Science Camp Adventures.........Science Camp (Was Awesome!).........

By Maxwell Chen

" Science Camp at Camp Campbell was amazing! On the first day, I went on a hike, did a field study, and unpacked my luggage. Also, I discovered that the food was pretty good, like egg rolls, hot dogs, turkey, etc. At the end of the first day, we had a Fiesta, and had a dance party, with music like “Thriller”. A few hours after that, we heard a sand people story, and then went to bed." Throughout the week, we did long hikes, enjoyed lunch, breakfast, and dinner, heard stories, talked with friends, and participated in fun activities. You get boots if you are quiet at night." On the last day, you have to pack all your things, and say goodbye to friends from other schools, and the staff at camp campbell. After brunch on the last day(breakfast+lunch=brunch), we got to pick special activities we wanted to do. Activities, like EXTREME gaga-ball, capture the flag, the mole hole, arts and crafts, zip-line, obstacle course, watching a snake eat a mouse, and, finally, archery.I heard that the mouse!s guts get squeezed out of it!s buttocks, and it!s eyeballs pop out of it!s head. After about an hour of activities, you leave for home. Overall, camp is a really fun place, and all 4th graders should look forward to camp."

" P.S. Some of the girls get treetop cabins, with built in bathrooms and showers. For them, the cabin is very clean." P.S.S. For the boys, when in the bathroom, flush the toilet. If nobody properly does, the toilet!s water turns brown and mushy. THAT was the worst part about camp." P.S.S.S. I DID flush the toilet. I did not forget. A lot of other people did.

Science CampExclusive Interview with live fifth grader!

" Hello and welcome to Exclusive Interviews Monthly! Our interview topic today is... SCIENCE CAMP! Now, Lights, Camera, ACTION!

" “Our 120 fifth graders have just come back from Science Camp! We are going to interview one of the fellow students who have arrived! So, Fellow Fifth Grade Student, may we call you our FFGS? Alright then, FFGS, how was it back in Science Camp?”

" “ It was AWESOME! The teachers there were WONDERFUL and the days were FULL OF ACTION!”" “ Now, what did you do in Science Camp?”" “ Oh, a lot of things. On Tuesday, we got there, unpacked, did field study, and got to know each other. The way we got to know each other was that we played this game where it!s like monkey in the middle, HOWEVER, there are a bunch of people in a circle and the monkey!s job is to tap people before they say their name, and then #knows! , and then someone else!s name that is in the circle. On Wednesday, we woke up at 7:00 am, got dressed, brushed our teeth, and went to breakfast. We went on hikes, field study, lunch, and many other things such as a night hike and dinner. On Thursday we had a Fiesta! On Friday, we had to go back home.”

" “ How was the food there?”

" “It was alright, but the DESSERTS! Oh, they were DELICIOUS! Smores, Cookies, hey... HOLD ON A SECOND! I”M NOT GIVING ANYTHING ELSE AWAY!”

" “ Well.. due to non-cooperation, we must end here. And thank you for tuning in to...

" As you all might know, all of the fifth

graders went to Science Camp and if you are

the fourth graders then you will go to Science

Camp next year. You get to choose one of your

camp mates to be in your group. Then you will

go on the bus and get ready for your Science

Camp adventure! After, you will get to know

your cabin leaders and meet more new friends!

You will go on night hikes, fiesta, and also a

picnic hike which is about four hours including

your lunch. Everyone will get to sing songs and

learn different things. On the last night of

Science Camp, you will have a campfire and do

a skit. Then on the last day, you’ll have to go on

the bus and say good-bye to your teachers.

Even though you always have to say good-bye

you’ll always remember them in memory!

SCIENCE CAMPBY SHEFALI BHAGATH

Last week, all of the fifth graders from Williams Elementary went to Camp Campbell. We all had a blast!! Everyone was so excited when we were entering the driveway and as soon as we got off the bus I was happy to finally be at science camp! We all went to the flagpole area and gathered in a circle along with the other school. then we go assigned into lines to go into the Dining Hall. In the Dining Hall, we learned some songs like, The Banana Slug, Tan Oak, and Cuisano. We were then assigned to our field teachers, then our cabin leaders. My field teachers were D Rock and Breeze, and my cabin leader was Honeysuckle. On Tuesday night, my field group went on the night hike. At first I was scared because we were told that we weren!t allowed to use flashlights, but the moon shined pretty brightly and I had fun!! On Wednesday night, I went to the Fiesta. At the fiesta, you play a few games and then dance around with your friends!! On Thursday, I went on the picnic hike. The picnic hikeis an all day hike for four hours. It is really fun to go on and you can kiss banana slugs!! On Friday, sadly, we had to leave. We packed up then went to brunch(breakfast and lunch together), sang the final leaving song and then left.Advice: All of you that aren!t in fifth grade yet, you will LOVE Science Camp !!!

A Very Merry

Christmas

" “#Twas the night before Christmas an...”

“Yeah, okay, okay we got it Mason!” groaned 12 year old Savannah Dean, collapsed on the couch. She was tired of her 8 year old brother singing Christmas songs, non-stop to practice for his 3rd grade class caroling. Mason didn!t really want to do caroling with his class, but when he found out it annoyed his sister, he couldn!t refuse.

" Even though the caroling got on Savannah!s nerves, her parents loved it! Each of the many times Mason would sing, Mr. and Mrs. Dean would automatically clap. “Hurray!” “Brava!” “Let!s hear another!” And Savannah would only groan.

" It was finally the day of the caroling, on the day of Christmas eve. After a lot of singing, groaning, and clapping, the family was ready to go. They piled up in the car and Savannah slouched down in her seat wondering if she could hatch a plan and

leave in the middle of the show. Mason was sitting up right in his seat humming each song and each time a song was over he would start to snicker since his sister would “hmph!” after each of the songs.

" The Deans piled off of the car, relived to feel fresh air, and saw a crowd of spectators gathering around the auditorium of the school. “They all came to see me!” announced Mason, happy to find something to brag about to his sister.

" “Be quiet Mason, they!re here to see the class not just you.” exclaimed Savannah, in a bossy way. She was exasperated and she couldn!t wait for it t be over.

" They pushed through the crowd and into the auditorium and sat in empty seats in the fifth row. Mason put on his biggest smile and walked up the aisle on to the stage. The curtains closed and Savannah heard some bustling and whispering behind the curtains. Then she heard someone open the curtains and a lady with a microphone stepped up and began to talk, “Here is Mrs. Gail!s third grade class with some Christmas songs.”

" Kids from Mason!s class began to sing and of

course Mason singing the loudest of all. Savannah actually began to enjoy it and began to hum the tune. At the end of the show, the audience began clapping wildly, whistling, and saying “Bravo!”

" The lady stepped up again and flashed a smile toward the audience, “What a show...” she began, but Mason interrupted her.

" He grabbed the mic and spoke “I know I stole the show, I!ll sign autographs later, and I thank my sister for begging me to join the show!” He looked up at the lady and she scowled slightly. He didn!t mind and smiled warmly at Savannah. She blushed and covered her face.

" Mason made his way down the steps of the stage and handed a present to Savannah. “Have a very merry Christmas!”

Christmas in Different Countriesby

Bhargavi Garimella 12/6/10! Do you celebrate Christmas by putting up a Christmas tree? Or leaving milk and cookies for Santa? Well, people all over the world celebrate Christmas in different ways. Some people don’t celebrate Christmas at all! I will tell you about Christmas celebrations in foreign countries and how they are different from our celebrations. If some of you celebrate Christmas this way, great job for keeping your heritage and traditions!!!

Christmas in Venezuela! Venezuelans attend a daily early morning church service between December 16th and 24th called Misa de Aguinaldo ("Early Morning Mass.") In Caracas, the capital city, it is customary to roller-skate to this service and many neighborhoods close the streets to cars until 8 a.m. Before bedtime children tie one end of a piece of string to their big toe and hang the other out the window. The next morning, rollerskaters give a tug to any string they see hanging. After Mass everyone enjoys tostados and coffee.

Christmas In Czechoslovakia

Centuries ago, the western half of Czechoslovakia was known as Bohemia. This was the 10th century home of Good King Wenceslaus, the main character in the familiar English Christmas carol. It is said that English troops, fighting in Bohemia hundreds of years later, brought the song home with them.

In Czechoslovakia, St. Nicholas is called Svaty Mikalas and is believed to climb to earth down from heaven on a golden rope along with his companions: an angel and a whip-carrying devil.

An ancient tradition shared by Czechoslovakia and Poland involves cutting a branch from a cherry tree putting it in water indoors to bloom. If the bloom opens in time for Christmas it is considered good luck, and also a sign that the winter may be short. The hope of early spring helps keep spirits up during the long dark winter.

Christmas In Nicaragua Like many Latin American countries, Nicaragua retains many of the customs of old Spain. In the weeks leading up to Christmas people stroll the streets where there are many things to buy: candles, Nativity pictures, toys and foods. Children carry fragrant bouquets to the alter of the Virgin and sing carols. On Christmas Eve, church bells beckon the people to Midnight Mass. On January 6, the feast of the Epiphany, it is the three wise men who brings gifts for the children. Often the Holiday season concludes with a brilliant display of fireworks.

Christmas in Bethlehem

The little town where Jesus is said to have been born is the site of the Church of the Nativity, which is ablaze with flags and decorations every Christmas. On Christmas Eve natives and visitors alike crowd the church's doorways and stand on the roof to watch for the dramatic annual procession. Galloping horsemen and police mounted on Arabian horses lead the parade. They are followed by solitary horseman carrying a cross and sitting astride a coal-black steed. Then come the churchmen and government officials. The procession solemnly enters the doors and places an ancient effigy of the Holy Child in the church. Deep winding stairs lead to a grotto where visitors find a silver star marking the site of the birth of Jesus.

Christian homes in Bethlehem are marked by a cross painted over the door and each home displays a homemade manger scene. Then, a star is set up on a pole in the village square.

Christmas In FranceNearly every French home at Christmastime displays a Nativity scene or creche, which serves as the focus for the Christmas celebration. The creche is often peopled with little clay figures called santons or "little saints." An extensive tradition has evolved around these little figures which are made by craftsmen in the south of France throughout the year. In addition to the

usual Holy Family, shepherds, and Magi, the craftsmen also produce figures in the form of local dignitaries and characters. The craftsmanship involved in creating the gaily colored santons is

quite astounding and the molds have been passed from generation to generation since the seventeenth century. Throughout December the figures are sold at annual Christmas fairs in

Marseille and Aix.The Christmas tree has never been particularly popular in France, and though the use of the Yule log has faded, the French make a traditional Yule log-shaped cake called the buche de Nol, which means "Christmas Log." The cake, among other food in great abundance is served at the grand feast of the season, which is called le rveillon. Le rveillon is a very late supper held after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. The menu for the meal varies according to regional culinary tradition. In Alsace, goose is the main course, in Burgundy it is turkey with chestnuts, and the Parisians feast upon oysters and pat de foie gras.

French children receive gifts from Pere Noel who travels with his stern disciplinarian companion Pre Fouettard. Pre Fouettard reminds Pere Noel of just how each child has behaved during the past year. In some parts of France Pere Noel brings small gifts on St. Nicholas Eve (December 6) and visits again on Christmas. In other places it is le petit Jsus who brings the gifts. Generally adults wait until New Year's Day to exchange gifts.

" One frosty night before Christmas while the elves were hard at work Santa came in and said,“I!m sorry but I don!t think I can fly this Christmas.” Nearby, another elf was working on putting lights on a Christmas tree overheard,“Really???” thought the elf, obviously surprised, “Finally my time has come to overthrow Santa and control the world!!!” Suddenly, the dear, sweet Mrs Claus entered the workshop and immediately questioned Santa about his health. “Dear, what in the world happened to you!!!” “Well, I guess I!m sick. I took my temperature and it was VERY high.” Then Santa realized his elves were not working, “Keep on working, Christmas is almost here!” “Yes sir!” replied a busy elf, hard at work making a toy car. Mrs. Claus finally realized that Santa!s sickness would keep him from flying this Christmas, “ Dear, you won!t be able to fly!” “I guess I might have to cancel Christmas this year. I regret it, but I don!t see a way around it.” “I can take over sir!” replied the elf that was conspiring against Santa. “OK” said Santa, but the other elf making the toy car said, “ But I thought you said I was your best elf!” “Good point. In that a case, you will lead instead.” Sadly for him, the evil elf!s chance to overthrow Santa had slipped out of his fingers.

1 day after Christmas..." “I feel so much better after I delivered all those presents to those kids even though I was feeling so sick!!! The fresh air really helped me!” said Santa brightly. But, there were mixed feelings around the workshop. The evil elf felt sad and mad, but Mrs. Claus felt good to have Santa back. “You did an awesome job Doodly, by taking over, but I delivered the presents anyway!” All in all, it was a memorable Christmas for everyone.

Weird Facts About ChristmasBy Shefali Bhagath

1. In the Ukraine, if you find a spider web in the house on Christmas morning, it is believed to be a sign of good luck! There once lived a woman so poor, says a Ukrainian folk tale, that she could not afford Christmas decorations for her family. One Christmas morning, she awoke to find that spiders had trimmed her children’s tree with their webs. When the morning sun shone on them, the webs turned to silver and gold. An artificial spider and web are often included in the decorations on Ukrainian Christmas trees.

2. At Christmas, it is traditional to exchange kisses beneath the mistletoe tree. In ancient Scandinavia, mistletoe was associated with peace and friendship. That may account for the custom of "kissing beneath the mistletoe". 3. The poinsettia is a traditional Christmas flower. In Mexico (its original birthplace), the poinsettia is known as the "Flower of the Holy Night".

4. The "Urn of Fate" is part of the Christmas celebrations in many Italian households. The Urn of Fate is brought out on Christmas Eve. It holds a wrapped present for everyone. The mother tries her luck first, then the others in turn. If you get a present with your name on it, you keep it; otherwise, you put it back and try again.

Dear Willie the Whale,

Sadly, in my school here in Brownsville people bully and are bullied. They make fun of kids and when

people try to help the bullies bully them too!! I’m really tired of this and not happy because it is not

a good influence to other kids. I heard that at your school people are friendly and respectful and I

hope your advice could help make my school a better place.

Thanks for your help,

Being Bullied in Brownsville

Dear Being Bullied,

I have lots of advice for you and the first thing I need to tell you is to TELL OTHER ADULTS!!! This can help you to overpower

the bullies. Secondly, you should ignore their insults and it will automatically stop after the bullies realize that it does not

bother you. STAY AWAY!!! Avoid bullies as much as you can and also walk with self-confidence and be strong and look ‘em in

the eye. Next, laugh at his threats and walk away from him. This makes it sound less hurtful. Another tip is to confront the

bully calmly and tell him that it is wrong and people have real names instead of ‘four eyes’ etc. The bully wants to hurt your

feelings, so act like his name-calling and taunts don't hurt. You can do this by admitting the bully is right. For example, when

the bully calls you "fatty," look him in the eye and say calmly, "You know, I am overweight. I need to start getting more

exercise." Then walk off with confidence.

Your friend.

Willie the Whale

P.S. Thank you for saying that the students at Williams Elementary are friendly and respectful. They are.
