new exhibitors coming on board, showcasing hand-made jewellery; original artwork; hand-crafted, shabby chic accessories and design-led homewares, as well as Welsh food gifts and confectionery.

Anwen Jones, Wales Spring Fair Marketing Officer, says: “We targeted these exhibitors because our buyers asked us to, but in doing so have enriched the offering of the Wales Spring Fair and greatly increased our target visitor market. By including these one-of-a-kind products we hope to attract buyers from art galleries, boutiques and high-end gift shops who may not have previously recognised what the Wales Spring Fair had to offer them.”

Running alongside the event will be a Retail Support Clinic. Agencies including the Federation of Small Businesses, Menter Iaith, Grwp Llandrillo Menai, Conwy Council and marketing agency TFI Monday will be offering free help and advice to retailers.

Entry is free for trade buyers. Pre-registered visitors are eligible for fast track entry to the show and will receive exclusive promotional special offers during the lead up to the event.

The Italians certainly know how to put on a show! This year’s HOMI was a haven for gift sourcing, from Christmas and homeware to fashion accessories and garden items.

Fiera Milano itself is a wonderful location for a show – there’s plenty of space to meander round the aisles, and it’s clear to see the Italians are very passionate about their design.

Some 78,234 visitors, of which 11,300 were foreign, walked through the doors of the second edition of HOMI. A total of 1,300 exhibitors took over more than 60,000sq m of exhibition space, 20 per cent of which were from outside Italy.

On the international visitors side, there was considerable attendance from Russia, France and China. The event also saw a positive return of buyers from the USA and Japanese markets, which have always been of interest to the lifestyles industry in Italy.

“These numbers represent a new strategy to market the excellent quality of Italian style around the world, whose charm has captured the attention of companies aware of innovation and that want to be known as entrepreneurs of these values,” says Enrico Pazzali, Managing Director of Fiera Milano. “The second edition tells us that we’re on the right track and represented the perfect compass for the first international edition of HOMI, which took place in Russia from 15th - 18th October. This show ran concurrent with I Salonoi Worldwide Moscow, where we brought 120 Italian and foreign exhibitors. It was an opportunity to affirm the international breadth of HOMI and penetrate a market with such enormous potential as the Russian market.”

The September figures demonstrate the

successful positioning of the new concept, introduced in the first edition in January this year, which located companies and products in the new theme areas; brand new exhibition installations and new areas dedicated to business, entertaining and experimentation to translate the HOMI philosophy into a tangible experience. Along with the satellite installations, the exhibition comes to life in the Format Store – product hybrids inspired by new lifestyles offering practical suggestions and new experimental ideas – and in all the other special areas that make the event innovative and original.

The show was divided up into different areas across 10 pavilions: Living Habits, Home Wellness, Fragrances & Personal Care, Fashion & Jewels, Gifts & Events, Garden & Outdoor, Kid Style, Home Textiles and Hobby & Work.

The HOMI Maker Design Awards took place at the show, a competition open to in-house

production in the home décor and lifestyle sector, geared towards designers under the age of 35 who are making their debut in the design industry.

A key trend highlighted at HOMI was multi-use, from book lamps to stereo speaker stools, through to cardboard bookshelves and air purifiers in the form of life-sized 3D statues. The most common trend noted was reinventing everyday objects whilst giving them a brand new, unexpected functionality.

HOMI will be back at Fiera Milano with new ideas and exciting worldwide exhibitors in January, 2015.

After celebrating 50 successful years in 2014, the Giving & Living trade show has a new look for 2015. As part of a branding update, the colours of the show and its logo are changing and the website has been refreshed to reflect the show’s new, more contemporary image.

The biggest home and gift trade show in the south west, Giving & Living has a strong focus on the tourism sector and is packed with a year’s worth of ideas that sell. Around 300 exhibitors have booked in for the show, with more than 4,000 retail buyers expected to walk through the door.

Only one mile from the M5, the show is easy to get to as well as simple to get around. There’s also free parking, appetising catering facilities and staff on site to help.

Designed and Made in BritainThis is a dedicated area of the show featuring companies whose ethos is centred around the UK’s individual heritage. Many of the companies in this area won’t be exhibiting at any other events. This area gives you access to locally produced items – look out for Designed and Made in Britain signs at the show.

Enhance – new for 2015Enhance will be a mix of new and innovative products designed to help enhance retailers’ product offerings. This area will also form the hub for an area of business services and add-ons. If you’re a smaller independent retailer then you’ll benefit from seeing the large numbers of companies who can help you with everything from your shop displays to your bags and EPoS systems to your website.

Naturally TrailYour business may have a strong ethical or environmental basis that needs to be reflected in the merchandise you’re offering. This trail runs throughout the show and makes it easy for you to track down products that are in keeping with the rest of your offering and brand values.

NewcomersThe special Newcomers area showcases first time exhibitors. These companies have never before exhibited at a trade show so it’s a great opportunity to spot new brands and products long before any of your competitors.

The coast and tourismThe coast and tourism are huge driving forces for the south west economy. Giving & Living presents an unrivalled selection of products for retail buyers, whether the outlets are large tourist attractions looking for high volume or small independent outlooks searching for that little something that’s one-of-a-kind and different.

What’s your career background? My career started 30 years ago at the age of 14 when I started a mail order fashion business. The business became mostly internet rather than mail order and during 2007 (23 years after starting) I received an offer for the business completely out of the blue. I didn’t really want to sell but the offer was just too good to refuse so by the end of 2007 the business was sold.

When did you open the shop?I promised my wife I would take at least a year off, but after four months I saw that Mantons was for sale – three months later the legal work had been completed and we were the new owners. Mantons was opened in 1987 and this August we celebrated our sixth anniversary of taking over. As I’ve never worked for anyone else you could say I’ve never had a proper job!

What items do you sell and which suppliers do you use? When we took over, the shop was mainly a

toy shop that sold a few greeting cards and no gifts. We’re now a greeting card specialist with a large gift offering and a very limited selection of high quality toys. Our focus is very much on the mid to luxury end of the gift and greeting card market and nearly everything we sell is exclusive to Mantons on the Isle of Man.Our suppliers include Wendy Jones Blackett, Noel Tatt and Molly Mae for greeting cards and Rosemoore Fragrance and Enesco for gifts.

What category of customer is your store aimed at?We have a large customer base, mostly local residents but we also attract a lot of tourists during the summer months (the TT

Races being our busiest fortnight). As with most card and gift shops, the majority of our customers are women who appreciate quality. We find many locals prefer to support local independent shops rather than chains.

Please describe the look and interior layout of your shop. We’re lucky to own the building which is five floors, although only the ground floor is used for retail with the other floors used as offices and storage. At the start of 2012 we added an extension to give us 2,500sq ft of retail space on the ground floor. As well as the extension we did a complete refit, installed a new shop front, roof and double-glazing throughout the building. It was a massive commitment in money, time and energy but well worth it as we’ve been able to improve the business considerably as a result.

How often do you change your window dressings and shop displays? Our window displays are vital to us. We have three windows and change at least one a week. We’ve won several awards for our displays and at Christmas time our local traders’ association uses our theme and asks the other shops in the town to complement this as much as possible.

Six years down the road, Mantons Cards on the Isle of Man is a flourishing greeting cards and gift shop

staying strong

g

Do you do much on social network sites, and if so how do you use them? We use social media including Twitter and Facebook and update once a week. We don’t regard social media as a magic bullet but as a way of making the odd extra sale. We don’t run any competitions or promotions on social media but we do mention whenever we win another important award such as a Retas Award or window display award. Social media is also a good way to receive customer feedback so all-in-all it’s worthwhile, but I know of people who expected Facebook to save a failing shop and personally I don’t think it can have that much effect.

Do you ever hold events or promotional evenings in your store? If so, please give details of previous ones you’ve done. Each Christmas we hold an invitation-only evening and provide drinks and nibbles to our regular customers. We’ve also held FUNdraising days for local charities and events like these have really helped put Mantons at the centre of the community.

Which trade shows do you attend and why?Travel to and from the Isle of Man is ridiculously expensive, so we don’t attend many trade shows. Fortunately The Greats, Pulse and PGLive have all been at more or less the same time for the last couple of years so we’ve taken advantage and attended them all in one trip. Most potential suppliers contact us directly as we’ve become known as the shop to deal with on the Isle of Man so the chances of finding new suppliers are limited. However, I’d like to attend the NEC and Harrogate in the future especially if I can combine these trips with another event.

What’s next for Mantons Cards? We’d like to open a second store but have found local rental and freehold prices to be unrealistic. Together with higher costs locally (wages, energy etc.) it would be hard to make a second store profitable, but if the right deal came along, watch this space.

“Each Christmas we hold an invitation-only evening and provide drinks and nibbles to our regular customers. We’ve also held FUNdraising days for local charities and events like these have really helped put Mantons at

the centre of the community.”

the smell of successDavid Blower, Managing Director of The Milford Collection, gives us an insight into the giftware and glassware specialist’s development since its beginning in 1985

How did you become involved in the

giftware industry?

When I first left school I joined a high street bank, which I left after five years to go working and travelling around Europe. After three years of travelling I came home and got a job with the Welsh government. I was based in the marketing department, which involved helping to find export markets for Welsh gifts and crafts, and that was really my introduction to the gift market.

We were taking Welsh clothing companies to trade shows in the USA and Europe, and we even booked the Orient Express to go up to the Harrogate Lingerie and Corsetry Show where we staged a fashion show of Welsh clothing actually on the luxury locomotive.

We were also heavily involved in trying to help Welsh gift and craft companies market their products in the home market and abroad. I remember being involved with our stand at Spring Fair back in 1983 where we would hire a huge pantechnicon with corporate hospitality on the mezzanine and stands for Welsh companies underneath, all along two aisles.

We were also trying to establish an export market in the USA for Welsh gifts and exhibited in New York, Dallas and Chicago. It

was after visiting these shows that I had the idea of setting up my own distribution business. What led you to establish The Milford

Collection and when was it launched?

I left the Welsh government and set up the Milford Collection as a sole trader in March 1985 to supply the US market with Welsh gifts and clothing. I had five independent sales agents working the north eastern seaboard and mid west. Business was good in the first few years, especially when there was near parity between the dollar and pound, making UK products extremely competitive in the US market. Were there any teething problems

when you set up the company?

Trading became difficult when sterling strengthened against the dollar after what was then a meeting of the G5, and it wasn’t long before the products I was selling became too expensive for the US market. It was at this time that I was approached by a company called Grosvenor of London to see if I could do some contract packing for them. It was one of the leading players in character toiletries at the time and if anyone received a Teenage

Mutant Ninja Turtle, Mr. Men, Garfield or Snoopy bubble bath at Christmas in the late ’80s or early ’90s, it had more than likely been bottled and packed by us in rural mid Wales.

What products do you offer?

It was when we were involved in the contract packing that we were sent some pot pourri to pack. We were then given the opportunity to supply the company with pot pourri if we could find out how to make it, which we did. Unfortunately contract packing is at the wrong end of the market; huge volumes but small margins, so we gradually moved in to supplying independent gift shops with our own Milford branded pot pourri.

The catalyst for our first surge in growth was when we started to make bath bombs in 1997 where customers included Boots and Homebase, and we then introduced our Lavender Warmers in 1999. Bill McKechnie, who’s now our Sales Agent for Scotland, came down to help for a few months and ended up staying with us for seven years while we developed the bath bomb market. The next big move for us was in 2007 when we introduced a small glassware range from Poland, and this range of mouth blown recycled glass has become the mainstay of our business.

In the last few years my son John joined the business after obtaining a Business Degree at Aberystwyth University, and my brother Selwyn also joined us after a 30 year career in high street banking. Having these new skills on board has given more structure to the

business and we went limited last year when Tim Halford joined us as Chairman. Tim has led a very eventful life, being Vice President of European Public Affairs Occidental Petroleum Corp, Director Group Public Affairs Grand Metropolitan PLC, Director Group Public Affairs Trafalgar House PLC and Director Group Corp Affairs Standard Chartered Bank PLC. We now have a great team at the helm with Tim and Selwyn bringing their corporate experience and a little gravitas to the board – John with his youth and enthusiasm and hopefully me with my 30 years’ experience of working in the gift industry.

Earlier this year we were approached by the owner of Benaya Art Ceramics who asked us if we’d be interested in distributing its range of decorative ceramic tiles in the UK and Europe.

The Benaya range fits perfectly with our current product line and customer base and I’m looking forward to building the sales in the UK and Europe.

Are you planning to offer any new or

different product lines in the future?

We’re looking to expand the range of Benaya tube-lined products and also introduce a range of earthenware and glass garden related gifts. We’re also considering introducing some Christmas items. Although we’ve now stopped manufacturing pot pourri, we still offer scented pine cones in the run up to Christmas, which is very successful for us so I’m looking into what else we can offer to accompany the cones.

What trade shows will you be

exhibiting at and why?

In 2015 we’ll be exhibiting at Harrogate Christmas & Gift, Autumn and Spring Fair at the NEC, Scotland’s Trade Fair, Giving and Living in Exeter and Home & Gift Harrogate in July, which is one of my favourite shows. We’re also looking into attending a number of European shows with the support of DTI funding and The Giftware Association. What are you working on at the

present moment?

A new hand-thrown earthenware garden product – it’s a variation of an existing item

that I think or hope will catch the imagination of our buyers. It’s a very simple product but over the years I’ve found keeping it simple is often the best approach. How do you see The Milford Collection

developing over the coming year?

With regards to the home market and product offering we’re certainly going to be expanding our range of garden-related products, but our main growth will be by developing our export markets, mainly in Europe. Why do you think your customers use

you over your competitors?

We have an excellent reputation for supply. In 2013 we sent out 98 per cent of our orders within 24 hours and I have John to thank for that who’s made a huge difference to our daily operations. To do this we have to have stock on the shelves, so there’s shipments coming in from Poland every Friday.

It’s proving a little more difficult with Benaya; although it’s a Canadian company we bring the hand-painted tiles directly in from the Far East so this is our first real experience of dealing with containers and long lead times. We’ll get there and hopefully offer our customers the same efficient service we do with our glassware, but it will take time to build up the stocks with the longer production lead times and shipping. We also have a really great team of independent sales agents, with some of them having been with Milford for more than 20 years.

Intellectual Property is a term that’s not only being increasingly mentioned but is recognised as a company’s most critical asset. Why? Because it underpins most successful creative organisations, whether it’s the brand, reputation, designs or patented technology. IP has value and must be protected. UK law protects the creations of the mind and for product designs in a 3D format by registered or unregistered designs.

Inventor Trevor Baylis is known for the wind-up radio and torch and protected it with a patent. Yet when interviewed by The Times recently, he admitted that other people made more money out of his invention. Why? Because he couldn’t afford to challenge them in the courts. Even the earliest forms of IP insurance could have given him the wherewithal to assert his IP rights.

Seeing a visually strong IP logo of deterrence such as ACID IP Insured will become part of a preventative strategy and dissuade potential infringers. If infringers are challenged, IP insurance will give financial as well as moral backing to the IP rights. An additional and significant advantage to having IP insurance is the comfort it can give in easier access to funding or refinancing a business.

The UK Government supports IP Insurance as a valuable self-help tool for the creative industries. Design infringement can be very costly to pursue and eat away at positive energy needed for business building strategies to grow and expand. Lone, micro and SMEs need help and this insurance offer has been specially designed, after consultations, to meet the needs of the design sector.

Cobra Legal & IP is a specialist broker accessing London Market insurers as well

as Lloyds’ syndicates. Since its formation, it’s concentrated on creating policies that assist SMEs. SMEs are the most creative but often worst served companies in the country. Many of their existing clients are individuals or micro-enterprises. Financial pressures on SMEs demand an IP insurance package to match their needs to assist with likely costs of enforcing their rights. Cobra has sought the most economical way of providing such

insurance solutions.ACID and COBRA have worked together

to provide an IP enforcement policy, adapted to meet the needs of ACID’s UK members at an advantageous and specially negotiated price. This will offer cover up to £100,000 for cases taken through the Intellectual Property Enterprise court, formerly the Patents County Court. The ACID scheme was launched in October 2014.

The Twins Gift Company was launched in September 2011 after a trip to St Thomas’s Hospital in London, visiting The Department of Twin Research as volunteers.

“I presented Lindsey with a Two Pearls in a Pod necklace by way of celebration of being a twin. Lindsey loved the gift and it was from this moment the idea for The Twins Gift Company was born,” explains Karen.

The sisters had worked together in the late ’80s when they had a fast food restaurant, and then went on to raise their families and came back to the workplace with the launch

of their giftware company. “When we had our restaurant, we realised very quickly that we had different skill sets and immediately found our own roles without ever having to sit down and decide what they were. We naturally fell into managing different sides of the business – and exactly the same has happened with The Twins Gift Company,” continues Karen.

The company offers a range of more than 250 product lines. Most of the items have been designed by the sisters while some are made here in the UK, which makes the gifts one-of-a-kind to the marketplace – products by twins, designed for twins, multiples and their families. They also sell bags on behalf of The Department of Twin Research to help support and raise money for the cause.

The brand’s products are designed for the multiples market alone – plaques, cards and canvasses are designed purely for twins, triplets and their families. There are gifts for mothers and father’s of twins, the grandparents, twin sisters and brothers, boy/girl twins, triplets and their siblings, and all big events are catered for such as christenings, birthdays, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and the celebration of newborns.

“Inspiration comes from everyday occurrences – hearing a saying, articles about twins/triplets, talking to our followers via social media about their experiences as parents of multiples – and we then transfer this knowledge into anecdotes that can be used on cards, plaques, canvasses and mugs. Being a multiple is like being part of a club, and the social sharing that we experience through social media enables us to gain knowledge and inspiration from our own potential customers. Our Facebook page is very active and we share knowledge, articles and experiences that are connected to the world of multiples,” explains Karen.

The duo’s best-selling design is the Peas in a Pod jewellery range. Designed and made in the UK, the beautiful collection includes a necklace, earrings, bracelet and pendant.

At the moment the company sells direct from its website, but is looking to extend a collection to high street retailers. “We feel that having run our business for three years, we now have the market knowledge to go to the high street with a range of gifts and cards to sell,” says Karen.

The company hosted The National Twin Day UK at Wicksteed Park, Kettering in September, and its next plan is to wholesale a collection and offer a personalisation service.
