She knew there was no “emergency need” for her to work on Saturdays, but her supervisor pressed the issue and Kathy was fired for her commitment to keeping God’s Sabbath day holy.

Meet Kathy Markham

Little Kathy didn’t grow up in a typical Christian home, but when her neighbors asked if she would like to attend their Presbyterian church with them she agreed. She enjoyed learning about God, and while no one taught her to pray, she began talking to God about her life. “There must be a God,” she thought. “How would the ants know how to care for themselves, or where did the stars, planets, and sun come from?” God had to be the explanation. Kathy’s older brother found himself headed to Vietnam, and he was worried about it – so was their mother. She bought all the children Bibles, and Kathy’s brother started to read his. Kathy later learned that her mother made a deal with God regarding her son: if God would protect him and bring him back safely from Vietnam, she would return to Him, and her SDA upbringing. Some things that are happening at WJA:

• Students at WJA finished their second round of MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing the last week of January.

• Alger Delta Cooperative donated $400 to the school.

• The NAD gave the school $4000 to help with expenses related to Covid. The board voted to purchase chrome books for students with those funds.

• Ms. Moravetz’s class has been working on this year’s annual.

• Grades 6-10 are learning skills and playing baseketball for PE, while Mrs. Berger’s class is playing hockey.

• Students have done a good job adjusting to mask wearing, and families who have had to quarantine have been very gracious and compliant.

Please continue to pray for students and the school.

Our 9-10 grade students will be participating in the Feed America handout at the Fairgrounds in Escanaba on February 18. According to the Food Pantry group, Feed America would also like to dispense food in Menominee County. They will be making a proposal at the Gourley Township meeting February 8 for a delivery date in March 18 utilizing the Gourley Township hall. This is a great opportunity to help reach out to the community. Please pencil this date in your calendar. The Food Pantry is also in need of winter coats, hats, gloves, and blankets. “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matt. 25:40

From the January church board meeting: Allan Priser outlined the Easter Pageant committee’s vision for this event, which he described during the adult Sabbath School on January 30. The planned dates are April 2-4 The building committee reported on the progress made on their projects, namely the items still to be finished at the teacher’s house, and steps to be taken toward the gym expansion. The committee asks that the board organize a fund-raising effort to assure that once started there will means to finish. The board approved alterations to the church’s sign in order that it may be used to alert the community of events on the calendar. That addition to the sign is now in place. Also in place is glass covering on each of the low tables in the foyer which were noted to already have scratches. There was some discussion of how to manage the time between SS and the worship service so that there is a minimum of noisy confusion in the hall and foyer. As a start, the adult classes will resolve to close promptly so that parents may manage their children when those divisions dismiss. There is continuing uncertainty about how to deal with the key situation. Some attention was given to the times the exterior lights on the North and East sides of the church need to be on and how to manage that.

Some fire watchers, some skaters at the Nelsons

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What’s that in the fire, and not in the flame?
What’s that in the master, and not in the dame? What’s that in the courtier, and not in the clown? What’s that in the country, and not in the town?
What am I
Disappointment I woke up And rolled out of bed. Pulled my jacket over my shoulders, And put my helmet on my head. I put my gloves on my hands, And my boots on my feet. Put my goggles on my face, And left the fireplace’s heat. I picked up my board, And headed straight to the lift. I looked around, And saw the night’s snowy white gift. We had gotten ten inches of powder, And I was ready to shred. Then I woke up and realized, I was still in my bed. I hopped out of bed, And went to the window to see. Had we actually had snow, Or was it all a dream? As I got to the window, I thought how can this be? It was the middle of July, And it was ninety degrees. It had felt so real, The snow in my dream. It was all gone though, And I wanted to scream. I had carved in the powder, And felt so free. I had shredded so hard, Avoiding all the trees. It was all gone though, Just a thought in my head. Now the only way I could see it, Was to go back to bed. ----By Nathan Pierce
